INTRODUCTION More than 97% of the total uranium production of the United States comes from sedimentary deposits (1). These sandstone deposits were formed by reduction of migrating uranium-bearing solutions from volcanic silicate rock sources. Such deposits occur in two major forms, either as relatively flat, lens-like deposits or as crescent- shaped roll front deposits. The lens-like deposits are found as discrete masses enclosed in reduced sandstone which is generally surrounded by oxidized sandstone. The roll front deposits are found along crescent-shaped interfaces between reduced and oxidized sands tone (2). In-situ mining of selected sedimentary deposits has proven to be a viable method of extraction and competitive with conventional mining for relatively deep low-grade ores (2). In in-situ leaching, uranium is recovered by drilling injection and collection wells in the ore body, pumping a suitable lixiviant to dissolve the mineral, extracting uranium from the pregnant solution by ion exchange, and finally regenerating and recycling the lixiviant. Even though there is increasing interest and practice in developing the in-situ technique for obtaining uranium values from deeper, lower-grade reserves, there is a lack of knowledge of the basic leaching kinetics and combined transport processes. In-situ leaching operations, in general, appear attractive for the following three general types of deposits (2): (1) low-grade surface dumps or deposits which lie above the natural water table,

Discussion of the paper of Charles R. Keyes, Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 19, January, 1908, pp. 1 to 31. BERNARD MACDONALD, Guanajuato, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Keyes's paper is very interesting to me because of my personal experience with the development of the ore-deposits of Lake Valley. Seeing that many of the important facts connected with the early history of the development of these mines are either now unknown, or have become more or less distorted, and thinking that it would be interesting as well as valuable to have these recorded as a historical supplement to Mr. Keyes's elaborate paper, I present the following narrative: In February, 1881, soon after the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fé railroad made connection with the Southern Pacific at Denting, N. M., the Lake Valley properties were brought to the attention of New York and Philadelphia capitalists by John A. Miller, of Silver City, N. M. At that time silver was $1.10 all ounce and silver-mining was very attractive. Vast fortunes were being made in Leadville and other Colorado camps, and Tombstone was pouring out its millions. Lake Valley, like all' other mining-camps in their early history, had its drawbacks, but the railroad, then passing within 14 miles of it, mitigated many of these. The camp lay in the foot-hills of the Black range, in which the Apaches had their stronghold, and raided, when it suited their convenience, the surrounding country, killing the prospectors and pioneer settlers and stealing their cattle. This band of Indians was joined by the outlaws and desperadoes from the frontiers of Texas, Arizona, and Mexico, who collectively defied the United States soldiers, restrained, as the latter were, by the mollycoddles from the East. SHG zinc was extruded in the temperature range 110" to 350°C and the strain rate range 0.05 to 5 sec-1 The strain rate/flow stress/temperature results were analyzed using a power sinh stress relationship. When temperature changes due to the heat of deformation and to heat losses are neglected, the exponent of the sinh function of the stress is 5.6, and the apparent activation energy of deformation is 28 kcal per mole. When these changes are taken into account, the exponent decreases to 4.7 and the activation energy to 23 + 2 kcal per mole. The corrected stress exponent and activation energy are in very good agreement with published values obtained from creep experiments, and suggest that the hot extrusion of zinc is controlled by a mechanism involving self-diffusion. When the extrusion and creep data are compared using a Zener-Hollomon parameter and either a sinh or an exponential stress term, an appreciable offset is observed, which may be due to the difference in impurity content. For a given set of extrusion conditions the ram speed, maximum pressure, and initial temperature can also be correlated using a Zener-Hollomon parameter and a sinh pressure term. THE deformation of metals at temperatures over about one-half the absolute melting temperature has been extensively studied at creep strain rates. By contrast, relatively little work has been carried out on the behavior of metals at hot working strain rates. Most of the latter investigations have been performed using simulative methods, such as hot torsion and hot compression, in which the friction conditions and temperature rise during deformation may differ appreciably from those existing under industrial conditions. Recently, however, Wong and Jonas1 used a scaled-down industrial process to determine the stress and temperature dependence of the strain rate during the extrusion of aluminum. In such tests, the effects of friction and adiabatic heating are closer to those produced in industrial operations. Also, with regard to the testing of materials of limited ductility such as zinc, hot compression and hot torsion do not permit the attainment of true strains as large as the deformations usually applied commercially. The present study was undertaken to investigate the extrusion behavior of Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The detailed objectives were: 1) to establish the stress and temperature dependence of the strain rate with and without a consideration of adiabatic heating, 2) to study the pressure and temperature dependence of the ram speed, and 3) to investigate the microstruc- tural changes occurring during the deformation. The last aspect of the investigation will be covered in a separate paper. The treatment described below differs from that of Wong and Jonas in that the adiabatic temperature rise during deformation is taken into account, and the calculation of the mean equivalent strain rate is based on the redundant as well as on the homogeneous work. