Despite a long history of production of industrial minerals and rocks, New South Wales still offers significant opportunities for exploration for and development of these minerals. Exploration for opal, sapphires, and zeolites in the State has been particularly encouraged by pioneering geological studies by the Department of Minerals and Energy, which have resulted in the development of important new geological concepts and exploration techniques. Large areas with potential for these minerals have not yet been tested. In the case of sapphires, the studies have identified a new type of deposit which is'the source of most of the sapphires mined from alluvial deposits. Recent price increases for heavy minerals, a re-evaluation of previous exploration in coastal regions, and a recognition of suitable environments in inland New South Wales have stimulated renewed exploration both onshore and offshore and have led to increased production. Significant potential also exists for development of a number of other minerals, including: topaz, which occurs in large, unusual and perhaps unique deposits in northern New South Wales; dimension stone (particularly granite); bentonite; diatomite; and silica for metallurgical use. Potential also exists for development of construction material resources, particularly construction sand, which is in short supply in the Sydney region.

The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible. THE machine from which the following results were obtained makes one of a row of seven at work in the Junction North, Concentration Mill at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It consists essentially of a belt for dressing purposes, which travels round two 12-in drums situated at either end of a wooden frame. This frame is supported on wooden legs, and the whole is affixed to two iron castings, one on either side of the frame. A to-and-fro motion is obtained from an eccentric shaft, which, together with the stationary end of the supporting legs, is carried by the iron castings. A belt drive to the forward drum provides a constant rate of travel to the dressing belt.The top half of the dressing belt is supported on 3-in rollers spaced about 12-in centres along the frame of the vanner. A fairly thick dressing belt is used, and no trouble whatever is experienced from the formation of gutters between the rollers.These belts are 28 ft 4 in long, 4 ft wide, 3-16 in thick, and are made of two-ply 32-oz duck, with a coating of rubber on either side. The surface available for dressing is about 10 ft 6 in x 3 ft 8 in- ie, about 38'5 square feet. The majority of surface tailings storage facilities continue to employ sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition. Surface TSFs are typically sized and operated in a way to minimise the initial capital cost of the facility, driven largely by the net present value approach to accounting. This generally leads to too small a storage, too fast a rate of rise of the tailings, and difficulties in managing supernatant water. In turn, this results in wet and soft tailings deposits of high moisture content and low density, and the need for frequent and costly tailings dam raises. Further, such tailings deposits often do not facilitate closure and rehabilitation of the facility. Globally, there are on average over two failures annually of such tailings dams, resulting in loss of life, damage to infrastructure and environmental impact downstream, and the loss of company shareholder value and reputation. Recent high profile tailings dam failures are threatening the mining industry’s financial and social licence to operate.Among the physical processes that tailings undergo on sub-aerial deposition are beaching, hydraulic sorting down the beach according to particle size and specific gravity, settling, consolidation, and desiccation on exposure to the sun and wind. Beaching and hydraulic sorting have proved difficult to test at laboratory scale and difficult to model, and are best assessed in the field. Settling, consolidation and desiccation may be assessed at laboratory scale, but to date there has been an absence of tests to form the basis for the design and management of tailings deposition, and ultimate closure and rehabilitation. The paper describes recent advances in tailings testing methods, including a purpose-built slurry consolidometer that tests the settling and consolidation of tailings from a slurry consistency, simulating increasing tailings depth to about 50 m; and a purpose-built instrumented column that tests the settling, self-weight consolidation and desiccation of a surface layer of tailings, also from a slurry consistency. Selected test results from these two apparatus are presented in the paper, together with brief descriptions of how they may be used to better design tailings slurry deposition. This paper examines the integration of risk management into the design philosophy of a project to produce a æzero baseÆ design, which targets a minimum capital cost without adversely impacting upon the operating costs of the resulting plant. The concept of zero base design is similar to zero base budgeting and the desired outcome is to improve the economy of the design. Design requirements are questioned in an attempt to distinguish preference, prejudice and myth from necessity. Where doubt remains a risk management approach is adopted. The key to risk management is not risk elimination, but risk mitigation. Risks can be managed by designing them out, but often this involves considerable capital cost penalties and it is more attractive to accept the risk and design an operating strategy to deal with it. The paper discusses this with some examples of real world risk mitigation strategies that resulted in substantial capital cost savings. The paper concludes that as much as a quarter of project capital costs can be eliminated by a combination of zero base design and carefully crafted risk mitigation strategies.

