This work is concerned with studying possible reactions in the ilmenite furnace which may control the product quality of both slag and metal. Two different approaches were followed: comparing actual furnace slag compositions with the calculated equilibrium values and using commercial oxygen probes to measure the effective partial oxygen pressure in the slag and metal. It appears from a comparison of actual furnace slag compositions (in terms of the distribution coefficient of vanadium) with equilibrium values, that the TiO1.5-TiO2reaction may fix the effective partial oxygen pressure for the vanadium reaction. This possibility was tested using commercial oxygen probes (traditionally applied during steelmaking) to measure the effective oxygen partial pressure of both the slag and liquid iron in Iscor?s 3MVA pilot plant ilmenite furnace. From these measurements, it appears that commercial oxygen probes containing zirconia solid electrolytes can be used to measure the effective oxygen potential of both the slag and liquid iron. This oxygen activity correlates well with the FeO content of the slag. The results, furthermore, clearly illustrate that equilibrium conditions are not attained in the ilmenite furnace during the production of high titania slags, since the effective oxygen potential of slag and metal differ substantially.

In this study, the general case of semi-batch precipitation of nickel hydroxide, Ni(OH)2, is modelled. In practical terms, this precipitation may occur at high ionic strengths, and therefore the model for solution chemistry requires a thermodynamic model that is applicable for these non-ideal systems. The activity coefficient model used is the ELEC-NRTL. The simulation of the solution chemistry is performed using AspenPlusTM, which is a steady-state process simulation program. This allows for rigorous evaluation of the solution speciation, and hence the degree of supersaturation which dictates the precipitation kinetics. The solution chemistry provides the basis for predicting the formation of solids. The model consists of a solution chemistry part and a solids formation part. The inputs to the model include the initial concentrations of the streams entering the reactor, kinetic parameters for the precipitation processes, and a particle size distribution obtained from experiments. The solids formation part of the model employs the method of moments for the evaluation of the population balance. The population balance accounts for total particle number, and the formation and increase in size of particles across the entire particle size range. This balance requires kinetic parameters for the processes of nucleation, growth and agglomeration. Using optimization routines inherent in AspenPlusTM, parameters for the rate of nucleation, growth and agglomeration may be extracted from experimental particle size distributions. These are then used in the model to extrapolate to other conditions. Once an understanding of the kinetics of the precipitation processes is gained, the model provides a predictive tool for optimization of these kinetics, in order to increase the overall particle size and therefore improve solid-liquid separation. The work is deemed to be significant as it sheds some light on solids formation processes involved in precipitation?including nucleation, growth and aggregation?and develops a predictive modelling tool applicable to solutions of high ionic strength. We argue that this dewatering of suspensions is affected significantly by particle size distribution and surface properties of the solids formed by precipitation. This modelling tool should facilitate the design of solids formation processes where downstream dewatering is enhanced.

To determine the effect of F ions in the molten alkali silicate systems on their structures, quenched Na2O-SiO2-NaF systems were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. The systematic increase of 1100 cm-1band intensity in the Raman spectra of the silicate melts accompanying the replacement of F for O provides the evidence for concomitant polymerization of melts. From the molecular dynamics simulation, it was confirmed that most of substituted F was mainly coordinated to Na+ ions but not Si4+ions. These results were consistent with the mechanism in which F associated with otherwise network-modifying Na rather than with network-forming Si. Since F was associated to Na+ ions, the replace of O ion by two F ions promote the polymerization of silicate melts. Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key aspect of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization, and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

The use of copper cooling elements to enhance refractory lining life in pyrometallurgical vessels is common in modern furnace design. Copper elements typically incorporate a base panel with cast in cooling passages and an integral extended surface (formed of pins, fins or similar) onto which suitable refractory material is cast. The metallic, conducting parts are located towards the cold face of the lining, with the refractory material interposing between the coolers and the process. The coolers are designed to arrest wear of the refractory material by freezing a layer of slag or partially reacted material onto the hot face, thereby rendering the lining inert to further attack [1]. These coolers have achieved success in new furnaces and relining of existing vessels. The freeze layer is prone to mechanical damage during operational and process instability. The coolers must be capable of extracting the additional heat flux under upset conditions to facilitate rapid self-repair of the freeze layer and prevent further refractory wear in the intermittently exposed areas. However, operational experience has shown that the high heat flux capabilities of the copper coolers have some disadvantages, especially in processes producing vapours which form corrosive compounds when condensing onto the cold surfaces of the coolers. When corrosive conditions develop, the entire composite will fail due to loss of structural integrity, and as a result of leaks from the cooling water passages. This paper describes recent developments in the approach to the design and manufacture of copper cooler panels customized to achieve specified heat fluxes and temperature profiles, thereby reducing the formation of corrosion mechanisms in applications with corrosive gaseous environments and enhancing refractory lining life. Condensation formation prevention is achieved by adjusting the geometry of the cooler and selection of suitable materials of construction.

