A Flyrock Prevention Taskforce was established in Kentucky with the support of Kentucky's Department of Natural Resources, Kentucky's Explosives Industry, and the University of Kentucky. This paper presents the initial work of the Flyrock Prevention Taskforce towards its missions of identifying the root causes of flyrock incidents based on the analysis of previous events, and tracking the progress of flyrock elimination in the future. Work identifying root causes of flyrock events is presented through the development of a database which manages information about the blasts which caused flyrock. This data includes: blasting and seismograph records, drill logs, videos of the event when available, company notes/incident reports, and any additional information regarding probable cause. Work tracking the progression of flyrock elimination efforts is presented in this paper through the introduction of a flyrock index. Several metrics are proposed for this index, and are discussed for their appropriateness and shortcomings. In order for these indexes to be valid forms of tracking flyrock incident rates additional records must be kept and reported, such as the annual consumption of explosives by surface coal blasting. Suggestions for record keeping, flyrock investigation practices, and means of tracking flyrock incident rates are proposed in this paper.

The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

El presente texto describe la reología de la Pulpa a nivel de química de superficie y así sugerir las alternativas a los problemas que impiden poder operar en forma continua y su capacidad de diseño la Planta de Flotación Diferencial de Cobre – Molibdeno. Asimismo, es necesario definir una solución a escala de laboratorio, la cual debe ser validada con pruebas industriales e implementarla en planta. La estrategia debe garantizar la continuidad de la operación de la Planta de flotación de Molibdeno con cualquier tipo de mineral y que no presente compactación la pulpa. Finalmente, se devbe agarantizar el procesamiento de toda la producción de la planta de cobre en la planta de flotación diferencial de cobre molibdeno.

Although two-entry yield pillar-based gate roads supported by wooden cribs have been commonly used throughout longwalling in the Wasatch PlateadRoan Cliffs coalfield of central Utah, a three-entry yield-abutment gate road configuration was recently trialed in the Hiawatha Seam at the Genwal Resources (GRI) Crandall Canyon No. 1 Mine, near Huntington, UT. Pillar, entry, and cable bolt performance were monitored through second panel mining using a fairly extensive array of geomechanical instruments installed over a span of four crosscuts. Ground pressure and entry closure measurements confirmed that the 9.1-m-wide (30-ft) yield pillar was partially shielded from first panel longwall loads by the 36.6-m-wide (120-ft) abutment pillar, and consequently, experienced only minor yielding until the approach of the second panel face. Complete yielding of the 9. I-m-wide (30-ft) pillar occurred when the second panel was approximately 6.1 m (20 ft) inby the instrumentation site. Average cable bolt loads and differential roof sag remained low through second panel mining and tailgate entry ground conditions were excellent; however, very high ground pressures in the abutment and yield pillars, and second panel rib strongly suggest a high potential for coal bumps utilizing this gate road configuration at mining cover depths in excess of 396 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). This conclusion is supported by the suspected occurrence of small coal bumps along the abutment pillar ribs, observed indirectly as fresh debris in the middle entry just behind the second face. This paper presents a case history developed from the geotechnical measurements and on-site observations of this unique application of a yield-abutment gate road configuration and cable support system in the Hiawatha Seam.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

THE Great War forced the peoples of the world to recognize the importance of the wise development and use of the world's natural resources. Not the least, and perhaps the most, important, is the world's fuel supply- solid, liquid, and gaseous. Without fuel our civilization would be impossible, and mankind would of necessity have to congregate in the torrid zones of the earth's surface for at least six months of every year. Of the three classes of fuels the solid ones are the most plentiful, as well as being the most widely distributed, since few countries are entirely devoid of solid fuels of one kind or another. Until a hundred years ago wood was the fuel most generally used in this country, but since then coal has supplanted wood as a fuel in all its uses, except in the outlying districts and among the farming communities. For many years the supply of coal was thought to be unlimited, but as years went by more thought and study were given to the world's coal resources, until today not only are the limits known, but in one instance at least their depletion is predicted to be almost within the age of living men, unless more provident methods are put into practice for their winning and utilization.

Un objetivo de seguridad y calidad en los moldes de la colada continua de Siderar fue la de tener un menisco estable y controlado. A lo largo de los distintos periodos de inversiones y mejoras, el control de nivel de Siderar logro como objetivo contener su variación de nivel de acero en el molde en un rango de variación menor a +/-2 mm y con una velocidad de cambio inferior a 1,5 m/segundos. Esta etapa trajo una relativa mejora en los aspectos mencionados (calidad y continuidad operativa) pero el hecho de tener como sistema de medición de nivel un sistema radiactivo (fuente Co60 y contador de centelleo) mantenía serias limitaciones en ambos rubros dado que este sistema no diferencia la interface escoria /polvo colador con el menisco de acero. Este trabajo tratará de mostrar y contar las tareas de desarrollo y aplicación de esta nueva tecnología, hoy vigente en la nueva Colada Continua N° 2 (CCD2) y en etapa de puesta en marcha de la CCD1.

