This paper deals with the analysis of pillar failure in a room and pillar mining operation of a deep underground coal mine. The incident here involved the failure of more than 100 pillars. The mechanism of pillar failure (bump/squeeze) has been studied in detail. The analysis consists of inmine eyewitness observations, laboratory experiments and analytical study of the pillar failure area using finite element technique. Results indicated that the mechanical properties of coal, roof and floor, geologic condition, and the method of operation have affected the mode of pillar failure. Hard roof and floor prevented roof caving and floor heaving in the gob area creating an inhomgeneous stress field on the pillar. This condition developed a yield zone and a core zone in the pillar. Progressive increase of vertical stress further increased the yield zone of the pillar and reduced the core pillar leading to a total squeeze of the pillar. However, the analysis indicated that the pillars were liable to bump provided any sudden shift of load occurred on the core pillar due to some dynamic shock imparted by a local failure of the immediate roof (slickenslided area) or during splitting.

A busca na melhoria da qualidade dos aços, principalmente no caso de aços limpos, fez com que o distribuidor de lingotamento continuo também seja empregado para a remoção das inclusões responsáveis por prejudicar as propriedades mecânicas dos aços. Uma melhor eficiência desta função do distribuidor pode ser atingida com o conhecimento das características do escoamento do banho metálico de modo que se possam propor modificações na configuração do distribuidor. Esses fenômenos de escoamento e remoção de inclusões podem ser simulados mediante a utilização da modelagem física. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar quatro configurações internas de distribuidor por meio da qualificação do escoamento via ensaio de linhas de fluxo e quantificação de inclusões passantes pelo veio com o ensaio de remoção de inclusões. As variáveis de controle utilizadas neste estudo são: velocidade de lingotamento, presença de barreiras e presença de tubo longo. Os resultados apresentados para o distribuidor em questão mostram que para os casos com o tubo longo, o uso da barreira torna o escoamento predominantemente ascendente eliminando o curto-circuito e favorável a remoção de inclusões passando de 29,76 para 24,29% de inclusões passantes pelo veio. Enquanto que para os casos sem tubo longo, o uso da barreira proposta diminuiu o contato do aço com a escória sobrenadante, aumentou o curto-circuito e aumentou também o percentual de inclusões passantes pelo veio de 2,56 para 3,01%.

A comprehensive instrumentation program was implemented at the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island, NY during proximate underwater rock blasting in 2014. Forty-two blasts took place over a 4-week period to deepen the 1200-ft (366 m) Berth 3 from -45 ft (-14 m) to -50 ft (-15 m) MLW to accommodate Post-Panamax vessels. Approximately 86,000 yd3 (65,752 m3) were blasted 120 to 9 ft (37 to 2.7 m) from the wharf to a total depth of -57 ft (-17.4 m). Pre-blast planning included developing and implementing a comprehensive monitoring plan and setting vibration and strain limits to protect the wharf. The plan outlined methods to measure vibrations on five corners of four concrete deck sections, on five concrete-filled pipe piles just below the pile cap near deck corners, and in bedrock adjacent to pile sockets. Water overpressures were measured near instrumented piles for 19 blasts closest to the wharf. A total of 19 geophones were secured to the wharf structure and buried 12 ft (3.7 m) in drilled holes.

Flotation’s earliest patent was issued in 1860. However, the process was first applied commercially in Australia until 1904, and in Montana in 1911. Major advances followed both in reagent treatment and in cell design, with resulting process improvements. Mechanical cells have seen the widest use and with the major increases in plant capacities (Fig. 1) their volumes have also increased (Fig. 2). In 1991, the principal use for the process was to produce copper concentrates for smelting. It was applied to 243 Mt (268 million st) of copper ore. The total of all ores floated that year was 426 Mt (470million st). In 1997, US mines produced 257 Mt (284 million st) of copper ores for flotation, yielding1.75 Mt (1.94 million st) of copper.

"VIBRONICS, INC. instrumented and monitored a residential structure for response to,blasting at aMidwestern surface coal operation. The residence was owned by the mining company and was extremely close to the operation. Blasting was conducted within 120 feet (36.5 meters) of the test structure. Up to seventeen (17), four (4)-channel seismographs were used during the monitoring period. The basement walls and floor were monitored. VIBRONICS, INC. also monitored a brick chimney in the basement and attic. Structural responses were then compared to outside vibration measurements taken in the soil near the foundation."

Em projetos de grande porte, temos muitos fornecedores de equipamentos mecânicos com diversas formas de contratação e estabelecer um padrão único para o sistema de automação, tornase uma atividade complexa, porém, fundamental para o sucesso do projeto. Por outro lado, o sistema de controle é sempre o último a ser montado e pode provocar atrasos no comissionamento dos equipamentos, se não estiver devidamente pronto, ou mesmo ser pressionado para compensar atrasos ocorridos nas etapas anteriores da construção. Nesse contexto, a engenharia de automação precisa estar concluída, os materiais precisam estar disponíveis e a mão de obra pronta para atendimento no exato momento das necessidades. Mediante o uso de uma estratégia de contratação antecipada do pacote de automação, na modalidade MAC, onde apenas uma empresa responde pelo fornecimento global do sistema de automação e instrumentação, reduzindo as interfaces envolvidas, buscando a participação do fornecedor nas fases iniciais da engenharia e com a elaboração de um planejamento consistente de recursos, foi possível atender as demandas da construção e comissionamento, dentro do cronograma e custo previstos para o projeto. Os resultados alcançados pela disciplina de automação e controle, aliados ao resultado global do projeto, sinalizam a assertividade das ações realizadas, trazendo benefícios consideráveis e reduzindo o risco na implementação do projeto P4P.

Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

This thermomechanical analysis used the finite element method to investigate the behavior of crushed salt backfill in a waste disposal room situated in a salt dome repository. The first of two objectives was to determine the transient temperature rise and degree of thermomechanical consolidation that occur in the backfill as a function of drillhole depths. The second objective involved the evaluation of closure due to salt creep of unlined emplacement drillholes and the determination of pressure on steel sleeve liners in the drillholes should liners become necessary for canister retrieval. The retrievability period was considered to extend for 25 years after waste emplacement. The canisters were assumed to contain ten-year old high level waste with a thermal output of 4.3 kW at the time of emplacement.

Laboratory model test results for the ultimate uplift capacity of square and circular foundations in saturated clay (ø=0) have been presented. The results of the present model tests for square foundations have been compared with the previously published laboratory model tests results on circular foundations. Based on the comparison, it appears that the critical embedment ratio of square and circular foundations increases from about 3 for soft clays to about 7 for medium to stiff clays. By using the experimental results, an empirical procedure has been suggested for determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of belled pier foundations in saturated clay.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. "INTRODUCTIONTeck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine is located 35 Km east of Marathon, Ontario. In conjunction with its 1000 tonne per day gold concentrator, the company operates an effluent treatment plant for the treatment of mill, mine and site effluents prior to environmental discharge. This paper provides a brief overview of treatment strategies and methods, employed to detoxify final effluent.WATER MANAGEMENTThe tailings impoundment basin, located 3 Km south of the plant site, provides storage capacity for all process effluents and site run-off. Basin supernatant (reclaim water) is recirculated to the plant for reuse as process water, in order to minimize fresh water consumption. As site run-off and limited fresh water intake exceed natural losses due to evaporation, reclaim water in excess of process requirements is passed through the effluent treatment (ET) facility to control tailings basin level by providing regulated discharge of environmentally acceptable effluent. (Figure 1)PASSIVE TREATMENTTo reduce treatment costs and burden on the ET facility, reclaim water is fed to the plant to take maximum advantage of natural destruction processes occurring in the tailings basin.These include: volatilizationphotodecompositionbiological oxidation and precipitationstorm water dilutionConcentrator recovery techniques (Figure 2) are directed toward maximizing gold recovery while limiting the addition and extraction of contaminants requiring disposal and eventual treatment.Currently ore ground to 90% -200 mesh is pre-aerated at pH 9.0 with lime for 18 hours prior to 30 hours cyanidation at pH 9.5 with low cyanide ion excess (70 ppm).Pre-aeration passivates cyanicides prior to cyanide contact. This reduces cyanide consumption and the formation of cyanide complexes. In conjunction with recovery requirements low pH is maintained to retard the dissolution of stibnite into its antimony and sulfide components."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of the land in south-central Alaska for exploration and mineral development of locatable minerals under State or Federal laws. The land ownership for an area of nearly 72.5 million acres in south-central Alaska was divided into 3 availability categories and 15 subcategories. In July 1985, 31.0 million acres of the study area were available for mineral exploration and development, 6.2 million acres were available with restrictions, and 35.3 million acres were unavailable. About 23.6 million acres in the study area are underlain by mineral terranes. About 9.9 million of the 23.6 million acres are available for mineral entry, 2.4 million acres are available with restrictions, and 11.3 million acres are unavailable. While much of the land currently classified as unavailable will be reclassified once it is conveyed to the State or to Native corporations, about 22% of the unavailable lands underlain by mineral terranes are now Federal parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, wild and scenic rivers, and military lands, all of which are considered permanently unavailable for mineral exploration and development.

The Western Mining Training and Translation Center is a consortium of four universities devoted to developing educational and training projects to reduce the incidence/accident rates in the mining industry. The center consists of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Utah. It is fully funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The center manages 15 educational projects and one translation project. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) for Small Mines is an educational project managed by the University of Utah. The objectives of this project are to identify critical mine hazards, assess risks; outline procedures to reduce accident/incident rates in small mines in the western United States and to train mine workers and super-visors on HIRA in each participating mine. To accomplish these objectives, the HIRA personnel visited 15 small mines in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and California. At these mines, most operators were employing independent contractors to perform several tasks ranging from drilling, blasting and mucking of rock at the work site to hauling ore to a processing plant. The operation of diesel-powered equipment was one of the major tasks performed by the contractors. This article presents three case studies in which contract workers performed a number of tasks with no reportable incidents but did so unsafely. It also highlights the training received by most contractors, the constraints imposed upon them and the safety hazards to which they are exposed most frequently.

