Born, March 28, 1853 Died July 23, 1916 On July 25, 1916, the Board of Directors adopted the following minute and directed that it be entered upon the records of the Board & published in the Bulletin of the Institute, and thereof be sent to the family of Mr. Kirchhoff: Charles Kirchhoff was one of the oldest, most widely known and most highly esteerned members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. On his return in 1875 from a European course of study, to begin a highly successful professional career, he joined the Institute, then just commencing to acquire both national and international recognition. He became at once, and-for more than 40 years continued to be, its earnest , and active supporter, serving it as Manager, Councilor or Director for terms aggregating 9 years,-as Vice-President for 2 years, and twice as President for a year. During the critical period of the erection of the United Engineering Society's building, and the transfer of the Institute to permanent head-quarters therein, Mr. Kirchhoff was its efficient representative in the United Engineering Society, and on the Building Committee. In 1910, amid the congratulations of colleagues, employees, and innumerable friends, Mr. Kirchhoff retired from active business as Vice- President and General Manager of a great technical publishing company. Yet he sacrificed of his well-earned leisure yet one more year, to serve the Institute as President through 1911.

Since Honda and Murakamil in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450° C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450" and 1000" C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000" C. and heated for 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt's second intermediate phase. While Takeda failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200" and 1450" C. no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed 'either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

"HEREDITY"' in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mecha-nism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem.

