Traditionally, South African shaft sinking operations have used electric detonators for the initiation of blastholes. Globally, the trend in shaft sinking is to use the shock tube and detonating cord (STDC) initiation system, with value adding benefits. In pursuing this global trend, Cementation Mining of South Africa in partnership with SMX have ventured the STDC route. This paper explores the work carried out to date, and identifies a number of benefits to be gained by using the system.

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selectivity was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of a large amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence, selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords: sulphide ores, flotation, flotation depressant, mineralogy.

The kinetics of copper cementation during atmosphere leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in CuSO4-H2SO4 solution was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate, particle size distribution and pulp density. It was found that all these process variables influenced the rate of cementation. A two-stage rate of reaction was observed inmost of the experiments, with the rate of cementation in the initial stage being slower than that of the subsequent second stage. The increased rate of cementation in the second stage was attributed to the enhancing effect of the surface deposit. The cementation process was found to take place by two different rate-controlling mechanisms. At a temperature range of 50?70°C, an activation energy of 74.6 kJ/mol was obtained, indicating a surface reaction controlled process. At higher temperatures (70?80°C) a lower value of activation energy was observed (18.2 kJ/mol), indicative of a process controlled by diffusion through surface layers. The structural characteristics of the cemented deposit could not be determined in the investigated system where the deposit was mixed with the leach solid residue.

A quality characteristic analysed through construction of the Shewhart control chart is required to be normally distributed. In mining applications, this assumption is often violated as many quality characteristics follow skewed or lognormal distribution. In this paper, two methods were investigated using a heuristic approach for setting up the control limits for a skewed population. Based on these approaches a Mode chart, and a Weighted Variance (WV) control charts were constructed. The performance of the proposed methods was compared with the normal based Shewhart method through a case study conducted in a surface mine supplying iron ore to a steel plant. A simulation study was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods over the Shewhart method. The study revealed that the Shewhart control charts generated more out of control alarms compared with the Mode and Weighted Variance control charts for a skewed population of Fe%. The simulation results also revealed that for extremely high skewed population, the WV control chart and Mode control chart provided higher probability of coverage than the Shewhart method; although the detection rate (probability of detection) of out of control condition for these methods was slightly reduced compared with Shewhart method.

The South African Minerals Development Act (?the Act?) has been promulgated and will come into full force and effect once it is gazetted. Thereafter, all Old Order mineral rights will have to be converted into New Order mineral rights within a 5-year period, probably by the end of 2008. The conversion of rights will be achieved only with the demonstrated inclusion of empowerment groups in the conversion applications. In addition to the Act, the first draft of the proposed Royalty Bill (?the Bill?) was released during the week beginning 17 March 2003. Comments on the Bill?s contents had to be submitted before 30 April 2003. The contents were to be considered in terms of applicability and acceptability to the South African minerals industry, where after proposed comments and suggested amendments were to be submitted to the relevant State Treasury office. Specifically referring to the Bill, the general response from the industry is one of concern. Since any royalty is tantamount to a tax, the general feeling is that the current mining taxation rates are already internationally competitive and to increase these effective rates, notably at differing rates depending on commodity type, will have an adverse impact on the South African mining industry. A number of these impacts can be mitigated to some degree, depending on the flexibility of the State to address the major concerns.

A wide range of materials are used in hydraulic backfilling operations and the pipeline flow behaviour of these mixtures varies considerably. It is shown that despite the large differences in constituent materials and flow behaviour, a common approach can be applied to analysing the flow of all hydraulic backfills. This is extended to include a rational design approach for backfill distribution systems. The use and limitations of pipe loop tests as a design aid is discussed. Backfill quality control is identified as a key area where improvement needs to be made to enhance the reliability of backfill system operation.

The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10?15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed, and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

Mr Vegter has analysed, in some depth, the approximations made in the treatment of the kinetic data presented in the original by ourselves (ref.1) and has come to the conclusion that ?under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady-state assumption was inaccurate?. We are acutely aware of the fact that the experimental method adopted does not permit the attainment of a true steady-state in the elution reactor. However, this does not eliminate the attainment of a pseudo steady-state by a suitable choice of the experimental parameters with the accompanying simplification of the analysis of the data with the aim of drawing the reader?s attention to the most important objective of the paper viz. the effect of various operating parameters on the rate of elution of gold.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

