The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

The expansion of hydrometallurgical operations, declining ore grades and upwardly spiralling production increases the demand for fresh and recycled water with low levels of contaminants. The minerals industry is also increasingly being forced both by regulatory and cost pressures to reduce the amount of liquid waste they produce. This requires a strong focus on waste reduction by recycling, regeneration and reuse. However, these measures are often not enough in arid countries for a forward progress and expansion of their mining activities.   It is often the case that in the arid and semi-arid countries the only available water is either sea water or underground (brackish to hypersaline) saline waters. Brackish waters can be desalted at a reasonable cost but the desalination of highly saline waters is challenging and expensive.   There are emerging reports that sea water and in some cases hypersaline underground waters are now used by various mining industries as process water. This study explores the possibility of the use of sea water in various mineral processing and hydrometallurgical processes and briefly discusses the benefits and problems related to the use of saline waters at the mine and mill site. Several cases studies and preliminary laboratory test results are presented.

Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm, Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations' call for sustainable development in a consistent manner. New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past. The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined. Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. Environmental issues are now global and the twentieth year Environment Conference planned for 1992 is likely to see new commitments made by world leaders and their national governments. Green politics may be the popular trend of the moment but green principles of managing the earth's resources are here to stay. There are many businessmen, many technologists, and many politicians who have hoped that the environmental movement was a passing fad and would fade into oblivion. The evidence is otherwise. Far from passing into oblivion, the environmental movement is growing rapidly. Each year brings further scientific data that indicates mankind is on a self destructive course unless we learn how to better manage the earth's natural resources. This information has contributed to a growing population of environmentally aware people. In the last 20 years there have been messages of concern about a population increase out of control and the energy crisis which focused on dwindling oil stocks. The issues are all interrelated including the present global issues of climate change and thinning ozone layers. The attention being given the messages by the United Nations and member states requires similar attention by industry. The problems have been identified; the challenge is to determine what should be done about them. Every challenge brings new opportunities and the future need not be doom and destruction. Mining is seen by some of the environmental action groups as unnecessarily destructive of the environment, but I do not see mining ceasing in the next few decades. Rather, the rules will be clearer with some areas excluded from mining, the methods of extraction will improve, the technology of processing will become more sophisticated and restoration of mining sites will be not only normal practice worldwide, but the end result may leave no hazards, may enhance the landscape and may result in acceptance of the industry by the general public. For that to happen, commitment and cooperation is required between the industry, the government, and society. As an Officer of Parliament my role is to review the system of agencies and processes established by Government for allocating, using and preserving natural resources and to report whether the system is maintaining and improving the quality of the environment. I also have a responsibility to see that the environmental planning and management carried out by public authorities is effective. That Ineans I have a keen interest in how the mining industry is administered by New Zealand public authorities, including Ministers of the Crown and district and regional councils. Today I intend to review the approach to resource management being taken by international agencies and by the New Zealand Government, and to comment on how environmental impact assessment for mineral exploration, as well as mining, may be administered in the future.

The underground Neves Corvo copper-tin mine in southern Portugal currently disposes of its tailings in a ætraditionalÆ wet tailings impoundment. With the development of new technologies for preparation and transport of thickened tailings or paste, alternative tailings disposal options have become available that provide a more sustainable water management system and a higher degree of environmental protection. In addition, growing European resistance towards subaqueous disposal may well result in mandatory use of dry disposal methods in the near future. Twenty-four tailings disposal alternatives were evaluated through a cost-effective and easily-implementable bench-scale geochemical screening program conducted at site. Since the tailings are pyrite-rich and highly acid generating, particular emphasis was placed on monitoring likely indicators of sulfide oxidation under the various simulated disposal scenarios. Dependent parameters investigated as part of the program included moisture content, use of alkaline additives (lime, cement), use of a bactericide, and agitation. Response parameters included paste pH, specific conductance, and temperature as indicators of oxidation. The testing was carried out for 30 weeks. Results indicate that a number of relationships between the geochemical stability of the samples (ie sulfide oxidation) and sample characteristics can be readily identified. Based on the results of the screening program, a limited number of tailings mixtures have been selected for further long-term testing in field weathering cells to aid in the identification of the optimal mix design for future tailings disposal at the Neves Corvo Mine. This type of testing provides an inexpensive and reliable methodology for semi-quantitative comparison between tailings disposal alternatives, in particular at locations where more rigorous evaluation through long-term, fully replicated testing is not immediately feasible.

