THE following paper describes current mining practices of the Riverside Cement Co. at its Crestmore plant, Riverside, California. For a number of years the Riverside Cement Co. obtained its raw materials by surface quarry operations but after these deposits were exhausted for equipment available at that time, the company started underground mining. Mine workings were begun in 1927 to 1930 for the recovery of limestone by block-caving methods. GEOLOGY The bed of limestone that is being worked is a metamorphosed and recrystallized limestone, which is generally white in color and from medium to coarsely crystalline. This bed is fissured by water courses that vary from minute cracks to large areas. The bed has also been cracked by intrusions along the footwall and hanging wall. These walls are coarse-grained, gray, quartz granodiorite. The strike of the deposit is north and south and it dips to the east at an angle of approximately 50º. The bed is approximately 1700 ft. long, 270 ft. thick at right angles to the dip at the middle of the deposit and tapers to a thickness of approximately 100 ft. at each end. MINING METHODS The mine layout consists of four main levels with elevations as follows: 892 Collar of shaft. 800 Manway level used for ventilation, prospect purposes and as an entrance into the stopes. 700 Mining level where all material is extracted and on which are located the tapping grizzlies. This is the elevation from which all main cutoff stopes and undercutting work is started. 660 Haulage level where the limestone is drawn from transfer raises into the cars and is transported to the tipple by electric locomotives. 633 Level where all water is collected and which keeps the general water table below the working levels. A detailed description of the mine was given in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6795, in June 1934. Current Block Development The first blocks to be caved were developed very much after the procedure followed in the copper mines of Arizona. This paper covers the ninth block to be caved. With a hard, tough rock like our limestone, it was found that some alterations in the development and control of draw in caving were necessary to secure better crushing effect and provide more safety for such secondary blasting as is required. Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

The application of conventional titanium alloys is limited to 550°C due to their poor oxidation resistance. In addition, severe grain growth is observed in single-phase titanium alloys in long-term runs at elevated temperature leading to a degradation of their mechanical properties. In exhaust applications in automotive or aerospace engineering, products are often manufactured by cold-deformation like deep-drawing or rolling which is normally difficult in oxidation-resistant titanium alloys due to the presence of titanium-silicides. Therefore, in the current study, titanium alloys based on CP Titanium Grade 1S (soft grade) were developed showing (1) improved oxidation resistance due to a concerted addition of silicon, iron and niobium, (2) microstructure stability by the precipitation of hafnium-silicides mainly on the grain boundaries and (3) good cold-deformation properties. The industrial production route was developed so that the new class of Ti-Si-Fe-Nb-Hf-alloys is now ready for application in exhaust systems of planes or cars at minimum 800°C.

Many technology problems must be solved if we are to continue to produce phosphate at our current rate of consumption. The U.S. produces at least 25% of the world's phosphate, 40 million tons of phosphate rock per annum with most of the production coming from Florida. Of particular concern are improved separation efficiency and the ability to treat new dolomitic resources. Phosphate flotation technology needs include: 1. Simplification of the standard flowsheet 2. Improved recovery of coarse phosphate 3. Selective flotation for phosphate recovery from dolomitic resources Preliminary results, including tests on plant feed from Florida show that these objectives may be achieved with a new collector chemistry depending on the specific circumstances. The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the preliminary results from single stage flotation experiments both at the University of Utah laboratories and at Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) laboratories. In the best case, from these experiments with low grade (5% P2O5) coarse feed (16x35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95 % was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31 % P2O5. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collector. Based on these results it seems that a one step process may be possible for phosphate flotation and a research program is justified for the development of this new flotation strategy.

