The high- and low-cycle fatigue poperties of MAR-M200 directionally -solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms were determined at 1400" and 1700°F. These results were compared with the corresponding properties of conventionally -cast MAR-M200. The low-cycle fatigue lives of the columnar-grained and single crystal materials were similar at both temperatures and were one to two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventionally-cast material. The variations in the fatigue lives among the three forms of MAR-M200 were related to the more rapid rate of intergranular muck propagation compared to that of transgranular propagation. In conventionally-cast MAR-M200, cracks were initiated in grain boundaries and crack popagation occurred rapidly along an almost continuous grain boundary path. In the columnar-grained material, crack initiation occurred on short transverse segments of grain boundaries, but crack propagation was transgranular. The fatigue lives of columnar-grained and single crystal materials were approximately the same because most of the life in both materials was spent in trans-granular propagation. For the directionally -solidified materials, the number of cycles to failure, Nf, can be related to the total strain range, , by: heT = K where n and K are 0.16 and 0.044 at 1400'F and 0.29and 0.098 at 1700, respectively. In addition to intergranular crack initiation in the columnar-grained material, initiation also occurred at we-cracked MC carbides and micropores in both directionally-solidified materials. At 1400°F, fatigue life was reduced with increasing MC carbide size, but at 1700 there was no effect of carbide size. THE creep and stress-rupture properties of conventionally-cast nickel-base superalloys can be greatly improved by directional solidification into either single crystal or columnar-grained forms. The improvement in properties results from a reduction in intergranular cavitation and crack growth in the columnar-grained materials and the complete absence of this fracture mode in the single crystals. This paper describes the effect of grain boundaries on the elevated temperature fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200. The effect of cycling frequency on cracking arid fatigue life and the role of MC carbides and micropores on crack initiation are also emphasized. The fatigue properties of columnar-grained and single crystal MAR-M200 at room tem- perature,4,5 and the change in the mode of fatigue crack propagation with temperature6 have recently been described. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used in this study was the nickel-base superalloy MAR-M200, directionally-solidified into columnar-grained and single crystal forms. The columnar grains were approximately 0.5 mm in diam. The nominal composition of these materials in wt pct was 0.15C, 9Cr, 12.5W, loco, 5A1. 2Ti, lCb, 0.05Zr. 0.015B, bal Ni. They were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr. which resulted in 0.2 pct offset yield stresses of 150,000? 144,000, and 95,000 psi at room temperature? 1400°, and 1700°F, respectively. The corresponding elastic moduli parallel to the testing direction were 19.2. 15.0, and 12.5 x 106 psi, respectively. Specimen design, testing procedures and alloy mi-crostructure have been described previously and will only be summarized here. Following the 1600°F aging treatment. MAR-M200 contains an ordered, cuboidal, y' precipitate 0.3 1 on edge, which is coherent with the 1 matrix. The y' precipitate is quite stable; even after testing at 1700°F. the precipitate is only slightly enlarged and its corners somewhat rounded. The alloy also contains a small volume fraction of micropores, and MC carbides. some of which contain preexisting cracks5 formed during casting. These cracks are always parallel to the long dimension of the carbide. Measurement of MC carbide size has been described previously.5 Axial fatigue tests were conducted in air over a wide range of strain amplitudes in both the high - and low-cycle fatigue regions, with specimen lives varying from about 10' to 10' cycles. Low-cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were strain-controlled with strain varied between zero and a maximum tensile value at a frequency of about 2 cpm. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) tests were stress-controlled with the stress varied between 5000 psi and a maximum tensile value less than the yield stress at a frequency of either 10 cps or 0.033 cps (2 cpm). The temperature in the gage section was controlled to 52°F. Specimen axes were within 5 deg of the [001] growth axis of the single crystals and the common [001 ] growth axis of the columnar-grained material. Specimen gage sections were electro polished prior to testing. After the standard heat treatment, three specimens were coated with a typical aluminide coating applied as a slurry. An additional specimen was given the coating heat treatment without actually being coated. In all cases: specimens were reaged at 1600°F for 32 hr after receiving the coating heat treatment at 1975'F for 4 hr.

