THE yield stress, o of low-carbon steel has been shown to vary with the average grain diameter, d, according to the relation1-3 where o is taken to be the lower yield-point stress Of is the friction stress on an unlocked dislocation, and ky is a constant. The interpretation2,4 of ky in terms of dislocation theory relates this constant to the stress to unlock a source across a grain boundary. cottrel14 predicted that ky would increase with decreasing temperature. This was observed to be the case by Adams and coworkers5 in their investigation of niobium (columbium). However, petch6 and Backofen: both working with low-carbon steel, found ky insensitive to temperature. In his work with high-purity niobium, Johnson' found ky equal to zero. Evansg showed that k, was essentially zero for niobium containing nitrogen in an appreciable concentration range. The present experiments were designed to check this apparent anomaly in the value of ky in another Group V metal. Yield points were determined as a function of grain size at several temperatures for tantalum and a tantalum-tungsten alloy. The material used was double are-melted tantalum and a double are-melted alloy of 90 pct Ta and 10 pct tungsten (by weight), both obtained as unannealed, swaged rod. The impurity content of the materials is given in Table I. The tantalum was annealed at 1325"C. in a vacuum resistance furnace using a tantalum boat. The alloy was similarly annealed at 1660°C. Annealing times varied from 15 min to 2 hr, depending on the desired grain size. Nominal pressure in the furnace was 3 X 10~4 mm of Kg. Metallographic examination showed that the annealing treatment produced grain sizes ranging frorn 0.021 to 0.200 mm in the tantalum, and 0.060 to 0.160 mm in the alloy. Tensile bars were made by centerless grinding the annealed specimen;, and then electropolishing to remove all grinding marks. The specimens were than pulled :it 2 1/2 pct per rnin in an Instron testing machine. The tantalum specimens were tested at 77", 195", and 300°K. The alloy was tested at 300°K only. All specimens exhibited a yield-point phenomenon at all temperatures. Typical load-elongation curves at the three test temperatures are shown in Fig. 1. The lower yield stress is plotted as a function of (grain size) in Figs. 2 and 3 for tantalum and the 90 pct Ta-10 pct W alloy, respectfully. Stress-strain data are reported for sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested in compression at diffevent strain rates in the telrlperature range from 70° to 873°K. Quantitative equations are given for the stvain-rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress and the initial rate of work havdening. The properties so determined are compared with results previously reported for metals. ALTHOUGH the effects of strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of metals have been extensively investigated1,2 these effects have not been studied in detail in ionic crystals. In the only previous investigations on the effect of strain rate on the deformation of ionic crystals. Gilman and gohnston3 and Hulse and pask4 have shown that the yield stress of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide at room temperature is proportional to the ninth or tenth root of the strain rate. CRYSTAL PREPARATION Lithium fluoride, sodium chloride. and magnesium oxide single crystals were purchased from the Har-shaw Chemical Co. The compression fixture and sample preparation have been described in detail previously.5 The detectable impurities in MgO were eight parts in 105 of Fe and six parts in 105 of Si; in LiF, six parts in 105 of Mg; and in NaC1, two parts in 105 of Fe and four parts in 10&apos; of Mg. The cleaved samples measured - 0.1 in. by 0.1 in. by 0.3 in. Prior to testing all samples were annealed at -0.8 of their melting point and cooled to room tempera- ture at 50 C per hr.&apos; Samples were strained at rates (<) of 0.1, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.0002 in. per in. per min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 is a plot of the critical resolved shear stress a,. (extrapolation of slope of easy glide region to zero strain) of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested at different strain rates as a function of temperature. In all crystals at all strain rates a, decreases with increasing temperature according to an equation of the type397 where uo is a stress constant, K is a constant, and T is the absolute temperature. The points in Fig. 1 are the average of six tests. It is evident that there is a break in the log 0,- temperature plots at a characteristic temperature T,. The constant K of Eq. APROXIMATELY one third of the world&apos;s iron ore is mined in the United States; and about 80 per cent of this third is mined in the Lake Superior ore region, and about 60 per cent in Minnesota. The Lake Superior iron ore region covers a vast area in the vicinity of Lake Superior that contained in early geological times large areas of iron-bearing sediments, which today form metamorphosed iron-bearing rocks, such as jasper, chert, taconite, and slates. Concentration of the iron content chiefly through solution and resultant removal of silica produced the ore bodies we find today in rock folds as on the Menominee range, at dike or impervious wall intersections such as on the Gogebic range, and blanket-type enriched ore bodies ly¬ing on or within the ore formation, such as occur on the Mesabi and in steeply pitching ore lenses elsewhere. In many places, folding and subsequent erosion of the tops of the folded areas has resulted in steep dips in the ore formation and contained ore bodies. The upper eroded edges are mostly buried under glacial over-burden. The slightly dipping Mesabi formation is the principal exception as to steeply dipping ore bodies.

