Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. Any value addition to the mineral sands in the Murray Basin (Australia) will generate waste that needs to be disposed of safely. For example, conversion of ilmenite and synthetic rutile to titania (TiO2) pigment would generate large amounts of environmentally undesirable elements. Processing of U+Th containing zircon sands to zirconia or to higher purity zircon would generate a low-level radioactive waste. In this study it is proposed that one way to circumvent the waste problem could be to contain such waste in magnesium-based (Sorel) cements. Containment of waste in magnesium cements is an attractive idea especially for the mineral sand processing companies that could operate in the Murray Basin in the future, because the required magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride may be made cheaply from the saline waters encountered during mining operations. The magnesium cement production process is also far less energy intensive than the Portland cement production process. The results of this study indicate that mixing a waste stream with a slurry of magnesium cement before being discharged to the disposal area would contain the waste in a æconcrete-likeÆ structure, resistant to dispersion by wind and moderate rain. However, some loss of strength and increased leaching of impurities, Mg and Cl could take place in wet climate areas. Ongoing research is being concentrated to develop a new process for making water-resistant magnesium cement.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). The current index tests are also not appropriate for assessment of coalmine immediate roof and floor rocks.CITATION:Beamish, B B and Theiler, J, 2017. Coal mining in New Zealand is principally a State-owned and controlled operation where the State produces 70 per cent of the coal in New Zealand and 65 per cent of coal mined in the Waikato. The State's flexibility in production quality and price makes them tough competition. Coal in the Waikato varies in quality considerably throughout the region making the high quality coal deposits as in the Huntly district a highly sought after commodity. The high quality of coal is often offset against transport costs as, for example, Maramarua coals can compete effectively in the Auckland market and dollar per calorific value basis.

To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. Much of the coal and gold mining industry of New Zealand is small scale. Funding is tight and mechanisation limited. The country has many well documented small coalfields (some with significant outcropping) and alluvial gold deposits. These are generally remote, difficult to access (physically and otherwise) and of submarginal value (largely a consequence of size when viewed for extraction by traditional techniques). The industry is also burdened by environmental and bureaucratic constraints. The above over simplified setting suggests to the Author, a newcomer to New Zealand, the opportunity to consider some novel concepts based on technology and techniques developed overseas or borrowed from other industry sectors. The objective being to make viable in economic and environmental terms projects that might otherwise be stillborn if considered for exploitation by conventional means. The paper mainly discusses 2 concepts focusing on the application of augers for exposed high wall or outcrop coal and micro-tunnelling augers for alluvial gold extraction. These may be considered high mobility 'container' (as in shipping container) packaged, or 'non invasive' mining systems. It is stressed that these are but concepts and have yet to be subjected to rigorous financial or engineering scrutiny. This could only follow their acceptance by, and input from, New Zealand miners. There will also be brief mention of a new modular conveyor system which might have application within the concepts or existing small scale mineral extraction operations and mention of a project currently in progress to apply tangible 'sustainability' to underground coal mining.

The range of environments which control the level of ground support required vary greatly in terms of rock type, rock structure and the mining method used. At the operating mines visited during this review the level of ground support was such that incidence of rock-fall- related accidents were rare. It was also found that methods existed to support most of the conditions encountered. The main problem areas were weak rock, major geological structures, areas of heavy jointing, high development density and areas affected by high mining-induced stresses and blasting. With stope support the level of success was much lower than that achieved in development; the larger spans and more rapid changes in geometry of open stopes compared with cut and fill stoping (where cables were originally used) led to significant problems. Before a useable design method for cable support of stope walls and pillars can be obtained the precise failure mode of the walls and pillars, and the interaction of the support and the rock mass must be investigated.