The tensi1e properties of Ferrovac iron have been studied from 4° to 300°K. The stress required for macroscopic yielding was found to he constant below approximately 50°K. The effect of mechanical twinning on this low -temperature stress plateau was investigated. The onset of twinning occurs in this iron between 130° and 150°K and depending on its previous thermal history the twinning-stress curue may drop below or remain above the vield-stress curves as the temperature is lowered. Twinning has been shown to initiate slip in quenclzed iron at low temperatures. In no instances, however, did the onset of twinning alter the continuity of the yield stress -tempwature curve. Our data shows that carbon inhibits twinning and slip at low tem-peratures. This observation nay be used to explain the ductile-to-brittle transition in iron. The effect of fast neutron irradiation on yielding and embrittlement in iron and Fe-C alloys is offered as supporting evidence for this viewpoint. THE mode of yielding in iron at low temperatures was studied in an attempt to find an expression based on a single mechanism to describe the thermal dependence of the yield stress of iron. There are two types of inflections observed in the variation of the yield stress with temperature in iron and Fe-C alloys. The first is associated with ductile behavior and consists of a region extending 50" to 100°K above absolute zero in which the yield stress is independent of temperature. The second is observed in more brittle materials such as Fe-C alloys and irradiated iron and consists of an abrupt discontinuity in the yield curve as the temperature is lowered through a ductile-to-brittle transition point. The temperature dependence of the yield stress for iron with four grain diameters as found in this study is shown in Fig. 1. To varying degrees all the curves appear to flatten or approach an asymptotic value as the temperature is lowered below 50°K. Several other investigators1,2 have observed a plateau in the yield stress of iron and steel at low temperatures and in 1956 Louat3 presented a theory which contained an explanation for this behavior. In a subsequent exchange with Erickson and Low4'5 who attributed the plateau to the onset of mechanical twinning Louat8 showed that twinning first occurs in iron and steel tested in tension at temperatures as high as 140°K which is well above the observed plateau in yield stress. Furthermore he pointed out that both twinning and slip are basically dislocation processes and that with modified parameters his original theory still applied when deformation is initiated by twinning. Variables which affect the ductile-to-brittle transition in iron are test temperature, strain rate, composition and grain size.7 LOW,8 Hahn et al.,9 and Hull10 have provided evidence which links brittle fracture at a given temperature with the specimen grain size and the onset of twinning. In fact, Hull equates the brittle fracture stress to the twinning stress. On the other hand brittle fracture has been observed in the absence of twinning and priestnerl1 has given a fracture criterion which is valid whether or not fracture is preceded by extensive twinning. The data presented here clarify the role of twinning in the low-temperature deformation of iron. UNDER the auspices of the Geophysical Committee of Michigan College of Mining and Technology, an investigation was made in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to obtain geophysical data" related to the regional subsurface geology in the area covered by Paleozoic sediments. The area surveyed includes that portion of the Upper Peninsula which lies between R18W to R26W and T41N and T49N, covering approximately 1300 square miles. On the index map, Fig. 1, it is represented by the cross-hatched zone west of Munising. Four of the five sites of detailed investigation are indicated by the letters A, B, C, and D. A detailed gravity and magnetic survey had previously been conducted by J. G. Wilsonz near Perkins, 8 miles north of Rapid River, on a local anomalous area. Results of his work, which showed a large positive magnetic anomaly associated with a gravity anomaly, aroused interest in the possible economic significance of the formations underlying the Paleozoic sediments in this part of the Upper Peninsula. Early in the 1900's the Michigan Geological Survey, as well as many private companies, had done a considerable amount of dip needle work near the southwest corner of the area discussed in this paper. Most of the information available to the writer was obtained from indicated magnetic anomalies on the geological map of the northern peninsula of Michigan. Results of the geophysical activities of mining companies in the vicinity of the Marquette range and Gwinn district were unavailable to the author. Physiography and Geography: The region under consideration has low to moderate relief. About half the area is comprised of swampy lowlands, and because of the swamps and forests much of the land is almost inaccessible. The major drainage system is dendritic, with streams flowing into Lake Michigan on the south and Lake Superior on the north. The general geology, shown in Fig. 2, indicates an overlay of Paleozoic sediments on pre-Cambrian formations along a line running approximately south from Marquette (not shown on the geological map). Actual contact between pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic sediments is not known because most of the area is covered with glacial till, and outcrops are very scarce. Exposures of the Paleozoic sediments show that these beds in the northern areas dip gently under Lake Superior and that in the southern areas they 'dip gently to the southeast. Outcroppings of the pre-Cambrian formations occur primarily to the west of the surveyed area except in the northwest corner where the Laurentian series outcrop as far east as the Gwinn district and also in T46N, R24W. Instrumentation: Gravity measurements were made with the Worden portable gravity meter. Since this was chiefly a reconnaissance regional survey, both the large and small dials were used. The instrument used had a constant of 0.0035 milligals per scale division, a working range of about 25 milligals.

