East Diamante is a submarine volcano in the southern Mariana arc that is a complex caldera about 10 km x 5 km (elongated ENE-WSW), and breached on its northern and southwestern sectors. A large field of barite-sulfide mounds was discovered in June 2009 and revisited in July 2010 aboard the R.V. Natsushima using the Hyper-dolphin ROV. The mound field occurs on the NE flank of a cluster of resurgent domes inside the caldera. The mound field extends for more than 100 m long and is about 30 m wide, and is aligned along a NE-SW rift valley. A sample of dacite yielded a 40Ar/39Ar age of 20,000±400 years. Individual mounds are typically 1-3 m tall and 0.5-2 m wide, with lengths from about 3 to more than 5 m. The mounds are composed of barite-dominant layers interbedded with Zn-sulfide-rich barite layers. Rare inactive spires and chimneys cap some mounds. Fe and Mn oxides are currently forming small (<1 m diameter, ~0.5 m tall) subsidiary mounds on the top of some of the sulfate/sulfide mounds and drape the flanks of others. Both diffuse- and focused-flow fluids emanate from the subsidiary oxide mounds. Ages of the basal sulfate/sulfide mounds cluster around 4,000 years old based on 226Ba/Ba, whereas the oxides are less than 5 years old based on 228Th/228Ra. Most mound and chimney samples are dominated by barite and amorphous silica; sulfides occur in variable amounts that in decreasing order of abundance include sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Anglesite, cerrusite, and a Pb phosphate occur as late-stage interstitial phases. Some mound samples have fragmental textures; layered clasts composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite may have been derived from collapsed chimneys. Despite the abundance of barite, samples contain high concentrations of Zn (to 23 Wt.%), Pb (to 13 wt.%), Ag (to 500 ppm), and Au (to 15 ppm). Copper is enriched in a few mounds samples, up to 3 wt.%, but is typically <1 wt.%. Other significant metal enrichments include Sb (to 1320 ppm), Cd (to 1180 ppm), and Hg (to 55 ppm).

A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. The Central Indian Ridge (CIR), the boundary between the African and Indian plates, forms a SSE trending mid-oceanic accretionary system in the equatorial Indian Ocean (Fig. 1), extending to the northerly Carlsberg Ridge spreading center, and terminating at the Rodrigues Triple Junction (RTJ; 25°30&apos;S, 70°06&apos;E) by intersection with the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR). Crustal divergence of the CIR proceeds at intermediate rates; a progressive increase of ocean floor accretion towards the south is documented: the present half spreading rate and ridge trend change from 1.80 cm/a and N142° at the equator to 2.73 cm/a and N152° north of the triple point. The topography of the central rift zone is rather smooth compared to slow spreading analogues such as the SWIR, but slightly more rugged than the SEIR. The rift valley is 500-800 m deep, 10-15 km wide and usually well defined. The inner floor, 2-4 km in width, is relatively flat along the axis and more variable in cross section, and lies at 2700-3200 m depth. Off set fracture zones striking generally N60° . in southern portions of the CIR and laterally displacing median valleys by as much as 8 km are often bent, uplifting crustal sequences up to several hundred meters. The length of individual spreading segments varies between a few and several tens of kilometers. The vertical displacement on normal faults are larger while lineaments are shorter than those of the faster spreading SEIR. The United States is dependent on foreign imports for about 80 percent of its ilmenite, about 60 percent of its rutile, and virtually all of its monazite. Nearshore marine sand deposits and beach-complex sediments in the southeastern United States are important domestic sources of ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, and a number of other less well known economic heavy-mineral (HM) species. Because global onshore reserves of placer titanium minerals may fall short of demand in as few as 20 years, offshore research in HM placers will become more important. The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) defined by the shoreline and the 200-m isobath varies in width for the modern U.S. coastline from a fraction of a kilometer to about 150 km offshore of Cape Cod, Mass., and includes an area of about 3.91 x 105 km2. It probably contains 3-7 x 1011 m3 of sand and gravel which may locally contain commercially exploitable placer HM deposits.

