Life Cycle Assessment has been used to compare the environmental performance of landfilling versus recycling of the zinc used for galvanizing steel. Hypothetical process routes were com-posed involving four different EAF dust treatment processes; Waelz kiln, DC-furnace, EZINEX and slag fuming, as well as scrap dezincing. The study shows that recycling of zinc used for galvanizing steel has environmental benefits in that it saves zinc resources. However, zinc recovery does not necessarily decrease the potential impact on global warming and acidification. The magnitude of these two impact categories is tightly correlated with the amount and type of primary energy consumed in a process. Due to the high electricity consumption in the dezincing process, this route has the highest impact on Global Warming Potential as well as Acidification Potential. The major part of the energy requirement for the production of zinc from primary and secondary sources is consumed in the reduction of ZnO to Zn. The consequence is that the theoretically possible savings in primary energy by recycling zinc-containing materials are relatively minor. The impact categories "land use" and "waste generation" are not considered in this study, but most likely the evaluation of such impacts would further increase the potential environmental impact of the landfill alternative. The results also show that the location of an electricity-intensive process highly affects the potential environmental impact. Comparing process and material alternatives in LCA studies where branch average data is used, is considerably more complex than when LCA is used within a company.

The coal-based power generation industry faces increased pressure from all sectors to improve its environmental performance. This is due to increased awareness of and concerns regarding greenhouse-and acid-gas emissions, toxic metal releases (to both air and water) and water availability. A methodology to assess this industry?s environmental performance is needed. Such a methodology should assess all environmental impacts accurately, recognizing the irspatial and temporal dependence, and taking into account the social acceptability of technologies employed. Here, we develop a methodology to determine the environ-mental impact associated with solid wastes generated by this industry, and apply this to the specific case of ash management. More specifically, the case study compares the environmental footprint of an ash deposit for a number of operational water management scenarios. The methodology considers leachate generation processes from ash impoundments to obtain a time-dependent concentration profile of mobile constituents at the interface between the ash impoundment and the surrounding environment. This leachate prediction modelling is subsequently linked to plume dispersion modelling tools to determine the fate and transport of leached components, predominantly salts, into groundwater. Together, these provide a measure of the extent to which a land mass is affected by leachate migration from the deposit. To determine the exact boundary between regions of acceptable and unacceptable risk to the environment, we use Ecological Risk Assessment concepts. In this way it is possible to obtain a time dependent affected land footprint which could be used as an indicator of the environmental impact of solid waste management practices. This information can be included in a set of environmental criteria which form the basis of an overall environ-mental impact assessment, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The value of LCA is that its structure is consistent with accepted models of environmental decision making, where different approaches to valuation in impact assessment assist in prioritizing impacts on the basis of their perceived significance. The proposed ?affected land footprint? metric represents a significant improvement over current LCA impact indicators for solid waste management practices. On July 10, 1926, lightning struck at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, and caused the explosion of at least 600,000 pounds (272,000 kilograms) of ammunition, resulting in more than $600 million (2015 dollars) in damage, the destruction of 200 buildings, and 22 deaths. Fortunately, there has not been a major incident involving lightning and explosives in the US in some time, though lightning has destroyed fuel storage tanks in recent years, including in North Dakota, Texas, and Ohio. Lightning poses a significant hazard to the explosives industry. Carrying high currents and temperature, lightning can cause explosives to detonate, start fires near storage facilities, and injure or kill operators.

THE Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production are as follows: Fe2O3 Si02 A12O3 CAC03 MGCO Lump, per cent 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, percent 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1 ¼ to 0.063 in., is calcined at the, lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths.