The Alaska Gastineau Mining Co.&apos;s mine is located at Perseverance, about 4 mi. east of Juheau, Alaska. Its property consists of a group of claims, the lode system traversing these claims for a distance of 11,000 ft. (3352 m.). It is shown in Fig. 1. The ore deposits occur in what is known as the Juneau gold belt. This gold belt can be traced for about 50 mi. northwest of Juneau and 40 mi. southeast. It consists of a single band, several hundred feet wide, in which stringers and veins of quartz, carrying gold, occur in a slate formation near its contact with some altered volcanic rock known as greenstone. The Perseverance orebody consists of stringer lodes, having a strike northwest and southeast, dipping about 60° to the northeast. These

The effect of strain and strain rate on the critical resolved shear stress for prismatic slip in specially oriented single magnesium crystals was determined over a range of temperatures in an effort to identify the thermally activated strain-rate controlling dislocation process. Below about 450°K prismatic slip was preceded by twinning and fracturing. Above 450°K extensive prismatic slip was obtained followed by fracturing. Neither the Peierls&apos; mechanism nor the dislocation intersection mechanism can account for the observations. The data, however, are in good agreement with the dictates of Friedel&apos;s theory for cross slip to the prismatic plane. PREVIOUS investigations on single and polycrys-talline magnesium have resulted in the identification of the mechanisms of plastic deformation summarized in Table I. The-only well-confirmed mechanisms are {0001}, (1010}, (1011) slip plus (1012) twinning. The other twinning modes were only tentatively established and additional investigations are required to further confirm their operation. As noted in Table I, slip in this hexagonal close-packed metal invariably occurs in the direction of greatest atomic density, revealing that the Burger&apos;s vector for-active slip dislocations is always given by b = a/3<1210>. Slip is easily induced on the basal plane, and recent investigations have shown that the strain-rate controlling mechanism at low temperatures is the thermally activated intersection of the glide dislocations with dislocations threading the basal plane. In contrast, very little is known about prismatic slip. It has been reported to be active at points of stress concentration in polycrystals below

Vapor pressures of silver over ternary alloys of six different copper to gold ratios have been measured by means of the Knudsen effusion technique. The data obtained in the temperature range of 1330° to 1375° have been used to estimate the integral excess free energies of the ternary alloys and the activities of copper and gold. The results compare favorably to the predictions based on the electron cell model of alloys recently formulated by the authors. THE orifice effusion method for measuring vapor pressures of materials in condensed phases was first introduced by knudsen, and has since been used extensively for the determination of thermodynamic properties of condensed phases. The basis of the measurement is the effusion, through a small orifice, of vapor in equilibrium with a condensed phase. Assuming free molecular flow into high vacuum, the vapor pressure, P (in mm Hg), of the effusing species is calculated from the following equation:&apos; where w (g) is the weight of effusing species lost during a run, t (sec) the time length of the run, A, (sq cm) the area of the effusion orifice, T ("K) the temperature at which the run is conducted, M the molecular weight of the effusing species, and k the Clausing factor, a constant that corrects for deviations from free molecular flow caused by the finite thickness of the orifice walls.17 The determination of partial and integral thermodynamic variables from vapor pressure data of ternary alloys is possible only if the vapor pressures of all but one component are negligible or can be esti-

