In this paper, oxidation potentials measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferro-cyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH are related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are presented to show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide on the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of a number of investigations,'-6 and several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved from these studies. Wark and Cox7 and Gaudin8 have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues9-11 have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland 12 has shown that although both of these theories accurately describe the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition, they fail to describe the relation between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart 13 suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar4,6 has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg per liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10. These results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface. Gründer and Bornl4 have stated that depression may be due to the formation of the compound K2Fe(II)Fe(CN)6 at the pyrite-solution interface. This compound is thought to be an interaction product between the K2Fe(CN)6-2 ion from solution and the Fe++ ion at the pyrite surface and, accordingly, K4Fe(CN)6 should depress pyrite at least as effectively as KCN. This was proven experimentally, but there was no simple relation between the depression of pyrite and the concentration of either KCN or K4Fe(CN)6 in solution. In view of the many mechanisms that have been proposed for pyrite depression by cyanide, it is apparent that a clear understanding of the phenomena occurring in these systems is lacking. One reason for this may be the fact that the species responsible for pyrite flotation in the presence of xanthate is not the xan-thate ion but rather dixanthogen.15 Since the oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen is dependent on the oxidation potential of the solution, it would seem that knowledge of these potentials would be a requisite to understanding the pyrite-xanthate-cyanide system. It is the object of this paper to measure both the oxidation potential and pH of the pyrite systems in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and xanthate and to relate these values to flotation response. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND 'TECHNIQUES In the experiments discussed here, pure potassium ethyl xanthate was used as collector, and reagent grade potassium cyanide, potassium ferrocyanide, and potassium ferricyanide were used as depressants. Reagent grade HC1 and KOH were added for pH adjustment. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in all experimental work. Two natural samples of pyrite were used in the investigation. Sample preparation for flotation included dry grinding with a mortar and pestle and sizing the product to 100 x 200 mesh. Prior to flotation, a 0.75-gm sample of pyrite was added to a solution containing a known amount of depressant at the desired pH value, and the system was conditioned for 4 min. Following this, a known amount of collector was added and the system was conditioned for another 4 min. Solid-solution alloys of the Ta- Ti system containing up to 70 at. pct Ti were melted and fabricated into wire. Steady magnetic-field measurements of cold-worked wires at 4.2°K indicate that the resistive critical field increases smoothly with increasing titanium, reaching a maximum of 93 kG (J = 1 amp per sq cm) for a composition of about 50 at. pct Ti. The composition dependence of the resistive critical field indicates it is largely paramagnetically limited for alloys containing more than 35 at. pct Ti. For cold-worked wires the value of the critical current density, Jc , was found to be insensitive to composition changes for compositions in excess of 20 at. pct Ti. It was observed that Jc could be increased by final-size heat treatment at 400°C without altering the value of- the resistive critical field. Experimental data are used to calculate the electronic specific-heat coefficient and the "upper critical field" for the alloys studied. THE effect and importance of metallurgical structure on superconducting properties have been summarized by Livingston and Schadler.1 Specific work on solid-solution alloys such as Nb-zr2-7 and Nb-Ti5-7 have shown that critical current density (Jc) and superconducting transition temperature are structure-sensitive. Berlincourt et al.6,8,9 in their studies of transition-metal alloys find that Ta-Ti alloys remain superconducting at fields comparable to Nb-Ti alloys. 6,8 Transverse critical current tests of a Ta-10 at. pct Ti alloy10 and longitudinal critical current tests of a Ta-25 at. pct Ti alloy1' indicate that such alloys are capable of carrying high currents at intermediate fields (-40 kG). The work reported in the present paper was undertaken to explore the superconducting properties of further compositions in the Ta-Ti alloy system as well as the structure sensitivity of the superconducting properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by melting tantalum (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., 99.96 pct purity) and iodide, crystal bar titanium (Foote Mineral Co., 99.92 pct purity) mixtures in an arc furnace on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode. Melting was accomplished in a purified, gettered argon atmosphere at pressures from 250 to 400 Torr. Each alloy was turned and remelted fourteen times to assure complete mixing of tantalum and titanium. Ex- cessive coring in the cast samples was, nevertheless, observed. This was somewhat reduced by annealing in vacuo at 1000°C for 13 hr. The ingots were then machined to 0.250 in. diam, jacketed in Type 304 stainless-steel tubing, and swaged to 0.140 in. diam. They were then drawn to 0.010-in.-diam wire. Alloys containing up to 70 at. pct Ti were readily cold-drawn to wire in this manner. Later experiments showed that oxygen additions up to -3000 ppm could also be cold-worked into wire. Test samples for superconductivity measurements in the 2-in, air-core Bitter solenoids of the M.I.T. National Magnet Laboratory were prepared from 10-in. lengths of 0.010-in.