THE Comstock Lode is in Storey County, Nevada, and extends in a north and south direction through the towns of Virginia City and Gold Hill, with a total length of 4.27 miles. Its mines have produced silver and gold to a known value exceeding $400,- 000,000 since 1859, when the work first began. More than $126.000,000 was paid in dividends by the mining companies, although much more than this was probably realized from the ore, because many milling companies were independent companies owned by the directors and superintendents of the mines. The milling companies' contracts called for an extraction of only 65 per cent and, as much of the ore was worth $100 a ton and up- ward, they must have recovered substantial amounts for their own accounts over and above this guarantee. Gold was discovered in the spring of 1850 by a party of Normons bound for California. The discovery was made at the mouth of Gold canyon near Dayton, on the Carson River, about 10 miles south of Virginia City.

The era of the shield-supported longwall face began in the United States a little over 25 years ago. The most fundamental development of the shield in the past 25 years has been an increase in size and capacity and a progression toward two-legged designs in favor over four-legged shields. Is the ?bigger-the-better? design philosophy justified? The advantage of the two-legged design is largely attributed to its active horizontal force caused by the forward orientation of the leg cylinders. How do we know this? You might be surprised to learn that shield loading data may suggest otherwise. In addition, what about setting pressures? Should they be set as high as possible? Some people have advocated that setting pressures should equal the yield pressure. Does this make any sense? Is yielding a good or bad thing? These are some questions still worthy of investigation that are addressed in this paper. The first major change in gateroad support was the use of cable bolts to replace conventional wood cribbing particularly in Western mines. Standing support changed very little until the mid-1990s, when Strata Products1 introduced the Hercules and Propsetter supports in Eastern mines and Burrell Mining Products introduced the Can support in Western mines. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in new roof support technologies for longwall gateroad support. Historically, standing support, including shield supports, have been designed based on a simplistic model requiring the support to have sufficient capacity to support the gravity loading of a perceived detached rock mass. This approach ignores the stiffness of the support and the resulting ground deformation that is known to be critical to roof stability. Recently, a new approach based on the ground reaction concept has been promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to account for the interaction of the support with the rock mass behavior in achieving ground stability. In addition to gateroad support design, this concept has ramifications for shield capacities, setting pressures, and recovery room support design that challenge current practices in these areas. Although longwall mining has matured into the safest and most productive underground mining method used today, traditional concepts of roof support design and practice should still be evaluated and challenged. Ultimately, advancements in the science of ground control are made by recognizing deficiencies in current theories and thinking outside the box.

This abstract explores the historical progression and key advancements in electronic detonator technology highlighting its impact on the industry as well as the challenges in deploying these types of technologies. Electronic detonators represent a significant departure from traditional initiation systems offering precise timing capabilities and improved reliability and safety. The early development of electronic detonators can be traced back to the late 20th century with the introduction of basic electronic initiation systems. These early iterations provided a glimpse into the potential for greater control and accuracy in blasting operations. As technology progressed, electronic detonators underwent significant refinement incorporating advanced features such as programmable delay times, multiple firing sequences, expanded blast size and enhanced communication capabilities. These advancements revolutionized the way explosives are deployed in mining and demolition applications enabling engineers to tailor blasts to specific geological or environmental conditions and structural requirements. One of the most notable developments in electronic detonator technology is the integration of microprocessor-based control systems. These systems allow for precise calibration of detonation parameters, including timing, sequence, and energy distribution. By leveraging microprocessor technology electronic detonators have become increasingly sophisticated offering unprecedented levels of precision and safety in blasting operations. The advent of wireless communication technologies has further augmented the capabilities of electronic detonators. Wireless detonation systems enable remote initiation and real-time monitoring of blasting operations enhancing safety by reducing the need for personnel in hazardous environments. The evolution of electronic detonators has also been driven by a growing emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Modern electronic detonation systems are designed, amongst other objectives, to minimize environmental impact, achieve optimal fragmentation outcomes and reduced misfire rates during blasting. These advancements not only improve safety for workers and surrounding communities but also contribute to a more sustainable approach to mining and/or demolition activities. In conclusion, the evolution of electronic detonators has transformed the landscape of commercial mining and demolition offering unprecedented levels of data integration, precision, safety, and environmental responsibility. In recent years, the value to Australia of the introduction of a system of resource rent taxation on the mining industry has been frequently debated. The forms that this rate of return based tax could take, and the impli- cations on government revenue and mining com- pany profitability have been discussed at some length. Further, the selective application of this taxation scheme to certain mining industry sectors has received considerable attention. This study takes the form of a survey of the taxation history of one significant Australian mining venture, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. The conditions faced by this company during its history are used as a base for the imposition of rent taxation schemes. Comparisons are drawn between the historical taxation liability of the company and that which would have been incurred if a resource rent form of taxation had been in existence. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that while the company can be con- sidered to have been a successful enterprise during most of its history, it has not achieved a level of profitability which would warrant the collection of any form of excess profits Tax.