METHODS in colorimetry are based on the assumption that the intensity of the color of a definite volume of solution is directly proportional to the quantity of the color-producing substance' present. In the preparation and examination of colored solutions there are three ways in which the depth of color may be varied. These variables are; (1) the quantity of the coloring matter, (2) the quantity of the solvent, or the dilution, and (3) the thickness or depth of that portion of the solution examined. With these three variables as a basis, three general methods in colorimetry have been devised, all of which have been used in the determination of carbon in steel. In the first method, the quantity of the solution is kept the same for both the unknown steel and the standard, and the sections compared are of equal thickness, while the quantity of the standard is varied until the color obtained is of the same intensity as that produced by a definite quantity of the unknown steel. In laboratories where this method is used there is pre¬pared and kept for permanent use a series of solutions with varying amounts of the standard, representing the percentages of carbon from the lowest to the highest demanded in that laboratory. These standard solutions are kept in bottles, or test-tubes of equal diameter, and are arranged in series from the faintest to the most intense color, so that it is a simple matter to find the place of the unknown steel in the series, when the solution is of a definite volume and is contained in a tube of the same diameter as the standard tubes. Over the past two years research, development ad field tests have been conducted on a new product called the "Scott Cable Sling". This work resulted in the awarding of U.S. Patent No. 4265571 on May 5, 1981, to the inventor. Work on this' project was done by the staff of Scott Mine Technical Services, Inc., and is in keeping with its philosophy of advancing mine grad control technology. Recent acceptance by industry has resulted in volume purchases of the product and indications are that it will gain wide acceptance by the mining industry. The system features flexibility in its application and is useful in both roof and rib control. This paper describes the product, discusses its range of applications and cites specific field examples of its use.

It is undisputed that an interaction between mine fires and mine ventilation systems exists. The ventilation carries the poisonous and sometimes explosive combustion products, which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires, through the mine and it provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. The fire, on the other hand, can produce considerable ventilation disturbances which make it difficult to predict the path along which the combustion products travel. The opinions, how serious a threat such fire generated ventilation disturbances are, vary. Where shallow deposits are mined and brisk ventilation currents are used, it is frequently felt that these disturbances are of no serious concern. Where mine workings extend over larger elevation differences and where such disturbances have been encountered and been the cause of some larger disasters, their assessment is an integral part of all fire emergency plans. The author felt that the potential of digital computers for the design of ventilation emergency plans, contrary to their acceptance for conventional ventilation planning for more than two decades, is not yet fully utilized. He designed a program for the simulation of ventilation systems under emergency conditions in particular fires. ABSTRACT: A method (patent pending) has been developed to determine the quality of environmental cab filtration systems. This method utilizes specially configured filter cartridges to remove carbon dioxide from the ambient air with the environmental cab’s air filtration system. A real-time gas monitor is placed inside an unoccupied cab with the filtration system running to time decay the carbon dioxide to its lowest concentration or equilibrium level. The outside carbon dioxide concentration level can be measured concurrently with another gas monitor or with the same inside cab gas monitor during a representative period before and after the inside sampling is conducted. Cab filtration system leakage is comparatively deduced from the difference between the special cartridge filter efficiency and overall cab efficiency. Laboratory trials have illustrated that desirable high efficiency test filter configurations (greater than 99 % efficiency) can be devised, but have air quantity and test time limitations. These trials also demonstrated that CO2 penetration was reflective of controlled air leaks around a high efficiency filter under equilibrium conditions. This report examines the elements of this patent pending method.

This paper briefly reviews the history of mine haulage trucks. It reviews producti- vity limitations with respect to size or speed. Changing haul requirements once again create the need for more flexible mechanical drive power transmission equipment. The new equip- ment however is designed to provide extended life between overhauls as compared with previous mechanical transmissions.

The population balance concept has provided a useful framework for the description of the operating behavior of the ball mill. This approach finds expression in the so-called selection breakage function model for batch and continuous mills. This model produces very good descriptions of the size distribution of the products from ball milling operations and the model is very useful for the description of batch and continuous mills and, when combined with models for classifiers and other unit operations, provides a solid basis for flowsheet simulation procedures. The breakage and selection function model is essentially descriptive and not predictive because the parameters in the model cannot as yet be related to the fundamental material properties of the material that is broken and to the fracture mechanics that govern the comminution of brittle particulate material during the rapid impact and compression events that occur with high frequency in a ball mill. The population balance approach smears over the individual processes and regards the ball mill as a continuum with breakage occurring continuously in time and space. New experimental techniques, particularly the adaptation of the Hopkinson bar as the ultrafast load cell (UFLC) to the problem of observing the extremely rapid impact fracture of particulate solids, have made it possible to make accurate and consistent measurements of particle strength, particle fracture energy and the single-impact breakage function. These quantitative measurements have been incorporated into a new conceptual model for the description of the ball mill. The model is based on identifying all events that give rise to particle breakage, and using the fundamental experimental data obtained on the UFLC and other single-particle fracture tests, the probabilities of these events can be independently determined. The distribution of impact energies that occur in the ball mill has been established by discrete element simulation of the media motion. The probabilistic description of the individual fracture events and the distribution of impact energies are combined to make a priori predictions of ball mill performance under a variety of operating conditions. The new model is used to calculate the selection and breakage functions for quartz in a small batch mill.