-diam wire, cleaned of residual wire-drawing lubricant. Current contacts were made by clamping clean copper tubing over both No. 18 current lead wire and the ultrasonically indium-tinned ends of the specimen wire.12 Potential leads of No. 32 copper wire were connected to the specimen by ultrasonic soldering in an indium bath. The potential lead separation was about 4 cm, corresponding to the circumference of the Bakelite rod to which the wire was affixed with half-mil Teflon tape. The final specimen configuration is shown in Fig. 1. Specimens were lowered into a liquid helium bath (4.2oK) in a double solenoid dewar and positioned so that the maximum magnetic field was oriented transverse to the wire axis of the gage section. Measurements were made by passing a current through the specimen at a preset solenoidal magnetic field. The current was increased until a 1-pv potential difference appeared across the gage section (1/4 µv per cm). Permeation rates for nitrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured in the temperature range 1800° to 2600°C at nitrogen pressure differentials of 1.0 and 0.1 atm. Gas chromatography was used to measure the quantities of nitrogen which permeated through 0.26-and 0.53-mm-thick membranes. Permeation rates were proportional to the difference between the square roots of the nitrogen pressure on each side of the membrane and inversely proportional to membrane thickness, indicating that atomic nitrogen was the difjusing species and that diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the process. Permeation coefficients calculated from the rates may be represented by the equation: where P is expressed in the units cu cm (stP)-mm per 1/2 sq cm-min-atm"' and 70.0 * 0.8 is the activation energy in kcal per mole of permeating species. In a previous paper' permeation rates were reported for hydrogen and for oxygen through tungsten. The permeation cells used for the hydrogen measurements were suitable for measuring nitrogen permeation under similar conditions, so the study was extended to include nitrogen. Permeation rates of nitrogen through the polycrys-talline arc-cast tungsten membranes were measured in the temperature range 1800" to 2600°C using two membrane thicknesses and two nitrogen pressure differentials. Permeation coefficients were calculated and the activation energy of the process determined. THEORY For diatomic gases which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at an elevated temperature where bulk diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the process is given by the equation: where: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, P = temperature-dependent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane, t = time, p1 = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, and d = thickness of membrane. When bulk diffusion is the rate-controlling step, and the solubility of the gas obeys Henry's law, a further relationship is that, for any given temperature and pressure, the permeation is the product of diffusivity and the amount in solution. The permeation coefficient, P, is temperature-dependent according to the equation: where: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cell Design and Experimental Apparatus. Two of the permeation cells used for the previous measurements of hydrogen permeation are shown in Fig. 1. Each consisted of a cylindrical chamber divided into two parts by a permeation membrane fabricated from high-purity (>99.9 pct W) wrought tungsten sheet made from vacuum arc-cast tungsten. The membrane in one cell was 0.26 mm thick and the other was 0.53 mm. The fabrication of these cells was described previously.' The permeation cells were mounted vertically in a high-temperature tungsten resistance furnace and the membranes and the center portions heated to test temperatures. Temperatures were measured by sighting an optical pyrometer on the edge of the membrane through a small hole in a tungsten plate which was fastened to the side of the cell. This arrangement provided an approximate black-body condition and eliminated the need for emittance corrections. Appropriate corrections were made for the quartz window through which the temperatures were measured. Argon gas flowed through the 10-liter volume of the furnace at the rate of 4.7 liters per min. The X-ray Kossel-line method has been used preaioz~sly for measuring lattice parameters to accuracies of 1 part in 100,000.5 A second application of this method is described for determining the crystallographic orientation of a randomly positioned single-crysta1 spherical volume that can he as small as 50 µ in diameter, within accuracy limits of ±1/2 deg. The theory, experimental procedure, and interpretation of Kossel-line patterns and an experimenta1 verification of the predicted orientation relationship of the cph k and fee a Cu-Si phases are presented. This orientation relationship can be described as (111)a, (00.1)k; [110]a [11.0]k. In addition, the lattice parameter of the a phase was found to he a. = 3.62154 ± 0.00014Å. The Kossel-line method when used in conjunction with electron microanalysis is shown to he capable of providing a complete chemical and structural analysis of a given crystal. THE most easily accomplished methods for determining the orientation of a single crystal are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Although certain materials can be oriented to within ± 1 deg accuracy by observation of exterior macroscopic features, such as etch pits, cleavage faces, or growth features, the Laue method is generally preferred for routine laboratory application. Both back-reflection and transmission patterns are coordinated by appropriate reference charts and are plotted in terms of reflection plane poles (normals) on a stereographic projection. Orientation is deduced by relating the pole distribution (which is fixed by the crystallographic symmetry of the specimen) to two specified external reference directions. The Laue method has several limitations. 1) Orientation can rarely be determined to better than ±l deg accuracy. Principal errors involve inaccuracy in specimen-to-film distance, measurement confidence of individual Laue spots, and stereographic plotting. 2) Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wave length diffracted to a given spot, it is not possible to determine supplementary crystallographic data, such as interplanar spacings and lattice parameters. 3) The method is generally limited to specimens of cubic symmetry or to specimens of high symmetry and known structure. 4) The relatively large cross-sectional area of the incident X-ray beam generally precludes the measurement of relative grain orientation in a polycrystalline material.* _____ Several of these limitations can be overcome by application of the Kossel-line method, which has been previously employed for precision lattice-parameter determinations.'-= For this method, a point source of divergent monochromatic X-rays is generated within the crystal by means of an incident electron beam. The divergent X-rays which fulfill the Bragg law are diffracted by the specimen and are recorded on a film placed either in transmission or back reflection. Analysis of the film yields a direct measurement of orientation and lattice-spacing values to an accuracy of ±1/2 pct. As analyses can be obtained from spherical specimen volumes as small as 50 µ in diameter, the method provides a means for structural analysis of second-phase or impurity precipitates within a given matrix. The primary limitation of the Kossel-line method is the requirement for an electron microanalyzer or similar apparatus capable of producing a finely focused electron beam. This paper is designed to present the theory, experimental procedure, and geometrical interpretation of Kossel patterns. The experimentally determined orientation relationship between the k and a phases occurring in the Cu-Si system and a precision measurement of the a lattice parameter are presented as a practical application of the method. THEORY OF KOSSEL LINES Divergent X-ray beam photography utilizes an effective point source of characteristic X-rays which, when diffracted from a single crystal, form numerous diffraction and absorption cones that are recorded on film.7 The cones generated from a source lying within the crystal are called Kossel lines.' Although the X-ray scattering from a divergent point source contained within a crystal is described in terms of Laue dynamical theory,9 the directions of the diffracted spectra can be ade-

