The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen. It is not reasonable to come to firm conclusions about the origin of such a complex area as Broken Hill on such inadequate data, despite den Tex's claim (p. 87, lines 22 and 23) that "a thorough investigation of the quartz-fabric of the wall rock was undertaken".Den Tex's interpretation of each diagram is open to criticism, and alternative (and to my mind, preferable) interpretations may be made. Colloidal interactions play a critical role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering, and tailings management. Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, heterocoagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes recent advances in developing the-state-of-the-art techniques and novel methods of measuring colloidal forces, including atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, zeta potential distribution measurement, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and our recently developed integrated dynamic force apparatus. The basic principle of each technique was introduced first, followed by a summary of critical information derived for the relevant mineral processing systems. Finally, the pros and cons of each technique were discussed to emphasize the use of complementary techniques that assist in solving fundamental problems in mineral processing.

The fundamental chemistry of zinc smelting, especially that part dealing with the chemical reduction of the zinc-oxide content of a roasted zinc ore, has been discussed by metallurgists in some detail, but, in the light of present knowledge, unsatisfactorily. A considerable portion of the information available has been qualitative, or quantitative in a sense that could not be interpreted chemically. A number of attempts to elucidate the physical chemistry of zinc oxide reduction have been based upon unsubstantiated and, as is now known, incorrect equilibrium data. To write upon the chemistry of zinc smelting at this time, when electrolytic methods for the production of zinc metal from ore are becoming increasingly widespread, may seem a belated effort. So, for example, C. A. Hansen,3 in the communicated discussion of an article by the author,4 writes as follows:

Stope back conditions in the cut-and-fill stopes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited often deteriorate to such an extent that, because conventional rockbolts are not able to maintain safe working conditions, square-set timber is installed. An attempt to eliminate this costly procedure has involved the use of long grouted rockbolts using high tensile prestressing wire. These bolts were developed in conjunction with the prestressing engineers of BBR (Aust.). This form of support has improved the back conditions, maintained safe working conditions, and delayed the introduction of timber in a number of stopes.Production from these stopes has been maintained at its previous level (at a rate approximately double that of a comparable timber stope).

