The ferroalloy market is characterized by a very long communication distance between the consumer and the producer. This has created a situation where it has been difficult to change ferroalloy properties. With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. Future development of kimberlite mines is now focused on mining at deeper levels. The consequences are increased difficulty and costs of the mining operations. The decisions on investments require accurate resource evaluation and quantification of the risk. In the decision process the first step consists in choosing the number of boreholes sampling the pipe relative to the level of uncertainty that can be accepted. The uncertainty in the volumes of rocks of different types can be assessed as soon as we can estimate these volumes from a given borehole layout and calculate the error by means of its variance for instance. In theory this can be achieved by using geostatistical techniques (‘transitive theory’), but in practice the calculation of the error on volumes can be achieved in very particular cases, assuming some regular sampling patterns. A different approach has been chosen based on simulations, giving maximum flexibility to reproduce the reality of the sampling procedure. The idea is to simulate the geometry of several ‘possible’ pipes with their internal geology and estimate them by kriging. Several experimental errors are obtained on which risk analysis can be performed. The aim is to find a feasible method to perform the simulations with reasonable chance to correctly represent the reality, without data on the pipe extension. The methodology applied is based on some hypotheses that can be assessed by the geologist as well as by the geostatistician. The procedure assumes a geological model based on current knowledge including appropriate geostatistical variation. What make these simulations specific and powerful in this case comes from the fact that the boundaries between the different rock-types can be simulated using a transformation of the real 3D space into a 2D space defined by means of polar coordinates. Ultimate transformations to account for smoother variations with morphological transformations allow the generation of realistic pipe geometries on which sampling pattern can be used to evaluate the estimation errors. By estimating the simulated pipe geometries with different boreholes layouts a risk curve expressing the uncertainty in the volumes of the different rock-types versus the number of holes can be developed.

Middleburg Ferrochrome (MFC), a company in Samancor Chrome, commissioned a new ferrochrome smelter in March 2009. This is a 60 MW DC-arc furnace with a DC power supply for the smelting of Transvaal chromite ore fines. With the benefit of 12 years' experience with this technology while operating a 44 MW DC-arc furnace, MFC mitigated all known challenges and considered up-scaling risk in the new plant, which had a rapid ramp-up to full power in 02 of 2009. Good operating practices, as made possible by robust equipment selection, including a thyristor rectifier set of proven technology, and operation with optimal slag chemistry, leads to a safe and effective plant operation. With the optimized furnace design and a correctly sized power conditioning system, using only standard (static) harmonic filters and a correctly sized smoothing reactor, the arc furnace is not a 'dirty load' for the utility, staying well within IEC limits for power quality. A patented arc compensation system is installed and allows for full arc position control (to compensate for magnetic field induced arc deflection) so that a symmetrical crucible is maintained, significantly benefiting refractory life. The principal benefits gained from the MFC process is the fact that ore fines are processed, without metallurgical coke, and higher chrome recoveries are achieved compared to other smelting technologies when using a DC open arc for smelting. Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. The work reported in this paper is part of a current MSc research study at the University of the Witwatersrand.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimetre precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many mines in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Zambia, Chile and the United States. Greater than 70 rock falls and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tonnes) have been monitored, and on every occasion precursor ?warning? movements were recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines.

