Recent Federal coal-mine inspections have revealed some good and some definitely hazardous practices and systems for transporting; handling, and storing lubricants in and about coal mines. Improper storage or handling of. lubricants in coal mines has caused disastrous mine fires or, by supporting combustion, has made fires from other sources more difficult to fight. Careless handling of grease and oil around electrical equipment wastes much oil and permits entrance of grit and foreign substances into the working parts, which causes excessive wear and increases the possibility, of electrical ignition.

In recognition of the need for a portable low-profile hard rock crusher, the Bureau of Mines sponsored the development of such a unit capable of moving up as the face advances. By allowing primary ore reduction at or near the mine face, the advantages of conveyor haulage From the face as demonstrated in soft ore and coal mines, could be realized for hard rock Brines as well. This report presents the results of a development and testing program for such a portable low-profile crusher, designed by Eagle Crusher Company and called the M44. The unit has an extremely low vertical profile considering its size and capacity. The crushing jaws, which form the crushing lumber, are inclined, with the lower jaw mounted for eccentric movement relative to the stationary upper jaw. This provides efficient crushing while also forcing material through the crushing chamber. As a result, the inlet feeder can be disposed horizontally. To facilitate correct processing of different materials, the size of the discharge opening and the action of the movable crushing jaw are variable. The unit also incorporates a feeder hopper and discharge conveyor that provides for efficient ore handling through the machine. Tests demonstrated the M44 Crusher's high capacity, efficiency and reliability. During testing, it crushed over 120,000 tons of materials of up to 32,000 psi compressive strength at production rates in the 200-350 tons/hour range. The unit operated smoothly under simulated low-headroom conditions, and Proved readily transportable.

Bureau of Mines research was conducted to develop effective separation methods that might be used in exploiting substantial tonnages of complex barite-fluorspar ores in Arizona. The exploitable reserves now may be increased as recent batch and continuous flotation tests demonstrated that a complex barite?-fluorspar ore from the Red Chief deposit, Yuma County, Ariz., could be selectively treated to concurrently produce (1) fluorspar and (2) a barite byproduct of marketable grade. The sample contained 24.8 percent CaF2 and 24.3 percent BaS04. Processing comprised production of a fluorspar product containing 97 percent CaF2 with an 82 percent recovery, using a sodium fluoride-lignin sulfonate-fatty acid reagent combination. Concurrent retreatment of the fluorspar tailing, using sodium cetyl sulfate as a collector, yielded a barite product of 94 percent BaS04 grade with a 71-percent recovery. The products met specifications for acid-grade fluorspar and drilling mud-type barite.

[THE Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910 to conduct research and to Establish standards for mining equipment and practices which would conserve human life, natural resources, and property in the mineral industries. Several lists of equipment approved by the Bureau as permissible for use in gassy coal mines have a been issued since then. The lists covering all approved equipment except breathing apparatus and explosive have been consolidated info two publications: Bulletin 543, Permissible Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, and Information Circular 5220, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved By The Bureau of Mines During 1953-62. The purpose of this publication is to supplement Bulletin 543 kind Information Circular 8220 with a listing of permissible equipment approved during 1963 and 1964. This report describes the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS) developed by the Bureau of Mines to analyze the records of industrial hygiene samples collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in metal and nonmetal mines. MIDAS is the first system capable of sorting, editing, analyzing, and reporting these data. It is also the first system designed to be used by a number of Government agencies. At present the system contains 225,000 personal and area samples for 61 contaminants in 45 industries. The records date from 1974 to early 1980, and MSHA plans to provide yearly updates to the system. This report presents preliminary analyses of dust exposures and discusses the potential uses and limitations of these data. Analysis of the dust data for 1978 and 1979 showed that bagging had the highest percentage of dust overexposure. Morn than 40 pct of the 1,536 respirable quartz dust, total nuisance dust, and total silica dust samples exceeded the MSHA exposure limit. Other dusty occupations are ranked according to their percentage of overexposure.

Iron and steel scrap has accounted for 45 to 50 percent of the metallics used by the steel industry. In an electric furnace which utilizes a 100-percent cold charge consisting of about 99 percent scrap and 1 percent pig iron, sensible heat from molten pig iron is not present as it is when hot metal is charged to open hearths and converters. A study of means for more efficient utilization of iron and steel scrap in steelmaking indicated that the time and fuel requirements to melt scrap were important cost factors, particularly in arc-furnace steelmaking. A process to preheat scrap economically prior to charging into the arc furnace has been developed, utilizing efficiently the heat from combustion of fossil fuels as a substitute for electric-arc heating in the initial stage of arc-furnace steelmaking. Scrap is loaded into a portable vertical cylindrical furnace body that is open at the top and has a perforated dropout door at the bottom. In the heating operation, the furnace body containing scrap is placed upon a hollow base connected to a flue, and then the burner and combustion-chamber unit is lowered on top of the furnace body. The stream of hot-combustion products flows down through the bed of scrap imparting heat to it, and the cooled gases exhaust through the flue. After the heating operation the furnace body containing hot scrap is transported to the arc furnace for charging. Thus, the furnace body serves as a charging bucket for top-charged arc furnaces, enabling this preheating process to be integrated into existing material-handling patterns in many arc-furnace plants.

