When it became apparent early in 1941 that the United States might be drawn into the war, studies were made of the bauxite situation in Arkansas, principally because 9.5 pct of the known bauxite reserves of the country were located in that State. Bauxite mining was then geared for maximum production to supply ore to meet this country's war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the needs of Canada as well. In view of the comparatively small bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive exploratory drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. An alumina plant was erected near Bauxite and an aluminum plant near Hot Springs, Ark., by the Defence Plant Corp. The Metals Reserve Co. established a schedule of prices, arranged for stockpile sites and a buying agency. Operators cooperated to step up production and new ones came into the field. Production Record Prior to 1941, the greatest annual production in Arkansas was 562,892 long tons, dry basis in 1918. During the single month of August 1943, 693,596 long tons were mined—130,704 tons more than for the entire year of 1918. In general the Arkansas bauxite deposits are relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, compared to coal, iron or open-pit copper deposits, are ill-adapted to an expansion in output. Commercial deposits range in horizontal extent from less than an acre to about 40 acres and are usually very irregular in outline. The average thickness of all known workable deposits is between 12 and 15 ft. with a maximum of about 60 ft. The ore bodies are usually somewhat undulating and nearly horizontal although locally some deposits dip as much as IS°. Types of Bauxite Three physical types of bauxite may be recognized: pisolitic, granitic and amorphous. Pisolitic ore is the most common type. It consists of small pebble-like nodules, ranging from the size of a pin head up to several inches in diameter, all set in a fine grained matrix. Transported bauxite is usually- pisolitic. Most residual bauxite is granitic. It is believed not to have moved appreciably from the location where it originally was formed. This is indicated by the fact that it appears to grade into unaltered nephelite syenite, which it overlies. Amorphous ore is the least abundant. It is nonpisolitic and resembles clay, has no characteristic texture, and can be identified definitely only by chemical analysis. FOR several years barite (BaSO4) production has topped such better known minerals as feldspar and fluorspar in annual tonnage and is now well established among our foremost nonmetallic industries. DESCRIPTION Of widespread occurrence in the United States, barite is relatively soft (hardness, 2.5 to 3.5), inert, heavy (specific gravity, 4.5), and is also called "barytes" (sometimes pronounced "bear-i-tease"), "heavy spar" and "tiff." It occurs with granular and earthy structure but usually has coarse, orthorhombic crystallization. It is commonly white, and although occurring in various shades of red, yellow, and gray, barite always gives a white streak and can be scratched by the ordinary prospecting pick. Its softness and weight are usually sufficient to establish field identification. Another aid is the "rotten egg" odor of H2S which sometimes emanates from freshly fractured surfaces. Barite can be readily distinguished from two other minerals which have somewhat similar occurrences and characteristics. The relatively rare celestite, strontium sulphate, has a specific gravity slightly less than 4.00 and gives a distinctively crimson color in a flame test. The very rare witherite, barium carbonate, has a specific gravity of 4.3 but readily effervesces with dilute hydrochloric acid. OCCURRENCE All known commercially important barite deposits in the United States occur as re placements or cavity fillings in schists, shales, limestones, dolomites, and quartzites, or as residual deposits from such formations. In Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Missouri, high-grade barite is recovered as fragments from residual clays covering quartzites and dolomites. In Arkansas, Nevada, and California, barite, usually of lower grade, is mined from replacement deposits. These seven states contributed the entire production reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1945 as given in Table I. Such a large part of this undistributed production came from California that that state probably outranked both Nevada and Tennessee. For the second consecutive year Arkansas was the leading producing state, particularly worthy of note because there was no commercial production of barite there prior to 1941 and because the entire production of Arkansas has come from one large deposit which is being operated by two companies. THE present work was carried out as part of a general program to study the magnitude