LECTURE, it appears, is a discourse that is supposed to be instructive. I am quite sure that you will derive no instruction from what I have to say. I will be satisfied if my remarks provoke thought along one or two mental paths that have not been traveled so fre¬quently as to be devoid of interest. I have no particular message apropos of professional engineers or professional engineering, and any conclusions that I may seem to reach will be purely tentative and incidental. Probably at times you have wondered, in a casual way at least, why so many people who are not, never have been, and never will be engineers, want to use the title. For example, I recently received a communication from a life insurance broker or salesman, whose chaste letterhead bore the legend "Estate Engineer." He was perfectly serious about it, as is also the expert accountant who assumes the imposing name of cost-analysis engineer. Dozens of equally amazing titles might be cited. Then there is that class of individuals who have been engineers, in the true sense of the word; who have gone into some other kind of occupation; but who cling tenaciously to the name engineer, usually prefixing some word or other which at once gives them away by telling what their work really is. For example, we have such pseudomorphs as the management engineer, and the sales engineer. It is quite evident that engineer is a word to conjure with. Evidently both the man who appro¬priates the designation without any justification and the ex-engineer who persists in calling himself an engineer even after he has abandoned engineer-

FOR a number of years, the Department of Petroleum Economics of The Chase National Bank has been conducting a study of the capital employed in the petroleum industry. The technique followed is that of combining and summarizing the available financial and operating data for a group of thirty representative oil companies, doing about two thirds of the domestic business of the entire industry. This paper presents the results of the findings for the year 1943, and supplements the survey, "Sources, Disposition, and Characteristics of the Capital Employed by Thirty Oil Companies During the Nine-Year Period, 1934-1942," presented before the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on Feb. 24, 1944, and also published as a pamphlet by The Chase National Bank.

Prior tests by Dorn, where the strain rate in a tensile test was suddenly changed, have shown a small, but definite rate-history effect to exist. If this effect is neglected in the calculation of creep behavior from tensile results, an error should occur. This paper shows that this error is smaller than experimental scattering, and may be neglected. DORN1 has found a small but definite rate-history effect in the aluminum alloy 250 at liquid-nitrogen temperature using tensile tests with an abrupt rate change. Deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on single crystals of magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium. Single crystals oriented to suppress shear on the easily activated basal slip systems were deformed by plane-strain compression. Compression along the C axis was accommodated by {1011} banding. Compression perpendicular to the unconstrained c axis activated {1012} twinning, and, after virtually complete twinning, deformation continued by {1011) banding in the twinned material. Compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis was accommodated by the simultaneous operation of (1012) twinning against the constraint and (1011 ) banding. Although this orientation was favorable for {1010)(1210) prism and {1011}(1~10) pyramidal slip, these modes were not observed in pure magnesium or in Mg-0.5 pct Th. However, {10i0)(1~10) prism slip was observed in crystals of Mg-4 pct Li during compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis. Fracture in all materials occurred parallel to (1124) or {l~il) depending on the orientation and composition of the specimen. THE mechanical behavior of the hcp metals is strongly anisotropic. Although several slip systems have been reported the slip is cpmmonly in the directions of closest packing, the (1210),' and this does not produce strains parallel to the c axis. Hence the inherent anisotropy. The deformation mode most easily activated in magnesium at room temperature is (0001)(1210)- basal slip. Also {1010}(1~10) prism slip and {1011)(1210) pyramidal slip have been reported, primarily at elevated temperatures.2"4 However, at room temperature the shear stresses to activate the prism and pyramidal modes are roughly a hundredfold greater than that required for basal slip.'j4 Thus prism and pyramidal slip may be expected only under special conditions of loading. Strains normal to the basal plane can be produced by twinning, however. Many twinning modes have been reported for magnesium,' with (1012) twinning the most common and relatively easy to activate. Magnesium can deform by (1012) twinning when stressed along the c axis jn tension, but not in compression. In contrast, (1011) twinning is activated by compression along the c axis and not by tension. In addition to primary twinning, secondary twinning or slip can occur within the reoriented material of primary twins.' In general at least five independent shear systems must be active to bring about an arbitrary shape change such as that in the individual grains of a deforming polycrystalline material.' Because basal slip can_ provide only two independent shear systems and (1012) twinning can only accommodate an extension of the c axis, other deformation modes must be active in magnesium for an arbitrary shape change to occur. The purpose of this investigation has therefore been to study the various deformation modes in magnesium at room temperature, with special emphasis on those modes that are less easily activated. The effect of the alloying elements, thorium and lithium, has also been investigated. In polycrystalline aggregates, unambiguous identification of deformation modes is extremely difficult and the direct evaluation of the resolved shear stresses to activate them is not feasible. On the other hand, uni-axial tension and compression experiments on single crystals may not activate some of the- deformation modes because basal slip and/or {1012) twinning cannot be suppressed in most orientations. However, it should be possible to activate all possible deformation modes using oriented single crystals and plane-strain compression. Identification of active deformation systems and evaluation of the resolved shear stresses required to activate them should be facilitated. Wonsiewicz and Backofen have recently completed an investigation of the plasticity of pure magnesium crystals at various temperatures utilizing plane-strain compression and selected crystal orientations. This technique has also been used in the present work. The seven orientations selected for study are indicated in Table I. Plane-strain compression along the c axis (orientations A and B) should activate some deformation mode _other than basal, prism, or pyramidal slip, or (1012) twinning. In orientations C and D, prism or pyramidal slip would be expected to take place. When the compressive load is applied perpendicular to an unconstrained c axis (orientations E and F) the three slip modes should be suppressed but not (10i2) twinning. In orientation G, basal slip should occur.