The western continental margin comprises of the southwest coast (Cape Comorin-Mangalore), centralwest coast or Konkan coast (Mangalore-Bombay), northwest coast (Bombay-Gulf of Kutch) and the Laccadives area. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the west coast. The richest offshore placer deposits occur along the 25 km stretch of the southwest coast from Neendakara to Kayamkulam. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the Konkan coast consist largely of silty sand, sandy silt and clay and the concentration of ilmenite is higher than the onshore. The heavy mineral concentration ranges up to 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. The heavy mineral sands extend below the clays to water depth down to 20 m. The heavy minerals sands vary in thickness from 2-10 m. Offshore placers can be mined by using wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line dredges may employ drag buckets or clamshell and hydraulic dredges suction or airlift principles. The dredges can be located on flat bottom or catamaran barges. Dredging of very near shore placers may be achieved by operating from land. The bucket ladder type of dredger has greater digging ability and hence can be deployed for mining placers which are partly consolidated or cemented or where the most valuable part of the deposit lies at the contact between the alluvium and the bedrock. This type operates very economically up to 45 m depth and needs minimum power requirement per unit dredged. Suction type hydraulic dredges can be operated very effectively up to 60 m water depths. This system is quite ideal for the inner shelf. The maximum practical economic working water depths for wire-line dredges are about 150 m. With the drag bucket modified into large net buckets, the method can be utilized to greater depths. They can be used in areas of high water currents and swells. The type of bucket can be changed readily with change in the nature of alluvium or substratum. The hydraulic suction dredge is the most suitable system for mining unconsolidated sediments. When the sediments are semi-unconsolidated, a cutter head can be mounted on the lower end of the suction pipe to agitate the seabed.

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. As the gas hydrates are to be evaluated as a new future energy resource globally, Korean government has initiated national R/D program covering fundamental exploration survey for resources assessment in Korean deep waters and production technology development. Since the Industrial Revolution, the land resources have been decreased rapidly as the industrialization. And this phenomenon brings to our mind an interest in deep-sea resource(manganese nodule). Hence, Korea has been participated in the development project of exploiting manganese nodule since 1983. Hwang and cho(1998) studied the economic efficiency evaluation of manganese nodule carrier. But they used the TAMU(Texas A&M University) model, and assumed deadweight and velocity of bulk-carrier. If we use some optimization technique, more economic manganese nodule carrier can be selected and evaluated without limited assumption. In this study, we evaluated the economic efficiency of manganese nodule carrier using genetic algorithms(GAs).

In response to anthropogenic climate change, the way in which we use and generate energy is changing. To facilitate these developments, it is essential that we increase and diversify the supply of ‘E-Tech’ elements essential for cleaner energy generation and more efficient usage. The vast majority of these materials (e.g. cobalt, lithium, niobium, platinum group metals, rare earth elements and indium) come almost exclusively from mining and new resources must be found and developed in order to secure supply and meet the demands of the future. Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts are rich in cobalt, tellurium and rare earth metals, and are common on seafloor hard grounds at water depths over 1000 m. The mining of both FeMn crusts and nodules is potentially viable dependent of the balance of cobalt and nickle prices (Martino & Parson, 2012), however, crusts need to be at least 4 cm thick with cobalt contents of at least 0.8% (International Seabed Authority, 2008). The difficulty for those wishing to exploit these resources is firstly finding them, and secondly assessing their potential remotely. Such capability would not only save time and money, but also allow mining operations to be more focused, reducing needless destruction of seafloor habitats from exploratory mining or mining of noneconomically worthwhile deposits. In this contribution, we examine the distribution of crusts on a single Atlantic Gyot (Tropic Seamount), the morphology of FeMn crusts, their variable growth patterns and the characteristic geophysical response from crusts in various datasets, including ship based 60 m resolution multibeam and high resolution bathymetry, backscatter and sub-bottom profiler data acquired using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).

INTRODUCTION Germany has a long history in marine research in the Indian Ocean. The first German scientific cruise started in 1964, followed by a series of state-sponsored research cruises between 1983 and 1995 leading to the first finding of polymetallic sulfides in the Indian Ocean. The research included regional bathymetric, geological, structural, volcanological, petrological and hydrothermal investigations along the Carlsberg Ridge and the Central Indian Ridge (CIR). Early environmental base line studies covered oceanographic and sedimentology aspects. In 2010, BGR took the initiative for the preparation of a license application for the exploration of polymetallic sulfides with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), and prospecting started in 2011 along the southern Central (CIR) and the northern Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR) in the southwestern Indian Ocean (cruises INDEX 2011 on board R/V Sonne), INDEX 2012 (R/V Fugro Gauss), INDEX 2013/1-2 (R/V Sonne) and INDEX 2014 (R/V Pelagia). After three years of resource-oriented and environmental base line studies, BGR, in order for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), applied for an exploration license which was approved by and subsequently signed with the ISA in 2015. The license gave permission to start a detailed exclusive resource-oriented exploration program in the license area. The program includes the outline of potential ore deposits and a resource assessment but also extensive and detailed base line studies for the sustainable protection of the marine environment in the license area. The license contract has a fifteen years lifetime and may allow the application for a subsequent mining license. The exploration aims at the identification of inactive polymetallic sulfide deposits, formed below former discharge zones of hot hydrothermal fluids on the ocean floor (“black smoker” systems), by advanced and modern exploration techniques.

