A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise-induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise- induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise-induced hearing loss. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard SecoS215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock debris, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via an exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. Generally, monitoring of refractory furnace linings is of interest to the metallurgical industry. The main issues are to control wear of the furnace lining and break out of molten metal. Penetration of molten metal through the lining can cause considerable damage to equipment in the vicinity of the furnace and endanger operators. Rebuilding of a furnace lining is expensive, mainly because it stops production, but also because the lining materials are expensive. Here, two methods for monitoring the lining of a smelting furnace are presented. The methods are based on monitoring of the temperature distribution in the lining, more specific monitoring an isotherm in the lining. One method is based on the assumption of unidirectional heat flow locally, reducing the problem to a set of one-dimensional heat conduction problems. The other method is based on inverse heat conduction. In this context inverse heat conduction means estimating the wear from temperature measurements using mathematical optimization techniques. The study is based on the ilmenite smelting furnace at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS. Some results from real temperature measurements and real observations from the ilmenite smelting furnaces is presented.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

Ongoing Outokumpu development in Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning Technology, involving all aspects of process chemistry, equipment and control, extends over a period of close to 30 years. The development in SX started with molybdenum and rhenium, continued with zinc, manganese, cobalt and nickel and is now focusing on copper. The OutoCompact VSF? SX concept, which has been recently introduced, is a honed version of earlier VSF? technology. The Outokumpu VSF? ("Vertical Smooth Flow") SX package includes the DOP ("Dispersion Overflow Pump") units, the Spirok Mixers, the OutoCompact Settlers including their DDG ("Dispersion Depletor Gate") fences and tank farm equipment such as the LOS ("Loaded Organic Scrubbing") tank as well as the CEP ("Copper Electrolyte Purifying") tank. Although the VSF? SX package can be implemented according to several optional lay-outs, the so-called Track version has lately been introduced to the advantage of new plants. The new OutoCompact SX technology decreases the footprint of future VSF? plants. The lay-out, including plant size flexibility, have further been improved by Outokumpu?s new OutoReverse settler technology. Two of several SX plants currently under construction rely on reverse settlers in order to maximize their performance. The Outokumpu EW technology includes process know-how as well as proprietary equipment. The copper EW package consists of permanent stainless steel cathodes based on wax-less technology and lead anodes utilising polymer concrete cells with the double contact bus bar system and ventilation hoods fitted for efficient mist control. The lifting of cell hoods, as well as cathode washing, is done by the cathode pulling crane. Proper electrolyte flows and matching current density further ensure high productivity of LME grade copper cathodes.

The paper provides a brief review of a multivariate uniform conditioning and a localized multivariate uniform conditioning (LMUC) technique, and presents a production reconciliation case study based on a porphyry copper-gold deposit in Peru. The reconciliation study compares the longterm LMUC mineral resources model (typical of new mining projects, which are invariably based on drilling data on a relatively large grid) to the corresponding production blast-hole grade control model, as well as the final plant production.

