Particulate samples were taken from the gas space in the settler of the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter using a vertical sampling probe and a specially designed isokinetic sampling probe which also quenched the samples. The vertical sampler was found to give unrepresentative samples. Suction thermocouple measurements of the gas temperature were also made. Using the isokinetic probe samples were taken at four points ranging from near the base of the reaction shaft to the base of the uptake at depths up to 1.5 m into the settler. Dust loadings and the sizing of the samples were determined. These parameters were found to be most affected by sample position and depth. The dust loading decreased along the settler but increased with depth. The loadings varied from zero near the roof to several hundred g Nm 3 near the slag. The dust also became coarser with increasing depth into the settler. Examination of the samples showed them to consist of spherical particles the largest of which were about 500 microns in diameter. The dust was mainly composed of mixed iron/nickel oxides with a little sulphide.

The mine site is situated south east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A detailed engineering design was undertaken for six irregularly shaped waste rock dumps at the site. The design was undertaken to ensure long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements for closure construction. The Watershed Erosion Prediction Program (WEPP) and SIBERIA landscape evolution modelling was undertaken for the landforms using regional and site-specific material characteristics to provide an indication of the maximum allowable slopes and corresponding slope lengths for long-term stability.The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps are considered likely to be subgrade banded iron formation (BIF) and chert, which is generally competent material. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. Geological records also indicate that the dolerite is logged as being heavily kaolinised in the geological logging, hence kaolinite is very likely to be present within the waste dumps on-site. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert).The final design configuration of the largest existing ‘unplanned’ waste rock stockpile is compared to a hypothetical continuous ten degree outer embankment alternative. Mechanical sampling from conveyors has historically been a staple in the iron ore industry when information related to chemistry, sizing and moisture is required. In order to comply with ISO 3082:2009, samples can be taken either on a mass or time basis provided no bias is introduced by periodical variation in quality or quantity. With the introduction of mechanical sample carousels, you also have the opportunity to collect samples on a mass or time basis. In order to optimise automatic sample stations in a changing production environment, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPBIO) has developed a simulation model that enables the various combinations of mass–mass, mass–time, time–time and time–mass to be investigated.The sample station model can utilise actual (variable) feed rates to achieve high resolution and enables the simulation of sample size variation. Cutter speeds and other settings can then be adjusted to better optimise the performance of the sample station with regards to optimal sample size as well as ensuring the sample station is in compliance with ISO 3082. The model can also assist process engineers in adjusting settings to better optimise the sample station and reduce unwanted events such as blockages. The model can be easily modified to conform to various sample station designs. This monograph presents a unified theory of adsorption and desorption of aurocyanide on activated carbon. This theory has proved useful for CIP/CIL carbon adsorption and Zadra and AARL elution process and equipment design; in accounting for the effects of various water qualities and process temperatures; and in the development of reagents to improve these processes. The theory presented is based on rigorous fundamentals : Classical Eyring theory links initial first order kinetics with Langmuir isotherm equilibria, and this isotherm is demonstrated for the first time to be a consequence of the activated complex postulate of Eyring theory. Simple extension to Freundlich conditions at high solution tenors is possible, but not presented. Supporting entropy data determined by the author includes practically all the pioneering CIP plants built in South Africa and Australia in the early 1980s.

The 3.5 million tones per annum Enterprise mine is the newest underground copper mine at Mount Isa in northern Australia. At a depth of up to 2000 metres, it is the hottest and deepest mine in Australia. In situ rock temperatures sometimes exceed 60¦C requiring the installation of substantial amount of refrigeration to provide safe working conditions for mine workers. The latest refrigeration project at the mine, R67, required the design and installation of the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler and AustraliaÆs largest chilled water plant. The plant is mounted on the surface of the mine and provides 25 MW of refrigeration to cool some 580 kg/sec of ambient air to 11.4¦C. This is equivalent to the production of 6300 tonnes of ice per day. The plant was designed for high availability, as any downtime would result in substantial production losses to MIM, and also had the potential to quickly result in unsafe levels of heat stress within the underground workplaces. The bulk air cooler has been designed for a capacity of 34 MW(R), the expected ultimate carrying capacity of the 7 m vertical intake shaft. Being located well inside the tropics, technical issues such as control of thermal pulldown required special consideration. Also, the bulk air cooler had to be designed to handle whatever demand for fresh air was imposed by the mine below, with over 100 per cent variations in airflow expected, and without loss of thermal efficiency. A substantial program of risk assessment and HAZOP studies was used to protect underground miners from leaks of ammonia into the air or water circuits. Fully automatic control systems result in a totally unmanned plant that is supervised remotely. To improve efficiency, the plant is controlled by the outlet air temperature from the bulk air cooler û the first in the world to be controlled in this fashion. Engineering solutions to address environmental considerations were incorporated at the design stage through features such as the use of ammonia (a greenhouse-friendly gas) as the refrigerant, zero atmospheric discharge and a wastewater collection and re-use system.