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rods from two shipments of continuously cast SHG zinc* were used in the investigation. The composition *Supplied by courtesy of Cominco Ltd. range of the impurities present, as given by the supplier, was: Pb: 0.0013 to 0.0023 pct, Fe: 0.001 pct max Cd: 0.0001 to 0.0006 pct, Cu: 0.0002 to 0.0005 pct, Ti: 0.0001 pct max; thus, by balance, zinc valued from 99.9963 to 99.9966 pct. The as-received rods were machined into billets having a nominal diameter of 1.56 in. and a nominal length of 1½ in.; longer billets up to 4 in. in length, were also used to investigate special aspects. The as-machined rods were annealed at 400°C for 24 hr and slowly cooled. This treatment produced a columnar grain structure, with a grain size of about $ by 2½ cm which was appreciably larger than the as-cast one. A 150-ton, direct extrusion, vertical press was used. Ram displacement and force were recorded continuously against time. A constant flow control valve permitted the maintenance of a range of preselected ram speeds up to in. per sec. The selected speed was held constant, irrespective of the required force, as long as the load developed was below the maximum available. Strain gages were used to determine the force; the gages were calibrated before and after each testing period with a 200,000-lb capacity load cell. Further details of the experimental equipment can be found in Ref. 2. The billets were preheated for 90 min in the extrusion container, which was well insulated so as to minimize temperature gradients. This period was sufficient for the billet to reach a uniform temperature at all temperatures between 110" and 350°C. A square-shoulder die having a 0.290-in. diam central hole was used. The extrusion ratio was 30 to 1. This is equivalent to a reduction in area of 96.7 pct, an elongation of 2900 pct, and a true strain of 3.4. The ram speed was varied over two orders of magnitude from 0.0027 to 0.26 in. per sec. The ram was water-cooled during most of the tests, although some experiments were conducted with a preheated, uncooled ram. THIS meeting was held at the home of the Institute in the United Engineering Society Building, 29. West 39th St., New York, N. Y., Feb. 18 to 21, 1908. The first session, held in the large auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, was called to order at 8 p.m. by Prof. Henry M. Howe, Past-President of the Institute, who welcomed the members and guests in a few cordial and well-chosen remarks. The following papers, accompanied by lantern-illustrations, were presented in oral abstract by their authors Swedenborg and Humboldt, by R. W. Raymond, New York, N. Y. Electric Power in Steel Mills, by David B. Rushmore and Karl A. Pauly, Syracuse, N. Y. At the close of the session, an informal reception in the offices of the Institute was tendered to members and guests. The second session, held in Assembly Room No. 1 in the same building, Wednesday, Feb. 19, was called to order at 10 a.m. by Prof. Robert H. Richards, Past-President of the Institute. Before proceeding with the papers on iron and steel, which were scheduled for presentation at this session, Mr. F. E. Junge, a representative of the gas-engine and electric motor industry of Berlin, Germany, gave a short oral discussion of the paper by Mr. Rushmore and Mr. Pauly, Electric Power in Steel Mills. Printed copies of the paper, Uniform Nomenclature of Iron and Steel, were distributed among the members and guests present, and the request was made for a later discussion of this important subject by letter. This paper constitutes the Report of Committee No. 24, of the International Association for Testing Materials, which was presented at the Brussels Congress in 1906. It is suggested that the binary alloy systems of transition metals may be classified into groups according to "excess energy"E. For systems with positive ?E, the Laves phase, the TiNi3-, the TiCu3- and the Cudu-type rich in the smaller atom and the TizNi-type rich in the larger atom may exist. For systems with negative ?E and composed of two components of different crystal structures, the X, the Cr3O and the phase may exist on the side of the phase digrattz rich in the component with the higher "solubility factor" value am! the Cudu-type and the disordered hcp phase on the other side; if the crystal structure of two components is the same, the Cudu-type may exist on both sides. For systems with weakly positive ?E and cotnposed of different crystal structures, the u phase and the MgCd3-type may replace the Laves phase and the other types; the X, the Cr3O and the a phase may also exist. Finally, the equirnolar compounds of the CuAu- and the CsC1-type may exist irrespective of the sign of ?E. THERE are many factors which play a major role in the formation of binary intermediate phases in alloys, such as the crystal structure, the electronic structure, the atomic size and the electrochemical factor. To find the simultaneous effects of all these factors on the formation of intermediate phases of every metal would be a difficult task, especially because only a small fraction of experimental facts necessary for the complete formulation is known at present. Thus the past surveys of intermediate phases have been usually confined to few metals, several types of intermediate phases and some but not all controlling factors. In a previous paper1 the idea of "solubility factor" of metals was introduced. Although the suggested values are tentative and empirical, the formation of a continuous series of solid solutions in metals could be correlated with the interplay among the atomic size factor, the solubility factor and the crystal structure factor. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate qualitatively the interplay of these factors in the formation of binary intermediate phases among transition metals. FACTORS CONSIDERED The Crystal Structure Factor. With rare earths excluded, the transition metals are classified into three common crystal structures listed in Table I. There is arbitrariness in the present classification of several allotropic elements. INTEREST in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator's viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. PLANT AT BUNKER HILL The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a I ¼ in. screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4 ½ -mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen undersize, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass ½ in. and joins the undersize in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). [ ] More complete descriptions of the H. H. process and Bunker Hill sink-float plant are given in several recent articles, listed at the end of the paper. PREPARATION OF MEDIUM AT BUNKER HILL New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days. A small portion of the current mill flotation concentrate is diverted from the lead cleaner cells to a I-in. vertical sand pump and pumped to a two-cell 36-in. Agitair flotation machine, where NaCn and ZnSO4 are added and the grade of concentrate is improved as shown in Table 2. Tailing from this operation is returned by gravity