The anisotropy of fracture and slip, that is, the brittleness and ductility of the beryllium single crystal, is characteristic also of po1ycrystalline beryllium in which the grains are oriented in a preferred manner. Beryllium with grain orientations resulting from hot working either unidirectionally or bidirectionally is ductile or brittle in directions given by the anisotropy and orientation of the grains. Textures developed from various hot-working sequences are given, and tensile results are correlated with textures. Not only texture, but fine grain size is necessary for obtaining high tensile elongation. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation are both correlated with grain diameter. Of particular interest is the case in which unusually high tensile elongations of 30 to 40 pct are obtained when basal planes are oriented to carry THE beryllium crystal (of nominal purity) is probably unique among metals with respect to its unusually acute anisotropy of slip and fracture. While extensive slip can occur on the system (1010) [ll20] starting at about 19,000 psi, the (0001) plane is particularly vulnerable to fracture at 4500 psi or less. Most of the treatises on metallurgy intimate that simultaneously with the development by the atomic physicist of a really satisfactory theory of the atom will be inaugurated a new epoch in the science of metals. Metallurgically and metaphorically, we shall dwell in the Utopia of Sir Thomas More. It is my privilege this afternoon to demonstrate that this state has not arrived. An atom is a miniature planetary system consisting of a positively charged nuclear sun about which revolve electrons each carrying the negative charge e. The charge on the nucleus is + Ze where Z is the atomic number and the number of planetary electrons in a neutral atom is equal to Z. These electrons are arranged in several groups having different binding energies. Ordinary x-ray phenomena relate to processes occurring deep within the atom, usually with electrons in the so-called K or L shells. Such electrons in the heavier atoms are so closely bound to the nucleus that the forces exerted by neighboring atoms in a solid are relatively inappreciable. For most practical x-ray investigation, the atom may be considered as in the gaseous phase completely isolated from its neighbors. The K radiation from an element in the gaseous state, in the solid or liquid phase, or even in combination with other elements in all its possible valences, is almost identical.‡ Visual and ultraviolet spectroscopy is concerned with disturbances of the most loosely bound outer or valence electrons of the atom, always in the vapor state. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Complex copper-lead-zinc ore is mined from underground workings high in the Western Cordillera of the Andes mountains about 100 km in a stralght line north of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. The Madrigal mine is situated in a steep-walled canyon into which the six operating levels "daylight". Production is from cut-and-fill stopes currently producing approximately 740 dry metric tons per day. The Santa Rosa vein, the most important producer in the district, outcrops for a distance of about 4 km, bearing N 75º W and dipping about 70º NE. In places the vein splits into two or three branches; widths of each vary between 1 and 4 m and total mineralized widths of up to over 8 m occur. Principal ore minerals are chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Ore reserve grades for the Madrigal mine average about 1.45% Cu, 2.6% Pb and 5.0% Zn, 2.9 ozAg per metric ton. INASMUCH as galena and sphalerite flotation concentrates are being produced that contain over 95 per cent galena or sphalerite, it is not unreasonable to believe that a flotation concentrate assaying at least 80 per cent of native gold can he secured provided the gold is free. As yet, little if any fundamental information has been published concerning the flotation of free gold either alone or in the presence of sulfides. So far, we are unable to make as complete a separation of gold from sulfide minerals by flotation as is possible in, the separation of one sulfide from another by this method. An introductory study of the flotation of several free gold ores has been made in our Utah laboratories. For this study three general types of gold ores were chosen, namely: (1) Quartzite containing 0.26 oz. gold per ton in which no base metals are present; (2) sulfide ore (2.04 oz. Au; 1.31 oz. AO containing pyrite as the only sulfide present and the gold free; and (3) oxidized ore (1.10 oz. Au; 0.70 oz. Ag) from an oxidized zone of the vein from which sulfide ore (No. 2) was taken; little sulfide iron was present.