A comprehensive analysis of rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging: interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcore is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure. Both solution types rely on constant orientations (orientational stability) of the selected structure, but the internal solution actually provides its own test of orientational stability. External solutions are the norm in outcropping situations and internal solutions are invaluable in blind situations. In blind situations sequential "internal then external" solutions can be used respectively to provide a reference structure and then use this for subsequent external solutions at individual points downhole. Blind prospects can now be drilled and interpreted as easily as outcropping prospects. Each solution type has its own optimum requirements. External solutions are ambiguous for certain orientational relationships between the drillhole and the reference structure (for example, a perpendicular relationship), hence drillholes in which external solutions are planned should be designed to avoid these orientations. Internal solutions are ambiguous for straight drill paths, and are most unambiguously resolved when the drill path attains maximum drillhole dimensionality, that is, it occupies a wide variety of orientations in 3D space; hence drillholes in which internal solutions are planned should be designed as combinations of non-parallel holes or as individual strongly curved holes. For both solution types an understanding of the kind of structural fertility required leads to intelligent design of drill paths, which is termed structural drill targeting. It is distinct from spatial drill targeting, which is the process which defines and (x,y,z) point-or volume-target. Effective design of drilling programs requires both structural and spatial targeting. The external and internal solutions for vectorial parameters are implemented via (1) visual (qualitative), (2) stereographic, or (3) core orienting frame procedures. Each of these has its own advantages. Stereographic procedures have been simplified via the erection of a drillcore reference frame in which three fundamental angles are defined, and the formulation of an all-inclusive set of stereographic recipes for determining orientations from the measurement of these angles. Non- vectorial structural parameters comprise an ad hoc array of useful measures which are simply described by numbers. Examples are angles between structures, and density of structures. Such parameters (some of which provide useful vectors toward ore bodies) are invaluable in drillcore because they can be measured and recorded rapidly, without determining the orientation of the core. In a summary, non-oriented drillcore can now be structurally mapped exactly as if it were outcrop. Interpretation of the significant volume of unique structural information which is beginning to flow from this system can be optimised by using, in addition to the conventional cross section and longditudinal section, three new modes of presentation. The natural cross section is that section in space normal to a principal structure of interest. It is a section in which it is advisable to drill to obtain certain structural information, and in which the results need to be presented. A newly defined unique cross sectional orientational symbol is recommended for dramatic improvement in the quality of information presented in cross sections. Stacked level maps are a powerful adjunct to cross sections.

Drill hole magnetometric resistivity (DHMMR) is a relatively recent addition to the explorationistsÆ suite of techniques for finding further resources in the vicinity of a drill hole. The method relies on gathering of an applied current into zones which are less resistive than the country rocks and it was first applied to exploration programs looking for weakly conductive sulphides, such as, for example, carbonate-hosted zinc deposits. More recently, it has been applied to a wider range of deposit styles, including highly conductive nickel sulphides. It has been found that the technique is capable of not only detecting mineralisation not seen by conventional electromagnetic (EM) techniques, but it can detect at a greater distance. Also, whilst EM is superior at defining tabular-shaped conductors, DHMMR may be more effective at finding cigar shaped sulphides. This paper presents a number of examples illustrating these findings.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

The purpose of this paper is to describe briefly the clean-up procedure adopted at the treatment plant of Paringa Mining & Exploration Co. Ltd. at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.A clean-up is carried out at the end of each four-weekly period, and all figures subsequently quoted are taken from a summary of the results of the eight periods ending 8th April, 1941.STRAKING AND AMALGAMATIONOf the total gold won 22· 77 per cent. is recovered by straking and amalgamation.The discharges of both the primary and secondary ball mills are pumped over a common set of five ten feet long by three feet wide straking tables, set at an angle of 10 degrees, before passing to the 14 ft. diameter by 30 ft. by 8 ft. Dorr bowl classifier.This classifier is in closed circuit with both of the ball mills, hence the whole of the circulating load of the fine grinding circuit, which approximates to 800 per cent., is required to pass over the straking tables. For convenience in handling, corduroy cloths are used in lengths of 5 feet, and are picked up and replaced by clean cloths at four-hourly intervals. The avaHable straking area provided is, therefore, 900 square feet, or approximately 3·30 square feet per original ton per 24 hours. The density of the pulp passing over the tables is about 54 per cent. solids, the area provided per ton of pulp per 24 hours being approximately o· 2() square feet. Washing of the corduroy cloths is carried out on the day shift only, about 800 lb. of strake concentrate being obtained daily.This concentrate is sluiced from the washing trough on the elevated straking floor to the 4 ft. by 2 ft. diameter amalgamating barrel located in the gold room below.The barrel is of standard design and is rotated at 25 r.p.m. It is charged each day at 4 p.m., and grinding of the strake concentrate at approximately 70 per cent. solids is continued until 8 a.m. the following day. The barrel is then stopped, and the contents generously diluted with water, and after a few minutes rotation some of the slime is carefully poured off through the small discharge hole. This dilution and decantation is repeated until a good deal of the valueless slime has been removed.A further quantity of strake concentrate is then charged to the barrel, which is allowed a further 16 hours grinding period. After again diluting and decanting, approximately 25 lb. of mercury and 15 lb. of lime are added to the charge, which is then given an amalgamation period of 2 hours before cleaning up.By the process of grinding, diluting and removal of slime by decanting...