The utilization of software is now inherent to virtually every activity along the mining value chain. However, apart from the software survey done by Gibbs in the 1990s and work on the extent of diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT) in the South African platinum sector by Mugodi and Fleming in 2003, the nature and extent of software utilization in the South African mining industry has never been evaluated. The Mine Planning, Optimisation and Valuation (MPOV) Research Group in the School of Mining Engineering, University of Witwatersrand, therefore initiated a project to collate and analyse the current utilization of software in the South African mining industry. This was done through the development of a web-based database of the relevant software. Snowball sampling was used to collect the data because the South African mining industry is diverse and software utilization is fragmented across and within the sectors of the industry. The data was then organized into distinct categories so that the information from a variety of sources could be evaluated on the same basis. A beta version of the database can be accessed online through a user-friendly front-end platform at http://db.mining.wits.ac.za. The database is expected to help at least 13 educational institutions with decisions on facilities and training that are vital to the education of mining and mining-related professionals. Exploration, mining, and consulting companies will also benefit from information in the database relating to availability and useful combinations of software solutions. The database is also strategic to software providers by providing a better understanding of their respective relative market share along the mining value chain. An analysis of the data collated in this research shows that about 77% of the software users are mining companies, 17% are consulting companies, 3% are mineral exploration companies, and the rest are software providers and educational institutions. The software used in the South African mining industry is largely provided by Gemcom Software International, MineRP Solutions, and MRM Mining Services. CAE Mining, who in 2010 acquired the Datamine Group providing Datamine software, is also widely acknowledged as a major software supplier in South Africa, but data from them had not been obtained at the time of producing the beta version of the database due to proprietary constraints. Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. One of the major deliverables of the AMIRA P754 Project, which was sponsored by several major mining companies, was a code of practice and guidelines for metal accounting for the mining and metallurgical industry. These had the objective of improving the auditability and transparency of metal accounting from mine to product, thus assisting in good corporate governance. The overriding objective of mass measurement for metal accounting is to establish the mass of the particular material or component present at a specific time, or the mass flow of that component over a defined time period, to a defined accuracy suitable for metal balancing. As such, it is the first measurement in the chain that includes sampling, sample preparation and analysis, each of which introduces its own errors. Materials often contain moisture, the proportion of which must also be established in order to obtain the dry mass. They may also have to be measured as a volume or mass/mass flow of slurry, or in stockpiles or storage areas, in which case the relative density must be measured. Both the density and moisture measurement often introduce significant error. Whereas a great deal of effort has been directed at sampling, sample preparation and analysis to improve accuracy and establish the error, the same can seldom be said for the mass determination, including the moisture and density measurements. The possible major causes of error are highlighted and methods of reducing them discussed. Mass measurement can be classified into those measurements necessary for custody transfer and primary accounting of the input and output streams to a plant or operation, and measurements required for secondary accounting, or management control. The latter include intra company transfers and plant area performance, and those required for plant control only. This paper is concerned only with primary accounting measurements. The code and best practice state that the equipment should be certified (as sized) as is required for custody transfer. The most accurate and precise of the various possible methods is the static measurement of mass on a weighbridge, platform scale or a weigh bin. If static measurement is not possible, which is often the case for ore fed to a plant, possible alternatives are electromechanical conveyor belt weighers or in-motion weighing of rail trucks. In all cases the material must be adequately sampled to enable a representative moisture content to be determined to calculate the dry mass. Where material is flowing inside conduits, only certain types of the multiplicity of flow meters available may be used and, in the case of slurries, very few flow meters are suitable. As most flow meters measure volume or velocity, the density of the material must also be measured. The basic requirements in order to achieve satisfactory results for the mass, of the component of interest, are listed, as well as common problems and pitfalls encountered in practice. The measurement of the mass of stockpiles and in-plant stocks, often required for metal accounting, is often the largest source of error in metal balances. The reasons for this and methods for reducing and managing the effect are discussed.

"The performance of ground support systems under dynamic loading is typically assessed in a qualitative and subjective manner. As a result, it is difficult to develop an explicit knowledge on the mechanisms of action and interaction of support elements subjected to rockbursts. This paper examines rockbursts that have occurred at Creighton, Copper Cliff, and Coleman mines since 2000, 2004, and 2006, respectively. The mines are located in the Sudbury Basin, in Ontario, Canada. The majority of pertinent information was obtained through on-site field assessments, seismic system records, and numerical elastic stress modelling. Passive monitoring is used to link the evolution of the frequency and severity of rockbursts to the evolution of mining and support practice at the three mine sites. Based on the collected data, ground support elements that enhanced the capacity of support systems to withstand dynamic loads are identified. IntroductionThe selection of appropriate mining methods, extraction sequences, rock mass de-stressing techniques, and ground support systems is of great importance in mitigating the level of rockburst-related risk. In burst-prone conditions, the design of support systems should account for the anticipated dynamic load demand and the capacity of the available support options. Furthermore, an economical design should, implicitly or explicitly, take into consideration the consequences of a rockburst and its impact on worker safety and mine productivity. Stacey (2012) has argued that we have a limited understanding of the mechanisms of rock mass behaviour in seismic conditions. This is compounded by a ‘lack of understanding of the mechanisms of action and interaction of support elements under dynamic loads’ (Stacey, 2012). Consequently, the design of support systems required to manage dynamic loads is usually based on experience. The assessment of the dynamic performance of ground support systems is typically subjected to qualitative (and sometimes subjective) interpretations from ground control personnel."

Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.

The Pooncarie Project is located in the Murray Basin region of Australia. This region is a potential new mineral sands province. Due to the geological environment and the lithology of the deposit, these deposits have some technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to their successful development. Within the Pooncarie Project the Ginkgo deposit will be developed first. The technical challenges it presents include its geographical isolation, the requirement to remove substantial quantities of overburden as well as the processing issues raised by the highly weathered nature of the ilmenite family of minerals. Ore characterization bench scale testwork and bulk sample pilot plant programmes have been carried out and the data obtained used to design flowsheets for both the wet plant and mineral separation plant circuits with the flexibility to enable these plants to handle the variable heavy mineral assemblage. In addition to the solving of the processing challenges, technical issues such as removal of overburden for the minimum unit cost, the use of hyper saline water in the dredge pond and the provision of infrastructure, have had to be addressed. None the less, the orebodies making up the Pooncarie Project have many positive features including low slimes content, good rutile and zircon grades and the ability to recover most of the ilmenite family of minerals into acceptable TiO2pigment feedstocks. The development of the project is set to proceed with the establishment of mining operations on the Ginkgo orebody feeding a mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. The initial shipment of products is expected to occur in early 2005.

