Back injuries account for a high proportion of lost workdays in the mining industry and are a leading cause of disability in mine workers. Two risk factors for low back injuries are manual lifting and whole-body vibration exposure when operating mobile equipment. Recent research has shed light on possible mechanisms through which low back injuries may occur, and the results of these studies can be used to improve the design of lifting tasks and seats to decrease injury risk. This article discusses recent research results and how this knowledge can be leveraged to reduce the risk of low back pain.

El presente trabajo señala las bases que fundamentan la aplicación de los Sistemas de Gestión Integrados y se ofrecen argumentos que sustentan los mecanismos usados para integrar los sistemas de Seguridad (NOSA), medio ambiente (ISO 14001) y calidad (ISO 9001); y la necesidad de su uso como herramienta de gestión por parte de la organización, llegando a todos los niveles hasta alcanzar la madurez del Sistema. Asímismo, se describen algunos ejemplos del impacto positivo, que ha significado la implementación de este Sistema en la unidad de producción Uchucchacua (cuarta productora mundial de Plata,), desde el inicio del Proyecto, hasta lograr la revalidación de la Certificación de las normas ISO 14001, y la cercana certificación en OHSAS 18001 e ISO 9001.

An effective electrowinning process in hydrometallurgical industry requires fluoride levels in the base metal solution to be less than 10 mg/l. Selective removal of the fluoride ions from base solution is thus desired, if fluoride was added to control calcium and magnesium in the circuit. Consequently, adsorption of fluoride onto activated alumina was studied in a batch and a column set-up. The effects of base metal solution pH, temperature, initial concentration and flow rate on activated alumina performance were investigated in either a batch or column configuration. A two-level factorial experimental design was implemented in studying column dynamics. Results demonstrate that activated alumina is an effective adsorbent for selective removal of fluoride from base solution. In the batch operation, fluoride was removed to values below the maximum allowable concentration (10 mg/[l]) when pH was = 8. In the column adsorption step at 55°C and 600mg/[l] initial concentration, up to 16 bed volumes were processed before breakthrough level was reached. Desorption step using 1% sodium hydroxide solution achieved an elution of 8 bed volumes. The activated alumina (AA) had a capacity of 8.65 gF/[l]AA at the 10mgF/[l] fluoride breakthrough level during the column adsorption test. Five watersheds, ranging in size from 29 to 49 acres, were selected in East-Central Ohio to investigate the hydrologic and water quality conditions occurring before, during, and after surface mining. Four of the watersheds will undergo surface mining, involving either the Number 6, 9, 11, or 8 coal seams, and one watershed having an outcrop of the Number 6 coal will be operated as a control watershed. To determine the premining hydrologic and water quality conditions (Phase 1), physical information was obtained for each watershed and instrumentation was installed for obtaining hydrologic data and water quality samples. In addition to topographic maps, soils and vegetation maps were prepared. Stratigraphic columns were developed from geologic cores; networks of observation wells and of soil moisture access tubes were installed; and weather stations were established to measure temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation, and to collect precipi¬tation samples. Field data were collected over a 10-month period for one watershed and for about 8 months on another watershed before surface mining began. The other watersheds continued in the premining data phase. These data were for precipitation, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, snow and frozen soil, soil moisture, infiltration (rainfall simulator), spring discharge, runoff from watersheds, and ground-water levels. Also, samples of runoff and ground water were obtained for chemical analyses and additional samples of runoff were acquired for suspended sediment load determinations. Over the study period, precipitation was not very representative of the long term averages, but data are available from the control watershed for a representative 7 year period which should prove invaluable in modeling the hydrology of the project watersheds for the premined conditions. Spring discharges (before mining) from the upper aquifer of two of the watersheds averaged only 508 and 652 gallons daily. The proportion of precipitation occurring as surface runoff from the large watersheds ranged from 8 to 36 percent and the peak discharges from 5.86 to 81.95 cfs. Base-flow and runoff water samples from four of the watersheds (unmined conditions) were collected and analyzed quantitatively for 39 water quality parameters. Monthly precipitation samples sediment fractions of the base flow and runoff were analyzed for 22 and 17 parameters, respectively. The average concentrations of the water quality parameters for the watersheds (unmined), except for suspended solids, were as low or lower than the EPA recommended maximum allowable concentrations in drinking water. Several parameters in precipitation equaled or exceeded the levels of corresponding parameters in runoff water. The average concentration of suspended solids in storm runoff ranged from 118 to 1110 mg/l, and for base flow the range was from 44 to 247 mg/l; the higher concentrations were associated with the watersheds exhibiting the greatest disturbance. Iron ranged from an average of less than 3 µg/1 to 228 µg/1. Manganese ranged from less than 41 µg/1 to 334 µg/I. Ground-water systems (unmined condition) are described for the five project watersheds. Each watershed was found to have two major perched aquifers within the top 250 feet. Generally, these perched aquifers involve local flow systems, though flow across watershed boundaries in some areas. Recharge is mostly from local precipitation and discharge is mostly as spring flow, base flow, evapotranspiration, and leakage through the underlying confining bed. Shallow ground water was commonly of the calcium bicarbonate type. Although dissolved-solids concentration was generally 200 to 600 mg/1, brackish or salty ground water was present in several areas. A composite hydrologic model for the project watersheds will consist of separate ground-water, unsaturated flow, overland flow, and evapotranspiration component models. The ground-water model (a modified quasi-three--dimensional U. S. Geological Survey model) operates on a grid network and the newly formulated unsaturated flow model was divided into overlying prismatic elements for numerical solutions. The unsaturated flow model includes provision for incorporating the evapotranspiration model. An available distributed kinemetic overland flow model was utilized. An analyses was made of one of the costs of reclaiming coal mines; the legal and administrative costs of complying with legislation. Such costs borne by coal companies under the Ohio law are thought to be a surrogate of these costs under the new Federal law. Regression analyses were used to relate the legal and administrative costs to acres in the permit and the tonnage of coal produced.