The Shewhart [X]?and R charts are still the most popular control charts in use today for continuous monitoring of quality data. However, for these charts to function properly, the underlying assumption of normality and independence of data must be satisfied. When either independence and/or normality of data are not present, which is a common feature of ore quality data, an application of the conventional Shewhart [X]?and R charts may introduce false alarms in the analysis of the data. To address these issues, a guideline is proposed for construction of appropriate univariate and multivariate control charts for a variety of situations. A use of this guideline to a bauxite mine suggested the construction of special cause control chart for the analysis of individual variables namely, Al2O3% and SiO2%; whereas, the multivariate T2 chart based on residuals is proposed for the bivariate analysis of the variables. The case study clearly revealed that without considering the data correlation, one may be in a state of false impression about an out of control condition while using the Shewhart [X]?and R charts for univariate and the Hotelling T2chart for multivariate analysis. To compare the effectiveness of the control charts, specifically the Shewhart [X]?and the special cause control charts, a simulation study was conducted. It was found that the conventional Shewhart chart provided lower probability of coverage than the special cause control chart. It was also revealed that the quality specification of Al2O3% is met as the variation of Al2O3% is well within the specification limits; whereas, it is difficult to meet the quality specification of SiO2% on a regular basis.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk. At first I read this paper with interest, which grew to fascination, and ended up with horror. Such reactions to a supposedly scientific contribution are rare, and I believe the coal mining community must be warned in the strongest possible terms against the recommendations that this paper makes. The paper purports to have assessed statistically two sets of data on methane concentrations recorded in the return air from Turkish longwalls. The first set of data, from their Table I, is reproduced in Table I below. The data have been rearranged in classes to indicate the underlying distribution. While there is only limited data (N=33), the distribution looks as if it could be the sum of two normal distributions with means around 0.5 and 0.8, or possibly a log-normal distribution. What is quite clear is that it is nota single normal distribution.

This paper summarizes important features of a compilation of thermal properties of stratified rocks from Witwatersrand gold mining areas. The database consists of more than 1000 thermal conductivity measurements, more than 700 density measurements, and nearly 100 heat capacity measurements. Most important rock types and stratigraphic units are well represented. Heat capacity does not differ significantly from one rock type to another, and density is relatively uniform although particular rock types are characterized by distinct average values. Different rock types also have distinct thermal conductivities, but this parameter varies by a factor of four to five. Primary factors controlling the thermal properties are mineral composition, degree of metamorphism, and porosity. In addition, the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity and heat capacity of quartzite may significantly decrease the thermal diffusivity of this rock at deep mining levels.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

This work evaluates and characterizes the impact of the support size and mining dilution of a block model in the operation and selection of equipment at an open pit mine. An exploratory analysis and geostatistical modelling of the grades assayed on a set of drill hole samples is performed, which allows constructing a grade model on a dense grid by means of a conditional simulation. The grades are then averaged to greater selective mining unit supports in order to proceed with the study and methodology. First, the metal-tonnage curves are used to analyse the loss of selectivity on the in situ resources caused by a change of support. Concerning the ore reserves and their mining sequence, defined in the pit optimization and analysis process, the same curves prove that the loss of selectivity is more accentuated. Second, the importance of the block boundary dilution produced during mining operations is assessed. Its value depends on the amount of ore in contact with waste, on the loading error of the equipment and on the ore loss/waste dilution criterion assumed by the planner. The dilution percentage and the differences between waste and ore grades become higher when the block size decreases. For these reasons, considering the dilution in the production plans makes mining a small support more constraining. An adequate delimitation of the orebody can improve the mining selectivity, leading to greater income. Finally, a study of the increase in mining cost that provides a zero difference in NPV between the different block size options is carried out, in order to determine the maximum increase in mining costs for which it remains profitable to mine at a smaller block size. Combustion and thermal NOx formation have been modelled using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial code Fluent 6.1. The aim was to predict and give a better understanding of the combustion in electric arc furnaces for the production of ferro-silicon and silicon metal. Another important objective was to assess the impact of a number of operating parameters on the NOx formation. The CFD tools used are de-scribed with a special focus on models for species and turbulence transport. Sensitivity studies have been carried out to study the influence of several parameters: sub-models, process gas composition and distribution at the charge surface and influence of the presence of SiO. The main conclusions are: ?Using the combination of a realistic design, boundary conditions and models, the simulated NOx level is in quantitative agreement with measurements. The presence of water vapor is particularly important because of its influence on the specific heat of the mixture and resulting temperature. ?Release of significant amounts of SiO from the charge surface results in an important increase of NOx, even if we applied a simplified combustion model for SiO gas. However, because of lack of thermal and compositional data for blowing situations (when SiO flows directly from the arc cavity through open channels to the charge surface), no quantitative validation is possible. The way SiO is distributed (uniformly or as a jet) has a limited impact on the result in our computations.

Block model estimates are commonly calculated by the well-established technique of kriging. The mathematics are well established, but implementation details require site-specific considerations. Checking and measuring the performance of the estimates is important to ensure the block model is suitable for its intended purpose. There are different criteria for long-term planning and short-term planning. The implementation of kriging should be checked with cross-validation and assessed for conditional bias and departure from theoretical optimality with the calculation of kriging efficiency. A new expression of kriging efficiency, which compares the kriging variance with the theoretically optimal kriging variance, is developed to aid in this assessment. The assessment tools presented here can be applied in a number of situations; however, ordinary kriging with a reasonably large search performs well in most cases.

The paper describes the construction of 5 plugs to resist high water heads at depth within the South Deep Gold Mine, Randfontein, South Africa. A total of 20 segments were involved to create these plugs, which were 7.5 m long at the 58 Level and 6.25 m long at the50 Level. Emphasis is placed on the QA/QC and verification methods, which were developed and governed all phases of the work, from initial rock preparation and pregrouting through to the final grout tightening of the rock/plug interface and the surrounding rock. This paper is one in a series of papers detailing other aspects of the project, which was constructed largely between May 2001 and August 2003.