and concentration dependence of exothermic heats of solution of various metals in liquid tin. Thermodynamic data for the Te-Sn system are very limited, particularly for dilute alloys. Indeed, apart from the prior heat of solution determinations of Pool,1 the only other published values are those of McAteer and seltz2 who carried out electromotive force measurements on solid alloys of compositions from 75 to 95 at. pct Te at temperatures between 543° and 668° K, of Colin and Dro-wart3 who made mass-spectrometric studies of the vapor in equilibrium with solid SnTe, and of Robinson and Bever4 who determined the heat of formation of SnTe by solution calorimetry. The present work thus provides further thermodynamic information for this system, specifically in a temperature range where the solubility of tellurium is very limited. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this investigation has been described previously.' No further discussion of its design or operation will therefore be given here. For each series of measurements a tin bath consisting of approximately 70 g of 99.99 pct pure Sn was carefully weighed out and inserted in the calorimeter which was maintained at the desired temperature to within ± 1/4°c. Tellurium, of 99.999 pct purity, was supplied by Atomergic Chemetals Co., a division of Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp. Approximately 0.0006 to 0.001 g-atom specimens of tellurium were used for each experimental run and these were added to the calorimeter from a temperature of 273" K. Heat of solution values were calculated by analysis of a strip-chart recorder plot of the heat effect accompanying the solution of each sample in the tin bath. The heat capacity of the latter was determined at regular intervals during a series of tellurium drops by using pure tin or tungsten calibration samples, the heat contents of which were obtained from the standard compilation of Hultgren et al5 The composition of the bath was calculated after each drop from a knowledge of the weights of tin and tellurium added. Values of the heat of solution of tellurium at 725" and 775° K are listed in Table I together with the corresponding tellurium contents of the alloys. The data are also plotted as a function of tellurium concentration in Fig. 1, which includes the equivalent data obtained by pool' at 750° K. It can be seen that the heat of solution remains

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE use of zinc dust for precipitating the precious metals from cyanide solutions is well established now in many places, and has many advantages over the shavings method of precipitation. Although much work has been clone on methods of testing zinc dust, as yet no absolutely positive test has been devised to determine the value of the material. Certain facts are known, but often it happens that results on a working scale are not as expected from the laboratory tests. The purpose of this paper is to record some observations made while testing. a large variety of zinc-dust samples in the laboratory. W. J. Sharwood1 has described standard analytical methods, which have been followed, with the changes noted. The regular determinations include zinc oxide, by solution in ammonia and ammonium chloride, lead, and precipitating efficiency. In some cases cadmium was determined by a method similar to that described by J. E. Clennell.2 I will discuss the precipitating-efficiency test in detail. The procedure is as follows: "A solution of potassium silver cyanide is prepared by dissolving 10 grams of silver cyanide (AgCN) and 5 grams of `99 0' potassium cyanide in a little water and diluting up to 1000 cc. It is then adjusted by addition of a little more KCN or AgCN until the solution indicates from 0.12% to 0.15% free KCN by titration with standard silver nitrate. The titration is best made by using a 10-cc. or 20-cc. sample, adding 1 cc. of 2 % potassium iodide, and a slight excess of ammonia, as the end point is then sharper. Or 15 grains of pure crystallized KAg(CN)2 may he dissolved in a liter of water and 1.5 grams KCN added. "Weigh out 0.5 grain zinc dust into a 300-cc. beaker. Add a few cubic centimeters of water and stir until, zinc is well mixed, then pour in 250 cc. of the prepared solution, stirring vigorously. See that all lumps are broken up, and continue stirring for fully five minutes. Stir occasionally (at least every 10 minutes) until the end of two hours from the addition of the solution. Then filter upon an 11-cm. filter, wash precipitate thoroughly, sprinkle with test lead, wrap it carefully in the paper, plaice in a scorifier with about 20 grams test lead, burn paper cautiously in muffle, scorify five minutes, cupel at low temperature and weigh silver. Milligrams silver obtained from 0.5 gram zinc X 0.0606 = percentage precipitating efficiency."'

