"Nickel is an essential metal in stainless steel, armor plate, and nickel steels and also in nonferrous alleys, such as monel metal and cupre-nickel, which are used in marine service. Nickel is one of the metals that must be greatly restricted in civilian use to provide the amounts needed for our War program. Consequently, it is desirable to investigate every possible substitute.The 5-cent coin no z in use contains 2.3 percent nickel. At the end of 1941, about 450 tons of nickel was being consumed annually to produce these coins. If the nickel used for that purpose in 9141 had been diverted to military use, 15,000 tons of armor plate could have been produced. As nickel is vitally needed for military as well as essential civilian products, it would seem desirable to substitute some other alloy for the 25 percent nickel alloy now being used. The Bureau of Mines has been asked to suggest possible substitutes.The substitute should have physical properties similar to the alloy now being used. It should have a metallic appearance and ring and a reasonably white color, so to be distinguishable from the present 1-cent coin. It should also be reasonably resistant to corrosion."

"El siguiente texto señala las etapas que comprende el proceso electrolítico del zinc empleado en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, así como la importancia de la aplicación de este método de obtención en el 40% de la producción mundial. El tratamiento electrolítico del zinc se realiza en seis etapas: tostación, lixiviación, filtración, purificación, electrolisis, fundición y moldeo. La tostación convierte el sulfuro de zinc en óxido y depende de esta primera fase la mayor recuperación del zinc. En este proceso, el concentrado se divide en dos roasters tipo Wedge con capacidad para 60 toneladas cada una. Posteriormente este aire del concentrado, es tomado de la atmósfera y conducido a la columna central del roaater a través de una tubería con válvula y un manómetro de agua, que sirve para reguiar la presión del aire a 5.8 pulgadas. Dicha presión está calculada en función del volumen de aire necesario para la oxidación. Posteriormente la lixiviación disuelve la calcina en el electrolito gastado que sale de las celdas (155 - 73-gramos de ácido sulfúrico por litro y 55 gramos de zinc) para así eliminar impurezas tales como el fierro, arsénico y antimonio con bióxido de manganeso. La tercera etapa denominada filtración separa la materia insoluble de la solución del sulfato de zinc, a través de 6 filtros rotatorios de armadura metálica de tipo Burt de 5 pies de diámetro y 40 de largo. La purificación disminuye las impurezas como el Cu y Cd, hasta un máximo de 0.5 mg/lt, reduciendo el zinc a un polvo finísimo. Para el desarrollo de la electrólisis se utlizan tanques como celdas electrolíticas, un equipo de fuerza de dos transformadores y electrodos (anodos y cátodos), elecrolitos y reactivos. La sección de fundición y moldeo, forma los cátodos de zinc para su moldeo en barras de forma comercial, con un peso de 25 kilos cada una. En consecuencia, la factibilidad de este método radica en su simplificidad y economía, debido a la calidad de sus concentrados, como en el número(2) de purificaciones realizadas. "

The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.

Dado que en los últimos quince años se buscó mejorar el stándard de vida de la población latinoamericana, a través no solo de su economía sino de su salud propiamente dicha, es necesario que América Latina repare en el ambiente de la comunidad que vive el trabajador como los demás habitantes. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto radica en una evaluación de los riesgos del ambiente del trabajador, como en la legislación social, que suele enfatizar más en la indemnización que en la prevención del mismo. Asimismo, se revisan los 13 trabajos realizados en diversos paises de Latinoamérica, encontrándose que solo 5 tienen un programa efectivo en salud ocupacional. En este sentido, los objetivos del programa de salud ocupacional son importantes puesto que un ambiente de trabajo seguro y saludable donde los empleados cuenten con una salud óptima en la producción industrial, beneficiará a la comunidad y la industria minera, respectivamente.

Mineralogy, traditionally associated with concentrator studies, is being increasingly applied to problems in pyrometallurgy. Such investigations commonly make use of a number of techniques, and the results are combined for a meaningful interpretation, which can lead to a successful solution for the problem. Mineralogical techniques are described for various pyrometallurgical operations. Examples are given of studies and investigations involving mineralogy in chemical-looping combustion, feed monitoring to platinum-smelting furnaces, and losses to slag in base metal and platinum smelting.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. "From a technologist's point of view, there have been few fundamental 'breakthroughs' in the process of gold extraction since the turn of the century. However, the industry has made a great deal of progress in its response to the problems that have arisen: a changing demand for products, lower grade and more refractory ores, inflated labour and materials cost and the increasing control of governmental legislation. The trend in North America and South Africa to alleviate these problems has been to adopt a common policy to process larger tonnages of lowgrade ore through more efficient milling circuits. Here, however, is where the similarity ends.The purpose of this paper is to emphasise the different principles of practice employed by extraction plants in North America and South Africa to achieve the same common goal, namely gold bullion.2.0 INTRODUCTIONTwo very important aspects of extraction metallurgy for which the metallurgical engineer is responsible are plant design and plant commissioning.In North America and South Africa the importance of these aspects is due to the fact that both are related to the financial success of the project of which they form part. Good design is imperative if the capital invested in both the plant and the whole mining undertaking is to reap maximum profit. Furthermore, good design leads to a carefully planned and well executed start-up procedure resulting in bringing the plant into production on time, at designed efficiency and within budget.Due to the competent nature of the quartz pebble conglomerate and quartzite ore on the South African Witwatersrand, the characteristics of the ore type are not much different from one mine to the other. Thus a significant operating knowledge and experience has been built up over the years and there is considerably less risk in selecting a gold extraction process route."