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic location or seam characteristics modem raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Underground preparation involves choosing those portions of the bed which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving (1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another the (1) petrography of the coal in the bed does not re- main uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content and petrography are of considerable interest and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal. The prospecting and evaluation of any area containing one or more salable coal beds by means of channel samples taken from outcrop openings and/or from diamond-drill cores can yield valuable data on coal characteristics. By correlating the data developed from distinct petrographic sections of channel and/or drill core samples, the quality of the bed according to stratification will be evident. The principal importance of your engineering education to date has been in teaching you how to think and how through books to have ready access to the accumulated experience of previous generations, as well as the current experience of the day. You should by now have acquired something of the engineering point of view, the open skeptical mind. the power to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions, form theories and test these by further experiment, and weigh the inherent probability of conclusions drawn by others. I am asking you today to consider certain facts and the conclusions I am drawing from those facts.

The OPEC oil embargo and the subsequent higher prices for oil have drawn public attention to the critical problems associated with security of supply of oil and other key industrial materials, especially nonfuel minerals. This concern has stimulated the interest of decisionmakers in analyzing policy options to cope with the emergency situations resulting from a sudden foreign- induced supply interruption or a cartel price increase. Several policy options are available to counteract foreign-initiated embargoes or cartel price actions. The type of response will differ depending on the commodity action intiated. A mathematical model that measures the impact of foreign-induced commodity actions on the domestic economy is formulated. The paper also presents a computer method that can be used to determine the optimum policy response to counteract such actions.