The converting of copper mattes to blister copper has seen few technical advances since the introduction of batch furnaces using submerged tuyeres over a hundred years ago. The first side-blown converting vessel, operated by P. Manhes in 1882, was an offshoot of the 'Bessemer steelmaking process, and subsequent improvements in the conversion of molten mattes resulted In the Peirce-Smith converter, still the Industry standard today. While Peirce-Smith' converting has served the industry well since the early 1900!s, increasingly stringent environmental regulations, burgeoning energy costs, and a trend toward continuous processing have set the stage for a major improvement in this area of copper production. In contrast to a growing number of approaches for continuous converting using molten copper mattes, Kennecott is developing a process for treatment of solidified matte which allows improved' control, higher oxygen enrichment and a separation or decoupling of smelting and converting operations not possible with the other converting technologies. The new process known as Solid Matte Oxygen Converting, or SMOC, eliminates the need for molten matte transfers, minimizes fugitive emissions, and produces high strength SO2 off gases which substantially reduce offgas handling requirements. The SMOC process, despite additional matte solidification and size reduction steps, offers both capital and operating cost advantages for new smelters and the upgrading of existing plants, when compared with conventional converting technologies. Capital cost reductions of up to 35% in converting, gas handling, and sulfur fixation are indicated. Kennecott has successfully tested the new process concept and continued' development work is now under way to commercialize the technology. This paper reviews the limitations of batch copper converting with emphasis on the need for a continuous process, previous industry approaches to continuous converting of molten mattes, and the new Kennecott development.

LAST year the authors presented a paper that discussed the various electrical measurements they perform in drill holes, which they name "electrical coring."' The object of the present paper is to give a brief account of the points of scientific interest that have been elucidated by further field work and laboratory research, as well as the economic, results that have been attained recently. The practical examples given in this paper are drawn, for the most part, from the field work performed in Russian oil fields during the years 1931 and 1932. This is due to the fact that, thanks to the comprehensive cooperation of the Russian geologists and scientists, the authors are allowed to make public a large amount of recent information. In other countries in which the authors are engaged in similar work, the competi¬tion between private companies makes it imperative, for a considerable lapse of time, to avoid publication of the results obtained. The following points will be discussed successively, under sepa-rate headings: 1. Electrochemical phenomena in drill holes. 2. Stratigraphic correlations and tectonic studies. 3. Relations between the productivity of oil horizons and their electrical resistivity. 4. Location of coal seams. 5. Summary and conclusions.

"Bottom blown oxygen copper smelting process has been developed in Dongying, China by Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. in commercial scale. This is the first modem copper smelting technology developed in China with the advantages of high oxygen enrichment, low temperature and autothermal operation. Production capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes per year of copper has been achieved through a single bottom blown oxygen furnace with instantaneous feed rates reaching up to 90 t/h. The main features of the bottom blowing smelting process are that high grade matte (up to 72 wt% Cu) can be produced at relatively low temperatures with 2-3 wt% Cu remaining in the smelting slag. Analyses of quenched smelting slag show that significant amount of magnetite crystals are present in the slags at operating temperature which indicates that the operating temperature was much lower than the liquidus temperature of the slag. After four years operation this new technology has shown great potential for expanding production capability and energy saving. Process development continues on the first commercial scale bottom blown furnace at Dongying Fangyuan Nonferrous Metals and a larger bottom blown smelting furnace is under construction.IntroductionFlash and bath smelting technologies are the major processes used in modem copper making industry [l]. Ausmelt/Isasmelt using top blown and Noranda/Teniente using side blown are typical and common bath smelting technologies. In 1980s-1990s Hunan Shuikoshan Mineral Bureau, jointly with China Nonferrous Engineering and Research Institute (now China Enfi Engineering Corp.), developed the concepts of the bottom blown oxygen processes for both lead and copper smelting [2]. After the pilot test on 3000 ton copper per year scale in 1991, it was not progressed to industrial scope."