The market has become highly competitive for engineering and equipment vendors, who are challenged to reduce costs while improving efficiency and productivity of mine operations through plant improvements and expansions. Although conveyor transfer systems account for a small percentage of the infrastructure cost of a mine, they form an integral part of the process supply chain. Malfunctions or suboptimal performance can result in substantial financial cost from delayed start-up, unscheduled downtime, reduced throughput and increased maintenance costs.Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a powerful simulation method used to virtually prototype and test the performance of transfer equipment throughout a design cycle. When developed and applied correctly, DEM can provide insight into performance that exceeds the traditional analytical methods, especially when dealing with complex ore properties, behaviour and/or situations.Using case studies sourced from the authors’ recent research and industrial project work, this paper will address the industry goal to increase efficiency and productivity as well as the methods available to the engineers responsible for delivering designs that meet the aims of this strategic approach.The main focus of the paper will be the new calibration technology, which has been developed by the authors to generate DEM material models that are linked to real-world properties and flow behaviours via unique dynamic testing and innovative parameter calibration methods. These calibrated DEM material models can be deployed by engineers into their existing workflows, whether it be for feasibility studies, concept or final design, plant troubleshooting or optimisation.This new technology allows engineers to gain greater insight than that provided by traditional approaches to the design of transfer chutes and other process equipment and also allows informed design decisions to be made that meet industry efficiency and productivity requirements.CITATION:Grima, A P, Curry, D and Wypych, P W, 2015. In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

CrusherMapperTM - A New Tool for Crusher Condition Monitoring The efficiency of mineral processing plants is entirely dependent on the availability of the plant equipment critical path. This typically concerns comminution circuits consisting of primary crushers and primary grinding mills. Crusher and mill availability are determined by the frequency and duration of maintenance shutdowns, which are primarily driven by the need for replacement of sacrificial liners. The change of crusher and mill liner shape over respective life cycles also strongly affects plant efficiency. It is therefore highly desirable to accurately monitor the condition of mills and crushers in order to optimise plant efficiency through maximised availability and targeted liner shape. Traditional comminution liner and other production parameter condition monitoring has been attempted through ineffective methods which prevent satisfactory management of crusher and mill maintenance and reduce operational control. This situation has recently dramatically improved for grinding mills through the development and commercial deployment of MillMapperÖ, a technology based on three-dimensional laser scanning data and dedicated software (Franke, Lichti and Stewart, 2006; Franke and Lichti, 2007; 2008; Franke, 2008; Franke, Redman, Johnson and Michalek, 2009). At the time of writing in late 2009, MillMapperÖ is in successful use at a rate of approximately 170 surveys and associated reports per annum at processing plants in Australasia, South America, North America and Africa. This paper presents the introduction of CrusherMapperÖ, the MillMapperÖ equivalent for crushers. CrusherMapperÖ also utilises high density, high accuracy laser scanning data, and features dedicated algorithms for three-dimensional monitoring of wear on crusher concaves and mantles. This facilitates the detection of wear hot spots or zones or localised liner failures, and accurate forecasting of reline tonnages and dates. It also for the first time provides the means to establish optimised concave and mantle shapes in order to achieve production targets. In contrast to any other currently utilised condition monitoring method, CrusherMapperÖ data collection can occur remotely and does not require any shutdown or crusher isolation. This method therefore does not interrupt crusher production while at the same time eliminating any confined space risk normally associated with taking measurements inside the crusher cavity.

Active geothermal fields show many of the characteristics seen in hydrothermal ore deposits but there are important differences as well. There are, for example, many differences in geology and chemistry between individual geothermal fields, even some nearby, and these include variations in host rock types (volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic and metamorphic), structures controlling fluid flow (normal, lateral, and, rarely, reverse faulting occur) and hydrological setting (valleys to elevated terrain).

