In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. Kinetic Study on the Leaching of Vanadium from LD Converter Slag Using Sulfuric Acid In order to reduce the environmental impact due to land disposal of LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag from steelmaking plant and to valorise this waste material, an acid leaching study was carried out to assess the effect of several parameters on the kinetics of vanadium dissolution. The characterisation and morphology of the feed investigated using XRD, XRF. The factors influencing leaching vanadium such as particle size, temperature, slurry density and the concentration of sulfuric acid were investigated and optimised. The maximum vanadium recovery about 95 per cent achieved at 70¦C, S/L: 1/15, acid concentration: 3M and for 150 minutes of leaching time. The dissolution of vanadium in sulfuric acid shows that there are two stages in the kinetics of leaching. At the first 15 minutes, there is a sharp increase in the amount of vanadium extracted and at longer leaching time, the extraction increase slightly. In the present work, the shrinking core model (SCM) was used to describe the acid leaching of vanadium compounds. A summary of the controlling regimes in the SCM are examined below for short time (less than 12 min.) and long time (more than 30 min.) stages. So, it was found that the kinetics of leaching in both stages is controlled by solid product diffusion regime.

This Department handles all ores prior to blast-furnacing, the object of the operations being to mix the lead-bearing material with fiuxes, eliminate sulphur from the mixture, and produce a homogeneous sintered product which is chemically and physically suitable for treatment in the blast furnaces.During the financial year ended the 30th June, 1937, the tonnage of charge treated was 458,960 tons, containing some 183,470 tons of lead and 8,504,000 oz. of silver.The quantities of the principal components of the charge treated were as follow:-

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) uses low cost off-peak energy to compress air and pump it into pressurised underground storage. Expanding the air through a modified form of gas turbine generates electrical energy when required. While generating power, a CAES station consumes approximately one-third of the gas required for the equivalent installed capacity of a conventional gas turbine. Air can be stored in underground rock caverns, caverns in salt domes, or in aquifers. Existing CAES power stations use caverns mined out of salt domes. Aquifer storage for CAES has been proposed, but not yet implemented. The groundwater in the aquifer would be displaced during air injection and when required the air would be extracted using the natural hydro-static pressure. Victoria has no salt domes, but has aquifers onshore in the Gippsland Basin with geological dome structures of suitable depth, discovery pressure, porosity, permeability and caprock for CAES development. Field tests costing several million dollars would be required to prove the suitability. The most suitable aquifer is near Seaspray, where several dome structures exist. The aquifer, comprising of coarse sands capped by coal and mudstone, is some 600 metres deep with a hydrostatic pressure of 6.3 MPa. Computer simulation of injection and extraction of air from the aquifer under various combinations of horizontal and vertical wells, permeability and tubing head pressures indicated the largest aquifer structure had the capacity to sustain a 300 MW station. A well field comprising of 24 directionally driven wells with a horizontal exposure to the aquifer would achieve the air flow rates required. Using plant similar to that recently installed at McIntosh Alabama USA, would mean high capital costs compared to standard gas turbine plant. However, a review of modem gas turbines indicated that they could be easily and economically adaptated to CAES duty. Adapting a 120 MW gas turbine would give 344 MW output. A separate air compression plant would be used. Economic evaluations indicate that, for gas prices above $1.95 per GJ, a 344 MW CAES plant is more economic for intermediate/reserve load duty than simple cycle gas turbines.

Economic conditions after WorId War II made the recovery of Australian sources of sulphur one of considerable national importance. From 1947 to 1949 an investigation was made of recirculation techniques to produce acid plant grade gas from the Dwight-Lloyd down-draught sintering plant.During 1949 it appeared feasible to produce a gas of suitable 802 concentration and a decision was made to construct a gas purification train and a 150 tons/day contact acid plant. However, a number of difficulties remained in the production of the gases for sulphuric acid manufacture and as a result of research conducted to overcome these troubles the continuous up-draught sintering process was developed.The principal difficulties were:(a:) The down-draught sintering practice, as developed, produced an unusually high metallic lead precipitation in the windboxes. Geological mapping in various parts of Australia is revealing a number of regional associations of mineralizations with particular persistent stratigraphic horizons. Such associations have been found in the Broken Hill district of New South Wales, in the Nairne district of South Australia, in the Mount Isa district of Queensland, and in the Cloncurry district of Queensland. The question has arisen as to whether such mineralizations are of sedimentary origin, syngenetic with the enclosing formation, or whether they are of epigenetic origin, and reflect the selective hydrothermal mineralization of favourable beds on a regional scale.The purpose of this investigation is to test the use of sulphur-selenium ratios as an objective method of distinguishing between suphide deposits or sedimentary or supergene origin, and sulphide deposits of hydrothermal origin, with particular application to the districts mentioned. At the same time much data has been accumulated as to the selenium content of Australian sulphide ores. The possible use of sulphur-selenium ratios for this purpose was first demonstrated by Goldschmidt and his coworkers (1933; 1935), and later by Carstens (1941). Goldschmidt and Strock (1935) found that pyrite of sedimentary origin had a sulphur : selenium ratio of the order of 200,000 or more, whereas pyrite of hydrothermal origin had a sulphur: selenium ratio of 10,000 to 20,000. Carstensfound that sedimentary pyrite deposits in Norway contained less than 1 g. Se per ton, whereas hydrothermal pyrite deposits contained 20 to 30 g. per ton.

