The use of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for x-ray fluorescence analysis is illustrated by analysis for iron, copper, zinc, tin, and lead in about 700 samples taken from Australian mineral process streams. Limits of detection based on counting statistics (3 standard deviations) range from 0·001 to 0·004 per cent by weight element. The analysis accuracy was usualIy between 2 to 10 per cent (rms) of the mean element concentration and was determined by comparison with assays supplied by mineral companies. In most cases the main cause of error appears to be due to this assay and not the x-ray fluorescence technique.Some potential fields of application of solid state detector and radioisotope x-ray source for analyses in the mineral industry are indicated.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand. The reform of New ZealandÆs minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New ZealandÆs resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990. With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. There are several thousand remote stream crossing structures in the Tongass National Forest in need of removal. In 2007 thirty-three collapsing log bridges, log culverts, and metal culverts no longer in use were removed with explosives. Species of salmon, trout, char, and sculpin are present in the project area. Blasting overpressures may injure or kill fish in streams and ground vibrations can damage salmonid embryos in streambeds. Regulatory agencies offer guidelines with limits for blasting induced overpressures and vibrations. However, there has been no quantification of blast overpressures in shallow streams. Methods used to predict lethal levels for various blasting applications have not been completely validated. This research provides guidance for analyzing ground vibrations and water overpressures during blasting activities in or around fish streams.

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. The ~2500 km long Kermadec-Tonga arc northeast ofNew Zealand is the longest continuous intraoceanic arc in the world. At least 94 volcanic centres along the arc are submarine, most (87 per cent) within the Kermadec arc (de Ronde et al, 2003a). Volcanic rocks range from basalt to rhyodacite with trace element and isotopic data indicating significant magma source heterogeneity both along and across the arc. &nbsp; The entire ~1300 km of the Kermadec arc has now been surveyed for hydrothermal emissions (de Ronde et al, 2004). First-stage surveys utilised surface vessels. In February 1996, the first sulfide samples from the southern Kermadec arc were dredged from the Brothers and Rumble II West caldera volcanoes (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN96/03; Wright et al, 1998; de Ronde et al, 2003b). In September 1998, low-temperature, diffuse venting was discovered at Monowai, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes, and high-temperature, black smoker venting was found within Brothers caldera (R/V Sonne cruise SO-135; Stoffers et al, 1999). The NZAPLUME cruise of March 1999 surveyed 13 volcanic centres (each mainly comprised of single, large volcanoes) of the southern Kermadec arc and documented hydrothermal emissions above seven of them (de Ronde et al, 2001; Baker et al, 2003; Massoth et al, 2003). In July 2001, additional mineralised and hydrothermally altered samples were dredged from Brothers volcano (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN01/07). The NZAPLUME II cruise of May 2002 confirmed venting was still occurring at all the known hydrothermal sites, and that ten active vent sites occurred along the mid-part of the arc, between Brothers and Raoul Island (de Ronde et al, 2002). In September-October 2004, NZAPLUME III surveyed the northern-most part of the Kermadec arc where another nine volcanic centres are hydrothermally active. &nbsp; Second-stage exploration of the Kermadec arc hydrothermal systems utilised deep submergence vehicles. In October-November 2004, the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 made four dives on Brothers. Samples recovered include vent fluids, chimneys, altered rocks and various animals and microbes. In April-May 2005, a more extensive expedition using the American submersible Pisces V made 23 dives on nine different volcanic centres, eight of them for the first time. &nbsp; Extensive plume surveys show Brothers volcano is host to the most hydrothermally active sites of all those known along the Kermadec arc. In total, nine dives have been made on Brothers, six on the NW caldera site and three on the cone site. The NW caldera vent site is a long-term hydrothermal system that is today dominated by evolved seawater but has had episodic injections of magmatic fluid. The cone site is a nascent magmatic-hydrothermal system where crack zones localise upwelling acidic waters (de Ronde et al, 2005). A SE caldera site represents the main upflow of a relatively well-established magmatic-hydrothermal system on the seafloor where sulfide-rich chimneys are extant. Each of these different vent sites represent diverse parts of an evolving hydrothermal system, any one of which may be typical of submarine volcanic arcs.

Many copper processing flowsheets in the Democratic Republic of Congo include the leaching of oxide ores containing copper and cobalt, copper solvent extraction, copper electrowinning, and precipitation of cobalt salt. Recently, cobalt price gained momentum, driven mostly by the fast-growing electric vehicles battery market. The ore blending scenarios tend to prioritise high cobalt grade ore, whatever the content of copper and other impurities. Therefore, many copper solvent extraction circuits are running below design capacity. The variability of feed induces a variability of the leach solution with respect to copper, manganese, and silica contents. It is thus important to adjust hydrodynamic and metallurgical parameters of the solvent extraction plant to optimise metallurgical performance, production cost, and the quality of the copper electrolyte. This paper presents some results on how solvent extraction plant parameters have been managed in two solvent extraction plants running with lower than designed copper input. INTRODUCTION Referring to a report of the chamber of commerce of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the online publication Agence Ecofin (2019) indicated that the DRC ranks in the fifth position of the world top copper producing countries with over 1.2 million tons produced in 2018. The same year, 66% of the world’s cobalt was produced in the DRC at over 106,000 tons. If the political situation remained stable and the new tax regime introduced in 2018 did not deter private investors, copper production could reach 1.4 million tons/a in 2020 as pointed out in Mining.com (2019). Forecast figures for DRC cobalt production vary widely depending on analysts. The DRC online magazine Actualité.cd (2018) referring to a ministerial source forecasts over 141,000 t cobalt/a for 2020. The reality will depend on many factors, including the selling price, the supply compared to the demand, and finally the reaction of investors to the new DRC tax regime. The growing electric vehicle batteries market has been the major key driver of the price of cobalt. The five years historical cobalt price graph in figure 1 from infomine.com (2019) shows that the price of cobalt peaked at over 40 USD/lb in the first quarter of 2018. Cited by the online Magazine Creamer Media, Smith (2019) has indicated that the long-term demand of cobalt will likely remain strong.