Today, the future of the coal industry is extremely bright because coal can be produced at a cost which makes it competitive with other energy sources. However, the industry has been forewarned that further cost reductions must be made if it expects to remain a serious contender in the growing energy market. Surface as well as underground operations must be improved. The very same elements which affected production a. few years ago still exist today and will continue to be present in the future. Improvement's in production mining equipment, mining methods, and auxiliary equipment have resulted in reduced costs over the past few years. Efforts must be continued toward further reducing costs in areas which have been improved previously, and new areas should be investigated for possible improvements. Therefore, new techniques must be developed which will enable the industry to augment its current efforts in reducing the cost of mining. The logical place to begin evaluating the factors affecting production and cost is in the immediate face area where a substantial part of the total cost of mining is incurred. The coal industry stands to gain much through the development of new techniques for analyzing the numerous variables affecting production and by establishing methods for eliminating or minimizing the adverse effect of those variables which can be controlled. Intuition and trial-and-error methods have been the standard means used to resolve many of the factors which influence production. As a result, many elements are overlooked or ignored because their effect on production is not pronounced and cannot be readily resolved. The need for a method of analyzing such factors was recognized by the Office of Coal Research. Therefore, in April 1962, under OCR sponsorship, a. research project was initiated at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objective of the project was to identify the factors which influence mining costs in the immediate production area, and to develop methods and techniques which will enable the coal operator to minimize production costs. The objective of the research at VPI has been successful, and techniques have been developed for establishing quantitative facts concerning the interrelationships of production activities.

"A traditional linkage has long been established at Laval University's Department of Mining & Metallurgy between the Mineral Process (MP) and the Mining Exploitation (Min) on one hand, and between the Extractive Metallurgy (EM) and the Materials Engineering (Mat) on the other. This academic separation of Mineral Processing from Extractive Metallurgy at the educational level has become increasingly at odds with today's industrial practice in which both disciplines are not only complementary but also often intertwined. For instance, in gold ore processing, comminution, flotation, and gravity separation units are interfaced with atmospheric or pressure leaching modules and with carbon adsorption and electrowinning units. The new copper plants in South America combine comminution and flotation circuits with heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning processes.In order to reflect this new industrial reality and to harmonise the options offered in both its engineering programs, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Laval University has introduced major changes in its curriculum in 1996. These changes reflect also the recognition that the somewhat secondary status given so far to Mineral Processing and to Extractive Metallurgy within their ""mother"" programs, Mining/Mineral Engineering and Materials metallurgical Engineering respectively, was in sharp contrast with their actual significance for the Canadian economy. Leading industrial voices have raised similar concerns and the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board has also addressed this problem in its latest program evaluation.The changes implemented at Laval aimed at a) better representing MP and EM within the two undergraduate programs; b) training top-level versatile and multidisciplinary engineers, fluent in all aspects of MP and EM, irrespectively of which of the two ((mother)) programs they had chosen and capable of meeting today's industrial requirements; c) training students in process analysis, optimisation and automatic control using state-of-the-art software, and d) taking into account the co-operative nature of both undergraduate programs.Results are very encouraging in terms of student enrolment and industrial response. However, some concern is expressed on the sustainability of the renewed curriculum considering the drastic budget restrictions in effect at Laval as in most other Canadian universities."

A cut-off grade is used to distinguish an economically viable block of ore from non-economical ones in mining operations. In order to obtain a high Net Present Value (NPV), a strategic and precise determination of cut-off grades (mill feed/marginal, marginal/waste) is required. In recent years, the significant depletion of feed grades and increasing mining operating costs have affected the viability of new and existing mining operations. Hence, the introduction of a pre-concentration system to process ore before sending it the main processing plant has gained increasing attention for its potential improvements in resource exploitation processes, mineral processing, energy consumption and environmental impacts. The primary potential advantage of implementing a pre-concentration system is the improvement of resource utilisation and increased reserves as a result of a reduction in cut-off grade. The objective of this paper is to present a new cut-off grade method, which can be used in the presence of a pre-concentration system for underground metalliferous mining operations. The results of this study illustrate the potential economic benefits of using a pre-concertation system prior to a mineral processing operation as a result of the reduced cut-off grade and increased NPV.