In recent years the requirements for a barrier system between the waste body of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and the natural ground (NG) has necessitated the use of HDPE-lined TSFs in South Africa and other countries. The addition of an HDPE liner creates an interface between, inter alia, the tailings and surrounding soils on the footprint of the TSF. It is known that low-strength materials beneath slopes can cause slope instability. One method which can theoretically mitigate this instability of a lined TSF is the addition of stability bunds along the footprint of the TSF. Altering the profile of the footprint to include slope changes which oppose the direction of the failure creates passive slices in a limit equilibrium analysis. The passive slices actively oppose the movement of active slices, resisting the mobilization of tailings, thus greater active slice forces are required to develop a failure surface running along the liner interface. Two scenarios are presented and compared. The first scenario retains the ground profile unaltered and the second scenario includes stability bunds along the ground profile. An in-depth assessment is made of the interslice forces and the interface shear stresses for each scenario. The theoretical background is discussed in greater detail to determine the mechanisms of reinforcement provided by the bunds.

The Fola Coal Co., LLC No 2 surface mine, located in Nicholas and Clay Counties, WV, exploits up to nine coal seams by contour, highwall, and mountain top removal mining methods. After encountering faults, areas of highly fractured coal, and subsidence failures. the mine requested a lineament analysis from the Mine Safety & Health Administration's (Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center) Roof Control Division. The 31 km2 study area was viewed on a LANDSAT-5 band 4 (near infrared, 0.76-0.90 µm wavelength) satellite image with ERDAS Imagine 8.4 software. The software allows image examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations, resulting in variable tonal characteristics. The study area image was viewed in 45° azimuthal increments from 000° to 315° at artificial sun angles of 10°, 30°, 50°, and 70°, yielding 32 separate images. The interpretation process developed by MSHA Roof Control personnel identified 16 northeast-striking and one northwest-striking lineament that intersected mine property. Faults and areas of roof instability corresponded well with lineaments identified in the study. Successful lineament identification prompted mine management to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool for adjacent property, thereby identifying in advance areas that could adversely affect safety and production.

This paper reports a simple approach to model the waveform change due to travel distances based on the field measurement. A linear interpolation is used to estimate the waveform at a distance from two vibration waveforms recorded at two different distances. The resulted waveforms are compared with actual recorded waveforms at the point in both time and frequency domains. It shows that the proposed method to estimate the waveform change yield reliable results. The advantages of the proposed method are that it does not require assumptions that a transfer function does and that it is based on purely the measured waveforms that are encoded with in-situ rock properties. The method could be more reliable for far field seismic waveforms and could be an approximation for near field waveform estimation.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. What is not measured cannot be managed. This is true of most things, including a furnace lining. This paper describes a Lining Management System used for this purpose. It provides the operations staff with a management tool to predict long term lining life and acts as a process optimisation tool. It alarms and records upset furnace conditions. Outputs from the system are described as presented through a specially developed software package and interface. It includes vertical and horizontal furnace sections showing estimated isotherms through the lining as well as the furnace bath. It also shows calculated heat flux values, estimated lining wear and the freeze layer profile. A novel three-dimensional display is described which provides the operator with a big picture view of the furnace crucible profile under real time operating conditions. The powerful trending facility for analysing both measured and calculated values is discussed. The required instrumentation hardware as well as the installation thereof is described, with special reference to an electrically insulating thermocouple socket design. Finally feedback is provided on the first year?s performance of the system installed on an open ferrochrome furnace at Assmang Chrome, Machadodorp, South Africa.

The mine operator immediately launched a detailed investigation to understand the causes of this accident and develop procedures to prevent any recurrence of such events in the future. The authors from McGill University were invited to collaborate with the engineers at the mine to examine this accident. The events leading to the accident were studied, appropriate measurements were taken and samples of the waste material were collected for further testing and analysis.The field visit and the interview of the witnesses allowed the detailed documentation of the events. The sequence of events related to the incident, along with the experimental results obtained in the course of the investigation, are presented. The waste material was characterized in the laboratory with regard to its behaviour in the presence of water. This information is discussed and the failure mechanism involved in the accident is identified. Finally, the full recommendations as well as the immediate operational measures implemented by the mine to prevent the future occurrence of such events are presented and discussed."

