The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The 'possible operating range' of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation's Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Mr Roman replied that, while normal administrative costs were accounted for, the additional costs incurred in appointing and laying off staff were not taken into account."

Some years ago, Ferroatlantica developed a new type of electrode known as the ELSA electrode. In this electrode there is a central graphite core that provides support, surrounded by an annulus of Søderberg paste that gets baked during operation. This technology has been implemented on several silicon furnaces around the world, and was reported on during the previous Infacon conference. In all electrodes, but particularly in the ELSA electrode, the quality and consistency of the paste are important for correct operation. As the type of paste varies between customers and between countries, Ferroatlantica has developed a quality control procedure for their customers of this technology. This procedure is geared to the point of view of the customer rather than the paste producer. The analysis is based on the desired flow pattern of the raw paste and on the desired mechanical and electrical properties of the baked paste, as experience has shown that these are the most important parameters to monitor in order to avoid having problems with the resulting electrodes. This paper discusses these methods of paste analysis in the light of complementary studies that have been done when there has been an electrode breakage in the different plants.

Spiral concentrators are widely applied to beneficiate commodities such as Cr2O3, mineral sands, and ferrochrome. The application of spirals for heavy minerals has been limited to a feed top size of 1 mm. At particle sizes larger than this, friction retards heavy particles and the particles' primary velocity approaches zero, resulting in a solids build-up, therefore inhibiting further separation. Recently, a new Multotec SC25 spiral model was introduced to the industry, which aids in beneficiating particles of up to 3 mm, with successes having been demonstrated in ferrochrome slag and titanium-bearing minerals. This spiral also has potential in electronic waste applications. This paper examines the applicability of the SC25 spiral in coarse Cr2O3 recovery. This stems from the fact that junior chrome miners tend to discard particles larger than 1 mm as they neither have milling nor dense media circuits. Also, alluvial chrome miners discard +1 mm even though this size fraction contains recoverable and liberated Cr2O3. The SC25 spiral has shown better Cr2O3 separation efficiencies than the SC21 model and with higher SiO2 rejection at saleable grades, thus providing an additional revenue stream specifically for the coarser (+820 μm) size fractions. The present study focuses on utilising the electrocoagulation (EC) process for the treatment of process water generated in an iron ore beneficiation plant for safe discharge and reuse. Removal of heavy metals like Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Pb which was found in higher concentration along with some other impurities exceeding the permissible and discharge limit were attempted. The influence of different electrode material, current density, inter-electrode distance, and solution conductivity was explored for effective removal of the metal ions. Experimental results infer that almost 99.95% Fe, 97.77% Cr, 73.44% Cu, 99.34% Pb and 88.69% Mn was removed using aluminum electrodes at monopolar mode at a current density of 68.50 A/m2, inter-electrode distance of 1 cm and solution conductivity of 1.033mS after 60 min of EC. In addition, removal of other toxins like TDS, turbidity, salinity and conductivity etc. was also assessed during the process. Removal of such heavy metal ions by EC was found to follow 1st order kinetics with electric energy consumption of 3.93 kWh/m3, electrode consumption of 0.1191 kg/m3 and operating cost of 0.6115 US$/m3 respectively. The aim of this investigation is the evaluation of optimising the Shahroud copper ore beneficiation plant near the Iranian city of Shahroud, by means of a sensor-based ore sorter applying X-ray transmission technology. Currently, this plant’s feed capacity of 52t/h produces 0.5t/h copper concentrate with a grade of 30% and copper recovery of 85% from a feed grade of 0.36%. By applying an X-ray transmission-based (XRT) sorter, it is possible to preconcentrate the feed and remove the gangue materials before entering the plant, enabling the production rate of concentrate to be increased. In this study, the obtained representative sample from the plant was preconcentrated in particle size of - 75+10mm by using the X-ray sorter, thus the concentrate with Cu grade of 0.85% was obtained. Therefore, by using of X-ray sorter the Cu grade of plant feed was increased to 0.48%. By increasing the feed grade from 0.36% to 0.48%, and considering a Cu recovery of 85%, the production rate will be increased from 0.48t/h to 0.61t/h. Confined bed comminution in High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) and Vertical Roller Mills (VRM) is gaining substantial attention in many applications. Previously used mainly for milling coal or construction materials, HPGR and VRM have started to complement or even replace tumbling mills in ore beneficiation. Materials like coal or clinker are relatively homogenous, however, in comparison to metal ores and wall rocks. This characteristic poses a new challenge to the confined bed comminution but also an opportunity. Fuerstenau and Abouzeid have investigated the selectivity in comminution of a mixture of particles of different strength in a particle bed. The median particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) of the two constituents used were kept constant. Only the proportion of the two constituents was modified. The competence of a material is, however, also a function of particle size. Smaller particles tend to be more competent than larger ones of the same material. If selective comminution is applied on ores, this size influence has to be understood. The paper presents research results on this topic based on experimental investigations with model materials as well as with natural particles, which were stressed in a piston-die press. It appeared that the comminution result depends substantially on the material characteristics and the composition of the mixture. Conclusions will be drawn for the application in future applications of selective comminution in mineral processing. Keywords: Confined bed comminution, HPGR, VRM, piston die press, particle size

The concentration of cassiterite at Iscor's Uis Mine is described, and information is given on aspects of the concentration of iron ore at Thabazimbi and Sishen Mines. At Uis, a very Iow-grade tin ore is concentrated by three-stage jigging, spiral concentration, and tabling to give a high-grade concentrate with a recovery of 80 per cent of the tin. A Iow-grade tantalite-columbite concentrate is also produced. The possibility of recovering mica, the use of sluice boxes instead of spirals, and the recovery of cassiterite from minus 45 µm material are being investigated. At the two iron-ore mines, heavy-medium separation is applied to size fractions larger than 0,5 mm. The types of ferrosilicon and the circuits used for the recovery of ferrosilicon from the various dilute-medium circuits are described. The spiral-concentration plant being installed at Thabazimbi for the treatment of the minus 0,5 mm portion of the ore is described.

Few thinking people will dispute the fact that a constant improvement in the wages of Black personnel is essential, but this cannot be done merely by a redistribution of income in South Africa.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.