A preliminary investigation of the collecting effects of various fatty acids in tall oil has led to a conclusion that the collecting power of fatty acids used in flotation increases with increasing un- saturation of the hydrocarbon chain. Linoleic acid was found to be an excellent collector for oxide minerals. TALL oil is a mixture of fatty and resin acids extracted as byproducts in the sulphate pulp industry. In the field of flotation a well-known example of this type of product is Reagent No. 708 of the American Cyanamid Co. Its successful use as a flotation collector with many nonsulphide minerals has been described by Falconer and Crawford.' The composition of crude tall oil varies within wide limits.' " By a number of methods the crude oil may be refined to produce a variety of refined products. This investigation presents a preliminary comparative study of collecting properties of the fatty acids in tall oil. In Finnish tall oils these constituents are primarily palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids.:' The first is a saturated fatty acid having 15 carbon atoms in its hydrocarbon chain, plus one in the carboxyl group. The others have 17-carbon-atom chains and are unsaturated. It is of particular interest to note that palmitic, oleic, lino-leic, and linolenic acids represent increasing degrees of unsaturation with 0, 1, 2, and 3 double bonds, respectively. To test the collecting properties of the four fatty acids separately, the vacuum flotation technique described by Schuhmann and Prakash4 was used. By this method the boundary between flotation and non-flotation conditions was approximately delineated, with the use of ilmenite and several other minerals. Collector concentration and pH were the principal variables. On the basis of information obtained, actual flotation tests were run on an ilmenite-bear-ing ore in a laboratory flotation cell. Through the courtesy of P. Kajanne from the Department of Chemistry, Finland Institute of Technology, the following reagents were obtained for this investigation: 1—Palmitic acid, of Judex, had a purity of 95 pct as determined by parallel iodo-metric and spectrophotometric measurements. 2— Oleic acid, product of May and Baker Ltd., indicated purity of 98 pct. By iodometric and spectrophoto-metric determinations the oleic acid content was found to be 83.8 pct. In addition, it contained 6 pct linoleic, 1 pct linolenic, and 9.2 pct saturated fatty acids.' 3—Linoleic acid was prepared from soybean oil by low-temperature crystallization. THE fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and- indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion based on all the data available in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil- and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin, Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1,093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1,200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the sane formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south,. range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1,707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2,525 ft. (769 m.). EVERY new mining district has had its own peculiar experiences in inventing and experimenting upon new methods for the various operations of mining, and more particularly in the processes of crushing and dressing ores. As a matter of course, during this period many old things have been reinvented, patented, and cast aside, there to remain until at a future day other geniuses shall bring them forth again as new. In this respect the Copper Region of Michigan has not been behind other mining centres, and probably in no other part of the country has more money been expended in devising new machines and improvements upon old ones for the crushing of the rock. The appliances for washing the sand have not been so varied, simply for the reason that, having but one mineral, or rather metal, of high specific gravity to separate from rock material which varies but little in its character in any one mine, it requires much less care than is necessary in most mining centres of the world. At the beginning of operations in that district most of the work was in the control of Cornish miners, who introduced the simplest of Cornish mills, namely, wooden stem pestles, with wooden shafts and cams. These were well suited to the small mines, and particularly to the limited means of transporting more expensive machinery. As these facilities improved, they were enabled to change to iron, and to vary their patterns of rods, shafts, cams, and mortars. The most approved pattern, finally obtained, is the square or round stem, with collar adjustable by means of keys. In its present form it is a bar of cold rolled shafting, an eye in the top, an adjustable collar with key-plate and keys, the head and a shoe of chilled iron. The stem is fitted into the head by a slight taper. The battery has heretofore been of wood, lined with chilled cast plates, and bed-plate of the same, but within the past year the California pattern has been introduced. The screens are of sheet-steel, drilled with 16 holes to the inch. During this period of trial and gradual improvement in the pestle stamps, in the years 1855-6, the Ball steam-stamps were intro¬duced, and after years of labor and expense, have been made the most efficient and powerful machines ever yet used for the purpose. Christopher R. Corning was one of the ablest mining engineers and geologists in America and one whose name was well known also in Mexico, Cuba, South America and many European countries. He was educated at Zurich, Switzerland, and at the Bergakademie, Freiberg, where he was graduated in 1883 with the degrees of Markscheider and Bergingenieur. He continued his studies at Heidelberg until 1886, chiefly