[Asphalt and road oil are the principal products manufactured from Wyoming ?clack oils? which, because of their high asphalt an high sulfur content, are difficult and costly to refine into high-grade motor fuels, burning oils, and lubricants by pre sent methods. Accordingly, the remand for these asphaltic residuums for the construction of roads and other uses is a controlling- factor in the quantity of crude oil produced. This report presents research results obtained in the investigation of deviation control of boreholes in the rotary drilling process. The approach taken in this research is the passive method of placing stabilizers in the bottom-hole assembly to control deviation. Extensive use was made of the drill string mechanics theories of Lubinski and Woods. Analog, digital and hybrid solutions to variety of boundary value problems were investigated in order to determine the best models for bottom-hole assemblies. Field drilling data was analyzed and the results obtained from various models were compared to the actual drilling results. Various accomplishments of this work have been published in open energy industry literature, with more publications to follow.

The objective of this handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface metal and nonmetal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. Portions of the handbook that should prove most useful to the inspectors include a survey check list, rules for determining if sampling is required, list of most frequently encountered contaminants, list of candidate contaminants and their sampling conditions, interpretation of results, and a procedure for a health and safety inspection.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. Por ello, el presente trabajo describe el diseño y operación de los stockpiles en algunos yacimientos de Chile y Perú. El primer paso para el correcto dimensionamiento de un stockpile y su respectivo sistema de extracción de material, es determinar las propiedades de fluidez del mineral manejado bajo condiciones similares a las que será sometido el material en la mina, una vez que entre en funcionamiento el proyecto. Asimismo, se recomienda realizar ensayos de fluidez a varias muestras representativasdel mineral, las cuales deben ser cuidadosamente seleccionadas para que representen fidedignamente las condiciones que se encontrarán en la mina durante su vida útil, de forma que sus resultados permiten un correcto diseño y dimensionamiento del stockpile y su sistema de extracción de mineral. A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain t did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

Due to the importance of maintaining open airways on a longwall panel, mine management decided to install cribs made of foamed cement. Foamed cement had been used at other company operations on several projects. A recent test at a sister operation had proven the crib installation technique and established that foamed cement cribs could provide better support than wooden cribs. The area to be supported was in a remote location; the limited material needs of foamed cement cribs offered a substantial advantage. In mid February 1993, 75 foamed cement cribs were installed on the tailgate of the active longwall panel. The 75 cribs resisted both horizontal and vertical stresses while successfully supporting the entry.

Orange County, adjacent to the populous and industrialized Los Angeles area, is the fastest growing county in California and is second only to Los Angeles County in total population (figure 1). In addition to an equable climate and a burgeoning economy, there is room in Orange County for growth and expansion. Growth over the past decade has resulted in rapid development of industrial tracts, housing areas, and shopping and commercial centers, mostly in former agricultural areas. The value of new building in 1972 was a record amount-over I billion dollars (figure 2). Problems relating to the proper direction of growth are the concern of both government and the private sector. The intelligent and efficient use of areas to be developed requires planning for the conservation and protection of the County's natural beauty and for the orderly development of natural resources. The availability of sand and gravel, which is used in many phases of construction, will be a major controlling factor in the future of the County.

Por tal motivo, el objetivo del presente texto busca incrementar la capacidad de las plantas generadoras existentes a través de varios proyectos como la estimulación de lluvias, desviación del rio Colorado, el dragrado del canal de Upamayo, la elevación del lago Junín. Para el programa de refinamiento de zinc, se autorizó la construcción del proyecto hidroeléctrico de Paucartambo con una capacidad de 65 mil K, obteniéndose las siguientes características: la carretera de acceso, represa de desviación, la bocatoma, desarenador, cámara de carga, túnel principal, cámara de equilibrio, válvula de mariposa, funicular paralelo, casa de fuerza, tres turbinas de impulsión, generadores, subestación. Por último, se instaló el sistema de corriente de alta frecuencia que ayudará a las comunicaciones, telemediciones, control de relays de sobrecarga, así como permitirá que las subestaciones entre Carhuamayo y la Oroya controlen la energía usada en los distintos puntos centrales del sistema. "

Coal is essential to America?s future energy needs. To meet these needs mining methods must be safe, economical, and environmentally acceptable. Belt conveyor systems for coal haulage from surface mines offer great potential in this situation. The advantages over conventional truck haulage are particularly promising for area strip mines in western coal fields such as the Powder River Basin where relatively thick, flat-lying coal seams occur. The current demand for low-sulfur coal specifically emphasizes the need for better mining methods in these areas. Underspoil haulage is the term applied to transportation of coal from the pit to the surfate in area strip coal mines by belt conveyors in tunnels under the spoil. The advantages over trucks include lower manpower requirements, greater pit safety and efficiency, and improved reclamation procedure. This evaluation includes a comparison of total mining costs for truck haulage versus six variations of the underspoil haulage concept. The more efficient of these underspoil haulage systems have economic advantages over truck haulage which become more pronounced with deeper overburden, thicker coal, and higher annual production.