The Cascade Range of Washington can be considered metallogenetically to be primarily a copper province. Structural and chemical data compiled from examination of numerous copper occurrences in the Cascades indicate a marked parallel of physical conditions for sulfide deposition. In probable order of significance, the environmental criteria are as follows: 1) adjacent or subjacent, postregional metamorphism high-level intrusive activity, most commonly in the time range from 15 million years to 30 million years; 2) transverse northeast trending structural belts which obliquely cut the northwest regional trend of the range; 3) potassium-silica wall rock alteration; most important of the alteration suite of silicates are orthoclase secondary biotite and quartz; 4) the intersection of northwest trending and northeast trending structures. The varying geologic environments in the Washington Cascades present a complex setting for the sulfide deposits. The North Cascades are comprised of predominantly pre-Tertiary metamorphic rocks invaded by Tertiary calcalkaline intrustive rocks. The Central Cascades, lying south of the North Cascades, exhibit a younger, higher level geologic environment comprised of predominantly early to middle Tertiary volcanic rocks and subordinate sedimentary rocks which are intruded by Tertiary calc-alkaline igneous rocks. Although the Tertiary Cascade intrusions are dominantly quartz dioritic, copper mineralization is commonly found in rocks of quartz monzonite to granite composition. These acid rocks appear to be the product of late stage magmatic K alteration of the original quartz diorites. Sulfide concentrations are considered to be in part dependent on the degree of K-silicate activity and the intensity of transverse structural deformation.

IN examining steel under the microscope, one is constantly confronted with structures that are difficult to interpret. Recently, in a collection of samples for exhibition purposes, the writer found apiece of open-hearth runner metal, 2 in. (50 mm.) in diameter, that had been fractured for use as a sample of cast-steel structure. On polishing and etching a section for the purpose of photographing a field to typify the microstructure of steel in the "as cast" condition, a variety of structures was found (Fig. 1) so arranged as to arouse interest at once. For a distance of about 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) from the skin of the runner, normal ingot structure was found (Fig. 2); this was followed by a zone, about 0.215 in. (5.5 mm.) wide, of considerably lower carbon content in which occurred a most pronounced Widmannstättian structure (Fig. 3); from this point on to the center of the runner, the metal was again of normal ingot structure (Fig. 4). The estimated production of petroleum in the Dominion of Canada for 1931 was 1,582,000 bbl., an increase of 60,000 bbl. over 1930. Nearly all of the production came from Alberta, with a small quantity from Ontario, and a very minor amount reported from New Brunswick. At the beginning of 1931 it was hoped, and predicted, that a substantial increase in production would be shown for that year, but such was not the case, since Alberta did not show the anticipated gain. The production from Ontario and New Brunswick has not varied more than a few thousand barrels during the past 10 years and aggregated 124,000 bbl. in 1930, with 126,600 bbl. estimated for 1931. Unless new fields are discovered, production in 1932 will decline, with Ontario and New Brunswick showing little change and Alberta declining appreciably. Canadian production by provinces during the past 10 years is given in Table 1. Furnished by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. a Barrels of 35 Imperial gallons or 42 U. The discovery of this asphaltum was made by S. H. Gilson, of Salt Lake, and since then the material has borne the local name of Gilsonite. So far as I have been able to ascertain, however, the first published notice of this discovery was made by Prof. W. P. Blake in the Engineering arid Mining Journal, of December 26, 1885, where he names the new mineral Uintahite, from the place of its discovery, the Uintah Mountains in eastern Utah. The priority of publication and the geographical fitness of the name will probably secure its acceptance by mineralogists.* The following is Prof. Blake&apos;s article. In the month of September last, a sample of peculiar asphalt was received for examination, and recently when in Provo, Utah, I had the opportunity of seeing a considerable quantity brought in from the Uintah Mountains. It is obtained in masses several inches in diameter, and apparently free from mechanically disseminated impurities. It breaks with a conchoidal fracture, is very brittle, and is readily reduced to powder in a mortar. Hardness, 2 to 25. Gravity, 1.065 to 1.070. Color, black, brilliant, and lustrous; streak and powder, a rich brown. It is a non-conductor of electricity, and is electrically excited by friction.

JAMES DOUGLAS Dr. James Douglas, twice President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and one of its principal benefactors, died in New York on June 25, 1918, at the age of 81 years. After a life of extraordinary activity, failure of his health compelled him to retire about 2 or 3 years ago, and in view of his advanced years his death was not unexpected. His funeral was held at the Church of the Mediator, on June 26, and was attended by representatives of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and of the Canadian Mining Institute. His body was then taken to Quebec for burial in the family plot. An extended notice of Dr. Douglas, prepared by Dr. R. W. Raymond, will be presented in the September issue of the Bulletin. LEWIS NEWTON BAILEY Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., April 30, 1918, at. the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, .Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers; and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character.