The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. It is of some interest to note that the Ti02 content as determined by the 34 analysts using unspecified methods ranged from 0-17 per cent to 0·30 per cent. Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

Vein swarms in metamorphic terranes such as the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand provide evidence of past hydrothermal flow systems leading to fault initiation and reactivation. A major episode of hydrofracturing and fluid redistribution occurred during early Cretaceous exhumation of the schist belt. As a result, presently exposed lower greenschist facies greyschists in NW Otago are pervaded by abundant quartz-filled hydraulic extension fractures with associated normal faults hosting quartz¦scheelite¦gold mineralisation. Once the effects of Cenozoic folding have been removed, a regional subhorizontal schist foliation contains an aligned array of subvertical hydrofractures striking NNW, striking parallel to a set of low-slip conjugate normal faults; the array extends over an area >1500 km2 and over a depth interval >5 km. The hydrofracture array comprises a mesh of interlinked extensional-shear and pure extension veins. These veins show mutually cross-cutting relations. The extractive industry has been faced with a situation where there has been no systematic and formalised training and education structure available. Previous structures which were available, e.g. the quarrying diploma and the mining papers as a part of an engineering degree, have suffered the same fate as the Dodo. They are now extinct.   In providing for a training strategy, the past strategies need to be examined and reasons behind their demise examined. This paper examines the reasons for past failures in education and training in the extractives industry, the factors that need to be taken into account in creating an education and training culture, the strategies required, the Government regulations and trans-Tasman agreements, and the quality management which must surround the entire training programme.

Recent exploration by the Cyprus Amax-Highlands Pacific-OMRD Joint Venture at the Frieda River project, PNG has demonstrated the extent of igneous phases, alteration and mineralisation, and the relationships between the various mineralisation styles in this major Cu-Au porphyry-epithermal system. The project area is in the obducted volcano-sedimentary section of the New Guinea mobile belt 78 km NE of Ok Tedi. It is between two major NNE dipping faults interpreted to have undergone thrusting then sinistral shear in the Late Miocene to Recent. The Frieda River Igneous Complex is a 15 km +7 km ovoid area with a central pod of basaltic andesite volcanics with cogenetic diorite to quartz diorite subvolcanic intrusions, and flanking clastic sediments. A series of late-stage, hornblende quartz diorite plugs ring the main igneous mass. The igneous rocks have a normal K calc-alkaline character with a very limited compositional variation. The intrusives are exposed on the eastern flank of the complex and have five mappable units and numerous defined phases. The southeastern quarter of the complex is host to a cluster of at least seven stockwork porphyry copper and skarn-hosted deposits within an area of 4.5 +3.5 km. The Horse-Ivaal and Koki deposits have identified resources totalling 804 mt @ 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.3 ppm Au, and the other deposits are in various stages of exploration. All these deposits are related to the Horse Microdiorite phase of the Complex and are outlined by a zone of potassic-propylitic-SCC alteration. Local overprinting argillic and advanced argillic alteration is related to a separate, post-porphyry mineralisation intrusive phase. The recent emphasis has been on the identification of higher-grade zones using ideas of structural control and specific intrusive-alteration-mineralisation relationships within the known resource areas. An elongate area 13 km x 4 km in the centre of the Complex has advanced argillic alteration in the volcanic rocks. This alteration zone hosts the Nena deposit (52.8 mt @ two per cent Cu and 0.7 ppm Au) and approximately 20 prospects of high sulphidation type. These deposits are distributed along two prominent NW-trending siliceous ridges interpreted as regional scale structures. Nena is a pod of vein and replacement sulphides hosted in a tectonically controlled multiphase breccia that overprints the advanced argillic alteration. The Nena deposit is 4 km from the nearest of the major porphyry occurrences. It is underlain by basemetal veins and minor porphyry mineralisation that are related to the Flimtem Trachyandesite intrusive phase. The recent search for additional Nena-type ore has focussed on the siliceous ridges using detailed structural and geochemical ore control criteria. Widespread, but poorly mineralised, basemetal-bearing carbonate and sulphate veins form a ring around the mineralised area. These veins have sericitic selvages, cut the porphyry mineralisation, but are cut by and locally underlie the silica-alunite phase of the advanced argillic alteration. The current model is that there are discrete intrusive phases responsible for each of major hydrothermal events at Frieda. These include from oldest to youngest:the Koki phase has no related alteration or mineralisation; the dominant Frieda phase has the hornfels, early skarn and minor magnetite-chalcopyrite mineralisation; the Horse phase has the bulk of porphyry copper and skarn-hosted mineralisation and minor basemetal veins; the peripheral Knob phase is barren; and the Flimtem phase has the high sulphidation epithermal deposits and minor porphyry and vein mineralisation. The intrusive phases span the interval 17 to 11.5 Ma and are co-magmatic. They represent discrete batches off the parent magma, rather than simple fractionation products.