Submarine hydrothermal vents and associated mineralization on the Tonga arc have been identified in the summit calderas of two shallow-water volcanoes. The highest temperature vents (up to 270°C) occur at water depths between 430 and 540 meters below sea level (mbsl) near the summit of one volcano at 24°S (volcano 19). Clusters of large barite, anhydrite, and sulfide chimneys on the summit cone are vigorously discharging clear hydrothermal fluids with temperatures on the seawater boiling curve. There is abundant evidence of phase separation and associated gold and base metal precipitates. Pyrite, marcasite, wurtzite-sphalerite, tennantite, and chalcopyrite line the interiors of the highest temperature vents. Acid-sulfate alteration of basalts and basaltic andesites is evidenced by intense silicification and the presence of abundant alunite. One volcano at 21°S (volcano 1) has a chain of explosion craters on the flank of a neovolcanic scoria cone and associated massive pyrite, barite and native sulfur deposits at a water depth of 210 mbsl. Intergrowths of pyrite and enargite are associated with intensely argillic altered basaltic andesites. The reported alteration and Au-enriched mineralization styles of these vent fields are similar to other shallow water hydrothermal systems at island arc volcanoes and contribute to the diversity of seafloor hydrothermal activity in the western Pacific region.

One of the obstacles during the initial phases of project development is the assessment of the environmental impact. Mining residue, consisting of fine seafloor sediments, are to be discharged subsea to mitigate the impact of these suspended particles. In order to test the effectiveness of discharging in proximity of the seabed, a numerical model is developed within the open source software package OpenFoam. Dedicated laboratory experiments for numerical model validation are discussed within this paper. INTRODUCTION Siltation is considered one of the major pressures on the environment for a seabed mining operation. Siltation is defined as the pollution of water by a high concentration of suspended sediments like clay or silt. This can be caused by two main activities during the mining process: the spill loss during the excavation and the return flow of undesired seafloor sediment after ore filtration on the ship. In a concentrated cloud, these fine particles form a so-called turbidity plume. Prediction of the size of these plumes and the created layer thickness of deposited sediment is a crucial part of the environmental impact assessment. The challenge in predicting the behaviour of these plumes is found in the wide range of scales involved in the process. At the point of origin, the turbidity plumes spread mainly under the influence of turbulent whirls created by an initial momentum and a buoyancy difference due to the presence of the suspended sediment particles. If carried by ambientcurrents, these plumes can spread for several kilometres before blending in the background.

In a context of scarce mineral resources, coupled with an increasing global demand in metals due to the exponential growth of newly industrialized countries, the mining industry will inevitably have to deal with tomorrow?s resources: underwater deposits. Three types of offshore deposits are known to date: polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts and hydrothermal sulphides. The latter, regarding the political-economic context, is now considered most likely to be exploited in a near future. Operating a mine critically requires accurate knowledge on geotechnical properties of the ore. A question is thus to be asked: Is there a particular spatial organization of geotechnical properties in a hydrothermal sulfide mound? In the present study, geotechnical properties have been measured for 29 sulfide samples of known origin, completed by 14 measurements on Western Pacific specimens from Yamazaki et al. (1990) and Yamazaki and Park (2003). From these geotechnical data on 43 sulfide samples, we can provide some answers to this question above, crucial for future exploitation of underwater mines.

INTRODUCTION In October 2014, on behalf of the French government, Ifremer, along with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), signed a contract to start a detailed exploration program for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in the work plan located on the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR). The contract has a fifteen-year lifetime and the related exploration program must include the outline of SMS deposits and a resource assessment, as well as detailed environmental base line studies in the contract area. The exploration for SMS deposits generally includes detection of hydrothermal plume anomalies, acquisition of surface and near-bottom geophysical data, sampling operations from the research vessel (e.g. dredges, cores), and dive operations. The environmental studies include, among others, short and long-term oceanographic measurements, water column studies, biodiversity evaluation close and far from SMS deposits, characterization of natural hydrothermal plumes and related sedimentation. The HERMINE research cruise held from March 13th to April 28th 2018 (R/V Pourquoi Pas?) was the first cruise dedicated to exploration of active and inactive SMS and to the quantification of natural chemical input to the water column. The HERMINE cruise strategy was built up around three main objectives: (i) regional exploration including the detection of plume anomalies and the research of SMS deposits, (ii) local exploration of a SMS district and (iii) integrated study of a natural hydrothermal plume. This 3-in-1 cruise required us to optimize the switch between dives and surface operations. Day-time was devoted to dive operations whereas night-time was mostly dedicated to CTD/Rosette operations. The Nautile HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) was well suited to the working time schedule of the cruise because it was time efficient in shorter (i.e. < 10h) dives due to fast descent and ascent speed, fast submerged forward speed, high maneuverability and the ability to carry heavy science payload as well as large volume of samples. Regional Exploration The first seventeen days of the HERMINE cruise were devoted to regional exploration, i.e. the detection of new plume anomalies and the research of new sulfide mineralization in the French work plan (10 000 km2; 6 clusters).