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. It has been worked since 1884-first for, silver, then for silver and lead, and at present for lead, silver, and zinc. No excuse seems necessary for placing before members even an imperfect report on the geological features of this notable ore deposit, since so little work has been done on the subject as to constitute almost a national reproach. This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.

The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

In order to understand the technique, basic theoretical principles of radiation emission and in- strumentation theory are reviewed. Methods of surveying, reduction of data and interpretation are outlined. Other applications of the technique (e.g. in airborne geological mapping), as well as its specific use in uranium exploration, are discussed. By means of case history-type examples the successful applicant of gamma-ray spectrometry, as a tool in Australian mineral search, is demonstrated.

Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.

There is an increasing demand for refrigeration as mines progress deeper. Mine refrigeration plants have special requirements in terms of their duty and application. There are no national or international standards applicable for the testing of these plants. There have been numerous examples of plants failing to meet their required nominal capacity, but with the plant owner being unable to enforce the design duty on the manufacturer, due to a failure to unambiguously specify testing or accepting criteria. This paper discusses some of the reasons for performance shortcomings and describes a methodology for developing and specifying performance criteria, when inviting design and/or construction tenders, and a method of performance and acceptance testing once the plant has been built and commissioned. These guidelines encompass the full range of performance duties expected from a mine plant, including stable operation at maximum and minimum plant capacity, and under the various combinations of extremes of high and low condensing and evaporating pressures. A description of a methodology for developing a computer-based mine refrigeration plant model is also presented as part of the performance testing criteria. The methodology is illustrated with reference to the actual performance and acceptance testing process used on the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler (R67) at the Enterprise mine at Mount Isa, Australia.

To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

Following acquisition of the Woodlark Island tenement by Highlands Gold Limited, an exploration programme using extensive diamond drilling has confirmed that the style of gold mineralisation is similar to other SW Pacific Rim carbonate base metal gold systems. The two centres of gold mineralisation at Kulumadau and Boniavat-Busai are inferred to be related. to buried porphyry centres localised on NE trending major horst bounding structures. Individual prospects are localised on NW trending cross structures peripheral to the porphyry centres.Gold mineralisation has been derived from the mixing of hot saline magmatic fluids with cool dilute meteoric waters. While the bulk of mineralisation occurs in dilational tensional gash fractures, bonanza grades resulted from fluid quenching in feeder structures. Pre-mineralisation breccias created plumbing systems for hydrothermal fluids and similar paragenetic sequences are defined for Busai and the Kulumadau areas. These include early, distal porphyry, low sulphidation mineralisation, followed by base metal gold and carbonate deposition.

Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values. This paper includes a discussion of fundamental mechanisms of cyanidation, preg- and assay-robbing, which underlie the phenomena Involved.