Shear strength parameters of compacted clay liners are needed to analyse the stability of mine waste dumps containing compacted clay liners as sealing layers for potentially acid forming waste rock. A representative clay sample was supplied by McArthur River Mine from the mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, with an average as-supplied gravimetric moisture content of about 13.6%. The clay was compacted in a 100 mm by 100 mm direct shear box at the as-supplied moisture content to a dry density of 1.85 t/m3, representing the field compaction specification adopted by the mine. To determine the peak and ultimate shear strengths of the compacted clay, single-stage direct shear testing was carried out at nominal initial normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, representing shallow depths of burial in the North Overburden Emplacement Facility of about 2.8 m, 5.6 m and 11.1 m, respectively (assuming a waste rock wet unit weight of 18 kN/m3). Three shearing rates of 1 mm/min (rapid), 0.1 mm/min (intermediate) and 0.01 mm/min (slow) were applied to study the influence of shearing rate on shear strength. In addition, the development of a residual shear plane was tested by reversal and re-shearing in the direct shear box. In the first shearing, the peak and ultimate shear strengths are determined. The normal load was then removed and the box rewound to its starting position. The normal load was then re-applied and the specimen re-sheared. Two reversals were applied to each specimen, and it was found that there was no significant reduction in shear strength. Finally, based on a range of shear strengths obtained in the laboratory for McArthur River Mine clay and other materials by various laboratories over time, shear strength parameters for the compacted clay were recommended for use by the mine.CITATION:Xu, Y, Williams, D J and Hacker, J, 2018. More complex ore bodies with lowering grades increase the challenges of maintaining high throughput, energy efficiency and required particle size for optimal downstream processing in grinding circuits. Continuous and often rapidly changing characteristics of the mill feed requires constant focus to operate the circuit at optimal level. Modern process instruments, on-line analyzers, monitoring and process control systems provide attractive and managed options to increase the circuits’ capability to respond to the challenge, often in phases and in rather short time period. Furthermore, well instrumented and performing base level automation in the grinding circuit enables advanced process control (APC) strategies that utilize measurements from the whole circuit to stabilize and optimize production. In this paper alternatives for incorporating process measurements and controls to typical grinding circuits are proposed. Engineering education has become a matter of national concern, at last, so I would like to talk about the links between the mining industry, the universities and technological developments. The Australasian mining industry and the mining schools have collaborated closely since the first school was established in 1871 and during those years there were a series of remarkable technological developments. For example:In the late 1880s George AndersoIl Richard developed chloride leaching of gold at Mt Morgan. This made a large difference to the wealth of Mt Morgan Mining Ltd.In the mid 1890s Robert Sticht demonstrated that pyrite smelting was an economically feasible process at Mt Lyell and the wealth which came to Mt Lyell Mining Co from his outstanding work made it one of the great companies in the country.During the first 15 years of this century flotation was developed at Broken Hill and it has proved to be one of the great technological inventions of this century.In the 1920s G K Williams started his outstanding work on lead smelting and refining at Port Pirie, this was work which ultimately re-wrote the text book on lead metallurgy and established Port Pirie as the mecca for lead metallurgists.In the 1920s also Frank Stillwell, later joined by Austin Edwards, established the new science of mineragraphy at the University of Melbourne. They were both great geologists, both were superb scientists and oddly enough both were outstanding athletes.In the 1930s Dr Ian Wark, a man in the front rank of Australian scientists of any period, started his outstanding work on flotation, work which resulted in a text book which remains a leader in its field today.In the 1930s also Arnold Black at Broken Hill South Ltd picked up the work which had been done at Mt Lyell many years previously and eventually wrote the papers on hydraulic fill which demonstrated that he led the world in fill technology. What a remarkable story of achievement it was, it laid the groundwork for the great industry we have today. It was possible because the industry was well supported by outstanding university schools and I would like to talk about some of these.

In 1976 the Pitjantjatjara Council was established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA), for the initial purpose of organising and bringing together three similar Indigenous groups. These members of the Pitjantjatjara Council of Central Australia were demanding land rights and to legally protect their traditional lands. The Land Rights movement was more focused on the South Australian Government that became more receptive to the general notion that Aboriginal freehold land could be attainable.For almost five years, Pitjantjatjara CouncilÆs intense negotiations took place with the Dunstan and Tonkin Governments culminating in the final passage of legislation by 1981. A bi-partisan approach by Government and opposition applauded by all South Australians for its mature and socially responsible actions, in line with the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Despite the similarities between South Australian and the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation, there still remains one obvious distinction. In the Northern Territory case, its legislation established æLand CouncilsÆ as statutory authorities that are responsible for the management and use of designated Aboriginal lands. On the other hand, South Australian legislation fails to include any reference to æLand CouncilsÆ as defined in the Northern Territory Act. The intention of establishing such æLand CouncilsÆ in the Northern Territory was, and is to provide legal, anthropological and other expect advisers that respond to the wishes and opinions of Traditional Aboriginal Owners. Negotiations between mining companies and Land Councils, will, after the granting of mining leases, monies are then transferred to those Councils being a percentage of royalty entitlements. While the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) (Act) does provide royalty arrangements to Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP), a body corporate pursuant to the Act as a Landholding Body (and not as a æLand CouncilÆ), it does not provide any royalty payments for the legal and anthropological services by the Pitjantjatjara Council for providing essentially similar services as the Northern Territory Land Councils. The limited services by AP do provide complimentary services from other organisations û including the Pitjantjatjara Council. There are approximately 4000 Anangu members who reside on AP Lands and more than 1000 other Anangu members live near AP Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These people are defined as APÆs æTraditional OwnersÆ by virtue of their affiliation to portions of AP Lands. As a result, the depth and understanding of spiritual beliefs and customs are strongly present as it relates to the whole of the Lands. Most of these members reside at permanent communities that spread unevenly about the northern and south-western parts of AP Lands. In addition, there are numerous æHomelandsÆ where families and extended families have establish homes, with electricity and water supplies on those Traditional Lands (see Appendix 1 and 2 of this paper depicting the map showing AP Lands and also showing stunning photographs taken during late last year). All roads and airstrips are unsealed between communities and Homelands and the essential services to all communities are limited and costly to provide, and require continuous upgrading. Capital expenditure on infrastructure is sorely needed and alarming levels of unemployment is of serious concern. Tjilpi (older) Anangu members have continually discuss the urgency to provide employment and education for the future of their children and grandchildren while balancing the needs of maintaining cultural and spiritual considerations. It is thus a growing realisation by many Traditional Owners that long-term benefits occur as a result of exploration and production of oil or minerals. There are promising results from Primary Industry and Resources of South AustraliaÆs (PIRSA) Aero-magnetic Surveys on the Musgrave and Mann Ranges and soon to be completed surveys of the remaining southern half of AP Lands (see Appendix 3). PIRSA and mining companies û such as Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd and Delta Gold NL û have been more conscious of the necessity for improving the dissemination of information to Traditional Owners and to AP members. With recent findings of large nickel deposits just over the border in Western Australia, there is a strong indication that discoveries may occur on AP Lands as similar geological information is present on the east Musgrave Block. Consequently there are concerted efforts by the legal and anthropological services of the Pitjantjatjara Council to arrange Workshops and Summit meeting to give extra information û particularly information concerning the true effect of large-scale mining operations û to members to properly consider these proposals. Pitjantjatjara Council will play a major role in any decisions effecting Traditional Owners and AP, and will ensure orderly and professional services when dealing with legal, cultural and sensitive matters. This paper addresses the historical and current relationship between Pitjantjatjara Council and AP, with an emphasis on mining operations on AP Lands. It argues that future economic and social development on AP Lands hinge predominantly on the legal recognition of the Pitjantjatjara Council for its ongoing role, responsibilities and protection afforded to AP and its Traditional Owners.