The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

The copper industry is cyclical with the price determined by market forces (i.e. the balance between supply and demand for the metal.) The period of each cycle typically varies between 6 to 9 years. These cycles drive decision making for exploration, new project and mine development, mine closures, process improvement, research and development, and technological innovation. The gold industry is fundamentally different from copper in that supply and demand do not, alone, determine metal price and many other factors play a key role, including global and regional financial conditions, political stability, and the global future economic outlook. However, the gold price experiences trends and longer term cycles that similarly drive business decision making. This paper examines developments in the copper industry that have occurred over the past few price cycles (approximately 20 years) and explores how the lessons learned can be applied to gold extraction. A number of specific examples and opportunities are discussed in detail, including; technology development and innovation, cost control and business improvement, material characterization, comminution equipment, biological heap leaching, and concentrate pressure leaching.

As new legislation drives metallurgical plants to lower SO2 emissions, plant managers face the challenge of keeping their costs under control. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System has been broadly adopted in the non-ferrous industry as a cost-effective solution for smelter operators to meet the new SO2 emissions targets. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System is an a mine-based regenerable process that selectively absorbs SO2 from a variety of gases, including dilute smelter gases, such as furnace and converter gases. The system produces a pure, water-saturated SO2 by-product stream, which can then be directed to the front end of a sulphuric acid plant for conversion to sulphuric acid. When deployed in a smelter complex, the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System may also be used to process acid plant tail gas, allowing single absorption sulphuric acid plants to achieve emissions an order of magnitude lower than that of a double absorption acid plant with a lower capital investment. Depending on inlet gas temperature, SO2 emissions in the treated gas can be controlled to as low as 55mg/Nm3. This paper will describe some of the applications where customers have or are planning to use the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System, as well as which features and cost advantages for the treatment of smelter gases were important in the technology choice.

Gy's formula for the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE) is based on a model that assumes independent selections of particles. A generalization of this model, which can theoretically lead to more realistic representation of actual sampling processes, was, for the first time, experimentally verified by repeated sampling from a well-mixed batch consisting of particles of zirconium silicate of two different sizes. The predictions for the sampling variance made in Gy?s theory and in the more general model were compared with the experimentally observed sampling variance. During the experiment performed here, the variance prediction made in the theory of Gy ranges from 0.96 × 10?7(g2/g2) to 0.95 × 10?7(g2/g2), which is approximately a factor 60 lower than the experimentally observed variance (5.76 × 10?6(g2/g2)). The difference between the Gy prediction and the experimentally observed variance cannot be fully explained by the uncertainty in the experimentally obtained variance due to the finite number of degrees of freedom. Therefore, the difference is likely to be a significant effect. This shows that, under the experimental conditions, Gy?s formula for the variance of the FSE probably undervalues the sampling variance, unless an empirical correction factor for grouping and segregation is applied in the theory of Gy. The new theory resulted in a variance prediction of 6.00 × 10?6(g2/g2), which is much closer to the observed variance than the Gy prediction. This indicates that the generalization of Gy?s theory offers an outlook for providing a better variance prediction than the Gy predictor in the case of dependencies between particle selections. Since 2005 Two Rivers Platinum Mine has set out on an initiative to actively monitor and control ground conditions on a daily basis, by making use of borehole cameras and pro-actively amending the support and mining strategies based on day-to-day observations of the hangingwall conditions. Today the borehole camera observations form part of the Rock Engineering Department?s daily function, and the size and frequency of falls of ground and ensuing accident rates have been drastically reduced since implementation of the system. The Two Rivers Platinum fall-of-ground management system aims to support 100% of the possible fallout thickness, based on ongoing data gathering and interpretation, thereby ensuring safety and limiting support cost.