Apatite Fission Track Analysis (AFTA) is a thermal history reconstruction tool that enables determination of magnitude and timing of maximum paleotemperature and paleo-geothermal gradient at the time of maximum paleotemperatures. From this information, the amount of section missing at major unconfornities can be estimated and incorporated into basin models. The Gippsland Basin has a number of distinct problems that can be tackled using AFTA. 1. The nature of the regional break between the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary Latrobe Group and the underlying Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group. 2. The tectonic history of the basement flanking the basin and its effect on sediment composition. 3. The age of igneous activity in the basin, as typified by the widespread basaltic plugs and dykes intruding the outcropping Strzelecki Group. Major uplift and erosion within, and adjacent to, the early Cretaceous rift basin in the Mid-Cretaceous, at -95 to 100 Ma, initially constrained the Latrobe Group depositional area to the central deep of the Gippsland Basin and provided an elevated source of quartz-rich detritus for the Latrobe Group reservoirs. This is in marked contrast to the preceding period in the early Cretaceous when contemporaneous volcanism dominated as a source of detritus, producing quartz-poor lithic sandstones, in which a host of attendant diagenetic reactions destroyed their reservoir potential. Initial uplift and erosion of the volcanogenic Strzelecki Group also occurred in the mid-Cretaceous as revealed by a number of distinct inversion structures, and erosion of this material will have locally provided very poor quality sand to the basal Latrobe Group.