in chemistry, under Bunsen, and mineralogy and petrography under Rosenbusch. Although he received a Ph.D. in chemistry, he never used the title. During holidays of 1883-86, he traveled, seeing mines and studying geology in Spain, France, England, Italy, Germany, and Austria. In 1886, he returned to America and in 1887 he was in the Lake Superior iron ore country on the staff of John F. Stevens, then building the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway. In 1889, Mr. Corning was at the Bunker Hill & Sullivan mines at Wardner, Idaho, with John Hays Hammond, and there met E. E. Olcott. Although Mr. Corning was not long connected with the Bunker Hill & Sullivan mines, he left the imprint of his ability and splendid personality upon the men and the property. That his friendship was cherished was manifested by the cordiality, hospitality and frequency of letters of good counsel and cheer. In 1897, Mr. Corning, with E. E. Olcott and Prof. Robert Peele of Columbia University, formed the firm of Olcott, Corning & Peele, consulting mining engineers. Pressure of university duties compelled Professor Peele to withdraw in 1904, and later Mr. Olcott was forced to retire by reason of other important business interests, but the friendship and high mutual regard of the three men continued undiminished. About 1902, Mr. Corning and Professor Peele translated into English Riemer's book on "Shaft Sinking under Difficult Conditions." Mr. Corning's knowledge of structural geology, mineralogy and ore deposits was extensive and accurate. He was a close and intelligent observer. When he became interested in a problem, no amount of trouble was too great in endeavoring to reach a satisfactory solution. He had professional experience in the West, notably in the Coeur d'Alenes, Mexico and South America, and several times was called on to attempt to straighten up mismanaged properties. In 1912, at the request of a large number of members, Mr. Corning headed the "Committee of FiveJ' that investigated the affairs of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and brought about beneficial changes in the organization and its policies. Intevdiffusion and intrinsic diffusiorz coefficients were determined in the uranium-niobium system from diffusion couples analyzed with an electron microbeam probe. A Previously unveported intermediate phase, designated in this report as the delta phase, was found to exist along the mobium-rich side of the miscibility gap. Its composition width was determined from the concentration gradients in the diffusion couples. The presence of this phase was also confirmed by microhardness analysis and metallographic observations. THE excellent corrosion resistant properties, high-temperature strength and reasonable nuclear properties of niobium have prompted its use as an alloying element with uranium and as a possible cladding material for reactor fuel elements. Hence the formation and growth of intermetallic phases as well as diffusion data for the uranium-niobium system are of considerable practical importance to metallurgists and nuclear engineers. Diffusion zones may exhibit varying degrees of complexity dependi.ng upon the mutual solubility of the metals involved, and the intermediate phases which may form. In the simplest case where the metals exhibit a calmplete range of solid solubility, a single phase region is produced. Generally, however, the metals may react to produce a multiphase diffusion zone containing several layers of intermetallic phases. A number of investigatorsl-6 have analyzed the concentration gradients present in diffusion couples in order to investigate phase equilibria and solu- bility limits. If diffusion is the rate-controlling process in establishing a concentration gradient, the compositions at the interfaces of the intermediate phases will represent the equilibrium values expected from the phase diagram at the temperature at which diffusion has taken place. No published information is available at this time on diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A number of investigators7-" have contributed information to the construction of the uranium-niobium phase diagram from other than diffusion techniques. There is good agreement on the high uranium side of the phase diagram, but the high niobium side of the miscibility gap still remains somewhat in doubt. The phase diagram as determined by B. A. Rogers, et al.7 is shown in Fig. 1. The present work was aimed at obtaining fundamental information about the solubility limits of the miscibility gap and diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A Kirkendall effect, which might be expected on the basis of the rather large difference in melting points between uranium (1132°C) and niobium (2415" C), was also investigated. The concentration gradients were measured by an electron microbeam probe technique, similar to that used by Castaing,l2 Adda and philibert,13, l4 and Macres.4

In an investigation of various equiatomic alloys of transition elements, Dwightl did not find evidence for the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn. More recently waterstrat2 has reported the occurrence of this structure in the alloy his sample had been homogenized at 1150°C and subsequently reannealed at 725°C after crushing to powder. The purpose of this note is to confirm the existence of the CsC1-type ordered structure in VMn and to report a lattice parameter. An equiatomic alloy was prepared by arc-melting under an argon atmosphere vanadium and electrolytic manganese having a purity of at least 99.9 pet. The composition was obtained by charging an excess of manganese and monitoring the weight loss until the stoichiometric composition was achieved; the assumption that the loss during melting was due to the vaporization of manganese appears to be a valid