Despite the wealth of information available on phase equilibria of oxide systems there remainmany gaps and inconsistencies in our knowledge base. From an industry perspective there is anongoing need to adequately describe the phase chemistry of slag systems in order to optimizeprocess performance and improve productivity. Since this chemical behaviour cannot be predictedfrom first principles it follows there is also an ongoing need for accurate experimental data. The advances made in recent years in the capabilities of sophisticated analytical and measurement equipment have made it possible to develop new experimental techniques for the direct determination of phase equilibria in low order and complex multi-component slag systems. In addition the development of powerful computer modelling tools makes it possible to provide more comprehensive descriptions of the phase chemistry, to present the information in a range of perspectives, and to critically analyse the various types of related thermodynamic and structural information available. This review provides an overview of the types of information that can be used to determine phase equilibria in slags systems, analyses the influence of uncertainty and the relative importance of these types of data, and describes the advantages and limitations of the various experimental techniques that can be employed to obtain this information. Examples of recent studies are provided that demonstrate how an integrated approach to the determination of phase equilibria in complex systems, involving the use of targeted experimental studies and systematic thermodynamic model development, can lead to a better utilization of our current research capabilities and resources and more accurate descriptions of these systems. Several Rockmass classification systems have been developed and used in Civil Engineering design and for underground mining operations. Some of these rockmass classification systems have been modified and used in the South African coal mining industry to quantify descriptive geological information for use in coal mine design and roof support selection. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed in the USA has been investigated in detail as part of the study. Advantages and disadvantages of the system have been identified by means of underground and surface borehole testing. Investigations into the rating systems in South Africa found that most of the rating systems used in the South African coal mining industry are for planning purposes, and are conducted on borehole cores. This study also highlighted that the rating systems being used are based on geology, and that the human factor plays a major role in the rating systems. To overcome these problems, all the classification systems used in South African coal mines have been benchmarked against impact splitting technique and documented. The best elements of these systems are combined into a new standard system that will be easily used by all mine geologists and rock mechanics engineers. Plusieurs systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été développés et utilisés dans le Génie Civil et pour les opérations d'exploitation minière souterraine. Certains de ces systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été modifiés et utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine pour quantifier l'information géologique descriptive utilisée dans la conception de mines de charbon et la sélection de soutènement du toit. Le système d'Evaluation de Toit de Mine de Charbon (CMRR) développé aux USA a été examiné en détail, comme part de l'étude présente. Tests en surface de trous de mine ont permis d'identifier les avantages et inconvénients du système. Une étude des systèmes d'évaluation en Afrique du Sud a révélé que la plupart des systèmes d'évaluation utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine sont utilisés pour la planification, et sont menés sur les carottes de trous de mine. L'étude présente a aussi souligné que les systèmes d'évaluation utilisés sont basés sur la géologie, et que le facteur humain joue un rôle majeur dans les systèmes d'évaluation. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, tous les systèmes de classification utilisés en Afrique du Sud ont été référencés en termes de technique de fissuration sur choc, et documentés. Les meilleurs éléments de ces systèmes sont combinés dans un nouveau système standard qui sera utilisé aisément par tous les géologues de mine et les ingénieurs miniers. Verschiedene Gesteinsmassenklassifikationssysteme wurden entwickelt und kamen im Design für Hoch- und Tiefbau und Untertageabbau zum Einsatz. Einige dieser Gesteinsmassen-klassifikationssysteme wurden modifiziert und sind in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie in Verwendung, um beschreibende geologische Informationen für die Anwendung im Design von Kohlebergwerken und der Firstabstützungsauswahl quantitativ zu beschreiben. Das in den USA entwickelte Kohlengrubenfirstbewertungssystem (CMRR) wurde als Teil der Studie im Detail untersucht. Vorteile und Nachteile des Systems sind mittels der Untergrund- und Oberflächenbohrlochprüfung gekennzeichnet worden. Prüfungen der Bewertungssysteme in Südafrika ergaben, daß die meisten Bewertungssysteme die in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie benutzt werden, Planungszwecken dienen und werden anhand von Bohrlochkernen durchgeführt. Diese Studie hob auch hervor, daß die verwendeten Bewertungssysteme auf Geologie basieren und daß der menschliche Faktor eine Hauptrolle in den Bewertungssystemen spielt. Um diese Probleme zu überwinden, wurden alle in südafrikanischen Kohlengruben benutzte Klassifizierungssysteme vergleichsweise in Hinblick auf Spaltschlagtechnik überprüft und dokumentiert. Die besten Elemente dieser Systeme werden in ein neues Standardsystem kombiniert, das leicht von allen Grubengeologen und von Gebirgsmechanikingenieuren benutzt werden kann.