A scale based on existing data for the mutual solid solubilities of metals in binary systems has been compiled. This scale is useful for estimating the relative magnitude of two solubilities, provided that these two metals do not form a continuous series of solid solutions. In his classic work on the theory of metallic solid solutions, Hume-Rothery proposed that, other things being equal, a metal of lower valency should be regarded as more likely to dissolve one of higher valency than vice versa. He called this the "relative valency effect". Later he found that the application of this general principle was limited to the three univalent metals: copper, silver, and gold. In dealing with alloys of these metals with metals of higher valency, Hume-Rothery stated, it is usually found that the solid solution of the univalent metal is of the greater extent.&apos; The question of whether there is a systematic trend in comparing the relative magnitude of mutual solubilities, if valency is not considered a criterion, naturally arises. The present paper proposes a "mutual solid solubility" scale on an empirical basis. The order of its arrangement is determined by the relative magnitude of mutual solid solubilities. Some applications of and inferences from this scale are given. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF THE SCALE An extensive survey of over 400 binary phase diagrams shows that, with certain exceptions and within certain limitations, metals can be arranged in the following order: Na Zn Cd Ga Bi Ge Sb As Hg Sn Si Mg Li Ba In Tl Pb Al Ca Be Mn Cr Re W Mo Cu V Ta Fe Ru Cb Co Ti Hf Ni Os Zr Ir Pt Au U Rh Ce Pd Ag Th so that a metal higher on the scale tends to have a higher solubility in a metal lower on the scale than vice versa. some experimental solubility data are given in Table I. These data, unless otherwise specified, are taken from Hansen and Anderko.6 Throughout this paper, the term "solubility of A in B" is taken to mean the maximum solid solubility of A in B in atomic percent, while the maximum solid solubility of B in A in atomic percent is called "reciprocal solubility". The exceptions found in the above-mentioned survey are: Al-Ag system, 20.34 at. pct Al in Ag, 23.8 Ag in Al; Mg-Pb system, 5.9 Mg in Pb, 7.75 Pb in Mg; As-Sn system, vanishingly small amount of As in Sn, a large As primary solid solution; Cd-Hg system, Cd in Hg <Hg in Cd; Mg-T1 system, 5(?) Mg in ßT1, 15.4 T1 in Mg; W-Ti system, -21 W in ßTi, -25 Ti in W; Zr-Ag system, probably small amount of Zr in Ag, 20 Ag in ßZr.7 Considering the large number of examples, the exceptions are few. It is remarkable that metals may be so arranged without considering other factors such as size, crystal structure, electronic structure, and so forth. A limitation to the use of the scale is the fact that it cannot be tested for two metals forming a continuous series of solid solutions. A graphical technique by which the operating points for a two-fan ventilation system can be represented as the intersection of the modified fan curves is described. In constructing the diagram, the air quantities associated with the fans are considered to be independent variables and used as the axes of a rectangular coordinate system. The diagram may include, in addition to the modified fan curves, contour lines for resistances, pressures, and air powers. Procedures for drawing the diagram are discussed and illustrated with an example of the ventilation system.

Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), Section 516 (b), requires the underground coal mining operator to "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence cawing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable we of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology wed requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner.. . ." Congress also directed the Secretary of the Interior to promulgate regulations to implement the law. As a result, the control of subsidence from underground coal mining to minimize surface damage has become the mandate of a federal law. This paper discusses the mechanics of subsidence and the effects of subsidence on ground features. This paper also summarizes some measures used to minimize the possibility of damage to structures as a result of subsidence due to underground coal mining.

ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,&apos; gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on&apos; by individuals 01&apos; small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

In 1860, eight out of 55 such coal-oil companies in the United States had plants located in Pennsylvania.&apos; Of these, the Lucesco Works, costing $120,000, situated near Kiskiminetas Junction, was the largest operating in the country. It was equipped with 10 revolving 2.5-ton retorts and 16 stills for rectifying the oil, each holding 2000 gal. The total output of crude oil was almost 6000 gal. per day.2 The discovery of an abundant supply of natural petroleum by the Drake and other wells stopped the distillation of coal oil in America. Most of the smaller plants were closed and others were converted into petroleum refineries. At present, in spite of the temporary over-production of petroleum, the coal and oil-shale carbonization industries are again attracting the attention of far-sighted oil companies who realize that the gradual exhaustion of the American petrol-

