Application of the coal hydrogenation process for the production of chemicals is described. It has been estimated that a plant to produce 31,090 bbl per day of chemicals and fuels would cost $326,- 000,000. These products would consist of 6.1 pct by weight tar acids, 50.8 pct aroma tics, 16.4 pct LPG, and 26.7 pct gasoline. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aro-matics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil—boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C—can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.' Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydrogen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. The Colorado Plateau region has been the principal domestic source of uranium, vanadium, and radium. The value of these commodities produced from the region through 1964 slightly exceeds $2 billion. Most of the deposits occur in streamlaid lenses of sandstone in the Chinle and Morrison Formations. The ore minerals below the zone of oxidation are low-valent oxides and silicates of uranium and vanadium; all of these, except the quite stable vanadium silicates, oxidize readily to a variety of high-valent uranium and vanadium minerals. The ore minerals partly replace fossil wood but mainly impregnate sandstone, typically forming tabular ore bodies that are nearly concordant to the bedding of the host rock. The deposits range in size from those containing only a few tons of ore to those containing more than 1 million tons. Stratigraphic, lithologic, and sedimentary structural factors obviously influenced the localization of these deposits, but igneous activity, hydrothermal mineralization, and tectonic structures show no similarly consistent influence on localization. The deposits are epigenetic, but the source of the ore metals, the nature of the ore-bearing solutions, and the time of ore emplacement are uncertain. A few uranium deposits in the region are dominantly discordant to bedding and occur in collapsed breccia pipes or along linear fractures. Their origins are also uncertain.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of feed size on the integral rate at which feed material is dry ground in a laboratory rod mill. The data are interpreted in terms of the Gaudin-Meloy distribution equation. The equation, Mo — Mt/t = Aoxo r-1, is found to hold for feed sizes smaller than some critical size or for grinding times larger than some critical time. It is shown that a feed grindability is related to this critical size, which appears to be the transition between predominately impact and predominately attrition grinding. Detailed research on feed size effects in comminution has been rather limited. Gaudin1 ground single-sieve fractions of quartz for extended time periods (four hours) in a laboratory ball mill. His work, which was designed to study the nature of size distributions, showed that there is a critical feed size above which comminution occurs primarily by attrition. For his system, the critical size was about 2-mm when using 22-mm balls. In a more recent investigation2 single-sieve fractions of quartz were ground in a laboratory rod mill for constant time periods (15 min) to determine how feed size affects the grindability of the material. This work showed that grindability is essentially independent of feed size in the rod mill after this moderately long grinding period. To further clarify this observation, a study in which feed size and grinding times are varied over a fairly wide range, and particularly, a study of the dependence of the integral rate of grinding on feed size during the initial stages of rod milling is necessary. Tile creep behavior of a iron was investigated over the range of temperatures from 375° to 1150°K. Apparent activation energies for creep, obtained by the effect of sudden changes in temperature on the creep rate, revealed the presence of- four distinguishable regions. The creep behavior of a iron in Regions II (480° to 774°K) and 111 (775° to 1045°K) was found to correlate well with a model where the creep rate is controlled by the nonconsevualive motion. of jogged screw dislocations. An anomalous increase in the apparent activation energy fur creep in Region III was found to be in harmony with the known decrease in the free activation energy for self-diffusion over the Curie transformation range. Furthermore, the creep rates in Regions II and III were found to increase with stress due not only to the effect of stress on the activation energy but also to an increase in density of mobile dislocations. The evidence suggests that pipe diffusion along moving dislocations could be a significant factor over the lower temperatures of Region II. ALTHOUGH the creep properties of iron and steel have been of interest to metallurgists for