Mine seals are used in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active mine workings. The objective of adding inert gas to a sealed mine area is to quickly reduce the oxygen concentration in the sealed area to a level that will not support combustion. In the US, this process is typically conducted from the ground surface and because surface-to-mine access is constrained by so many variables, it is very difficult to provide a source of inert gas to the place where it is needed underground. To alleviate this problem On Site Gas Systems, under a NIOSH contract, built a nitrogen (N2) generation plant that operates in the underground environment. The purpose of this work was to create a reliable in-mine mobile plant that would extract N2 gas from the mine atmosphere and use the gas to create and maintain a safe sealed mine area. The plant is based on a novel design using pressure swing adsorption technology and is sized to fit on a standard shield car or mine dolly for easy transport in and around an underground coal mine. The plant is capable of producing about 900 scf/min of N2 gas at ambient mine conditions. After an exhaustive series of laboratory tests, the plant was field tested at the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) where a portion of the mine was sealed and rendered inert. During the test, the movement of the injected gas was monitored at several underground points to observe the progress and extent of the inerting process. This paper describes the plant design and the results of the field test at the SRCM. Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

A few months ago, Congress passed, and President Bush signed, a national energy bill. Designed to decrease the nation’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, the bill earmarked several billion dollars to increase the use of U.S. coal reserves. The bill also modified permitting regulations to speed up development of the coal reserves located on federal land. Coal currently supplies more than half of the nation’s electricity needs. And as housing starts continue to in-crease and with the nation’s appetite for electronic gadgetry, the demand for energy in the United States will only go up. That means coal producers must expand production while at the same time containing costs so they can enjoy this period of improved coal prices.

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. Because of this, the top request from the exploration industry is diamond rod handling. This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

The largest reserves of palygorskite in the world are located in Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces in East Central China. The deposits are Middle Miocene in age and range from 3 to 6 m in thickness. The deposits are the alteration product of basaltic volcanic ash. The Chinese Geological Survey estimates the palygorskite reserves are in excess of 200 million tons. The elongate particle shape results in unique colloidal properties. Large quantities are exported to Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and West and Gulf Coasts of the United States. The markets include agricultural carriers, paint, joint tape compounds, animal feed binders, catalyst support, drilling muds, and suspending agents for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medicines. The viscosity is high and the quartz content is generally 5% or less.

The main train station of Leipzig in Germany is currently being upgraded from a head station to a partially thru station. In order to achieve this, significant ground improvements are necessary. Soil freezing for example is used to create the excavation box retaining walls. The freezing works will be carried out from two tunnels with an inner diameter of 2.4 m (~ 8ft). The tunnels were constructed by the pipe jacking method. The cutter head of the machine was equipped with discs and scrapers. Driving and excavation was carried out using a bentonite supported face. Due to the small arrival shafts, the machine had to be lifted out in components. The essential limitation of settlements during the drives was achieved even better than expected.

An effective technique to minimize miners? respirable dust and diesel exposure on mobile mining equipment is to place mine operators in enclosed cabs with designed filtration and pressurization systems. Many factors affect the performance of these enclosed cab systems, and one of the most significant factors is the effectiveness of the filtration system. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type filters are typically used because they are highly efficient at capturing all types and sizes of particles, including those in the submicron range such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). However, in laboratory tests, minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 16 filters have proven to be highly efficient for capturing DPM and respirable dust. Also, MERV 16 filters can be less restrictive to cab airflow and less expensive than HEPA filters. To verify their effectiveness in the field, MERV 16 filters were used in the enclosed cab filtration system on a face drill and roof bolting mining machine and tested at an underground limestone mine. Test results showed that DPM and respirable dust concentrations were reduced by more than 90% when the cabs were properly sealed. However, when the cab door was opened periodically throughout the shift, the reduction efficiency of the MERV 16 filters was reduced to 80% on average.