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining community about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

U.S. Bureau of Mines research has found that maintenance of surface mining equipment is involved in slightly more than one-third (34.1 pct) of all surface mining accidents. Two groups of machines, haulage trucks and power shovels, accounted for over one-half of all surface mining mobile equipment maintenance accidents in 1978-84. Maintenance work-time histories for these machines were compared with accident records to identify the most hazardous-to-maintain systems within the machines. Recommendations to reduce the accident risk associated with maintenance of these hazardous systems are presented.

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to give greater impetus to the building of programs safeguarding the employees of the mineral industries from disabling work injuries. The results of the 1960 National Safety Competition are presented in this publication. Mines and quarries that were awarded the Sentinels of Safety trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group and those mineral operations that ranked second, third, fourth, and fifth in the competition are listed with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling work injuries. In addition, this publication presents statistical data on disabling work-injury experience in all other mines and quarries participating in the annual competitions.

[The formation of gas hydrates in natural-gas pipe lines depends on temperature and pressure conditions in the lines as well as on the presence of condensed water. The operating pressure in a pipe line may be determined easily and usually is available from the records of operation, but the temperature seldom is known. In cooperation with the American Gas Association, the Bureau of Mines, in its investigation of gas hydrates, conducted a pipe-line-temperature survey and studied underground temperatures at depths at which pipe lines ordinarily are buried and the relationship of these temperatures to prevailing atmospheric conditions. A similar but more limited study of this type was, conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines a number of years ago.4/A summary of the earlier findings was included in a general report by the Bureau on the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines.5/ In the present study, data on temperature variations were obtained at several places widely separated geographically. This information should assist pipe-line engineers in designing and operating natural-gas pipe lines. In the pipe-line-temperature survey here resorted, a study was made along a 22-inch natural-gas pipe line: originating near Amarillo, Tex., and extending northwestward through New Mexico into Colorado (fig. 1). The objective of this study is "to assess the impact of surface mining on soil compaction in the Midwest". The study revolves around a unique field sampling program targeted at four mine sites utilizing four distinct types of soil movement of midwestern prime land. Through the preparation of a final report for use as a guidebook, an assessment is made of the degree to which surface mining operations contribute to the soil compaction problem. The final report is formulated through the use of field study data as well as information gathered in an intense literature review. The final report centers on applying collected data to practical field applications. Soil sampling on the four mine sites centers on a comparison of natural and replaced soils for moist bulk density. This characterization evaluates changes in density and texture throughout the soil profile to a depth of 48 inches. Fertility of the topsoil is also assessed for natural and replaced soils. During field sampling and observations, a base of information has been gathered to compile a case study on each mine site. The report accesses the regulations in the prime farmland areas through the use of a matrix. The regulatory matrix allows easy access of mining personnel to State and Federal regulations.

Shafts into coalbeds usually produce the most methane, so the information in this chapter applies primarily to shafts at coal mines. Nevertheless, much of the information is relevant for noncoal mines that have methane in the mine or in the overlying strata. METHANE IN SHAFTS EXCAVATED BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS (DRILL, BLAST, MUCK) [ ] Ventilation. Shafts excavated by conventional means are ventilated with a fan on the surface connected to ductwork that extends down into the shaft (Figure 9–1). Oxyfuel combustion is currently one of the principal technological options being considered for capturing carbon dioxide from pulverised coal power plants. In oxyfuel combustion, coal is burnt in a mixture of recycled flue gases and added oxygen instead of in air. In principle this yields a flue gas containing only carbon dioxide, water vapour and small amounts other impurities. Oxyfuel combustion is superficially similar to combustion in air, but there are inevitable differences. This paper describes ignition tests on pulverised coal suspensions using a suite of coals of different rank and from different countries of origin and over a range of oxygen and coal concentrations of interest for oxyfuel combustion. The ignition tests were carried out using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 20-litre explosion chamber. The purpose was to determine how easily the various coals ignite and burn in mixtures of O2 and CO2 compared to their combustion in air. The residual char volatile and ash contents for the ignition residues were measured using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), allowing Q factors (i.e., enhancement in apparent volatile yield due to higher heating rates and/or heterogeneous reactions) to be determined and compared. An ignition index has been derived from the explosion and char data. This index has been used to rank low volatile coals for ignition propensity in air. The results show that to obtain ignition and combustion comparable to that in air, the oxyfuel O2-CO2 gas mixture must contain over 30% O2. Keywords: CO2 capture, combustion, pyrolysis, oxyfuel.