some time and an extensive literature is now available, most of the published information has not produced much toward understanding the fundamental dislocation processes controlling the creep behavior of these materials. Whereas the activation energy for high-temperature creep of metals usually agrees well with that for self-diffusion, Sherby, Orr, and Dorn1 deduced from the data of Tapsell -and c1enshaw2 that the activation energy for creep of Armco iron is about 78,000 cal per mole and more recently Lytton and sherby3 reviewed the data of Jenkins and Mellor4 and found an activation energy for creep of a iron of 80,000 cal per mole. Both values are substantially greater than the activation energy for self-diffusion in a iron. Because of the limited data suitable for purposes of identifying the controlling dislocation mechanisms of creep and the unusually high activation energies for creep quoted above, it was considered desirable to reinvestigate in detail the creep of a iron by more reliable techniques which would provide sufficient data for determination of the creep mechanisms. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Creep specimens were prepared from 3/8 by 4 in. iron bar stock of the following composition by weight percent: 0.001 C, 0.0120 0, 0.001 N, 0.004 S, and 0.003 P. The as-received bars were cold-rolled to a thickness of 0.100 in., annealed under argon for 30 min at 1113°K, cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.063 in., and machined into tensile specimens having gage section 0.250 in. wide and 1.70 in. long. Finally they were recrystallized under argon at 1113°K. Specimens to be crept above 1060°K were recrystallized at 1173°K. Both recrystallization treatments gave the same reproducible equiaxed ASTM No. 4 grain size. Creep testing was conducted in machines fitted with Andrade-Chalmers arms that maintained a constant stress to within ±0.2 pct of the reported values. Deformation over the specimen gage section was sensed with a linear differential transformer and recorded auto-graphically as a function of time. The strains deduced from these measurements were sensitive to ±5 x 10-5. During creep the specimens were contained in an argon-filled chamber which was immersed in a temperature-controlled molten tin bath. Creep temperatures, as measured by thermocouples attached to the specimen, were maintained to within ±10.25°K of the reported values. For activation-energy determinations rapid changes in temperature of about 12°K were obtained within 30 sec by direct resistance heating of the creep specimen, and maintained to ±1°K of the reported values. Observations of structural details of specimens before and after creep tests were made by electrolytic polishing and etching in acqueous ammonium persulfate. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A typical example of the determination of apparent activation energies, Q, by the effect of small changes in temperature is illustrated in Fig. 1. Q is defined by

An evaluation is made of the possible cautsal relationship between twinning and fracture in molybdenum. For both single and poly crystalline material no instance of twin-induced fracture was observed. Instead brittle fracture was found to be slip-induced at heterogeneities. For single-crystal material, the yield stvess in compression and the fracture stvess in tensiow obey a similar angular- relationship which follows approximately a 1/cos2 ? law. where 0 is the angle between the specimen axis and the nearest (100) plane. This sittlilarity between yield and fracture behavior casts doubt on the interpretations made previoltsly that a 1/cos2? relationship supports a critical normal fracture stress criterion. SINCE fracture in brittle materials takes place at stresses an order of magnitude lower than the theoretical strength of the lattice, it must be postulated that some stress-concentrating effect is operative during the fracture-initiation process. Several mechanisms have been proposed whereby the necessary stress concentrations could be produced. The well-known Cottrell mechanism1 describes a dislocation interaction which can lead to the formation of an incipient cleavage crack on a cleavage plane, and both zener2 and stroh3 have discussed models which predict the stress concentration at the intersection of a slip band with a grain boundary. When twinning occurs twin/twin intersections and twin/grain boundary intersections represent another possible means of fracture initiation. Although still controversial, the concept of twin-induced fracture is supported by a weighty mass of evidence, which has been reviewed in a recent paper.4 This investigation was conducted in order to assess the extent to which the brittleness of molybdenum can be ascribed to this cause. Emphasis was placed on seeking direct metallographic evidence for twin-induced fracture such as arrangements of twins located at the fracture origin. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM Materials. The experimental materials are described inTable I. From the chemical analyses and estimates of the amounts of interstitials likely to be retained in solution,5 it is concluded that all were mul-tiphased systems. X-ray diffraction experiments6 showed no evidence of preferred orientation in the polycrystalline materials. Single crystals were grown from Molybdenum X and Y using the floating-zone technique,' in a vacuum of better than 3 x 10-5 Torr. However difficulties were experienced with Molybdenum X due to violent gas evolution from the molten zone, and additional crystals (Crystals 3 to 6) were produced by annealing for 5 1/2 hr at 2300°C under a vacuum of 10-4 Torr. Techniques. A series of tension, compression, and bend tests was conducted. Tension tests were used to demonstrate brittle behavior, to measure brittle-fracture stresses, and to provide fractured specimens for metallographic inspection. Compression tests were employed in order to obtain some ductility and a measure of the yield stress. Furthermore, it was considered that compression loading would permit the study of crack nucleation in the absence of propagation. The bend tests were conducted to facilitate identification of the fracture origin, which would be expected to be at, or near, the tensile surface of the sample. Tests were carried out at temperatures between 78" and 298°K attained by means of a liquid-nitrogen evaporator of modified Wessel design.' Specimens were fashioned by mechanical grinding, and, prior to heat treatment, were electropolished at 10 v in a 3:l mixture of ethyl alcohol and sulfuric acid, using a stainless-steel cathode. Except where noted, a strain rate of 4 pct per min was used. All specimens had a gage section 0.75 in. long; diameters of 0.10 and 0.20 in. were adopted for the tension and compression specimens, respectively, the former of single shoulder design, the ends being gripped in split collets with a conical bearing surface. In the bend test, electropolished specimens measuring 0.080 by 0.25 by 1.25 in. were deformed at 78°K by four-point loading. The bending device had spans of 1 in. between the outer and 4 in between the inner fulcra; it was stressed between the compression anvils of the Instron machine at a constant deflection rate. THE origin of so-called annealing or recrystalli-zation twins in face-centered-cubic metals continues to be a matter for speculation, and in the present report an attempt is made to explain their origin and to account for at least a majority of the observations concerning their behavior. The fact that annealing twins are prominent only The speelmen was deformed 8 pet in compression and then indented over the lower left-hand corner in a Rockwell in-denter, and then annealed to cause partial recrystallization. Note intense twinning in heavily deformed part and slight twinning in less deformed part. The upper right-hand corner is unrecrystalized. In 1926, Mathewson1 reported the observation by Phillips that annealing twins are frequently parallel to strain markings which delineate octahedral planes in the deformed (and partially recrystallized) matrix, and suggested that strain markings are mechanical twins which grow into annealing twins during recrystallization. Later work by Burke and Barrett' has shown that strain markings are traces of planes upon which slip has occurred, and that there is no evidence for the formation of mechanical twins of microscopically resolvable width in face-centered-cubic metals. Mathewson3 has pointed out, however, that slip may produce twin faults, and later modifications of this hypothesis have assumed that twin faults rather than true mechanical twins serve as the nuclei for annealing twins. Carpenter and Tamura5 suggested, also in 1926, that annealing twins might form by accidents of growth. If recent trends in the rotary drill market are indicative of future surface mining operating practice, then the move to scaled-up mining equipment by manufacturers may soon be over. Of the 48 different rotary drills currently produced by 12 manufacturers, over 60% were introduced within the past five years. By far, the new drills have been in the "small" class, capable of producing up to a 229-mm-diam (9-in.) blasthole with 222 kN (50,000 lb) or less of down pressure. New rotary drills in the "large" class, capable of producing a 311-mm-diam (12 1/4-in.) blasthole with up to 423 kN (95,000 lb) down pressure, have also been prominent. In the super-size category, new drills producing blasthole sizes to 444-mm-diam (17 1/2-in.) with up to 578 kN (130,000 lb) have been minimal.