Hydrogen-reduction data for naturally occurring single crystals and Prepared polycrystals of dense hematite have been presented. Results cover the temperature range 400o to 1000oC, for particles from ten sources, ranging in size from 0.07 to 10 mm and in shape from spheres to cylinders, cubes, and thin slabs. A consistent pattern of behavior has been demonstrated for single crystals and the reduction mechanism shown to be temperature-dependent. Below 579oC reduction is a simple topochemical process but at higher temperatuves it is complex and occurs in two distinct stages. Prepared particles from these laboratories behave in a similar manner to the single crystals. Data from two investigators showing topochernical reduction of Prepared particles above 575°C are inconsistent with that for other dense hematites. It is concluded that topochenzical reaction should not be used as a model for generalized rate expressions for dense hematites. SINCE 1958, McKewan1-6 has brought to prominence a simple concept of dense hematite reduction. This model is that oxygen is lost from a hematite particle undergoing reduction only from an oxide-iron interface that recedes in such a way that the oxide remaining retains the original shape of the particle, i.e., reduction occurs topochemically. An adjunct to this concept is that any intermediate oxides in the transition from hematite to iron only form thin layers so that oxygen cannot be lost from the particle without movement of the oxide-iron interface. Further, the rate of oxygen loss from the particle is said to be proportional to the area of the receding interface so that the iron layer grows linearly with time and the over-all reduction process can be described by the equation where ro and do are the initial particle radius and density, respectively, R is the fraction of the original oxygen lost, i.e., the fractional reduction, at time t, and K is the rate constant. The idea of an underlying simplicity in hematite reduction is attractive because it gives a tractable basis from which general theories of hematite reduction can be developed and it has received wide support,7-14 based mainly on the large amount of data13 that can be fitted to Eq. [I]. However, despite the fact that this equation has been derived for dense materials, the bulk of the data that have been used to test it13 have been for materials of only about 90 pct of theoretical density (5.26 g cm-3) or less, so that its generality for dense hematites has not been demonstrated. In any case, as will be seen, adherence of reduction data to Eq. [1] does not necessarily imply that reaction occurs topochemically. In this work only data for hematites approaching theoretical density are considered and it will be shown that in only one study besides McKewan's is topochemical behavior observed over the whole range of temperature investigated. For the majority of materials a linear rate of interface advance is observed to complete reduction only when wustite is not a stable intermediate phase in the transition of hematite to iron, i.e., at temperatures below about 575°C. Above this temperature, reduction is an exceedingly complex series of reactions that takes place in two distinct stages and it is only in the first stage that reaction in any way resembles a topochemical process. This means then that, far from representing general behavior as has commonly been supposed, topochemical reaction for dense hematites is only a particular behavior that may be observed under some circumstances. EXPERIMENTAL Hydrogen-reduction data have been collected and cross-checked in these laboratories by three techniques, weight loss, collection of water evolved in the reduction reactions, and direct metallographic examination. Details of these techniques are discussed elsewhere," where it is shown that results obtained by the three methods are in close agreement. The weight-loss method, by which most of the results were obtained, consisted of hanging the sample in a platinum mesh basket from an Ainsworth Model AV-AU-1 vacuum recording balance inside a vertical l 1/4-in.-ID alumina tube furnace. Dry deoxidized hydrogen was flowed downwards through the tube at 2 to 4 liters min-1 (stp). Single crystals from two sources and artificial oxides from three sources have been examined. The single crystals were from hematite deposits at Yampi Sound, Western Australia, and Brazil, the latter being obtained from Gregory, Bottley and Co., London, U.K. The "Yampi Blue" crystals were hand-picked from washed, magnetically concentrated, sized fractions, -200 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.07 mm) and —36 + 44 mesh BSS (mean diameter ca 0.4 mm) while 10-mm cubes were cut from the Brazilian crystals with a diamond saw. The starting materials for the prepared particles were hematites designated, respectively, "Specpure Iron Oxide", Laboratory No. S639 from Johnson Matthey & Co. Ltd., London, U.K., "Calcined Ferric Oxide" from B.D.H. Laboratory Chemicals Division, Poole, U.K., and "Pigment Grade Oxide", EPR-50, from C. K. Williams & Co., Easton, Pa., U.S.A. Approximately spherical particles were prepared from the artificial oxides by rolling the material, moistened if necessary, in a glass jar, and cylindrical compacts approximately 10 mm in diam and of approximately equal height were pressed in a steel die at 200 psi. Fording Coal Limited's mine in the Rocky Mountains near Elkford, B.C. has produced 21.8 million clean tonnes of metallurgical coal from 1971 to 1980, inclusive. This production has come from several pit areas and required the removal of 149.1 million bank cubic meters of waste rock and overburden by truck-shovel and dragline operations. Waste dumps from 30m to 200m in height have been successfully constructed on natural slopes, generally between 10° and 26°. Design considerations for the dumps include foundation and soil conditions, natural slope angles and containment of weak overburden or rehandle materials. Dump control is maintained by monitoring the crest and the face of an active dump area. Crest movement is measured by extensometers locally termed "Spoil Monitors". When crest movement rates progressively increase above normal, dumping operations are temporarily relocated. Some unstable conditions and mass failures have occurred as the result of natural foundation slopes being in excess of 26°, failure of weak water saturated foundation soils or weak material being placed on the dump.

DESPITE the handicap of reduced production in many districts, the mining industry in 1938 forged steadily ahead toward solution of its minor technical problems and has of-defected major advances in several fields. In California hydraulic mining for gold, shut down for forty years, will shortly be resumed following revision of restrictive laws. Disposal of hydraulicked ground is to be regulated by settling dams so as not to interfere with agriculture. Gold mining has been aided also by the development of a new high-efficiency dry amalgamator which applies the Ramsay mercury separator to the original de Phily process. Based on the principle that crushed ore will follow a rod into a mercury bath, this simple device is primarily adapted to dry areas and is to be available in small, multiple units suitable

A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mechanism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem. Normal and "Dendritic" Cast Iron As examples of variation in type of structure, photomicrographs of two test bars of cast iron are shown (Figs. 1 and 2) and the composition and properties are given in Table 1. Both are common, unalloyed gray iron. Test bar No. 13 has normal graphite flakes while No. 49 has very fine, lacy graphite arranged in a dendritic pattern, the matrix in both being pearlite. These two types of cast iron are well known to foundry-men and need no detailed description.

