El presente texto señala las posibilidades a futuro de incrementar la producción cuprífera del Perú. Los dos países desarrollados con grandes reservas de cobre son Estados Unidos y Canadá y estos no tienen yacimientos interesantes, ya que los mismos o tienen leyes muy bajas o sus reservas no son comparables a los prospectos mineros del Perú, Chile, Panamá, etc. De otro lado, se clasifica las reservas con el precio del cobre. Los precios se determinan de acuerdo a la información de las memorias anuales de las empresas propietarjas; así como las declaraciones de los funcionarios de las empresas y de las autoridades gubernamentales en el caso de los países en desarrollo.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. PSC has been involved with the mineral sands business for several years with senior staff having in excess of 30 years global industry experience. The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which include tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, increased in 1993. The increase in the value of tripoli production was the result of an increase in total production. Special silica stone experienced an increase in unit value but decrease in the quantity produced. Garnet showed a 19 % decrease in quantity and an 8 % decrease in value. Staurolite increased about 51 % in the quantity produced and 136 % in value compared with those of 1992. Staurolite's significant increase in value of production resulted from a 56 % increase in the unit value. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed an 8 % decrease in the quantity produced and a 13 % decrease in the value of production. The silicon carbide industry saw an 11 % decrease in the quantity produced and an 8 % decrease in the value of production. Combined, the industries decreased 9 % in quantity and 11 % in value compared with those of 1992.

The author attempted to concurrently apply the US Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and the Australian VALMIN Code to a complex mineral property appraisal assignment. This led the author into many severe difficulties. These difficulties included the high standards needed in the work of others, and information and statements needed from the client. The exercise also highlighted many positive features of both documents. Some conflicts were found between the two documents. Implications and thoughts regarding the development of a set of US minerals appraisal standards are discussed.

THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

This paper explores the impact of the significant difference between the number of geochemical assays conducted for grade estimation and the number of comminution tests performed for throughput and performance forecasting. Both grade and throughput are key factors in determining the project. We analysed 154 feasibility study reports to assess the impact of sample frequency for comminution test work on project revenue. This disparity in size between assay and comminution data arises because geological and resource-grade risks cannot be managed without extensive geochemical testing, whereas comminution risks are traditionally mitigated through design methods and the use of contingencies. This approach is partly due to the relatively high cost and large sample requirements associated with traditional comminution tests. Our analysis demonstrates that insufficient comminution sampling and testing leads to uncertainties in throughput forecasts, creating significant financial risks. Data from the feasibility studies show that a 1% change in mill throughput can result in up to a 5% variation in Net Present Value (NPV), underscoring the sensitivity of project economics to operational performance. Building on previous work, we reference studies that reveal how low frequency of comminution testing can increase uncertainty in mill throughput forecasts and increase financial risks. We propose an approach that optimises the number of comminution samples tested to enhance forecast accuracy and reduce NPV variance. By adopting this approach, mining projects can improve financial reliability and mitigate risks associated with underperformance in SAG and AG mill-based operations.

More than 700,000 feet of diamond drilling was completed in the Blind River area between 1953 and 1958. Much of this drilling was at depths which are still not usual in North America. However, as the tendency is to deeper holes, factual data from the Blind River operation may well provide information of value in future programs. Rates of drilling decreased with in-creasing depth, but uncommonly good rates (an average of over 50 feet per day over more than 4,000 feet of hole) were achieved with proper engineering and care. Costs varied as contractors and geologists became familiar with the area Hole deviation in the Blind River area was locally severe and control of the hole trace became a major problem. Careful surveying was necessary and found to be highly re-liable. It was found that control of the hole trace above 1,500 feet was much more difficult than at depths below 1,500 feet. El presente texto revisa algunos aspectos del programa de salud ocupacional en las compañías mineras aplicados en el ambiente de trabajo, la explotación de minas y el desarrollo de su control. Primeramente, se describe los riesgos encontrados en las condiciones de trabajo como la composición química del ambiente, la inhalación de polvo y gases en el aire del subsuelo. Como segundo punto, refiere las condiciones de seguridad de la mina, donde se sugiere que el personal de seguridad sea el más idóneo para la dirección del programa de seguridad. Para ello, es importante su capacitación en técnicas de evaluación y control, así como la participación de los médicos de la compañía. Por último, se mencionan algunas medidas de control en las minas, tales como el uso de equipos detectores de gases que determinen los contaminantes sólidos y gaseosos, la compra de un equipo detector de Cu, lámpara de seguridad y la instalación de un equipo de laboratorio químico adecuado,etc.