ABSTRACT: A fully dynamic, two dimensional, stability analysis of a highly discontinuous rock slope is demonstrated in this paper. The studied rock slope is the upper terrace of King Herod’s Palace in Masada, situated on the western margins of the seismically active Dead Sea Rift. The dynamic deformation of the slope is calculated using a fully dynamic version of DDA in which time dependent acceleration is used as input. The analytically determined failure modes of critical keyblocks in the jointed rock slope are clearly predicted by DDA at the end of the dynamic calculation. It is found however that for realistic displacement estimates some amount of energy dissipation must be introduced into the otherwise fully elastic, un-damped, DDA formulation. Comparison of predicted damage with actual slope performance over historic time span window of 2000 years allows us to conclude that introduction of 2% kinetic damping should suffice for realistic damage predictions. This conclusion is in agreement with recent results of Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) who compared displacements of a single block on an inclined plane subjected to dynamic loading obtained by DDA and by shaking table experiments. Using dynamic DDA it is shown that introduction of a simple rock bolting pattern completely stabilizes the slope. RÉSUMÉ : On présente dans cet article une analyse bidimensionnelle complète de la stabilité d’une pente rocheuse très fracturée. La pente rocheuse étudiée est la terrasse supérieure du Palais du roi Hérode à Massada, située sur la rive Ouest du Rift sismiquement actif de la Mer Morte. La pente est constituée de blocs de dolomite raide présentant une stratification sub-horizontale et des joints sub-verticaux. La déformation dynamique de la pente est calculée en utilisant une version entièrement dynamique de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA) où l’accélération dépendant du temps est utilisée comme donnée. Les modes de rupture déterminés analytiquement des blocs clés dans la pente rocheuse fracturée sont clairement prévus par l’approche DDA à la fin du calcul dynamique. On trouve cependant, que pour obtenir des estimations réalistes du déplacement, il faut introduire un facteur de dissipation énergétique sans lequel la formulation DDA serait totalement élastique et sans amortissement. En comparant l’endommagement prévu avec les caractéristiques de la pente sur une période historique de 2000 ans, nous pouvons conclure que l’introduction d’un amortissement cinématique de 2% suffit pour obtenir de prévisions réalistes. Cette conclusion est conforme aux résultats récents de Tsesarsky, Hatzor and Sitar (2002) qui ont comparé les déplacements d’un bloc isolé sur un plan incliné sous chargement dynamique obtenus avec l’analyse DDA et à partir d’essais sur table vibrante. Der untersuchte Hang ist die obere Terrasse des Herodespalastes in Massada, welche in den westlichen Randgebieten des seismisch aktiven Toten Meer Grabens liegt.Die dynamische Deformation des Berghangs wird mit Hilfe einer vollstaendig dynamischen DDA-Version berechnet, in welcher als Input die zeitabhaengige Beschleunigung eingegeben wird. Die analytisch bestimmten Versagensarten kritischer Schluesselbloecke in diesem zerkluefteten Steinhang werden durch Anwendung von DDA am Ende der dynamischen Berechnung klar vorausgesagt. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass fuer realistische Dislozierungs-Abschaetzungen ein gewisses Mass an Energieverlust in der sonst vollstaendig elastischen, ungedaempften DDA-Fassung einbezogen werden muss. Der Vergleich des vorhergesagten Schadens mit dem aktuellen Verhalten des Berghangs waehrend einer historischen Zeitspanne von 2000 Jahren erlaubt uns zu schliessen, dass ein Zusatz von 2% kinetischer Daempfung fuer eine realistische Vorhersage des Schadens ausreichen sollte. Diese Schlussfolgerung steht im Einvernehmen mit neuen Ergebnissen von Tsesarsky, Hatzor und Sitar (2002), welche die Dislozierung eines einzelnen Blocks auf geneigter Ebene unter dynamischer Belastung – unter Anwendung von DDA und “shaking table”-Versuchen – verglichen. Mit Hilfe der dynamischen DDA wird gezeigt, dass der Steinhang durch Anwendung einer einfachen Steinschraubenstruktur vollkommen stabilisiert werden kann.

This paper covers in situ stresses in the Earth?s crust prior to any man-made disturbances, such as mining. It introduces the Southern African Stress Database, which contains primitive stress measurements obtained from locations spread all over southern Africa. The measured stress data shows large variability without any visible trends, except a relationship with increasing depth. The stress database is reviewed briefly, establishing means to measure the variability or dispersion in the measurements, and showing that the dispersion is not as much a result of experimental error as it is a feature of primitive stress. The paper demonstrates from the beginning that the state of stress in rock is highly variable, but that there are well-defined maximum and minimum limits to all the stress components in rock. Formal error analysis is introduced to check the consistency of the database and to separate out a database of consistent stress measurements for use in a primitive stress model. The aim is to provide a picture of primitive crustal stress based on objective stress measurements together with interpretations of how the primitive stress can be affected by the five main influences; namely, depth, rock mass properties, tectonism, isostacy, and erosion. Four elementary models for primitive stress are introduced and compared with the measured data. It is quite clear that none of the elementary models is sufficient to describe the data. In the absence of a better model, this paper suggests a generic model based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion and the consistent stress database, since it incorporates the variability in the stress tensor that is likely to be encountered underground all over southern Africa.