The Autogenous Fine Grinding Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill The marginal improvements which continue to be made to fine grinding practices have exposed the limits of conventional technologies and highlighted the need for a radically new approach. The patented autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill design consists of a rotating spherical grinding chamber, which shares the same spherical centre as the shaft-mounted counter-rotating disc assembly. The axis of the disc assembly can be inclined to the axis of the spherical grinding chamber by pivoting the disc shaft about the common spherical centre. The inter-particle energy transfer required for breakage results from particle velocity differentials created by the discs intercepting the rotating mass. Particle size reduction is concentrated in high shear zones, which envelop the outer surface and periphery of the discs. This paper traces the development of the KAD Mill from pilot to commercial scale. Pilot work covers a range of minerals including magnetite, calcite, dolomite, barite, limestone and talc. Test results include open and closed circuit operation in wet and dry modes. Conventional milling constraints and energy consumption issues are addressed while new dimensions are added to the feed size range acceptable for wet and dry grinding to fine and ultra-fine sizes.

"The ninth yearly National Safety Competition covering the calendar year 1933, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, w participated in by 332 mines and quarries situated in 35 States. Enrollment represented as increase of 10 plants over 1932, and one addition was made to the number of States represented.The primary purpose of the United. States Bureau of Mines in conducting the contest is to promote safety in United States mineral industries. This purpose is accomplished directly through the efforts of the competing companies and their employees to win first place in the competition and thereupon receive recognition on a national scale for their achievement the purpose is accomplished indirectly through studies by the United States Bureau of Mines of the facts contained in the accident reports the competing companies furnish to enable the Bureau to compute the accident rates that are the basis for determining the winners of the contest.The statistics which constitute the basis for determining the winning companies and the relative standing of all companies are prepared uniformly without regard to the States in which the companies operate, or to differences in classes of accidents covered by State laws relating to compensation for injuries resulting, from industrial accidents.Bronze trophies, known as 'Sentinels of Safety', which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines, were presented to five companies in the contest of 1933, each company having established the best accident-prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided, namely, anthracite-mining companies, bituminous-coal-mining companies, metal-mining companies, operators of nonmetallic-mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or opencut mines. The trophies are awarded for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The trophy for bituincus-coal mines was won by a company in Wyoming. A company in Tennessee won the trophy for metal mining. In the nonmetal-mine group the trophy was again won by a company in New York. A quarry in Michigan won the trophy for the quarry-and-opencut-mine group. The trophy for anthracite mines remains in Pennsylvania, as all anthracite mines in the contest are in that State."

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. "INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Introduction The ore mining industry has been successful because of technological progress and huge sums of capital investment. But new technology and plants have not come cheap. The problem now is companies will run out of money before they run out of ideas. Survival Strategies Industry survival strategies demand restructuring and new plans. Inland's prescription for the future includes: • Continued emphasis on technological improvements to upgrade pellet quality and lower costs; • Effective use of human resources resulting in employee satisfaction and improved planning and productivity; • Deliberate, well planned, and documented cost-control programs for the short- and long-term; and • Capital investments to support the first three initiatives. Technology Technological changes are not only required by the need for operational improvements, but by product quality improvement dictated by the user - usually the blast furnace operator. Established ambient measurements of pellet quality, such as tumble index, compression strength, porosity, size distribution, and chemical composition, are no longer considered meaningful in predicting pellet performance in a blast furnace. New specifications, called low temperature and intermediate temperature properties, have been recently introduced. Low temperature specifications are characterized by disintegration of pellets in the 500°C (930°F) range in the upper portion of the granular zone during the hematite-to-magnetite transformation in blast furnace stack. Intermediate temperature properties (measured by 1000°C or 1800°F) are characterized by swelling, reducibility, and compression strength after reduction, reflecting conditions in the lower portion of the granular zone of the furnace. These new parameters are being used for pellet quality evaluation at Inland, and will be introduced at its Minorca mine for more routine analysis and correlation with the pellet furnace operation. With increased emphasis on quality, effective communication between the blast furnace operator, research, and the pellet plant operator is critical. At Inland, this is accomplished through technical meetings where the opportunity is provided to solve problems, establish a common understanding on the value of quality, and develop future quality standards and programs. With the degree of sophistication in determining pellet quality as it affects blast furnace operation, the future pellet plant operator will actually be producing a custom pellet. Human Resources Technological change has been a strong point at Inland, and will continue to be. However, human resource management is equally important. Is management giving sufficient attention to employee motivation and involvement? It is a way to improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance employee job satisfaction. The industry is beginning to understand the principles and the potential for tapping employee brainpower. The payoff can be handsome. Management has to be willing to share both information and power if participative management is to live up to its potential. It has to become more flexible and be willing to adapt to change on the human side. Management should embrace rather than fear employee involvement. Given time, joint problem solving will replace adversarial attitudes and pay dividends for both sides. Productivity and product quality will improve and new dimensions of employee job satisfaction will be achieved. But, it will not happen overnight. Attitudinal change must permeate the organization from top to bottom. This change is needed to support the working relationships and give everyone a sense of direct and meaningful involvement.