Corundum, natural alumina, or aluminum oxide (A1203) is the hardest mineral known except diamond. Theoretical composition is Al 52.9 percent and 0 17.1 percent, but it always contains small quantities of impurities, chiefly silica, iron, and lime. The melting point of corundum is above 1950° C., and it is insoluble in the strongest acids. Its hardness (9 on the Mohs scale) varies slightly according to purity, and its specific Gravity ranges from 3.95 to 4.10, 4 being a fair average. The index of refraction is 1.760 to 1.768 and its streak is white. Luster is adamantine to Vitreous, come specimens pearly, and color varies widely from white, gray, pink, and blue to black, brown, or bronze. Gem varieties are transparent or translucent, and of more brilliant coloring - red, blue, yellow, purple, or green. Corundum occurs in opaque massive or block structure with parting planes little developed or only roughly delineated and in granular form as minute crystals or small, irregular grains interspersed throughout the contact zones of schists and gneisses.

This report describes exploration, development, and exploitation methods, and summarizes costs at the Stormy Day mine, which was discovered in 1941. Several shipments of tungsten ore were made in 1944 to the Metals Reserve Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. The purchase of tungsten by the Federal Government, which began in 1951, stimulated interest in tungsten, and a successful program of exploration with participation of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration (DMEA) indicated enough ore to warrant development of the property. Development work comprised drifting, crosscutting, and raising. Shrinkage stoping was used for mining the ore. Operations were suspended in October 1956, when the Federal Government terminated its purchase program. Total production of the mine was approximately 20,000 tons of tungsten ore. INTRODUCTION This information circular is one of a series, prepared in cooperation with various mining companies and published by the Bureau of Mines, relating to methods and costs of equipping and developing mining properties in the United States.

This report contains the practical application of a computer program for the simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires and other emergencies on five hardrock mines. The introduction describes the need for such a program, its basic features, and the range of its applicability which is mainly a function of the available ventilation data. The second chapter discusses program modifications, whose necessity or desirability was, during the application, discovered. The following five chapters, which comprise the major portion of the report, give the detailed description of the program application on the five mines. For every one of the selected mines, the ventilation system, the source of the used ventilation data and their preparation for computer simulations are outlined. Based on data for the airflow distribution solely, fumes concentrations in the mines are calculated for several assumed fire locations. Based on data for airflow and pressure distributions, ventilation disturbances caused by fires as well as the resulting fumes concentrations and temperatures are determined. The consequences for escape routes and the possible means to keep them free of fumes are discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the program, other contaminant sources and other potentially dangerous ventilation factors, like fan failures and changed surface temperatures, are simulated also. The results of the calculations have been entered into ventilation plans which makes them easier to scrutinize. All significant computer printouts have been attached.

Severe whipping of shuttle car trailing cables occurs when the car stops suddenly or reverses direction. This causes cable damage, and can seriously injure personnel near the cable. FMC has contracted with the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design, build and demonstrate a reel control system that will significantly reduce or eliminate whipping. II. CONCLUSIONS Results of engineering effort show that the following conditions are primarily responsible for the whipping problem. Causes may exist individually, or in combination.

A data-acquisition system was designed by the Bureau of Mines to monitor five detectors with radon continuously flowing through each. These detectors could be monitored up to 12 times an hour, but were only monitored according to a preset time, thus allowing radon to be monitored continuously in a uranium mine. The counter can be set to monitor each detector for any period of time up to 16.5 minutes. This allows very low concentrations to be monitored longer to reduce statistical error. There would be no upper limit in radon concentration that could be monitored, but there would be a lower limit of 50 picocuries per liter (pCi/l). Each detector was cylibrated in the laboratory by the Lucas flask method. Multiple samples were taken at two different concentrations, and the correction factor for each detector was determined by a least squares fit of the data. To verify the calibrations, a series of measurements at several concentrations were made against a constant source. Our agreement at low radon concentrations (300 pCi/i) with the two-filter method as within 3 percent; thus, the total error would be this difference plus the two-filter error. At high concentrations the coefficient of variation ranged between 2.1 and 9.8 percent for the five different detector units.