FOR rapidly marking in geological and topographical features on parish plans, the author has used the Veeder cyclometer with very satisfactory results. A simple Veeder cyclometer, usually retailed at cycle depots at 4s., is fixed to the axle of the front wheel of an ordinary bicycle. The cyclometer is desigued to read in miles and tenths of miles, which are recorded through gearing actuated by a striker on a spoke of the bicycle wheel engaging one of the vanes of the cyclometer once every revolution.By using 80 strikers the reading would be in chains and tenths of chains; therefore the use of 8 strikers gives the reading in chains, utilizing all the figures. The cyclometer is designed to be placed on the right-hand side of the bicycle, and takes up a minimum of space, being only about the size of the top joint of the thumb. With some makes of cycles there is insufficient clearance, so the cyclometer must then be placed on the left side, and the 8 strikers made to engage the top vanes, as shown in the sketch (Fig. 1).Very accurate readings can be obtained by this instrument. "The Mount Douglas Granite constitutes the eastern part of the Saint George Batholith and contains the youngest, most differentiated phases of the batholith. It also contains extensive endogranitic, low-grade. Sn- W-Mo-bearing sheeted vein systems. Early phases of the Mount Douglas Granite are coarse- to medium-grained, seriate granites that represent the slowly cooled carapace of the intrusion. Late phases are medium- to fine-grained, equigranular and porphyritic granites that were accompanied by repeated and widespread fracturing of the carapace and injection of mineralizing fluids. These granites represent a highly differentiated suite with ""A "" type affinities developed in a ""within plate"" transitional to ""syn-collision"" tectonic setting. 4oAr/ 39Ar dates for biotites from the various phases indicate emplacement circa 367 Ma.The linear distribution of some phases in the Mount Douglas Granite and the systematic orientations of sheeted veins along tensional fractures indicate structural control on granite emplacement and vein distribution. This type of relatively passive endogranitic mineralization is unique in the granites of southern New Brunswick and contrasts markedly with highly fluidized systems operative elsewhere in the area. IntroductionInvestigation of Sn-W-Mo occurrences in New Brunswick has shown that most of this mineralization is associated with late, highly differentiated phases of post-orogenic (Acadian) granitoid magmatism that occurred during Devonian and Early Carboniferous time (Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1988). The polymetallic Mount Pleasant Sn-W-Mo deposit (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1972; Kooiman et al., 1986)and the Burnt Hill W deposit are two orebodies of this type in New Brunswick. Numerous smaller deposits associated with these granitoid rocks in southwestern New Brunswick have been documented in previous investigations (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1968; Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1985; Lentz, 1985)."

Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. "The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. Some of the changes and their reasons are discussed. INTRODUCTION The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Rreserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The proposed 2016 update is not significantly different from previous versions of the Code. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting. However, reporting may be unclear, ambiguous, selective, obscure, distorted or unintelligible. Part of the purpose of the update is to provide better guidelines to Competent Persons (CPs) to ensure that the material information is being reported and that reporting is transparent in accordance with the guidelines of the Code. The information provided should, as required by the Code, be adequate to inform the “reader/investor or potential investor to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information”. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) highlights the importance of the reporting Codes, as provided from a quote from their website (www.crirsco.com): The mining industry is a vital contributor to national and global economies. It is a truly international business that depends on the trust and confidence of investors and other stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being. Unlike many other industries, it is based on depleting mineral assets, the knowledge of which is important prior to the commencement of extraction. It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the level of trust necessary to underpin its activities."

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.

As it is my opinion that deep alluvial mining in Victoria and in the Murray Flats in New South Wales is practically in its infancy, and considering that we, the old school of alluvial miners, who have thirty or forty years&apos; experience to guide us, must in the natural order of things hand over the management of our mine, to the younger and less experienced&apos; generation of miners, I thought that as our Association has been formed for the purpose of disseminating information and the exchange of ideas, a few notes on the practical working of alluvial mines might be of some service to aspirants for the position of mining manager.The greatest difficulty the alluvial miner has to contend against is the immense quantity of water contained in the drifts overlying the wash in the gutters or ancient river beds, and to cope with this water successfully and economically is the point to be aimed at by our mining managers; and if they thoroughly understand this part of their business in all its details, they will not only win kudos for themselves, but will be the means of saving large sums of money to the companies they represent, and, in many instances, will make a success of a venture which otherwise might be stopped for want of funds before it is properly proved. At the present time, although we have had over forty years&apos; experience indraining the deep leads of the colony, I regret to say that a large amount of ignorance still prevails amongst both directors and managers.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.