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. The Otago Schist is crossed by numerous deformation zones that formed in the latter stages of metamorphism and uplift of the metamorphic belt. These deformation zones are long (tens of km) linear features at the regional scale, and are generally narrow (km scale or less). Many of these structural zones separate schist domains with different rock types and structural/metamorphic histories. The Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone is one such deformation zone, and this zone hosts the active Macraes gold mine. The Rise & Shine Shear Zone, 80 km NW of Macraes, is also enriched in gold and has been mined historically. Mineralisation in both these shear zones occurred during the transition from ductile to brittle deformation as the schist belt was uplifted from greenschist facies metamorphic conditions. Recrystallisation of quartz and micas in the early stages was overprinted by cataclasis, with sulfide and gold precipitation throughout. Many of the other late metamorphic deformation zones formed under similar greenschist to sub-greenschist facies conditions, with similar overprinting of recrystallisation textures and folds by more brittle textures such as breccias. Under these conditions, originally regionally pervasive deformation at the highest metamorphic grades was evolving towards more focussed high strain zones at lower temperatures and pressures. Shear zones initially focussed fluid flow along microshears and mineral grain boundaries, resulting in 1 to 100 m scale alteration and replacement in the host schist, with only local development of quartz veins. Fluid flow was not controlled by open fractures, and the rate of fluid movement was probably slow and pervasive. After uplift into the brittle regime, the schist belt underwent tectonic extension. Extension was accompanied by development of swarms of steeply dipping veins, with localised mineralised normal faults. Hydrothermal fluid flow throughout this uplift history was a normal consequence of late stage devolatilisation of the metamorphic belt. Hence, all late metamorphic deformation zones should be considered prospective for gold accumulation.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a mineral resource assessment study of the Coromandel region, due for completion in July 2000. A key part of the study is the assembly of a geographic information system (GIS), a computerised tool for layering, analysing and presenting spatial information. The GIS is being assembled with ArcInfo/ArcView software and to date includes layers for a digital terrain model, an aeromagnetic map (open file mining company data), a geological map (from the QMAP project), areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data.

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. Wangaloa Coal Mine opened in 1945, and by the time of its closure in 1989, had produced 750 000 tonnes of coal and disturbed an area of 75 ha. The original mining licence required land rehabilitation to exotic forestry, however the current owner, Solid Energy, has worked with Crown Minerals and local councils to write a new rehabilitation objective. The site is now being stabilised and replanted with native species, and may be available for public use before the coal mining licence expires in 2007. Site discharge permits expire in 2017, and by that time, it is anticipated that discharge water chemistry will be similar to background levels. MWH are currently contracted for management of the mine rehabilitation project. The Kaitangata coal unit mined at Wangaloa is sulfurous lignite with associated pyrite. Kaitangata coal contains 3.2 wt per cent sulfur, which is higher than most New Zealand coals. Initial analyses at Wangaloa indicate low pH (2.56.2) values in soil, groundwater and surface waters as a result of acid rock drainage (ARD) processes, leading to increased metal mobility and challenging conditions for vegetation. Pilot studies indicate pinus radiata needles contain up to 67 mg/kg boron, and elevated As, Cu and Zn concentrations in surface waters. The main lake at the site has a pH of approximately 4.9, despite lime dosage in 2002. There is a real need for a complete geochemical model of the Wangaloa coal mine. Such a model could be applied to similar restoration projects, and would assist by pinpointing geochemical processes and toxic metal relationships most harmful to the receiving environments. Using this model, rehabilitation in the future will be targeted and more efficient. This project is part of a larger scheme to characterise and model the Wangaloa mine site restoration, including waters, soil, vegetation, geology and invertebrates.

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

Modem mineral exploration and development takes place within a data-rich context underpinned by a wide range of data acquisition, processing and interpretation technologies. This leads to requirements for consistent and explicit methods by which the relative risks - or success probabilities - of exploration programs can be assessed and communicated. Bayesian risk assessment methods are outlined which provide a starting point for this more rigorous approach to exploration investment.   Effective governance of information technologies becomes a core function of the modem competitive Board. As such it becomes a component of any business audit and any assessment of the quality and success potential of a company. Limited data however suggest that the average Board may be under-represented in this increasingly critical skill area.