A geostatistical study is made of the drilling results available one stage prior to the present for a tabular deposit. The results show that the blocks required by the mining engineers could have been assessed by the earlier drilling grid with an accuracy significantly better than that obtained by applying conventional methods at the present stage.

This paper is a retrospective on the development, application, and enhancement of the LaModel program from a personal perspective. The narrative starts with an explanation of the objectives behind the original development of the program and then introduces some of the unique and very practical features of the program. Next, a demonstration of how LaModel was advantageously used to model stresses and displacements in a multiple-seam mining situation with highly variable topography is presented. This is followed by the details of a number of the major enhancements and expansions of the program over the years. A back-analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse is then briefly presented, along with the associated development of a recommended calibration procedure for the critical input parameters to LaModel. Finally, some of the present research areas are briefly described, and future enhancements are introduced.

These prob- lems include the nature of the air-water interface, particle-bubble contact and bubble attachment, and the effect of par- ticle size. Questions are also raised on the possible influences of the variability of minerals on flotation, particularly variations in composition and in foreign inclusions, both solid and fluid.

Although small scale mining is regarded by many as of historical value only, this kind of mining activity is still much more widespread than is usually assumed. It has been estimated that it produces as much as ten per cent of the global mineral output. More significantly this figure is often much higher for many of the developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America, signifying the relatively greater contribution of small scale mining to the economies of those countries. It is also noted that small scale mining has always been a feature of mineral production in New Zealand and Australia. An attempt is made to define small scale mining, and the factors determining the suitability of small scale mining operations are discussed. The state of the art in small scale mining is reviewed and the author endeavours to rationalise the important parameters which contribute to successful small scale mining operations and discusses how these parameters may be optimised. The benefits of small scale mining to the mining industry as a whole and to the community at large are outlined. The paper concludes by emphasising the necessity to maintain small scale mining and 'explores' its future 'prospects'.

Following this, the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit resulted in throughputs in excess of 114,000 mtpd and a recent, final third line SAG and ball mill addition have taken the plant to over 175,000 mtpd even with increasing ore hardness and changing ore feed characteristics. The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.

The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.INTRODUCTIONMinera Los Pelambres is a world class copper-molybdenum operation located in the Salamanca area in Chile, in region four, approximately 500 km north east of Santiago, the capital of Chile. In the late 1990s Antofagasta Minerals developed the Minera Los Pelambres project in Chile at an investment cost of approximately $1.3 billion USDs. The project construction was successfully led and completed by Bechtel Corporation in 1999 and within a matter of months the plant was already exceeding the nameplate capacity of 85,000 mtpd. In 2001 a pebble crushing circuit was added to raise the capacity to 114,000 mtpd. In the early part of 2003-2004, it was recognized that the hardness profile was changing with depth and that in order to maintain the plant capacity additional power would be needed in the SAG mills together with upgrading of the primary crusher. In conjunction with these changes a fifth ball mill and a second primary crusher station would also need to be installed. A further detailed engineering study and evaluation was initiated by Minera Los Pelambres. This was lead by Bechtel Corporation with major design contributions from FLSmidth and Siemens in order to establish the re-powering requirements for the SAG mills. These re-powering changes together with the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit took the plant to up to 125,000 mtpd even with harder more competent ores. Finally in the last two years an additional grinding line has been added to take the capacity to consistently over 175,000 mtpd. The third line was installed in a record time of 256 days. A schematic of the current comminution circuit, discussed in this paper, is shown in Figure 2."