The heals of formation at 78", 195, and 273°K of the ternary compound h3SbTe2 based on the elements and based on the binary compounds In Sb and [inTe have been measured. The heats of formation at these temperatlcres of the binary compounds In Sb and In Te based on the elements have also been determined. Heal contents and free energies of the three compounds have been calculated from 0° lo 80I)°K. The free energies of joyrrzalion, heats of formations, and entropies of formation at 298°K have also been calculated. The results shown that the tertnary compound is metastable with vespecl to InSh and ln Te below 696 °K. bul is slable above that temperature. The weaker bonding of results in a positice entropy of formation which with incrensirzg temperature makes increasing negative conlvihtclions to the free energy and above 696°K renders the compound slable. THE ternary compound In3SbTez occurring in the quasi-binary system In Sb- In Te' forms on cooling at 829°K by a peritectic reaction.' Observations at 673" and 573 K have shown that this ternary compound decomposes slowly into the binary compounds InSb and1n~e.l'' It has not been possible to analyze the metastable behavior of the ternary compound because up to the present time data on its thermodynamic properties have been lacking. Some information on the binary compounds, however, is available. The heat of formation of InTe at 273°K and its free energy at 673°K are kn~wn.~'~ The heats of formation of InSb at 78", 273', 298", and 723°K have been measured5-' and its heat capacity between approximately 12" and 300"Kg9l0 is also known. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation at 78% 195% and 273°K of the ternary compound In3SbTez have been measured. The heats of formation of the binary compounds InSb and InTe at these temperatures have been obtained by combining new calorimetric results with previously published data. The heat contents and free energies of the three compounds at various temperatures from 0" to 800°K have been calculated. Against the background of this information, the metastability of the ternary compound will be discussed. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.l) Preparation of Specimens. The materials used consisted of the elements indium, antimony, and tellurium, the binary compounds InSb and InTe, and the ternary compound In3SbTez. The elements, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., had a nominal purity of 99.999+ pct. The compound InSb was Cominco semiconductor grade; the compound InTe was prepared from the elements by melting under a vacuum of 10-h m Hg followed by slow cooling. Three batches of specimens of the compound In3SbTez were used. One batch was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of the elements in an evacuated and sealed Vycor tube. The melt was held at approximately 100°K above the liquidus for about 8 hr, shaken repeatedly, and quenched into a mixture of ice and water. The specimen was annealed in vacuum at 760°K for 4 weeks. In preparing a second batch, a mixture of the component elements was melted and quenched in water. The resulting ingot was powdered. The powder was pressed into pellets, which were annealed in vacuum at 748" to 773°K for 4 weeks. A third batch was prepared in the same manner as the second, except that the starting materials were InSb and InTe rather than the elements. Metallographic examination of samples of the three batches and X-ray diffraction examination of a sample of the second batch did not reveal evidence of microsegregation or a second phase. The results obtained with the three batches showed no systematic differences. 1.2) Calorimetry. The calorimetric method has been described in detail." Samples of the compound In3SbTez, mechanical mixtures of InSb and InTe in the proportion of 1:2, and mechanical mixtures of indium, antimony, and tellurium in the proportion of 3:1:2 were added to a bismuth-rich bath at 623°K in a metal-solution calorimeter. These additions were made from 78°K (liquid nitrogen), 195°K (dry ice and acetone), and 273°K (ice and water). The heat effects of the additions were measured. The difference in the heat effects of the additions of a compound and the additions of the mixtures of its constituents, adjusted for differences in the concentration of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound. In the concentration range not exceeding 1.5 at. pct solute, the heat effect of the additions was a linear function of concentration. The heat of formation refers to the temperature from which the additions were made, namely, 78", 195", or 273°K. Several calibrating additions were made in each calorimetric run. The calculated heat capacity of the calorimeter and hence the calculated heat effects of the additions of samples depend upon the values adopted for the heat contents of the calibrating substance. In this investigation bismuth at 273°K was used and a value of 4.96 kcal per g-atom was taken for (HGZ3"k . 2) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 2.l) Heats of Formation. THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses.