Introduction The technique being investigated here uses a physical mine model which consists of a plexiglass room-and-pillar model 11.4 x 11.4 cm (4.5 x 4.5 in.). It is placed at the bottom of a larger plexiglass box 25.4 x 30.5cm (10 x 12 in.). The box is then filled with a model material representing geologic overburden. Sand has been selected because of its deformability under gravitational forces. The mine model is capable of creating a cavity and induces movement on the surface of the model material. This surface disturbance can be measured using a photographic technique called holographic interferometry. This paper discusses results of an investigation of the possibility of generating subsidence criteria using physical mine models and laser holographic interferometry. Problem Statement Subsidence appears to be widespread in two states - Pennsylvania and Illinois - although serious subsidence is found in localized areas of numerous other states (HRB Singer Inc., 1977). The US Bureau of Mines estimates that more than 1618 km2 (400,000 acres) of urban areas are threatened by subsidence. Pennsylvania and West Virginia contain 57% of these threatened areas, with the remainder being spread out over 16 states (Johnson and Miller, 1979). Events of subsidence have been reported in urban areas, including Pennsylvania (Gray et al., 1977) and Illinois (Mahar and Marino, 1981). One location has observed three episodes of subsidence beginning in 1950 (Bruhn et al., 1981). These subsidence events all occurred over abandoned room-and-pillar mines. Some mines have been abandoned more than 50 years (Bauer and Hunt,1981) . Available research does not offer much on the problem related to time dependent subsidence, especially those associated with the failure of remnant coal pillars. The physical modeling technique developed at West Virginia University is capable of measuring both instantaneous and time delayed subsidence. Laser Holographic Interferometry Laser holographic interferometry, or holometry, uses the interference properties of laser light to measure small movements of objects. The object requires only optical access and no surface instrumentation. This technique is closely related to photoelasticity. Both techniques rely on the uniqueness of the light reflected off or through an object in any given state of stress. The entire measurement process is done remotely without any surface instrumentation and without using a camera. The interferogram is constructed and visual observation will yield fringes on all areas that yielded or moved. The displacement represented by one fringe was determined by Wilson et al. (1977) and is given by the relationship: [d ='1(1) 2 cos 8 where d = displacement of one fringe 6 = incident angle of laser light A = wavelength of light (632.8 x 10-9 meters for Helium-Neon lasers)] In summary, holometry is capable of detecting very small movements of objects under study. It is a very sensitive process that requires laser light and vibration free experiments. Experimental Program Lab Facilities The primary components of the facilities were the laser and the optical table. The light source was 50 milli-watt, Helium-Neon laser. The optical table was a granite slab weighing nearly one ton. All experiments were performed on the optical table. It consists of a large table sitting on air cells similar to car innertubes. Six air cells were placed on top of two layers of wood and Styrofoam. Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the vibration free table. Even with these precautions, the experiments still had to be performed at night to reduce potential traffic related vibrations. Room-and-pillar mine models consisting of three different pillar sizes were constructed out of plexiglass. The models were designed to represent three different extraction ratios. Figure 2 shows the models. The extraction ratios were determined by the tributary loading concept (Peng, 1978). These models were the primary component of a seam extraction simulator. A schematic of this simulation device is shown in Fig. 3.

THIS is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. CAUSES OF LOSS IN ORE-CONCENTRATION. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of-loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition; we can then study to see in what way the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take, these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.-Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur: first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size ; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to, the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrushing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the only one requiring special treatment at our hands. PETROLEUM has come to be one of the most important and essential of the mineral re- sources of the nation. It is the most advantageous source of mineral fuels and of lubricants, and as such it has provided in large measure for the phenomenal development in our modern means of travel and in the facilities for transportation by land, sea, and air. Without it the remark- ably rapid industrial and social progress in our country during the past thirty years could not have occurred. In view of its important place and the fact that petroleum is irreplaceable and existent in limited quantities in nature, its conservation is essential.