Low Strain Pile Integrity Testing has been used in India since 1990’s and several have tried to demonstrate the utility and benefits of this method. However, use of this technology was limited till 1998 as not enough data maybe was not available to justify its use and application on major infrastructure and real estate projects. The first author has done significant work in this method resulting in its use in practically all sectors of the industry that use concrete bored pile foundations as a supporting element. The paper explains various signal enhancers or modifiers involved in processing of low strain test data and its implication on the final output. It also describes how the method can lead to abuse or can provide poor interpretation if incorrectly used. The current effort is to demonstrate that data collection and evaluation becomes complex with changes in soil stratum and pile profile. The paper highlights the present testing practices and provides a guideline for classification of pile integrity into few simple categories in Indian context rather than writing complex interpretations.

The purpose of this review is to raise awareness about e-waste problem in the World. Whether generated at our home or our office, e-waste is most rapidly growing waste problem in the world. Even though there are conventional disposal methods (such as landfill and incineration) for e-waste, these methods have both economic and environmental disadvantages; recycling is a new waste management option which diverts end-of-life (EOL) electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) from landfill and incineration [1, 2]. Successful diversion strategy must be based on economic sustainability, technical feasibility and social support [3]. Recycling infrastructure includes transportation, collection, recovery and resale establishments. The first part of this paper describes the e-waste facts, how big is the e-waste problem and existing recycling programmes and collecting methods in the USA and EU; second part, describes various methods available to recover valuable materials (glass, plastic and metals (Pb, Cu, Al, Steel, Ni, Au, Pd, Cu etc)) in e-waste for a safe and environmental friendly disposal

Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

"This paper provides a critical review of the development and application of advanced controls in mineral processing at the industrial level. These algorithms can be sub-divided into four broad categories: Kalman filter, self-tuning, extended horizon, and knowledge based or expert systems. Applications from each category are described outlining the benefits derived, the relative advantages of that particular controller, and potential limitations of the controller which may inhibit their more widespread application. The paper will conclude with a description of control algorithms which are currently in the rudimentary design stage, but may hold tremendous potential for mineral processing control systems in the next decade. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry has a large installed milling base and many plants are run with manual or low level automatic process control. The competitive pressures imposed by the market will not allow these operations to ignore the significant increase in efficiency that can be achieved through the effective application of advanced process control. These improvements will come in the form of better quality, higher productivity and reduced costs.There have been quite a number of reports of successful applications of advanced control in mineral processing applications. As this trend continues, and more of the work is documented, the technology will be more effectively transferred to process and control engineers. It is the authors' opinion that the most difficult problems facing process control are not really technical in nature. Rather, they lie more in process control education. This extends from management, through engineering to the operators.The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial type overview of some of the more frequently encountered advanced control algorithms. The assumption is that the reader has a superficial knowledge of this technology. In the discussions which follow, several techniques are explored within the framework of simple process examples. Industrial examples are cited for each and an evaluation of the expected longer term potential is given."

As is the case with damage to structures caused by ground vibrations, a fixed break/no break threshold is inapplicable and window damage must be expressed in terms of a statistical probability. The information is summarized in a graph showing the probability of windows being broken by a given level of overpressure.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.

Fluorapatite is an important constituent of the greater part of the basic and ultra-basic rock members of the Complex. The evidence for and role of primary magmatic processes in the development of concentric zones of dunite, pyroxenite, syenite and carbonatite and its consequent bearing on the distribution of apatite are discussed. The presence of at least two generations of each of the latter three rock types indicates the cyclical nature of magmatic activity. Pegmatitic-metasomatic phases corresponding to the major magmatic cycles resulted in emplacement of pegmatoidal assemblages. The abundance of apatite in the pegmatoid can be traced to the composition of its parent magma and its cooling history. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes of phosphate concentrate are produced annually from ores containing from 10 percent to 25 percent apatite.

Explosions in underground coal mines have been a serious safety concern since the advent of mining; despite significant technological advances, they are still occurring. Parameters such as barometric pressure, geological changes, and changes in ventilation can contribute to an explosion. These factors can be monitored with available and developing technologies to create algorithms that predict when explosions are more likely to occur. This paper reviews current underground atmospheric monitoring systems and related regulations around the world. In addition, suggestions for improvement and implications for explosion prevention are discussed.

In underground coal mining, the specification and control of belt and bunker capacities are complicated by (1) stochastic and intermittent conveyor loading, (2) a limited ability to reduce surge at the mine face, and (3) occasional overlapping of loading from two or more mine faces on the conveyors. Recently, because of longwall mining and other factors, the capacity requirements of most mine conveying systems have risen substantially; as a result, efficient capacity design and control have become important mine planning issues. This paper reviews these design issues and their associated modeling procedures. Design considerations and modeling difficulties are also examined.