The pllnse diagvam for the NaF-AlF3 system was used to calcutate an ionic model for the NaF-AlF3 system. Assuming an ideal solution,a series of simultaneous equations expressing equilibria be-tween solid and liquid phases at the euleclic, perilec-tic, and melting points were solved for the activities of the ionic species, the dissociation constants, and the entropies and heats of fusion. The calculations suggest the existence of A13F1415 ions in addition to the F-1+AlF6-3 , and AlF4-4 ions previously proposed by others. The calculaled valnes give better agreement with vapor pressures than the previous model without Al3Fl14-5. Additional possible vefinements of the model are proposed. CRYOSCOPIC1 investigations and density data2 for the NaF-A1F3 system have previously been used to study the dissociation mechanism of Na3A1F6 and to derive equilibrium constants for its dissociation to NaF and NaAlF,. Depending primarily on the heat of fusion assumed for cryolite, the dissociation constants ranged between 0.02 and 0.18 from cryoscopic studies, and from 0.09 at 1273°K to 0.16 at 1363°K from density data. In most cases the values were unable to reproduce satisfactorily the experimental liquidus lines very far on the A1F3 side of the Na3A1Fe composition. This suggested the existence of at least one other ionized compound in the melt besides NaA1F4 in the Na3A1F6-A1F3 side of the system. This is assumed to be liquid Na&13F14 (chiolite), which is already established as a stable solid in phase studies of this system. MODEL FOR THE MELT The melt is assumed to be an ideal solution with ion activities equal to anion fractions. The only cation in the model is sodium so that Temkin and simple anionic activities are identical. Although the compounds are completely ionized to Na&apos; and the respective anion in the melt, molecular rather than ionic notation is used throughout this work. The Na3A1Fe is assumed to dissociate to NaA1F4 and NaF as in the former model, and Na&13F14 to dissociate to Na3A1Fe and NaA1F4. Other valid dissociation equilibria can be written involving these four compounds, but all of these can be obtained by combinations of the two described dissociation reactions and, thus, are automatically considered in these calculations. The model allows for no free AlF3 so that compositions for NAIF3 > 0.5 (mole fraction A1F3 on the NaF-A1F3 basis) cannot be treated. The question of the existence of free AlF3 in the melt will be discussed again later. The constants in the model were evaluated from points along the entire known liquidus line of the NaF-A1F3 system. Previous work employed only the liquidus line or densi- ties near the Na3A1F, composition. The liquidus line compositions used in the solution of the model are from unpublished work by Mr. P. A. Foster, Jr., for compositions between the Na3A1F6 melting point and the Na&13F14-A1F3 eutectic, and from the published works of Grjotheim,1 Phillips,3 and Foster4 for the remainder of the system. The relationships used in solving for the desired dissociation constants and heats and entropies of fusion are listed in Table I, and the points along the liquidus line at which each apply are indicated to the right of the relationships. The mole fractions of each of the separate species in the melt are symbolized by N. Relationships [I] and [2] are the respective dissocia-ation constants, Kl and K2, of Na3AIF6 and Na5A13F14 for this model. For simplicity, these constants will be assumed to be independent of temperature. Relationship [3] follows from the assumption of the ideal solution. The expression relating the values of N to the experimental values of NAIf3, is given in Relationship (41. Relationships [5], [6], and [7] each state the equilibrium between a compound in the melt and its pure solid phase for the portion of the liquidus lines where it precipitates. The heats of melting, AH,, and entropies of melting, AS,, used in [5], [6], and [7] are assumed to be independent of temperature. The compositions and temperatures of all five invariant points (two melting points, two eutectics, and one peritectic) along the liquidus lines from NAIF3 = 0 to NAIF3 = 0.5 were employed in the solution. The eutectic and peritectic compositions were particularly useful because each of these is involved in one more equation than other points along the liquidus lines and thus reduces the number of points required to solve for the constants. Also, their use assures that the inflection points in the derived liquidus line will correspond exactly with those on the experimental liquidus line. The total number of equations is 5k1 — 1, where n is the number of experimental composition points used. The number of unknowns is 4n + 5 (4n- 3 values of N, 3 values each of AH, and AS,, and 2 values of K). Thus, six points must be used in the solution to obtain an equal number of equations and unknowns. The one additional required experimental composition was taken on the liquidus line between the Na3A1Fe melting point and the Na3A1F6-Na5A13F14 peritectic. Previous work indicated this was a difficult portion of the curve to fit. The temperature used for the point was 1161°K, the same as for the NaF-Na3A1Fe eutectic. This choice of temperature gave two points with identical NNa3AIF6 values which simplifies the algebraic solution. The second point at this temperature is denoted 1161°&apos;K. PROCEDURE FOR SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS Values were assumed for NNa,AIF and NNaF at the NaF-Na3A1F6 eutectic at 1161°k. By an iterative procedure, the corresponding values for NNa5A13F14 and NNaAlF4 at 1161°K were determined from 131 and 141. A value was assumed for NNaAlF4 at 1161°&apos;K and

WHAT is the likelihood if any-that a real gold mining industry will be developed in the southern Appalachian region? Has the increase in the dollar value of gold from $20.67 to $35 per ounce potency to turn the trick? Suppose it be assumed that the price of gold will, at worst, not recede, and that the cost of digging ore and treating it of which the average level of commodity prices and wages is a fair index-will, at most, not exceed that prevailing in 1926. One may or may not accept these as reasonable assumptions; but one must arbitrarily remove some of the potential variables if one is to get anywhere on a problem like this. As a matter of fact, this article is not going to venture a conclusive answer to the question that has been posed; but it will endeavor to present some of the factors that have a bearing on the problem. The writer spent ten days visiting a dozen properties in Virginia and the Carolinas early in April, 1935, and in doing so got a first-hand slant on mining conditions in the domain of King Cotton.

Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (water box) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 % reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

Interest in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator&apos;s viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. Plant at Bunker Hill The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a 1¼ in, screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4½-mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen under-size, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass 36 in. and joins the under-size in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). More complete descriptions of the H. H. process and Bunker Hill sink-float plant are given in several recent articles, listed at the end of the paper. Preparation OF Medium at Bunker Hill New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days.