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, sulphur, SO2, off-gas, Zimplats Zimplats embarked on an off-gas sampling campaign in December 2009 to characterise the concentration of SO2 in the off-gas from their 13 MW furnace. In excess of forty isokinetic samples (US EPA Method 8) were taken over seven days. The aim of the sampling campaign was to increase the understanding of factors that influence sulphur release from sulphide concentrates in an electric furnace. Specifically, detailed monitoring was conducted over various operating conditions to evaluate: ? The relationship between SO2 and feed rate (i.e. furnace power) ? The relationship between SO2 and ingress (i.e. furnace freeboard pressure) ? The impact of concentrate bed thickness on SO2 (i.e. blacktop) ? The effect of events such as tapping and converter slag return on SO2 ? The desulphurization reactions that take place in the blacktop A model was developed to predict the SO2 content in furnace off-gas for a particular set of operating conditions. In order to evaluate the impact of random, uncorrelated changes in concentrate composition, ingress and power (feed rate) on the SO2 content of the off-gas, a Monte Carlo approach was adopted whereby concentrate composition, power, and ingress were allowed to vary randomly around selected set-points. The model is primarily based on the release of ?labile? sulphur from the partial thermal dissociation of sulphide minerals with an over-stoichiometric sulphur content (e.g., Fe7S8 decomposition to FeS and S). The main findings of this work suggest that labile sulphur does not fully account for the measured SO2 content of the off-gas, and that limited oxidation of sulphides during melting also contributes to the SO2 content. Details of sulphide oxidation reactions in the furnace remain unclear, and it is currently not possible to provide a theoretical framework for the relationship between the extent of oxidation and variables such as temperature, gas composition, particle size, and residence time in the furnace black top. Through the use of the Monte Carlo model it was, however, possible to constrain the extent of sulphide oxidation to about 1%. This work has shown in practice what was expected in concept, that SO2 in off-gas is proportional to furnace power and ingress rate. The model that was developed consistently slightly under-predicts the quantity of SO2 generated. It also highlights that more work is required to better understand the analytical methods used to analyse for SO2 in off-gas.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the responses of a prototype smoke detector and a commercially available photoelectric smoke detector to smoke particles generated from various combustion sources. The prototype smoke detector combines optical scattering measurements with ionization chamber measurements in order to reduce/eliminate nuisance alarms due to the presence of airborne dusts or diesel exhaust particles. The commercially available smoke detector is designed for use in harsh environments where airborne dust represents a major problem due both to nuisance alarms and detector contamination. In the experiments, the responses of the two detectors were measured when exposed to smoke particles from the exhaust of a diesel engine and from a variety of fire sources, including wood, coal, styrene butadiene rubber, and No. 2 diesel fuel. For the solid fuels, data were obtained for both smoldering and flaming combustion. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results as they apply to early-warning fire sensors capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by either airborne dust or the products produced from diesel engines. Subsequent to these laboratory experiments, six smoke detectors were installed in an underground limestone mine for further testing and evaluation. In order to appreciate fully the place of palaeontology within the general framework of the geological sciences, consideration must be given to the time, about 150 years ago, just before the study of fossils was beginning to be applied to geological problems. At theend of the eighteenth century, almost all geologists recognised that fossils were the remains of animals and plants that had lived at the time when the rocks in which they occur were formed. It was also realized that many-some geologists thought all-rocks hadbeen formed under water, but as regards the order of succession in which these rocks had originated, and the relative ages of rocks found in different parts of the world or even of one country, only the haziest and most contradictory ideas existed.Around the turn from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, a widely taught system of theories was that of the German professor, Abraham Gottlob Werner, who believed that the surface of the earth had once been covered by a universal ocean at whose bottom all rocks had been deposited. As the level of this ocean gradually subsided, older rocks-so Werner taught-are now generally found in the mountains or at great depth below the younger rocks; this was his "Primitive Division" which included granite, gneiss, schists, slates, basalt, porphyry and other igneous and metamorphic rocks, all of which he believed to be of sedimentary origin. Younger rocks, according to Werner, were formed at successively lower levels as the water receded. Next in age he placed a "Transition System" of limestones and greywackes; still younger the so-called "Floetz Division," which included sandstone, limestone, gypsum, salt, coal, but also some basalt, porphyry and other rocks; youngest were the alluvial deposits of recent clays, loams, sands and gravel. Thus, in the Wernerian system the age of a rock was determined on the basis of its petrographic properties and the height of its occurrence relative to sea-level.Here and there these ideas survived well into the nineteenth century. As late as 1825, Charles Darwin listened to lectures by Professor Jamieson, one of the last proponents of Wernerian theories in England. The fact that entirely different kinds of fossils occurredin rocks which were regarded as contemporaneous did not worry the theoreticians.It is, therefore, noteworthy and significant that the value of fossils for the interpretation of geological events was demonstrated to the geologists by an engineer and surveyor, WiIIiam Smith, who, although no professional geologist, has often been called the "Father of English Geology." His professional work, which was mainly concerned with drainage and irrigation projects, took Smith to all parts of England, where he sometimes journeyed as much as 10,000 miles in 11 year. Smith was a keen observer and, unhampered by theoretical speculations, he noted the occurrence of fossils and collected specimens wherever he went. ABSTRACT: Ground stresses are one of the significant factors in the context of rockbursts and underground instability at some hard rock mines in Canada. Overcoring strain relief measurements using triaxiaI strain eel is were performed at depths between 60 to 1890 m at several mine sites to provide stress data for stability analysis and optimum mine design. Pre-mining ground stress determinations from 64 stress tensor analyses resulted in the following average stress gradients: Maximum horizontal stress. -Hmax - 8.18 - 0.0122 MPa/m depth Minimum horizontal stress. _-,,min - 3.64 - 0.0276 MPa/m depth Average horizontal stress. -11, 5.91 - 0.03-19 MPs m depth Vertical stress. '-, - 0.0266 - 0.008 MPa/m depth The maximum and minimum horizontal compressive stresses. with an average ratio of 1.75 ,0..45. prevail in east--west and northerly directions. respectively. Horizontal compressive stresses in excess of vertical overburden load were determined. indicating large variations in ratios to a depth of about 1000 m with decreasing trend towards depth. From present data. a particular regional zoning for the magnitude and direction of horizontal stress fields cannot be outlined. A common feature at mines with near vertical orebodies is that the maximum horizontal compressive stress acts perpendicular to strike while the minimum horizontal compressive stress is aligned on-strike. The vertical stress components approach the gravitational overburden load.