The slags produced by the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are based on the system ZnO-?FeO?-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2. The slag chemistry is important to the process since it determines the fluxing practice and the operating temperature of the furnace required to produce fluid slag. The paper presents the results of the first systematic experimental investigation of these ZnO-containing slags in equilibrium with metallic iron, and provides information on the primary phase fields and liquidus temperatures in these slags over the range of compositions used in ISP practice. A feature of the slags is the presence of alumina, which has a major influence instabilizing the spinel phase. This information presented in the form of pseudo-ternary sections ZnO-?FeO?-(Al2O3+CaO+SiO2) enabling the data to be readily used by plant engineers. The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese containing stainless steels. Gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activity of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600°C which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600°C. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient repression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600°C. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag.

The thermal state in submerged-arc furnaces (S.A.F.) producing ferro alloys is important for the conditions of both the grade of alloy produced as well as specific energy consumption. The temperature profile in the S.A.F. is affected by the endothermic chemical reactions and the rate of gas evolution. The gas evolution commences at about 900 C due to the reduction of iron in the ore. A first-principle-based 2-D model has been developed to predict the temperature profile in the furnace. In this study, four ores of different grades have been considered in order to simulate the thermal profile in the S.A.F. The influence of the composition of the ore on the thermal profile and its significance in rationalisation of charge distribution to optimise the process are discussed.

The practice of pumping gases which inhibit combustion for purposes of controlling or extinguishing mine fires is now universally accepted. The practice has been used many times in coal mines in India and the experiences are reviewed. The procedures relating to a membrane based nitrogen generator and to a combustion gases generator are described. The physical properties, practical requirements and economic implications of using different gases is briefly reviewed. Some aspects of the practice as related to mine fires in certain collieries in other countries are dealt with.

The kinetic and thermodynamic efficiencies of chromium recovery from the slag in an AOD process during the slag de-oxidation period with ferrosilicon is a complex process affected by slag basicity, temperature, the dissolution kinetics of the reducing agents, and intermixing of the slag/metal/alloy addition phases within the vessel. The present work focused on a study and simulation of the fluid dynamics and mixing behaviour of ferrosilicon additions in the AOD process for the production of stainless steel. In order to visualize the mixing behaviour, a two dimensional slice model of an AOD vessel was first built and filled with ZnCl2solution and then covered with silicone oil in order to represent the bulk liquid steel and slag phases, respectively. The injection of argon/oxygen process gases was simulated using air or helium. Particle trajectories and intermixing of the phases was monitored with a high-speed camera. To simulate the 75FeSi additions, glass spheres were used. A three-dimensional version of the AOD model was then constructed in order to confirm the adequacy of the slice model. Similar particle mixing behaviour was observed. Both models demonstrated that the ascending gas/liquid plume created two asymmetric mixing zones: a smaller rapidly re-circulating mixing zone adjacent to the side-wall locating the tuyere(s), and a larger mixing zone in the main part of the vessel. The process efficiency during the reduction period is governed by the thermal behaviour of ferroalloy as well as the mixing efficiency in the main large mixing zone. To enhance the recovery efficiency for chromium, small Fe-Si particles are suggested, given their wide distribution within the slag phase, and their large interfacial areas and rapid melting times for Cr2O3reduction from the slag. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering)degree Identification of non-linear systems can be a daunting task and in the process industries the problem is complicated considerably by the presence of noise from various sources, non-stationarity of the data and intermittence, such as observed in particulate flows. Traditional methods, such as frequency analysis and linear model-ling do not handle these systems well. Similar problems arise with the application of non-linear theory developed over the last few decades, where much of the analysis depends on embedding of the data in a phase space or pseudophase space, since these methods were not originally designed to deal with noisy systems. In contrast, singular spectrum analysis is a method which can be used to identify structure and distinguish noise from important information in multivariate data, such as the trajectory matrices of time series measurements. It provides an orthogonal basis onto which the data can be transformed, so that components of the time series can be investigated individually. With Monte Carlo methods, the components can be compared with those from linear surrogate data in order to identify possibly non-linearities in the data. In this paper, this versatile technique is briefly explained and illustrated by means of case studies.