IN 1948, the writer and his associates determined the surface tension of solid copper by balancing the force of surface tension in a very fine wire against an external load.' At that time we, in common with other early workers, assumed that grain boundary energy in a pure metal is very small in comparison to the energy of an external surface. Accordingly, we neglected the internal surface energy of the coarse-grained specimens. Since that time, experimental evidence has accumulated showing that grain boundary energy, far from being small, is generally about one-third of the energy of an external surface.2-4 This is sufficient to introduce a significant error into our determination. The differential equation governing equilibrium is: wdl - yds, + y*ds2 [I] rather than wdl = yds as originally written. w is the balancing force in dynes, 1 the length of the specimen, sl the external and s2, the internal surface area, y the copper/ copper vapor surface tension, and y* the grain boundary tension. Fortunately, we had made for another purpose a careful study of the size and shape of the grains, and found that the boundaries, with rare exceptions, traversed the specimens and were perpendicular to the wire axis. For this case, eq 1 leads to w = rry -(n) r2y* [2] where r is the wire radius and (n is the number of grains per unit length. A count of some twenty 5-mil wires indicated that - n became 80 & 10 after a short anneal near the melting point, and remained nearly constant for as long as 96 hr at temperature. An assumption of y* = 1/3y leads to a defining eauation for r: [31 The term in the brackets may be considered a correction factor applied to eq 11 of ref. 1. Upon applying this factor, the surface tension of solid copper at its melting point is found to be 1650 & 100 dynes per cm, rather than 1370 as previously reported.' The new temperature coefficient is —0.55 dynes per cm per "C. Grain boundary energy is more significant than surface energy to the physical metallurgist. It is evident from eq 2 that a series of experiments with wires of different grain size can lead to an evaluation of y*. The details of such an experiment are being worked out now. References 1 H. TO my mind the National Bituminous Coal Act so far has proved one of the unhappiest experiences that has ever befallen the bituminous coal operators of the United States. Viewed in the light of its ugly consequences everyone should recognize this measure for what it is -a weird thing as unreal as a page from "Alice in Wonderland." Indeed it might be another stanza to the tale of the Walrus and the Carpenter, with the coal operators in the role of the unfortunate oysters who were taken on that memorable ramble. It is time that coal producers open their eyes, jerk themselves out of any lingering hypnotic optimism about the price-fixing provisions of this law, demand the repeal of these corroding clauses, and then set about remedying as best they can the disastrous effects of this retromingent scheme to regulate the coal business.

Computer techniques now have been applied to the solution of a wide variety of scientific and engineering problems in the mining industry, but generally not in great depth in any one area. In mining, the area covered in greatest depth and with the greatest success has probably been mine planning and to a lesser degree production scheduling. A rather comprehensive review of the literature related to mine planning and production scheduling indicates that contributions in these areas have been geographically, as well as organizationally, widespread. Of twenty-six papers reviewed, eleven were from industry, eight from educational institutions, four from computer vendors, two from the Bureau of Mines, and one from a private consultant. The conclusions that can be derived from the literature are: First, the-state-of-the art has advanced to the point that computing ore reserves and developing mining plans with the aid of the computer is now a routine practice; second, the application of the computer to mine planning problems has markedly improved our ability to estimate ore reserves, more accurately define pit limits, and determine an optimum mining sequence. MINE PLANNING The papers in this section deal essentially with the problem of determining the final pit limits of an orebody and the ore reserves associated with a given pit limit. The problem is probably best described by Soderberg25 and more recently by Reibell. 23. There are two techniques currently being applied to this problem by several mining companies: 1) the multiple-cone technique and 2) the Lerch-Grossman algorithm. The multiple-cone technique is the older of the two techniques and has the advantage of being more flexible, allowing an engineer to easily vary pit slopes in different sectors of the design. The technique can also be used to define intermediate pit contours. The Lerch-Grossman algorithm is appealing in that the final solution is given in the form of a true mathematical optimum. The technique is limited, however, in that the size of the blocks in the orebody model are a function of the desired