A review of the literature shows that pile integrity is a significant concern in pile construction. Recently, a new integrity test, thermal integrity profiling (TIP,) has been put into use in foundation construction. It measures temperature changes and thermal profiles of concrete during curing. Heat generation and dissipation of early-age concrete is determined by the concrete mix, the ground conditions and the shape of concrete structure. The current data interpretation practice is primary based on experience. Anomaly detection through direct analysis of temperature profiles is currently indicative or suggestive and temperature signatures are usually similar, and numerous causes are not easily isolated. The core of the TIP testing technique, i.e. collecting detailed temperature measurements along the pile during the hydration process, is promising but a new interpretation approach is required. In this paper, a new interpretation approach has been developed in which TIP constitutes the first step. An investigative staged process is then followed to establish and assess the anomalies in the problematic regions along the pile employing the combined use of detailed finite element (FE) simulations, the actual temperature data from TIP and genetic evolution algorithms. In each stage, more details could be revealed about the anomalies being investigated including, ultimately, location, size and shape; this staged process enables practitioners to follow a riskbased approach and decide whether or not to pursue subsequent stages depending on the results they get at the end of each stage. This new approach, depending on the stages required for the analysis, will potentially avail practicing engineers of crucial test results about the quality of the pile immediately following pile construction, hence enabling repair and remedial work straight away at a lower cost.

From experience and scientific references it is known that during information processing, the following error types are transmitted: technical, analogy errors and method errors. For decreasing the value of these errors, especially of the method ones, old algorithms should be perfected and new ones should be developed for processing, interpreting and achieving the graphical layout by means of automatic data processing. In this respect, we propose a new deposit model based on numeric mathematical modelling which requires the use of automatic data processing. The utilization of the numeric model of the proposed deposit, allows the obtaining of the following advantages: • the model is used for any deposit form; • it is used for the calculation of deposit resources (volume, weight, and content); • it is used in design due to the facility of obtaining sections through the deposits area; • it eliminates at "0" the errors of graphical data transcription; • the use of the model imposes a uniform geological research; • the algorithm is transposed in a package of programs.

With fast development of China modernization, road construction obtains great achievement. However, in the construction process of highway, especially the high-grade highway in mountainous area, there are many unavoidable high cut slopes. Specifications for Design of Highway Subgrades, China, prescribe that the design scheme of slope with height more than 30m should be compared with bridge scheme and tunnel scheme economically. In spite of the existing guidelines, it is still quite common to see many high slopes due to engineering geological conditions, highway line shape, cost and issues related to traditional design ideas. Actually the traditional way with ?high backfill, the high cut? for mountainous highways seriously damages the original ecological environment and groundwater system, especially to those area with weak ecology, where the damage is unrecoverable. It is quite common practice to use artificial vegetation for cut slope virescence, however it still has problems such as low ratio of survivor, high maintenance cost and lack of species diversity. Now people are more and more aware of the importance of ecological environment, it becomes urgent to decrease the damage to ecological environment after ensuring the stability of high slopes. With the aim to reduce ecological damage, we proposed a new design approach which is ecological environment friendly by decreasing cut slope height with steep excavation scheme. This approach requires that (1) the geological condition is good, and the rockmass can be sTable itself; (2) excavation should not badly damage the rock, which means blasting must be controled by using buffer blasting, smooth blasting and pre-splitting blasting; (3) if local geological condition is not very good, excavation should have intervals for one bench, the advised space is 20m; (4) to ensure the slope stability in construction process, the cut slope should be reinforced more strongly than usual and in time. Finally, the deformation of the slope and the working condition of the reinforcement structure should be monitored to ensure the slope stability. The new design is used to a roadside cut slope of provincial trunk highway S223 in Guangdong Province. Based on intensive geological investigation and borehole tests, it is found that the slope rock mass is intact and sound, and the rock strength is quite high. Results from numerical modeling by UDEC reveal that compared with the traditional design scheme with 90.23m high slope, the steep scheme with only 23.46m high is characterized by its relatively large deformation and stress concentration, however the influenced area only appears at the upper slope and tends to sTable. With cable reinforcement, the stability of slope excavated steeply can be guaranteed. Deformation of the slope and the cable force are monitored in details in the period of construction, which show that the deformation of the slope decreases gradually and the final deformation is very small, and the cable tensions change small after the cables were tensioned. It is optimistically estimated that the steep slope should be sTable during operation. Comparison analysis between the steep scheme and the common scheme affirms that the steep excavation is better than the traditional scheme in terms of ecological environmental effect, slope height, the excavated amount, the excavated quantity of slope surface, engineering cost. It is concluded that if geological condition permits, the steep cut scheme should be used with better benefits.