A novel liquid settlement system (LSS) was installed in advance of mining at a western United States (U.S.) longwall mine to measure total roof sag from the time of cutting to days after mining during gate road development. The system was used to compare differences in roof sag between conventional place-change mining using a Joy continuous miner and a Fletcher roof bolter and mining using a miner-bolter. The LSS was installed with an intrinsically safe, miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS) to record roof response at four locations in the same gate road. The system utilized pressure transducers to measure roof sag by the principle of falling head (fluid pressure) in fluid-filletubes installed in the immediate roof. Details of the LSS design, installation, data collection, post-processing, and future applications are discussed.

A local additional potential model (LAPM) was developed to illustrate the role of strain rate in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of pipelines. According to LAPM, both density and mobility of the local active spots on the steel surface, i.e., dislocation emergence points, increase linearly with strain rate. Generation of such active spots introduces an additional negative potential locally, affecting the electrochemical reaction and, consequently, the susceptibility of the steel to SCC. Electrochemical corrosion measurements, slow strain rate tests and electrochemical hydrogen permeation test were combined to demonstrate the validity of LAPM to illustrate pipeline SCC in an acidic soil solution. It is found that a maximum of the SCC susceptibility occurs at strain rate of 10-6 s1, which is associated with an enhanced hydrogen evolution due to the local additional potential (LAP) effect.

Mining is still a significant economic activity within the Hauraki District. The Martha project is particularly significant. Estimates are that in the order of 850 direct and indirect jobs are derived as a consequence of the Martha project within the Waikato Region. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) is New Zealand's primary piece of environmental legislation. It sets out to provide the framework for the control of the use, development and protection of almost all physical and natural resources. Minerals are excluded from the sustainability requirements of the legislation but as mining invariably involves the use of land, all the other elements of RMA apply. The Council's role in dealing with mining changed with the introduction of RMA. It became responsible for administration of those matters that fell within the functions set out in section 31 of the RMA in respect to existing authorisations. Mineral development needed to be considered in the development of the District Plan that the Council is required to prepare. Implementation of the Act has been a challenge for not only local government but for many industries and resource users since it came into force in 1991. There have been, and are, differing views on both the way it is administered and its intent. The Hauraki District Council has been at the forefront of some of the challenges that are a consequence of the Act. Its reactions to these challenges have been consistent. It treats mining in the same why it treats any other industry. At times this approach has not been understood and without challenge from sections of the community.

The importance of the accurate determination and interpretation of the bulk density and porosity of a given iron ore deposit is very often disregarded or neglected. Large amounts of time and money are spent on delineating and testing orebodies, and yet one of the most important factors in resource evaluation is sometimes estimated or, at best, determined from existing data from similar deposits. The Thabazimbi and Sishen South iron ore deposits are two well-known economical occurrences of high-grade iron ore in South Africa. Both these deposits formed as secondary enrichment of banded iron formation lithologies. Ongoing density studies on both these deposits are underway and results thus far proved very effective and necessary. Small-scale methods are used to determine average values for different ore types on both deposits. These values are used in resource estimation and geophysical interpretation.

This paper gives an account of the development of a technique whereby the vertical limits of geological horizons may be identified by the use of vertical variograms on the mineral of economic interest. This information may supplement or guide the correct subdivision of the individual horizons into meaning full data sets by diligent geological observation. This process then improves the quality of the variance modelling of the gold distribution in the plane of the individual layers and therefore enables better estimates to be made into the grids or blocks of the mine model. The technique is explained by an account of the development work, which was performed, on duplicate superimposed reef horizons in the Kimberley formations. The paper then shows how the correct approach was developed to evaluate the mineralized layers in a multiple stacked conglomerate layer sequence in the Elsburg reefs of the Witwatersrand Rand System at the Target deposit. The method of categorization of resources according to confidence in the estimate is also explained. The feasibility processes carried out on the three-dimensional model, in accordance with the SAMREC code are also described. An example of the development of a reconciliation process utilizing chip sampling is also explained.

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.