"The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. Some of the changes and their reasons are discussed. INTRODUCTION The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Rreserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The proposed 2016 update is not significantly different from previous versions of the Code. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting. However, reporting may be unclear, ambiguous, selective, obscure, distorted or unintelligible. Part of the purpose of the update is to provide better guidelines to Competent Persons (CPs) to ensure that the material information is being reported and that reporting is transparent in accordance with the guidelines of the Code. The information provided should, as required by the Code, be adequate to inform the “reader/investor or potential investor to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information”. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) highlights the importance of the reporting Codes, as provided from a quote from their website (www.crirsco.com): The mining industry is a vital contributor to national and global economies. It is a truly international business that depends on the trust and confidence of investors and other stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being. Unlike many other industries, it is based on depleting mineral assets, the knowledge of which is important prior to the commencement of extraction. It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the level of trust necessary to underpin its activities."

We have conducted a stress analysis of overcoring stress measurements undertaken at the Zedex Test Site (ZTS) in the Äspö HRL, Sweden. Two different types of overcoring cells have been used at the site: the 9-gauge Borre Probe (CSIR-type) and the 12-gauge CSIRO HI cell. Inversion programs based on the least-squares criterion were developed and calibrated. The primary and secondary stress field in the ZTS were back-calculated using strain data from individual cells as well as from combining data from both cells. We propose that the combination of strain data from the two cells significantly improves the determination of the stress field. A striking result is the good agreement between the re-analysed overcoring data and the existing hydraulic fracturing data. The deviations for the horizontal stresses between the re-analyzed overcoring data and the existing hydraulic fracturing data are approximately 3 MPa. The deviation in the orientation of maximum horizontal stress is approximately 10-20°. Nous avons analysé les résultats de mesures de contrainte par surcarottage réalisées sur le site Zedex, du laboratoire souterrain HRL d’Aspö, en suède. Deux types de cellule de mesure ont été utilisés sur ce site : la cellule à 9 jauges (du type CSIR) et la cellule à 12 jauges (du type CSIRO HI). Un programme d’inversion mettant en œuvre une norme par moindres carrés a été développé et validé. Les champs de contrainte primaires et secondaires du site Zedex ont été évalués d’une part en considérant chaque mesure isolément, d’autre part en intégrant l’ensemble des données de déformation dans une inversion unique. Nos résultats suggèrent que l‘association des diverses mesures dans une intégration unique améliore nettement la détermination du champ de contrainte. Un résultat intéressant est le bon accord entre ces nouveaux résultats et les résultats des mesures par fracturation hydraulique. Les écarts sur l’amplitude des contraintes horizontales est de l’ordre de 3 Mpa, les écarts sur les orientations de l’ordre de 10-20°. Auf dem Zedex Test Gelände im Äspö Festgesteinslabor (HRL) wurde eine Spannungsanalyse mittels Overcoring Spannungsmessungen durchgeführt. Hierzu wurden zwei verschiedene Methoden verwendet: das 9-kanal Borre Gerät (CSIR- Ausführung) und die 12-Kanal CSIRO HI Zelle. Inversionsprogramme, die auf dem “least-squares”- Kriterium basieren, wurden entwickelt und kalibriert. Das primäre und sekundäre Spannungsfeld des Zedex Test Geländes wurde sowohl aus Verformungsdaten individueller Zellen als auch aus Kombination beider Zellen ermittelt. Wir nehmen an, daß die Kombination der Messergebnisse beider Geräte die Bestimmung des Spannungsfeldes signifikant verbessert. Überzeugender Beweis hierfür ist die gute Übereinstimmung der überprüften Overcoring Daten und Ergebnisse aus existierenden Hydraulic Fracturing Versuchen. Die Abweichungen der horizontalen Spannungen aus beiden Datensätzen ist etwa 3 MPa und Abweichungen der Orientierung der größten Horizontalspannung liegen bei etwa 10-20°.

Some 30 years ago exposure to dense-medium separation in South Africa, culminated in the adaptation of the process for the treatment of -0.5 mm fines. The first commercial plant at Greenside Colliery apparently operated for some 18 years. Three further plants followed, including one treating tin ore. It is gratifying to learn, therefore, that there is renewed interest. The objective of making the process easier to operate (?more practical??) is commendable but the cumbersome technical approach could be counter productive. Perhaps a brief outline of the original thinking might be helpful when analysing the problem.