I would like to thank The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for inviting us to share with you some of our experiences in the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial minerals in North America. Cometals, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commercial Metals Company, headquartered in Dallas, a public corporation whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sales exceed one billion dollars. Cometals, Inc. is located in New York and specializes in marketing of chemicals as well as raw materials used in the manufacture of steel, refractories, abrasives, glass and ceramics. This makes us one of the larger regular shippers of industrial minerals. Many people are aware that industrial minerals need to be viewed and judged on the merits of their chemical and physical characteristics. In addition you are surely aware that close attention must be paid to the economics of these minerals to determine the appropriate value and competitiveness of the minerals or products delivered at the doorsteps of the consuming work. You may, however, not be aware that the handling and transportation of the mineral is of crucial importance, in fact, the transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the ores marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated and without getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

The Department of Mineral Resources has a statutory responsibility for mine site environmental management and control in New South Wales. The Department is focusing on an environmental management systems (EMS) approach, as a management tool to achieve æbest practiceÆ outcomes both within our own organisation and on mine sites. One of the DepartmentÆs tools is environmental risk assessment and management which incorporates the Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Process (MREMP). The MREMP was introduced many years ago in order to integrate the activities of key stakeholders who may have a material interest in the mine. The MREMP provides an ideal mechanism by which ædue diligenceÆ requirements and environmental management programs can be integrated into mining operations and lead to a sustainable post-mining land use.

Drill blasting is a widely used method for rock fragmentation in mining, quarrying and construction industries. Environmental effects such as air shocks, dust, flying rocks and ground vibration are unavoidable results and undesired effects of blasting. Among these ground vibrations can have a damaging effect and may influence on long distances. Therefore various researchers have developed mathematical models to predict ground vibration after blasting. These models take into account the amount of explosive, distance and several coefficients related to the field under investigation. The developed models to predict ground vibration may yield different results for the same case. Selection of the most suitable model requires engineering judgment and evaluation of models. At this point, a computerised system helps the engineer to evaluate and select the most suitable model in order to design and plan a blasting pattern. The safe charge of explosive and magnitude of vibration after blasting should be predicted beforehand. Therefore a computer program namely 'prediction of blast induced vibration' (P-BIV) has been developed. This paper introduces and presents a computer program (P-BIV) which includes the set of models developed to estimate ground vibration to provide blasting engineers a tool to determine the amount of explosive for safe blasting.

Active geothermal systems occur widely in Sumatra and in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) ofNew Zealand. There are also many occurrences of epithermal gold mineralisation in Sumatra, some of which are economic. Minor sub-economic occurrences of gold have been reported in the TVZ but none have yet been mined. There are both similarities and differences in the nature of the active geothermal systems and mineral deposits in Sumatra and New Zealand, which can be systematically related to the tectonic setting. The thicker crust and consequent predominance of silicic volcanism in New Zealand leads to hydrothermal systems which are little eroded and with limited lateral outflows. The systems in Sumatra are of mixed character, with some of the characteristics of those in andesitic island arcs such as Java or the Philippines, e.g. a higher proportion of systems with identifiable acid magmatic volatiles, a greater potential for deep erosion and lateral outflows than in New Zealand; but modified by the more oblique component of subduction and thickened crust so that some are localised in volcano-tectonic depressions and consequently have high piezometric levels of primary hydrothermal fluid. The unusual occurrence of calcic zeolites in veins associated with gold mineralisation in Sumatra is thought to be indicative of æsatelliteÆ boiling zones along de-gassed hydrothermal outflows.