Since 2008, Arrium has been developing and commissioning a new low-grade hematite ore benefication plant (or OBP) at its Iron Baron mine site.The Iron Baron mine, which was closed in the 1990s, could not consistently yield the high-grade hematite required for pelletising. However, in todayÆs market, the 12 Mt of waste dumps represent a significant low-grade hematite resource, ideal for benefication.Initially, an internal scoping study and several sampling campaigns were conducted to determine the ability to upgrade the available low-grade dump material to a product suitable for export. Test work was conducted at Mineral Technologies (formerly CPG), and included high intensity magnetic separation, spiralling and jigging. Due to promising results from a wet processing circuit, Arrium engaged Mineral Technologies to design a flow sheet that could provide 1 Mt/a of a mixture of high-grade lump (-32 + 8 mm) and fines (-8 mm) products for export.With construction of the plant completed in late January 2012, Arrium, in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, began two commissioning phases. Each phase ended with a toll gate to prove the plantÆs capacity to reach rate and desired grade. After an initial period of running on water, feed solids were introduced to the plant and troubleshooting of bottlenecks began. The first toll gate, whereby the plant was required to run for 24 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h (80 per cent of design rate), was completed on the 1 March 2012. Further troubleshooting and resolving of issues allowed the plant to steadily increase feedrate while maintaining good availability and grade. The second toll gate required the plant to run for 72 hours at an average feed rate of 200 t/h while meeting grade, yield and water consumption targets. Sampling campaigns were conducted during this period to track the performance of key equipment. Completion of the test, and full handover of the plant to Arrium, was completed on the 21 April 2012.Although the formal commissioning phases had been completed, ongoing optimisation of the OBP continued, ensuring that all major equipment was working to produce the optimum yield and grade. Sampling campaigns were conducted on the jigs and spirals, with results and correlations used for operations documentation.Overall, with successful completion of the final acceptance tests, the commissioning of the Iron Baron OBP has been established as a major success achieving all production and quality targets as per the original design intent.This paper will focus on the successful commissioning and ramp-up performance of the plant however reference will also be made to the key development stages involved with the development of the project.CITATION:Stanton, C and Bannear, M, 2013. As we look back through the Proceedings of our Institute, we find few papers dealing directly with education and recruitment. Apart from papers prepared in the earlier decades of this century, there was little written discussion on the subject until the 1950s, and mostly this was by the professionals, the professors and lecturers who staff the various mining schools of Australia and New Zealand.I use the term "mining school" in its fullest and widest meaning, to cover all aspects from ore to metal, and not in the narrow meaning that the word might imply. At the same time, in restricting the parameters of this address to "ore to metal" I recognize that I am excluding the very important fields of physical metallurgy and materials science; this I do because there is a limit to the quantum of any paper, and in fact these subjects are more closely allied to the use rather than the production of metals.However, the lack of education papers does not mean that education has been regarded lightly by The Institute. Sir Maurice Mawby in his presidential address in 1968, reminded us of the original objectives of The Institute, one 'of which was, "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals ...". Our present Royal Charter is more specific when it says that one of the objects of The Institute is, ". . . to encourage the study of engineering with special reference to mining and metallurgy ...". If we recognize that in itself membership of our Institute is one means of continuing our education, it is true that education has been a concern of The Institute since it was first founded.Occasionally in recent years, an intrepid president has ventured to tell the academics what the industry needs, and he generally does this in a "no-question" situation! However it is encouraging that those entrusted with mineral education have always accepted this; they keep coming back for more and ask us to tell them what we want, and they will provide it.In 1948 a considerable dialogue on education was initiated when a standing committee was established by the Council of The Institute. Hot briquetting is a reliable, fully developed industrial concept for the passivation of direct reduced iron produced with the various processes of direct reduction. During hot briquetting, the large specific surface area of direct reduced iron is drastically reduced, and therefore the well-known problems caused by reoxidation and overheating are avoided. Even the shipping instructions published by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) confirm that Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) can be handled and shipped without special precautions. From the mid-1970s until today, after extensive pilot testing of the technology, a number of industrial plants for the hot briquetting of direct reduced iron have gone into operation. Additional hot briquetting plants for already established but also for new direct reduction processes are tinder construction or in different stages of planning. This paper describes the characteristics of HBI and its current industrial application for various Direct Reduction Processes.

The Mount Angelo prospect outcrops as two copper rich gossans, the larger of which is 250 ft long and 70 ftwide. The mineralization is epigenetic and replaces part of a brecciated and disturbed lime tone and calcareou sediment sequence.Magnetic and self potential survey indicated a substantial body of sulphide mineralization, the top of which was approximately 100 ft below the surface.Diamond drilling confirmed this and established the presence of a mineral body of at least 500,000 tons, extending to a depth of 300 ft. Of the 500,000 tons, 200,000 ton are primary copper ore which a ays 2 per cent copper.This mineral body is not economic at present, but could become economic if copper mining is established elsewhere in the district...

The estimation of the shear stress distribution around an excavation is important to the design of the excavation since shear stresses can generate cracks, loosen grain boundaries or otherwise degrade the mechanical and physical properties of the rock and lead to stability problems. In this study, the distribution of shear stresses in a pillar were back-calculated from the deformation measurements made from the SPDV (Site and Preliminary Design Validation) area at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site. A plausible pattern of shear stress around an excavation has been suggested based on the Zero Strain Boundary (ZSB) calculation, computer simulation using FLAC, and back-calculation using measured deformation rates in the pillars.

The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

The first part (lH of this work dealt with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformation by creep, as revealed by macroscopical examination. It was shown that when recrystallization commenced, a crystal, termed the primary crystal, started to grow at the edge of the specimen and extended into the body of the specimen along the slip planes. At some stage during the growth of this crystal, other crystals appeared at the boundary of this first crystal and fragments of the parent crystal. From thispoint, recrystallization was accelerated with relatively rapid necking down of the specimen until fracture occurred.All those crystals formed after the primary crystal were given the term secondary crystals. In the present paper is given a detailed account of the orientations of the primary and secondary crystals.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe size of the test pieces and the manner of loading were given in the previous paper (1). The paper deals with the metallographic tudy of heat treated chromite and chromite-coke composite briquettes. The briquettes, prepared from chromite concentrate of Orissa Mines using molasses-lime, dextrinelime and tamarind seed as binders, were subjected to different temperatures and examined metallographically. The change of phase with temperature was analysed by X-ray diffraction.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.