After the global financial crisis of 2008, African mining is entering anew phase of development. The rapid withdrawal of emerging market funding from the critical exploration and development industries provided a hiatus in funding, a gap which was quickly filled by Chinese and other Asian investors. While the continent is still economically dependent on its extractive industries, the prevalence of Dutch Disease has undermined Africa?s ability to benefit fully from its mining, oil, and gas industries. While the extractive industries are closely related to many of the more fragile and failed states in Africa, it is equally true that the strongest states in Africa have mining-based economies. This paper explores the possible linkages between mining, strong and weak political economies, and poverty in Africa. It draws the conclusion that neither Dutch Disease nor Resource Course is a given in resource-endowed countries, and that it can be avoided if the mining economies in these countries are actively integrated into their respective broader economies and used to foster economic diversification. The author asserts that given the capacity constraints of many African governments, it is contingent on mining companies to become integrally involved in catalysing diversification around their infrastructure and supply chains.

Keywords: copper, concentrate drying, steam dryer, dryers By placing additional demands on energy and gas flow, the moisture content of a copper concentrate has an adverse effect on the smelting process. Different drying technologies, such as directly heated rotary dryers, flash dryers, and steam dryers, are available to solve this problem. The energy requirements of and off-gas generated from different dryer types are compared. The performance of the steam dryer was found to be superior to that of the others. In particular, the rotary steam dryer and its benefits are discussed. Structural properties confer an advantage on the rotary steam dryer, for wear on tube elements is eliminated, and drying efficiency is improved. If steam is available, the rotary steam dryer is an excellent choice for drying copper concentrates.

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords- Sulphide ores, Flotation, Flotation depressant, Mineralogy.

It concludes that Mufulira Mine has become the first mine in Zambia to convert 100% of its stoping to ?Smartdets?, because the Mine?s management was prepared to look beyond the unit cost of product and were ready to look at the broader picture of cost effectiveness and increased productivity.

The development of feedforward semi-empirical control models for furnaces and the evaluation of mass balances are based on plant data. The models can only be as good as the data and it is therefore required to know the inherent uncertainty associated with the plant data. This uncertainty stems mainly from the fact that the slag, alloy or dust, have a distributed nature that depends on the degree of mixedness. It is commonly accepted that melts from open bath furnaces are well-mixed, and submerged arc furnaces less so. The impact of this assumption is significant, as a reasonably homogeneous melt could be represented by one sample only. As so much of metallurgical control depends on the assay information of the alloy and slag melts from furnaces, it was decided to characterise the possible variation in melt chemistry and temperature. Sampling campaigns and continuous temperature measurement of the melts were performed for different alloy and slag taps at a major ferrochrome producer. Both a submerged arc furnace and open arc furnace are evaluated in this way, by way of comparison. The slags of both open arc and submerged arc furnaces were found to be of similar degrees of homogeneity, with much spatial variance in the reducible iron and chromium oxides. However, it was found that the alloy melts deriving from open arc furnaces were significantly less homogeneous than the alloy derived from submerged arc furnace alloy production. The compositional variance could be related to the furnace operating conditions and it affects both metallurgical accounting and process control. In all cases it was found that the variance in melt solute components are larger than can be ascribed to analysis instrument error. It will be shown how this predetermined variance in melt composition could be included in process modelling and control.

An investigation was undertaken to ascertain the suitability of four selected low grade, South African coals for gasification in a bubbling fluidized bed for production of synthesis gas and for the development of integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC). This study consisted of the characterization of the coals, laboratory evaluation of intrinsic reactivity, and experimentation with a pilot-plant fluidized bed gasifier. Results of the characterization experiments show that the selected coals are high in ash, rich in inertinites, very dense (low porosity), with low caking indices and high ash fusion temperatures. Reactivity measurements with a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), under reaction rate controlling conditions with carbon dioxide, showed that the reactivity of the coal chars decreases with increase in rank of the coal, as expressed by the vitrinite random reflectance and carbon content of the parent coals. The fixed carbon conversion achieved in the fluidized bed gasifier also correlates well with the rank parameter of the coal, with higher conversions being obtained with the lower rank coals. Thermal shattering and attrition of the coal particles produce significant amounts of fines, which correlate with the grindability indices, and no agglomeration (non-caking) was observed. It is concluded that fluidized bed gasifiers are able to utilize typical low grade, high ash South African coals for synthesis gas production and for inclusion in integrated gasification combined cycles for power generation.