The impressive western San Juan Mountains of Colorado were carved by Pleistocene and Recent erosion from a thick blanket of Tertiary volcanic rocks that rests upon a basement of metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Tertiary. These rocks record a long, complex, and fairly complete sequence of geologic events that have affected the region through much of geologic time. The geologic history of the region includes several periods of deformation, erosion, and igneous activity; closely associated with two of these periods were two periods of mineralization. The older of these was related to Late Cretaceous-early Tertiary (Laramide) intrusive activity, and its deposits occur in the older sedimentary units. The younger, of later Tertiary age and related to the widespread middle Tertiary extrusive and intrusive activity, is the chief concern of this paper. Tertiary volcanism built a great plateau surrounding the San Juan volcanic depression, a complex of subsided crustal blocks in the vent areas. The Silverton and Lake City cauldrons, nested within the larger depression, were domed by resurgent magma that created keystone grabens along the distended crests of the domed floors and many postcauldron radial and concentric fractures, dikes, and intrusive plutons within and marginal to the cauldron sites. The postvolcanic evolution of large quantities of gases, chiefly carbon dioxide and water, propylitically altered the rocks in and around the volcanic depression prior to the younger period of ore deposition. The ore deposits, localized mainly in the radial and concentric fractures about the cauldrons and in the associated graben faults, include fissure veins, chimneys, replacements, and disseminations in volcanic and underlying basement rocks. Fissure veins, constituting the major economic source, yielded precious- and basemetal ores. Most veins are compound with sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite; some veins contain silver-bearing arsenical sulfosalts and free gold. These minerals occur in predominantly quartz gangue. However, gangues composed of several manganese silicates and carbonates and relatively· barren of metals are abundant locally and probably originated by alteration of rocks at roots of faults and fissures during evolution of carbonatic solutions. The bulk of the ores are hypogene and probably had their source in deep parent magmas of the shallow eruptive rocks. Total production since the early 1870's has exceeded half a billion dollars in recovered metals, with a ratio of precious- to base-metal values of about 3 to 2. Since 1930, improvements in metallurgical treatment and mining techniques have increased the base-metal yield.

Sponsored by the Utah Section of AIME, the 1960 Annual Rocky Mountain Minerals Conference brought more than 500 members of the mineral industry to the conference rooms of the Newhouse Hotel in Salt Lake City during the period October 5 to October 7. Under the overall supervision of J. M. Ehrhorn, general chairman, and H. E. Wright, assistant general chairman, the Conference offered 14 papers of technical interest in four sessions during the first two days, and it culminated in the Exploration Symposium held on the morning of October 7. The opening session of the Conference, meeting on the morning of October 5, heard R. P. Work, utility engineer of the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., discuss the growth and economic factors related to the use of natural gas in Utah. In his paper entitled Natural Gas Market In Utah, Mr. Work emphasized the very good prospects of natural gas serving almost all parts of that state. He mentioned that recently the El Paso pipeline, built to serve the Pacific Northwest with gas from Texas, has permitted natural gas to be available to Eastern Utah, and a tentatively planned pipeline from Green River, Wyo. to Southern California will bring natural gas to the central and southeast areas of the state.