Metallurgical process control systems in mineral plants often employ state-of-the-art monitoring analysers in an attempt to optimise plant operations and enhance mineral recoveries. These systems are unfortunately invariably fed by simplistic ‘sampling’ designs consisting of various in-stream methods or pressurised probes. These are unfortunate compromises and provide a false picture of what a mineral flotation or other process can achieve. The situation is further aggravated by some manufacturers using misleading marketing to suggest discrete cross-stream methods for metallurgical accounting and unreliable continuous in-stream off-takes for control sampling and that they are of synonymous integrity.Reliable, absolute or representative samples are often absent in many modern day concentrator plants, due to compromises around sample taking, particularly in terms of delineation and extraction errors and thus leading to sample bias. For more reliable information from online analysers we need a continuous, but much more reliable sample taken, than is current practice.Online analysers require a fully proportional and continuous supply of sample for effective process control, otherwise maximised or benchmark recoveries will be nothing but a pipe dream. Large discrete cross-stream samples from mechanically less reliable equipment cannot be used as feed to online analysers, as it will negatively impact real-time feedback and efficient process control.It is possible to build correct sampling systems that could do both process controls online and metallurgical accounting at the same time. Multotec Process Equipment (Pty) Limited, in close association with experienced sampling consultant Francis Pitard, have jointly patented a concept to achieve this and which is embodied in the design of the unique Rotating Cone® Sampler (International Patent Application No. PCT/IB2016/057464). Early theories of coal formation are outlined, with special emphasis on the arguments for allochthony and autochthony. Various aspects of the nature, growth, and decay of the characteristic vegetation of the brown coal peat moors, their conversion into coal, the origin of banding, and the influence of tectonics are discussed.A description of the banding in Victorian brown coals is followed by a discussion of their vitrain, fusain, and natural carbonized coal; and concludes with the nature of the coal resin and the possibilities of its extraction.The nature and derivation of inorganic matter in brown coal, based on Lessing's classification, is described. Assimilation of mineral substances in specific plants with variations due to environmental factorsare illustrated by analyses of present day trees. Consideration is then given to possible sources of salt, marcasite, and quartz in brown coal.It is shown that part of the inherent and extraneous ash may have been removed during and after coal formation. The nature and abundance of the organically combined substances in brown coal emphasizes the anomalies that may arise from estimating the total inorganic matter from ash contents.After classifying deposits on external heating surfaces of boilers, theoretical and practical aspects of slag formation, alkali matrix deposits, and the effect of sulphur and chlorine are considered.Analyses of deposits in boilers burning Victorian brown coal are tabulated.Slagging at the Yallourn power station from sand in the Yallourn open cut, and difficulties with Yallourn North Extension coal at the Maryvale paper mills are described.Tests carried out on Morwell and Yallourn coals showed that with the former, impacted deposits formed on boiler heating surfaces, and left a high percentage of chlorides on probes. On behalf of resident members, I have to offer the visitors a very cordial welcome to Mount Morgan, and to tell them that all arrangements have been made to enable them to inspect the mine and works at their own convenience, and to supply them with any particulars they may need.It is very pleasing indeed to see such a large gathering, especially on account of the long journeys many have undertaken in order to be present. The first congress in Queensland, about eleven years ago, was attended by a comparatively small number of members, and a rather long time has been allowed to pass in consequence. The large attendance at this meeting encourages the holding of meetings in Queensland more frequently. Owing to the long distances, and the number of mining centres in Australia and New Zealand, we cannot expect to meet oftener than once in six or seven years in...

Iluka Resources Ltd developed the Jacinth-Ambrosia Mine (Jacinth) in the Eucla Basin during 2009 and 2010. In this arid climate the operation relies on hyper-saline groundwater from a palaeochannel for process and potable water supplies. The water is hyper-saline, acidic and mildly reducing, with high ferrous iron concentrations. Ferrolysis commences on exposure of water to oxygen, resulting in increased acidity and the conversion of dissolved ferrous iron to insoluble ferrihydrite. The unstable groundwater forces a careful balance between interventions relating to maintaining pipeline efficiency, corrosion protection and processing aspects. Providing an oxidising environment at the head of the pipeline will result in the precipitation of akaganenite and goethite in the pipeline, which over time reduces pipeline efficiency. However, sending too much ferrous iron forward may reduce processing performance.The processing plant experiences changes in water chemistry in response to the variability of iron concentrations and pH within the pipeline, and the spatial and chemical variability of ore. As the main orebody at Jacinth contains little buffering capacity a source of carbonate in the overburden is carefully used to allow the cost-effective control of process water pH.This paper highlights the importance of understanding the chemistry of saline make-up water, ore, and overburden when designing water treatment facilities and heavy mineral processing facilities.