(New York Meeting, February, 1913) This old and well-known method of determining, silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its-ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a, description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, acid because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a determination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained.

El presente texto describe la historiografía del cobre en el mundo. El cobre fue el primer metal usado ampliamente por el hombre. Posteriormente, las propiedades de resistencia de corrosión del cobre, bronce y latón hizo que estos metales permanecieran no solo como decorativos, sino como funcionales durante la Edad Media hasta nuestros días. Ya en el siglo XIX, Gran Bretaña fue el mayor productor del metal rojo. Pero nuevas minas se abrieron en EE. UU, Chile y Africa, hasta que en 1911 la producción mundial de cobre fundido excedió a un millón de tonelada por año. Con el avance de la Revolución Industrial, se descubrieron nuevos e importantes usos para el cobre, así como producir numerosas y nuevas aleaciones. Actualmente, se produce más de cinco millones de toneladas de cobre y este metal desempeña una parte vital y progresiva en muchas ramas de la tecnología moderna.

"Abstract Deep mixing method has been employed increasingly in recent years as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction. Column-type solidification, however, has been thought to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, because the shear deformation of unimproved soil between the columns cannot be reduced. In recent years, experimental results have been reported that imply that solidified columns can reduce the shear deformation of unimproved soil around them. A new arrangement has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge model tests was conducted to verify the lateral flow resistance of stabilized columns. The results indicate that stabilized columns can reduce the lateral flow of liquefied ground if the column displacement and the column head rotation are restricted. This paper concludes that it is important to restrict the displacement and the rotation of the column head by surface improvement to mitigate the lateral flow of liquefied ground.INTRODUCTIONDeep mixing method has been employed increasingly in recent years as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction. The solidified body formed by the deep mixing method is usually block or lattice shape, composed of solidified columns that overlap each other horizontally. Lattice-type solidification has been shown to be effective as a liquefaction countermeasure despite the presence of unimproved soil inside the lattice wall, because the shear deformation of the interior soil is restrained by the wall (Suzuki et al., 1989). On the other hand, it has been thought that column-type solidification cannot reduce shear deformation of unimproved soil around columns, because the displacement of a solidified column is less restricted than that of a lattice wall. Column-type solidification has been reported to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, but to be superior in terms of construction cost and applicability around existing underground structures (Koga et al., 1986). However, there are experimental results implying that solidified columns have reduced the shear deformation of unimproved soil and mitigated its liquefaction (Yasuda et al., 2003; Tanaka et al., 2003). Yamamoto et al. (2006) conducted dynamic analyses of ground improved with lattice- and column-type solidification. Their results showed that column-type solidification with an improvement ratio of more than 35% reduces excess pore water pressure generated by earthquakes. Furthermore, the new column arrangement shown in Figure 1(a) has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. It was developed and has been verified using dynamic model testing in a 1 g field (Takahashi et al., 2010a; 2010b; 2013; Towhata et al., 2010). The stabilized columns in this configuration interrupt lateral flow in any direction, unlike those placed in square and triangular arrangements."

La mayor parte de las máquinas de colada continua de palanquillas que utilizan buzas calibradas y lubricación con aceite se operan con alta velocidad de colada en secuencias largas, obteniendo alta productividad. Muchos de ellos todavía practican la inyección de aluminio en el molde, para desoxidar el acero líquido sin riesgo de obturación de las buzas. También es todavía usual la práctica de “pescar” la nata que se forma en el menisco. Las salpicaduras del chorro de cuchara contribuyen a la formación de chanchos en el repartidor, requiriendo el lanceo con oxígeno. Alternativamente, diversas plantas prefieren utilizar tubo de protección entre cuchara y repartidor y protección con gas inerte del chorro del repartidor al molde en todos los grados de acero colados con buza calibrada. Se hace una comparación entre ambas prácticas desde los puntos de vista de inversión, costo operativo, seguridad, productividad y calidad.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el secado por atomización donde se busca eliminar el agua de las pulpas espesas para producir concentrados de forma directa y así mostrar el impacto que este tiene en el manejo, permitiendo operaciones de sistemas de transportes integrados en recipientes a granel que van desde la mina a la fundición, a través de sistemas de transportes neumáticos totalmente cerrados.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1974 twelve companies operated 31 primary aluminum reduction plants, three firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States, 24%; Northern States, 33%, and other Southern States 11%. Output of primary metal in 1974 was valued at $3.4 billion. About 80% of the secondary recovery was from new aluminum base scrap and 20% was from old scrap. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1974, building accounted for about 27%; transportation 19%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 15%; and consumer durab1es, 9%.