There are few data on the composition of discard coal in South Africa, and no overall view of the discards for the entire industry. As a result of work on coal qualities in South Africa, a database was established which enabled a good estimate to be made of the composition of the discard from every mine. The data are presented in the form of histograms of ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon content of the 43 million tons of material which were discarded in 1990. The results are discussed in terms of the closeness of the composition of much of the discard material to presently used power station coal. It is concluded that it is mainly developments in equipment, particularly fluidized bed boilers, which inhibit the wider use of discard coal. However, other factors must be noted, including the relatively high sulphur content of the discards, and the fact that even with the most careful storage the material ages and may become unusable after about 15 years.

During an intense and accurate study of initiation systems used on an AngloGold mine, Mine A, poor drilling practices were revealed. Graphic results of all actual measurements taken are shown below. [ ] Accurate drilling of shot holes will determine whether a mining operation is payable or not and at what pay limit mining can take place. Losing 30 cm of a potential 120 cm-hole length will result in a number of consequences, i.e.: ?Higher stoping costs ?Drilling of one shot hole twice in every five shifts ?Increased explosive cost as a result ?Excess stress on hangingwall and footwall due to bad face shape ?Excessive blast damage before the area is worked out. No wonder we have such a high-risk operation. Drilling accuracy is crucial to the profitability on any mine as profits are directly related to the quality and utilization of the drilled shot holes.

Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive material in the earth?s crust. Geological processes have resulted in concentration of uranium into ore mined for its gold content in South Africa. This uranium is present in the form of discrete particles of uranium minerals, generally oxides, which are normally insoluble. Chemical and physical processes during gold mining and extraction, particularly when carried out in conjunction with uranium extraction and sulphuric acid manufacture, act on the uranium minerals and the radioactive decay products of uranium. This may result insignificant accumulations of radioactive materials in certain parts of the process. There are a number of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth?s crust, such as Uranium-235, Thorium-232, andPotassium-40. This paper focuses on Uranium-238, together with its decay products, and how they affect the gold mines. Water plays a significant role in the redistribution of radionuclides, both as a physical transport medium, and as a solvent in which chemical reactions take place.

In this paper the origins of the mortar intruded concrete concept and its development and application in the construction of watertight bulkheads in South Africa are described. The events leading to the commissioning and execution of the West Driefontein Experimental Plug and the Virginia/Merriespruit Boundary Plugs, and their roles in the proving of the technique, follow. The development of the first Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines Code of Practice for Mortar Intrusion Concrete for Underground Plugs and Bulkheads, Johannesburg, November 1962,is explained. The saga of the October 1968 flood and subsequent salvage of the West Driefontein Gold Mine is recounted. The paper concludes with mention of the validation programme carried out for the Placer Dome Western Areas Joint Venture and their South Deep water barrier programme.

ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. Diese Software enthält im Allgemeinen unterschiedliche Arten der materiellen Modelle. Von den Resultaten der numerischen Simulation wurde das Bestehen von Stärke Anisotrophie beobachtet. Die Stärke Anisotrophie also erreicht ist mit den experimentellen Werten verglichen worden, die von Singh et al. (2002) berichtet werden. Singh et autres (2002) ont effectué les essais étendus sur les matériaux modèles joints avec plusieurs configurations communes. Les résultats de cette étude expérimentale ont été employés pour valider le comportement de résistance du modèle numérique de la masse de bloc développé en utilisant le logiciel professionnellement disponible. Ce logiciel contient fondamentalement différents genres de modèles matériels. Des résultats de la simulation numérique on a observé l'existence de l'anisotropie de force. L'anisotropie de force ainsi obtenu a été comparée aux valeurs expérimentales rapportées par Singh et autres (2002). Les courbes anisotropes dans les deux cas sont en U avec la base plate. Elles montrent la bonne concordance dans le mode coulissant de la zone d'échec en lequel la inclination ß (= 90° - ?) du joint placez-Je le mensonge entre 20° à 40° pour tous les cas d'enclencher.