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. In the Coast Mountains approximately 110 miles north of Vancouver, the gold mine of Bralorne- Pioneer Mines Ltd. lies at an elevation of 3500 ft. The deepest or 41 level in the mine is at an elevation of 1400 ft below sea level, and the rock temperature on this level is 122.5°F. The thermal gradient is 1 "F increase in temperature for each 67.5 ft increase in depth. The mine produces between 500 and 600 tons per clay, utilizing an adit two internal shafts, and one service shaft from surface. The Queen shaft, extending from the 26 to the 41 level, IS the deepest, and most production now comes from this area. Stoping in by cut and fill using mill tailing hydraulic backfill.

THE low-volatile, or smokeless, coal field of southern West Virginia is in Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming, Mercer, Summers and McDowell counties, in the extreme southern portion of the state, and extends into the adjacent counties of Tazewell and Buchanan in Virginia. McDowell County is the largest producer, with Fayette and Raleigh counties next. The total area of the field (Fig. 1) is approximately 1600 square miles, or 1,024,000 acres. The percentage of volatile matter in the various seams ranges from 15 to 26 per cent. The upper limit of true low-volatile coal is usually considered to be 23 per cent volatile matter; above this point, the coal usually is classed as medium volatile. This limit will be used in this paper.

MINING method improve through the gradual process of evolution and in 1340 there were no marked outstanding innovations. On the other hand refinements of detail and betterment: in equipment design continued to progress. Among the most important changes have been the increased application of trucks and highway equipment, including tractors and bull- dozers, to open-pit mining as exemplified by Phelps Dodge's Morenci operations; the Mesabi iron range; and the Tri-State district. Mass or bulk handling contributed its part underground with slurhers and conveyors at Consolidated Coppermines and slushers at Climax; and in open-pit mining. conveyors found increased use on the Mesabi range.

N OT so long ago, the discovery of an orebody took place only by accident. At the present time mineral deposits, even though concealed, may be revealed by their physical or geophysical characteristics, considered in connection with geological studies. Geophysical methods are based on sound, scientific principles and in no sense partake of the mysteries of "divining-rod " methods. Geophysical methods are divided into two main groups: Group I: Methods where fields of force surrounding mineral deposits are investigated (magnetic, gravitometric, electric) ; Group I1 : Methods where fields of force are applied (produced) and anomalies caused in these fields by mineral deposits are recorded (electric, seismic). By methods belonging to Group I, the investigation of the fields of force may be brought to an astonishing degree of accuracy by means of highly sensitive and delicate apparatus (torsion and magnetic balances) ; at least, in simple cases these methods have proved to be of great value.

IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.