Dry desiccant dehydrators at each wellsite tnaintaitz the dew point of the gas below 17F. Telemetering facililies permit control of field operations from a central instrunlent console. Corrosion control ineasures, design coilsiderations and material specifications pertainitz to these specia1 conditions are cliscussed. INTRODUCTION Natural gas containing 25.65 per cent H2S and 4.75 pcr cent CO, is produced from the Pine Creek field, Alta. It is dehydrated at wellheads, gathered at 2.200 psig and transported 26 miles to the Windfall field where it is delivered to the inlet of injection compressors at 1,800 psig. The daily average volume of gas transported is 160 MMcf. The project is believed to be unique in its combination of percentage of hydrogen sulfide, operating pressure and transportation distance. This paper describes the project and presents details of some of the design features, corrosion control program and centralized automatic operational control. The Pine Creek field project is one phase of a joint operation of two fields—thc other being the Windfall field. The two fields lie about 30 miles north of Edson, Alta. and 20 miles west of Whitecourt, Alta., respectively, as shown on the map (Fig. 1). They are owned by the same interests and operated according to a plan for maximum economic recovery of products. The Windfall Leduc D-3 reservoir contains a rich condensate-bearing gas containing 15.5 per cent HIS. The gas from the Pine Creek field contains only very small quantities of butane and heavier products. The Windfall reservoir is being cycled to obtain maximum condensate recovery using gas from the Pine Creek field as the displacing fluid, while producing the residue sales gas for both fields from the Windfall field. The Pine Creek field development and gas-gathering facilities are shown on the map (Fig. 2). The producing formation is the Leduc D-3 reef at a depth of 11,300 ft. The original reservoir pressure was 4,590 psia at 7,400 ft subsea and the temperature is 245F. Eight wells are equippcd with dry desiccant dehydrators with the following capacity ratings: three at 35 MMcf/D; three at 20 MMcf/D; and two at 10 MMcf/D. WELLHEAD EQUIPMENT Dry desiccant dehydrators were designed to reduce the water content of the saturated wellhead stream to 2.5 lb of water/MMcf at 2,000 psig. This specification was necessary to prevent hydrates and corrosion forming in the pipeline which will operate at temperatures as low as 20F. A typical flow diagram is shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 4 is a photograph of one of the wellhead installations. Some of the design details given below are subject to modification in the field. The well-stream flowing temperatures range from 135 to 170F. Wellhead flowing pressures up to 3,200 psig are reduced to the dehydrator-operating pressure of about 2,100 psig by throttling through a pressure control valve. The gas is then passed through an aerial cooler where its temperature is reduced to 105F. thus removing over half