Operating well designed and maintained surface mine haul roads is the key to minimising truck haulage costs - in itself a significant component of the total cost per tonne mined. Existing and proposed mining operations are subject to scrutiny, both from the economic and environmental perspectives. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, 'greener' operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations - simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations and sustainability impacts. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and contributions to resource sustainability - is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these improvements that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road is designed, and, critically, the technological solutions that can contribute to a company's sustainability initiatives. This paper examines the current state of mine road design and operation, together with the economic and environmental issues associated with under-performance. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the economic and environmental contributions that technology in road design and management can deliver to sustainable operations. Utilising innovation is the key to long-term sustainability and as a means of positioning the industry for the imminent structural changes to the economy and environment, changes which are now within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

Background geochemistry of streams in mineralised terranes is affected by (a) natural sulphide oxidation and associated metallic discharges; and (b) previous mining history and associated discharges. Both of these processes elevate background metal concentrations by (i) directly adding dissolved metals to stream water; and (ii) adding sulphide-bearing sediments' to the stream system, to be trapped in old channels and bars for later chemical decomposition in situ or after flood reworking. Definition of downstream geochemical background, involving sediments and low-flow dissolved chemistry prior to mining is prudent, as this will provide a benchmark for any required estimation of new inputs from, for example, accidental tailings discharges. Two high-profile examples from western USA illustrate these points. Summitville mine in southern Colorado is an environmental disaster left when the operating company went bankrupt in 1991. Acid metal-rich discharges are leaving the site into a river system used for agricultural irrigation. However, nearby sub-catchments have substantial naturally occurring acid metal-rich discharges and locally discharge natural sulphide-rich debris flows into the same river. Distinction between natural and anthropogenic pollution in the downstream reaches is difficult. Early mining at Cooke City, Montana (New World District) released large volumes of sulphide-bearing tailings into the river system when a tailings impoundment dam failed. The event was equivalent to a 100-year flood, and tailings were deposited for 30 km downstream. These tailings are currently oxidising, and are being reworked into the modem stream during high flow events, thus perturbing background geochemistry.

There has been a gradual increase in the volume of internationally traded thermal and coking coal, with emphasis on blending of coals rather than single coal usage. New Zealand can take advantage of this situation, especially with its low ash and sulphur content coals. However, there is a need to clarify the thermal and coking behaviour of these coals as they relate to other market players, to benefit both the consumer and supplier. The high volatile matter contents of New Zealand coking coals are due to their high vitrinite content, which causes them to demonstrate stronger coking properties over a wider rank range than Gondwana coals. These same high vitrinite levels appear to correspond with lower initial softening temperatures than for Gondwana coals of similar rank. Preliminary results using thermogravimetric analysis also suggest that New Zealand high volatile bituminous coals can be used to substitute for higher rank Gondwana coals in combustion processes.

BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions.