Heavy earth-moving machineries used in open-pit mines intensively expose the drill operators to whole-body vibration and shocks and thus to musculoskeletal disorders. The roles of an individual, machine, and rock-related factors in their exposure remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study investigated their role among 39 drill operators from Indian iron ore mines. It shows that 70% of the operators were exposed to high levels of vibration, above the limit values recommended by ISO 2631-1. Multiple linear regression models showed that the whole-body vibration and shock exposures were strongly associated with operator’s age, drill machine model, rock’s hardness, uniaxial compressive strength, and density. The role of body mass index was close to significance (p = 0.08). Univariate analyses found that drill’s age, seat pad thickness, and seat backrest height were also strong predictors. These results help in identifying risky operators, materials and occupational situations, and in implementing appropriate prevention and intervention to reduce and monitor the exposures and health risk.

The performance of a rotating fixed bed reactor in recovering copper from industrial waste solutions by cementation is studied under various conditions. The rotating fixed bed is made of stacked woven steel screens to take advantage of two features of screens: the ability to present large area per unit volume and their ability to promote high turbulence. Variables studied are initial CuSO4 concentration, bed rotation speed, mesh number of the screens and bed thickness. The presence of baffles was found to increase the rate of cementation. The data were correlated by a dimensionless mass transfer correlation suitable for the design and operation of large scale cementation reactors.

In 1984, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 13,730-acre Burnt Lodge (MT-065-278) Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The WSA is located in Phillips and Valley Counties, MT, about 55 miles south of Malta adjoining the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. It is underlain by near horizontal sedimentary beds of the Hell Creek Formation, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Bearpaw Shale. No mines or prospects were found in the WSA. Bentonitic beds were examined, but are generally less than 1 ft thick and, except where exposed, are deeply buried. Kaolin-bearing sandstone in the Colgate Member of the Foxhills Sandstone was sampled and may have potential for use in structural clay products. However, remoteness and inaccessibility of the area make it unlikely that the material could be economically extracted even though some of the material is marginally useful.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. This paper describes the full-scale field load testing of three deep foundation units using the Osterberg Load Cell. The load tests were completed on three separate projects, two in Massachusetts and one in New York. The Massachusetts projects involved the load testing of two 18-inch O.D. concrete-filled steel pipe piles over water for railroad bridge reconstruction projects in Revere and Saugus/Lynn. The New York project involved the load testing of a 24-inch diameter drilled shaft socketed into sandstone on land for a building foundation in Rochester. The 18-inch O.D. piles were loaded to failure at jack pressures of 142 to 215 tons. The drilled shaft was loaded to failure at jack pressures of approximately 450 tons. The loading testing procedure is described and the results of the three tests are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of the Osterberg load cell for load testing of deep foundations are discussed.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. A variety of modeling techniques can be utilized to forecast metal production at heap leaching operations. These approaches reflect a wide range of complexity, flexibility, time to implement, cost, and accuracy. For many operators, a spreadsheet-based modeling technique is attractive since the calculations are directly accessible, models can often be developed by site staff, and the results are generally easy to extract and interpret. The authors have developed a spreadsheet-based modeling technique that provides a high degree of flexibility, while still considering detailed operating information for ore properties, leach kinetics, scaleup factors, lift height, and in-heap metal inventories. The technique involves establishing kinetic leach curves for each ore type to characterize metal extractions, followed by application of separate metal recovery curves to define the rate at which leached metals exit the heap in pregnant solution, taking into account delays due to the in-heap solution inventory. At any point in time, the difference between total metal extracted and total metal recovered is equal to the in-heap inventory of the leached metal. This modeling technique is particularly useful for larger multi-lift heaps where delays in metal recovery are appreciable due to in-heap solution holdup. The technique is also applicable to sites with multiple heaps, leach cycles, and/or metal recovery plants (e.g., carbon columns for gold; solvent extraction for copper). This paper describes the modeling technique, including input data required and methods for defining kinetic leach curves and metal recovery curves. The technique is compared against an alternative spreadsheet technique using a simplified in-heap solution inventory calculation to forecast metal production, which has proven to be effective at a number of sites.

En la actualidad, el proceso de Ore Control de Tintaya se convierte en un reto porque la naturaleza del yacimiento Metasomático de Contacto Tipo Skarn presenta una mineralización compleja a manera de pasas en una torta. En ese sentido, la cultura Sigma -que presenta poderosas herramientas estadísticas y de gestión de procesos-, logró conceptualizar el proceso de ore control e identificar y optimizar tres sub-procesos críticos: el muestreo de Blasthole, preparación y análisis de Muestras de Blasthole y el Ore Control Operativo. Por ello, el presente texto señala la optimización del oro control de Tintaya a través de la metodología Six Sigma, donde se logra mejorar el proceso desde el muestreo de blasthole hasta el envío de mineral a las plantas, se minimiza los eventos de fuga de mineral a los botaderos y con la data confiable de los blasthole, se elaboran modelos de corto plazo que permiten generar planes predecibles de minado.