Conscientes de la importancia de esta actividad, el presente ensayo se enfoca en identificar problemas críticos que, en la actualidad, afectan a los proyectos de exploración minera, principalmente a nivel de cronograma, y que restan competitividad a nuestro país. Este trabajo visibiliza cómo los titulares mineros pueden llegar a tener cronogramas de hasta de 2 a más años para poder iniciar exploración y la importancia de atender a este problema a través de soluciones regulatorias y de gestión en los distintos niveles y de forma transversal con otros sectores.

"En 1953, se habilita la nueva planta de flotación de cobre en Paragsha, donde el funcionamiento de las soleras tipo Lorain y la producción del mineral pirita lograron buenos resultados. Empero las nuevas condiciones de proceso, limitaron su funcionamiento y costo. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del trabajo se basa en la construcción de una solera de mayor rendimiento y menor costo, modificando su diseño al de una honda contínua. El primer juego de este diseño fue instalado en el molino de cobre Nº 1, sin aún obtener el dato final sobre su rendimiento. Posteriormente se consideró la solera AMSCO, dado que el diseño fue más eficiente y el costo final por tonelada fue menor. Sin embargo, se encontró que el contorno del valle era muy cerrado y las bolas N°4 se alojaban de modo ajustado, formando una solera muy gruesa. En consecuencia, se construyó otro diseño denominada ""Solera de onda abierta contínua"", el cual fue instalado en el molino de cobre N°7, donde la capacidad de molienda es igual de óptima y los costos son menores. Así, se pensó que la solera de una sola honda, es mejor que la de onda contínua puesto que este diseño tiene una sola honda en el centro de cada plancha de la solera. Luego, se diseño un tercer diseño, donde el promedio de vida era mejor. Por ello, de los tres diseños a seleccionar -la solera Lorain con 10 hondas, la solera de una honda con 20 hondas y la solera de honda continua de 30 hondas -, la última demostró ser la más eficiente. De otro lado, se probaron otros diseños de honda contínua con distintas aleaciones como el ""Nihard"", cuyo promedio de vida es entre 14 y15 meses aproximadamente, con el tonelaje actual de aproximadamente 270 000. Concluyendo que la experiencia anterior con solerasNihard en molinos a rodillos de 4 pies de diámetro, el impacto es mayor, obteniéndose en quebrantamiento de soleras a 3/4 grosor, pero que pese a esto, resulta ser superior a cualquier otra solera usada actualmente y en eñ que Paragsha esté 100% con soleras de molinos Nihard, a excepción de las rejillas dada su fragilidad. "

The recovery of gold from sands and gravels is one of the oldest forms of mining; it antedates history and has been practiced by savage peoples. In North America the search for placer gold has been a powerful agency in the exploration and development of unknown regions and has profoundly influenced the course of our civilization. With the progress of invention, the improvements in machinery, and the availability of large capital for the conduct of great operations, the tendency in placer, as in many other branches of mining, has been toward the working of extensive but comparatively low-grade deposits. The early miner washed the rich spots in stream beds or terraces with his pan, his long tom, and his primitive sluice. Then followed the growth of hydraulic mining and the use of giants supplied with water under pressures of hundreds of pounds to the square inch that could work at a profit gravels whose gold tenor was less than 3 cents to the cubic yard. Finally came the dredge that could handle deposits lying so far below water level as to be beyond attack by other methods. Although the gold dredge was first successful on a commercial scale in New Zealand, it has reached its present strength and efficiency in this country and its development is a monument to the daring, per- severance and technical skill of the many men, mine owners and engineers who have each contributed something to the final result. The Bureau of Mines, authorized to conduct investigations for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the mineral industries, had its attention called some years ago to the need of a comprehensive report on gold dredging in the United States. The director of the bureau recognized that such a report should summarize the development of the gold dredge, should describe in detail the essential features of present-day dredges, should discuss the facts that determine whether a placer deposit can be profitably dredged, and should point out the approved methods of prospecting placer ground and of operating dredges. At the request of the director, the author undertook the preparation of such a report and has been intermittently engaged on the task for several years. This bulletin is the outcome of his labors. He hopes that it will prove of interest to designers and builders of dredges, to mining engineers, and to persons who may contemplate investing capital in placer-mining ventures.