This paper describes a method for obtaining compositions of gas and oil phases in equilibrium with each other at a given reservoir temperature and pressure as lean or enriched gas is injected into a reservoir oil not in equilibrium with the gas. The method is based on calculation of equilibrium constants, K, from the equation log Kp = A + B F, where p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. The paper explains how A and B could be determined with a minimum amount of data. The method consists of calculating equilibrium constants as a function of liquid composition and using the K's to calculate changes in compositiort of injection gas as it successively contacts original resetvoir oil at the gas-oil front and the change in composition of reservoir oil as it is successively contacted by the injection gas in the vicinity of an injection well. An iterative process is required. Two examples of the method are given which show how oil and gas compositions and properties are calculated with the aid of a computer. INTRODUCTION The calculation of recovery from lean-gas or enriched-gas injection into a saturated or under-saturated reservoir oil requires a knowledge of how phase properties change in a reservoir between injection well and producing well. To determine the phase compositions or properties experimentally would be difficult and time consuming, especially if one wanted to look at the effect of various injection gas compositions. For some fields an engineer would want to make preliminary calculations on the economics of gas injection before he makes the decision to spend a corrsiderable sum of money for laboratory work to obtain the necessary fluid properties. A method for calculatine compositions and properties based on a minimum of laboratory data is described. The minimum amount of data required is injection gas and reservoir oil composition and injection gas solubility as a function of pressure for an undersaturated oil, or the compositions of mixtures of reservoir fluid with two or more enriched gases, which mixtures have a bubble-point pressure that is the same as the expected average displacement pressure. On the other hand, if the economics appear to be attractive, more laboratory data can be obtained in the form of equilibrium constants for three or more mixtures of the reservoir fluid and injection gases. The method is based on the calculation of K's from the equation, log Kp = A + B F, where K is equilibrium constant, p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. This method of plotting K data by means of the above equation is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.1 A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. It is shown how experimental data are used to determine how A and B vary with composition. BASIS OF METHOD EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS Equilibrium constant (K) data are required for this method. The K of each component is obtained from an equation that gives the product of K and pressure as a function of component characterization factor. The characterization factor F = b(l/Tb — l/T), where b is a constant characteristic of a given component, Tb is the boiling point in OR at atmospheric pressure of the given component, and T is the temperature of the system in OR. Yield point measurements were made on polycrys-talline specimens of a iron deformed various amounts at 770, 1950, or 273°K, aged, and redeformed at 77: 195°, or 273°K. When the prestrain temperature is lower than that subsequent to aging, the yield point return is suppressed relative to specimens deformed at the same temperature both before and after aging. The degree of suppression is a function of both the magnitude of prestrain at the lower temperature and the difference between the deformation temperatures before and after aging. It is proposed that the suppression is caused by the formation of dislocation barriers during the initial low-temperature deformation. The aging kinetics of polycrystalline a-iron wires deformed at 77o or 303oK were studied at 44 " and 64 "C using internal friction measurements. No change was noted as a result of the difference in prestrain temperature. IN an earlier investigation1 it was observed that the return of the yield point was suppressed when a poly-crystalline specimen of a iron was plastically deformed at 77oK, aged at room temperature, and subsequently tested at room temperature. In order to investigate this observation, a research program was undertaken to measure the effect of prestrain temperature on the strain aging of a iron.' According to Thomas and Leak,3 return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,4 the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point upon restraining. In this experiment, both methods of measuring strain aging were employed in order to have two independent measurements of the strain aging phenomenon. In a previous study,5 the strain aging kinetics of a similar lot of a iron were measured for specimens which were prestrained and tested at the same temperature over the range of 77" to 273°K. Although some differences were found in the correlation of the two methods employed for measuring strain aging, the kinetics of strain aging were unaffected by the change of prestrain and test temperature. In another study,6 dislocation line tension and the density of the solute atmosphere were found to contribute to the return of the yield point when ingot iron specimens were prestrained at 303°K and tested at a lower temperature, namely 77°K. This paper is concerned with changes in strain aging kinetics produced by pre-straining at 77" to 303°K and testing at either the prestrain temperature or at higher temperatures up to 273°K. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The polycrystalline a iron specimens used in both the tensile and internal friction tests were 0.033-in. diam ingot iron wires, wet hydrogen treated and re-carburized. A more detailed procedure for processing a 3/16 in. ingot iron rod (nominal wt. pet composition: Fe - 0.013; C - 0.0125; Mn - 0.023; Si -0.005; P - 0.0023; S - 0.11; Cu - 0.004 N) to 0.033 in. diam specimens containing approximately 0.020 wt pet C and no detectable nitrogen with a grain diameter of 0.033 to 0.040 mm is given elsewhere.5 Immediately prior to testing, specimens were solution treated for 15 min at 700o ± 2°C in a static vacuum of less than 50 ?. of Hg and rapidly quenched into an ice-water bath while still enclosed in a 3 mm quartz vial.