The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. Powder metallurgy has been developed rapidly in the last twenty years by overseas metallurgists. The technique of making the powders and their subsequent pressing and sintering into useful forms has' only been introduced into Australia under the stress of war-time economic conditions.The technique involved has very little in common with our usual methods of fabricating engineering alloys by melting the ingredients to a homogeneous mass, followed by casting to shape or casting to ingot form and shaping by application of pressure-so-called mechanical working. On the other hand, the technique includes operations, such as milling and sizing, familiar to the primary metallurgists.The compacting of metal or other powders finds important application in two outstanding fields of engineering production: (a) in making porous bearings and contact brushes, in which such a material as powdered graphite can be incorporated; (b) in making cutting tool tips of hard -carbides, which have a melting point too high to make casting feasible, and which would be too brittle in the cast condition in any case. In both these cases; the final article can be made of the desired shape and size (subject to shrinkage allowances) whilst the compact is in a soft and readily machined condition a consideration of great importance in connection with the hard carbides.In order to develop the necessary equipment and technique and at the same time to assisil in the war effort, it was decided to divert the research work of the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne to the problems associated with the production of hard carbides from local raw materials and the sintering of such into tips for cutting tools. Since this work was started at least two industrial concerns have started to produce these materials in the Commonwealth.The work. to date has included (a) the purification of crude cobalt oxide from Risdon and the reduction of this to metal Particles of less than 10 p. diameter; (b) the production of tungsten powder from King Island scheelite and its conversion into tungsten carbide with particle size less than 4 p. diameter; (c) the sintering of the latter product, using the former as a bond; (d) the production of titanium carbide from titanium dioxide; (e) the separation of columbium and tantalum oxides from a Northern Territory tantalite, and the conversion of these into the respective carbides.

Orange County, adjacent to the populous and industrialized Los Angeles area, is the fastest growing county in California and is second only to Los Angeles County in total population (figure 1). In addition to an equable climate and a burgeoning economy, there is room in Orange County for growth and expansion. Growth over the past decade has resulted in rapid development of industrial tracts, housing areas, and shopping and commercial centers, mostly in former agricultural areas. The value of new building in 1972 was a record amount-over I billion dollars (figure 2). Problems relating to the proper direction of growth are the concern of both government and the private sector. The intelligent and efficient use of areas to be developed requires planning for the conservation and protection of the County's natural beauty and for the orderly development of natural resources. The availability of sand and gravel, which is used in many phases of construction, will be a major controlling factor in the future of the County.

Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. This paper describes the core logging process with case examples showing how the logged data can be used for underground and open pit mine design.

Sedimentary pyrites from Tasmania have Se contents that are high for it province showing no overall Se enrichment. Sulphides from Devonian granitic rocks, and related cassiterite-sulphide deposits, Sn-Wand PbZn-Ag fissure veins have similar and relatively low Se contents, and pyrites from Devonian gold-quartz veins have very low Se contents. The high concentrations of Se at Mount Lyell are consistent with enrichment in pyritic Cu deposits in volcanic rocks elsewhere, and the dispersion of Se is consistent with a surface volcanic origin for several of the orebodies. In contrast, sulphides from Cambrian volcanic rocks and associated granitic rocks, and from the Rosebery and Hercules pyritic PbZn deposits, also believed to be of volcanic origin, are impoverished in Se.In the Mount Bischoff cassiterite-sulphide deposits there is no relationship between Se content of sulphides and temperature of formation as indicated by fluid inclusion studies, and sulphides from Devonian ores with different temperatures of formation have similar Se contents.The Se content of Tasmanian sulphides appears to be an unsatisfactory discriminant of their genesis and temperature of formation but in volcanic terrains may be a useful pathfinder for Cu concentrations.

A crosshole seismic imaging (tomography) experiment has been carried out in an underground mine in order to delineate waste rock within a massive sulphide ore body. Data comprising 1526 travel time measurements were inverted to yield a compressional wave speed image consistent with, and adding to, knowledge of the extent of the waste inclusions. An effective method of resolving travel time discrepancies measured on reversed ray paths is presented.

A unique judicial opportunity allowed measurement of the response of three cracks in residential structure to blasting for underground aggregate mining. Instrumented cracks were located in the interior basement CMU mortar and upstairs dry wall as well as exterior brickwork. The dynamic environment was unusual. Even though the blasting occurred some 490 m (1600 ft) away, excitation frequencies were unusually high and there were no apparent surface waves. In addition there was no air overpressure wave to produce secondary crack response. As is typical, long term environmental effects produced greater crack response than did the blast induced ground motions.

The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...