In October, the Aluminum Company of America restarted the fourth of seven pot-lines at its Point Comfort, Tex. primary aluminum smelter. The price of primary aluminum ingot, as quoted by American Metal Market, was increased from a range of 60.5 to 63.0 cents per pound at the end of September to a range of 66.0 to 66.5 cents per pound at the end of October. BERYLLIUM On October 15, Brush Wellman, Inc., of Cleveland, one of two U.S. producers of primary beryllium products, announced a planned $6 million expansion of its extraction plant at Delta, Utah, increasing the plant?s capacity to extract beryllium from bertrandite ore by 25%. Another $5 million will be spent on two mine expansion programs in Jaub and Millard Counties, Utah. Other mineral claims and 1 eases he 1 d by The Anaconda Company will be taken over by Brush Wellman through lease or purchase. This expansion, when completed in 1981, will decrease U.S. dependence on imported beryl ore.

So far, a large number of algorithms have been developed for the optimization of pit limits, most of which follow deterministic rules. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced, which follows a probabilistic logic using the Markov chain process. The algorithm is implemented on a transition matrix that corresponds to the 2D conventional economic block model of the mining area. The probability of mining a block is proportional to the desirability it may provide. Applying this algorithm, the probability of mining each block is obtained, and finally, the optimum pit limits are defined as the pit, which provides the highest probability of mining. In order to validate the proposed model, a numerical example is given and the results of the algorithm are compared to those of a dynamic programming algorithm. A 2D analysis of the problem is discussed in this paper. Although dealing with 3D problems requires larger size matrices, the optimization method is the same and the algorithm does not need any smoothing.

"INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to obtain information concerning the effects of boron in steel and its method of addition, so that boron, which is readily obtainable domestically, may be used to relieve the great demand for those scarce, strategic, alloying elements that hitherto have been considered necessary for the successful manufacture of quality steel.Previous Work Guillet 4/ seems to have been the first to predict that boron-bearing steel might have a possible industrial use when, in 1907, he published results of an investigation into the properties of steel containing 0.21 to 1.51 percent boron.Possibly Walter 2/ was the first to appreciate the fact that extremely small percentages of boron are effective in improving the properties of a steel. His patent, issued in 1924 claimed steels containing boron within the limits of 0.001 to 0.100 percent; furthermore, the specifications disclosed that boron increased the hardenability of steel and refined its grain structure. In 1937, Naton and Piwowarsky 6/ otherwise observed that boron increased the hardenablity of steel."

"The Red Dog Mine has increased mill throughput for most years since startup. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Late in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifylng the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, twentyone (21) Outokumpu OK50 mechanical flotation cells and four (4) 3.66m dia. column cells will be added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment and power issues and has a total budget of $US105 M. Startup of equipment will be phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and is expected to be complete by the end of Q3-2001.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the arctic circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred (100) days of open seas. Typical of sedimentary exhalative deposits, the metallurgy proved to be challenging and coupled with many mechanical shortcomings, the initial few years were very difficult. The start-up issues were slowly resolved and in 1998, a major grinding expansion, the PRI (Production Rate Increase) project, was completed. The project was designed to allow a 40% increase over the 1995 throughput. In 2000 mill throughput was 3,050,000 tonnes to produce a total of 960,000 and 140,000 dry tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates respectively, making Red Dog the largest zinc concentrate producer in the world. To address a shortage of flotation capacity remaining from the PRI grinding expansion, a project designated as the VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project was initiated. The mill optimization project is targeted to produce 1,100,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate at 56% zinc grade and 87% zinc recovery. The project will add twenty-one (21) Outokumpu OK50 (50m3) flotation cells, four (4) 3.66mO column cells and address water treatment, thickening and power generation capacities."

In November 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines sponsored a 2-day conference to stimulate thinking and discussion about changing materials technologies and implications for the Government's materials information programs. On the first day of the conference, speakers provided overviews of developments occurring in each of the major materials groups. Emerging technological developments, applications, economic and national defense significance, intermaterial competition, and potential market growth in advanced plastics, polymer composites, ceramics, metals, and electronic materials were described. In general, the speakers forecast advanced materials market growth rates in excess of overall gross national product (GNP) though high costs will tend to limit growth outside of aerospace, defense, electronics, medical equipment, and other typically high value-added businesses. On the second day, a wide range of speakers representing several facets of the materials community described how advances in materials technology are creating a need for new types of data, statistics, information, and analysis. Reflecting the speakers' broad range of organizational, professional, and personal perspectives, an array of information needs was identified. Most requirements, however, seemed to fall into one of five major categories: Federal materials research activities, material standards, market and economic information, health and safety, and public policy.