At the Palabora Mine, the transition to caving 400 m below the bottom of the 800 m deep pit resulted in a slope failure of the North wall that began in 2003, and is still mobile. This failure can be explained by the daylighting into the cave zone of a prominent joint set. The failure was modelled by the 3-dimensional code 3DEC, which is capable of modelling the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuum materials with large displacement.

The Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering (SBS) Technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into a smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. One of the main elements in successful furnace operation is the control of gas flows inside the furnace, giving improved temperature distribution in the bed during the process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) gives excellent opportunities for studying these phenomena. An investigation using CFD can be performed relatively fast. For example, implications of different configurations can be studied within a day and an optimum design chosen. Therefore, Outokumpu Technology has developed a Steel Belt Sintering Model (SBSM), which takes advantage of a commercial CFD code. Each main physicochemical event occurring in a steel belt sintering furnace is incorporated independently in the SBS model as a sub-model, enabling every event to be studied separately. The commercial CFD code solves mass, momentum, species and energy equations for determination of the gas flow, composition and temperature. In addition, the Outokumpu SBSM takes into account the moving pellet bed, drying of pellets interms of water content, coke combustion, oxidation and reduction of chromite and the decomposition of carbonates and silicates. During the development of the model, numerous laboratory-scale tests were performed. The sub-models were validated against the laboratory tests. The reliability of the Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering Model was validated against a pilot-scale batch-sintering furnace by comparing the modelling results against measurements. The aim of this paper is to give a brief presentation of the Outokumpu steel belt sintering model by showing some general modelling examples. Emphasis has been placed on demonstrating some of the main features of the model.

Outsourcing? and ?sub-contracting? have become buzzwords in recent years, as SA industry becomes increasingly exposed to the global economy, and global competitiveness. In its effort to ?catch up? after years of relative isolation, there is a concerted effort to learn from global ?best practice?, in order for South African companies, and the SA economy, to become ?winners?. There seems nothing wrong with this approach at face value. Companies need to compete and be profitable if they are to remain in business. Failure will in the end mean bankruptcy, and the loss of jobs. However, if one interrogates the precise practices, and their implications for all concerned?not just shareholders and employers, but workers, communities, the environment, future generations, the national economy?then the picture can change dramatically. ?Best practice? for whom?

The characterization of platinum group minerals (PGMs) from concentrator flotation circuits provides valuable information towards understanding PGM recovery under given milling and flotation conditions. Additional mineralogical characterization also provides information on ore variability, which may affect recovery. Considering the low grades involved, automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of PGMs has enabled relatively quick analyses, compared with older, time consuming and less accurate optical microscopy methods. Over the years, parameters, such as species, size distribution, liberation, gangue and base metal sulfide (BMS) associations, have been used to characterize the PGMs in a process mineralogical context, to aid metallurgical interpretation. This paper considers whether flotation indices determined for PGMs can be empirically validated, using initial results from analysis of PGMs in a concentrate bank from a South African concentrator treating UG2 ore from the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The aim is to determine whether floatability is adequately described by these parameters, or whether other mineralogical factors must be considered when assessing PGM floatability, and hence accounting for recovery vs. losses to tails. The data obtained to date, show that flotation parameters (including liberation index, BMS/gangue relationships and size distribution) have merits where large changes in PGM concentration occur, as observed in the first four cells of the concentrate bank. Larger data sets, however, are required to assess floatability, particularly where concentrate cell grades are similar, as observed in the last six cells of the concentrate bank. Furthermore, the floatability indices could be enhanced by the incorporation of selected associated gangue mineral information, chief amongst these being the content and mode of occurrence of naturally floatable talc and associated orthopyroxene.