The smelting of copper sulphide concentrate is the dominant route in copper production (Figure 1). Heap leaching of oxidized copper ores with weak sulphuric acid together with copper solvent extraction and electrowinning has gained popularity during recent decades, and it accounts for close to 20 % of primary copper production. Heap leaching offers advantages such as lower costs and consequently the construction of a production plant at a mine site is made possible. Limited resources of oxidized copper ores, the long leaching time of chalcopyrite and inability to recover gold inhibit this growth. The HydroCopperTM process developed by Outokumpu Technology at the laboratories of Outokumpu Research, Pori, Finland, is a new chloride leaching technology /1,2/, which offers an alternative to smelting and heap leaching (Figure 1). In the HydroCopperTM process sulphidic concentrates with various mineralogy and grade can be treated at the mine site to produce high-quality copper. Instead of copper cathodes the HydroCopperTM end products are copper wire rod, copper bars or copper billets. One of the advantages of HydroCopperTM technology is that gold can also be recovered in the process simultaneously /3/. To confirm the functioning of the new process and to dimension equipment Outokumpu Technology built the HydroCopperTM demonstration plant in Pori, Finland /4/. It has a capacity of 1 metric ton of copper per day. After testing with Pyhäsalmi copper concentrate in 2003, the first commercial demonstration run with Erdenet copper concentrate took place in 2004.

The paper presents a brief overview of the mineral industry in Norway, followed by a description of the mineral policy and relevant legislation including the roles of the Norwegian Directorate of Mining and Geological Survey of Norway in this context. The discussion then proceeds to describe the land use planning framework on a national, regional and local level, the interaction between land use planning and the Directorate of Mining and the Geological Survey respectively, and how this impacts on the mineral industry and the exploitation of mineral resources. Some recent Norwegian examples of land use planning conflicts are also presented.

The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. Long extensible conveyor systems are an important option for efficient tunnel excavation where intermediate access is impractical. The conveyor system designed for the Pula Subbaiah Veligonda Tunnel #2 in Andhra Pradesh, India will eventually extend to 19.35km. The Ø10.0m water diversion tunnel will be excavated under India?s largest tiger sanctuary using a Robbins Double Shield TBM. Once extended, the conveyor will be one of the longest single-flight systems ever installed in India, and is expected to offer increased system availability over comparable systems using muck cars. This paper will examine the engineering challenges of long-flight extensible conveyor systems in the areas of belt selection, component design, and equipment location in confined assembly and launch areas

A new comprehensive insitu instrumentation technique named this RCC Method has been developed for rapid assessment and improvement of the structural stability of underground openings. When applied to tunnel construction, the degree of present and prospective safety of underground openings can be determined in quantitative terms within 10 to 20 minutes of microcreep observation. When applied to mining, roofs and floors can be stabilized by controlling the stress conditions. This stress control method has eliminated the need for intensive roof bolting and extensive floor renewal in all cases where it was applied. Use of this technique is illustrated by field examples from the Seikan Undersea Tunnel of Japan and deep potash mining in Canada. NEW INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUE: THE RCC METHOD Failure problems in underground excavation usually arise in weak non-elastic grounds where conventional rock mechanics theories of elasticity are not only useless but also misleading. Presently, discontinuity planes in the ground are being considered a factor in assessing these failure problems, and while this development is interesting academically, it is not of much use in actual excavation work, where it is nearly impossible to identify and quantize all existing planes of discontinuity. Even if such an extraordinary task could be accomplished at an underground excavation site, effective use of the data would be difficult and impractical for rapid excavation work, with the possible exception of rare cases of ideally elastic ground.

"The evaluation of data and information provided by the existing traditional indicators in sustainability assessments is most important. Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH Aachen University developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industry on operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR). In the course of the development of indicators for the raw materials industry quality indicators on different levels of the sustainability assessment procedure have been identified and developed. The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development and integration of quality indicators into sustainability assessment systems."