John Chipman(authors' reply)-—That is the object of showing this effect for slags of two different basicities. In the more basic, the silica is more firmly tied up in the slag and is less easily reduced. It is therefore less able to interfere with desulphurization. THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.' Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.' Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general, development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.238 The axis of the syncline dips to the southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.' Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary band of secondary clays found intermittently at points across the south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.' In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.' It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

A good tire program must begin at the top; management must have an awareness of the tremendous potential for cost saving that tires represent. At Reserve Mining Co., tires account for 33% of the cost of maintaining its 44 tractor-trailer side-dump haulers and 22% of its 32 rear-dump trucks. In comparison, engine overhauls account for only 6% of the maintenance dollar. Doubling the present engine life would save only 3%. The open-pit mine, located near Babbitt, Minn., moves about 46 million t/y with its off highway fleet. Mine roadways total in excess of 160 km (100 miles) and about 1200 tires are in active use at any given time.

T Tahawus, N. Y., National Lead Co. operates the MacIntyre development. Here the world's largest titanium mine produces 5200 long tons of ore per day and pours 8000 long tons of waste rock over its dumps. Concentrated ilmenite is sent by rail to National Lead Co. pigment plants, and a second product, magnetite, is sold to steel producers in raw form or is agglomerated and shipped as sinter. Several earlier attempts had been made to produce iron from the deposits, which have been known since 1826. These attempts failed, chiefly because of titanium impurity. In 1941 the present owners re-established the operation for production of war-scarce ilmenite, and the impurity became the main product.

SMELTING of iron ore, manufacture of steel, and the fabrication of ferrous metal products are all processes that require energy. Charcoal was adequate, to supply this energy for the relatively simple processes of the early iron-masters. In the fourth decade of the nineteenth century, anthracite and bituminous coal and later coke supplanted charcoal for the smelting of iron. So far as the chemical phases of the process were concerned, charcoal was an ideal iron-furnace fuel. It had practically no sulphur, and its ash, besides being low in quantity, consisted chiefly of lime and alkalies, thus supplying a part of the flux required for smelting the ore. The ash of coal and coke on the other hand, being largely silica, had itself to be fluxed with bases added to the charge. Physically, however, coke proved to have many advantages over charcoal, which could not be used in the furnaces of today. The chief reason, however, for the change from charcoal to coke was the impossibility of maintaining an adequate wood supply.

A survey of the role of the United Nations Special Fund in the field of mining and metallurgy. An aircraft, manned by Canadians and crammed with modern scientific instruments, crisscrosses over the dense rainforests of tropical Surinam at Y4 kilometer intervals, prospecting for valuable mineral deposits. Mill head samples of Burmese lead and zinc ores arrive at a Colorado laboratory for analysis and experimentation to determine the best milling and ore-dressing techniques. At the new Institute for Applied Geology in Manila, Philippine mining engineers receive instructions from a Finnish petrologist. These scenes illuminate only a fraction of the exciting work in the mining and metallurgical fields being carried out by the United Nations Special Fund.

For the past two and one-half years, various emission control strategies were jointly developed by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners to com- ply with the clean air requirements at its Homer City Power Plant. Some of the available options for the SO2 emission control by the Homer City Owners were:l)cleaning of run-of-mine coal,2) scheduling of mining operations at its captive mines, 3) blending the captive mine coal with externally purchased low sulfur coa1,and 4) placing a partial FGD system. This paper describes two specific emission control strategies developed and implemented. These are: 1) production scheduling at the mining face to minimize sulfur variability, and 2) external purchasing of low sulfur coal for further blending. The main objective of this paper is to share our experiences on implementing the developed strategies. This paper emphasizesthe need for proper mine planning on a short-term basis, if the power plant is to meet the desired objective.