one.' The calculated composition of the sample prepared was 49.85 at. pct V and 50.15 at. pct Mn. Specimens taken from the fractured as-cast buttons were wrapped in molybdenum foil and encapsulated in quartz capsules under vacuum; there was no evidence of a reaction between the alloy and foil. The X-ray patterns were obtained using filtered copper or chromium radiation with a Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera having a diameter of 114.6 mm. The CrKa radiation is best suited for detecting the superlattice lines since it overcomes the slight difference in scattering powers of the components by making use of the anomalies in atomic scattering factor which occur when the frequency of the radiation is close to the characteristic absorption frequency of one of the elements.394 A specimen in the as-cast condition, as well as one which had been annealed for 1 week at 900°C and water-quenched, gave a diffraction pattern for the disordered bcc solid solution. However, when samples were homogenized at 900°C for 3 weeks followed by a subsequent anneal at 700°C for 6 to 7 weeks and then water-quenched or furnace-cooled, the (loo), (1111, and (210) Ka superlattice lines were observed in films taken with chromium radiation. An ao = 2.904 * 0.001 was determined by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation from a film taken with CuKa radiation. The author wishes to thank Mr. J. W. Downey and Mr. L. J. THE internal friction of nonferrous metals vibrating at low stress amplitudes has so far always been successfully interpreted in terms of inhomogeneities of one sort or another. Examples are the fluctuation of stress across a specimen vibrating transversely,1,2,3 the stress inhomogeneities due to the elastic anisotropy and partial random orientation of the individual crystallites,4,5 localized weak regions introduced by cold-working,6,7 grain boundaries and possibly twinning planes.8,9 Perfect single crystals are, by definition, homogeneous. Actual single crystals usually, perhaps always, contains some imperfections. The present investigation. was undertaken to determine whether the internal friction of single crystals may likewise be attributed to inhomogeneities. This study was made possible through the gift of a large single crystal of 70-30 alpha brass by H. L. Burghoff, of the Chase Brass and Copper Co. The specimen, ½ in. in diameter and 10 in. long, was similar to samples previously described by Mr. Burghoff.10 EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method used has previously been described in Institute papers.5,6,9 The measure of internal friction adopted here, 1/Q, is (1/p) X the logarithmic decrement, a measure used by some writers, and is also (1/2p) X the specific damping capacity, a measure used by other writers. In all measurements the stress level was kept so low that the measurements were independent of stress level. In all measurements in which the temperature was varied, observations were made as the specimen slowly cooled from its highest temperature. The specimen was vibrated transversely. Observations were made at the funda¬mental frequency and at the first overtone, of about 620 and 1710 cycles per second, respectively. No attempt was made to avoid acoustical losses. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The specimen was annealed for several hours at 450°C. The temperature dependence of the internal friction was then determined from room temperature to 400°C. As shown in Fig. 1, the internal friction increased by only a factor of 2 from room temperature to 300°C., then by a factor of l00 during the next 100° interval. These measurements are consistent with the view that the observed internal friction is the superposition of two distinct parts. One, dominant at room temperature, is nearly independent of temperature. This part may be accounted for by acoustical losses and by transverse thermal currents. It was not further investigated. The second part, when plotted in the manner of Fig. I, lies upon a straight line. Therefore it has a heat of activation H; i.e., it varies with temperature as Internal friction e~H/RT [I]

THE following paper describes current mining practices of the Riverside Cement Co. at its Crestmore plant, Riverside, California. For a number of years the Riverside Cement Co. obtained its raw materials by surface quarry operations but after these deposits were exhausted for equipment available at that time, the company started underground mining. Mine workings were begun in 1927 to 1930 for the recovery of limestone by block-caving methods. GEOLOGY The bed of limestone that is being worked is a metamorphosed and recrystallized limestone, which is generally white in color and from medium to coarsely crystalline. This bed is fissured by water courses that vary from minute cracks to large areas. The bed has also been cracked by intrusions along the footwall and hanging wall. These walls are coarse-grained, gray, quartz granodiorite. The strike of the deposit is north and south and it dips to the east at an angle of approximately 50º. The bed is approximately 1700 ft. long, 270 ft. thick at right angles to the dip at the middle of the deposit and tapers to a thickness of approximately 100 ft. at each end. MINING METHODS The mine layout consists of four main levels with elevations as follows: 892 Collar of shaft. 800 Manway level used for ventilation, prospect purposes and as an entrance into the stopes. 700 Mining level where all material is extracted and on which are located the tapping grizzlies. This is the elevation from which all main cutoff stopes and undercutting work is started. 660 Haulage level where the limestone is drawn from transfer raises into the cars and is transported to the tipple by electric locomotives. 633 Level where all water is collected and which keeps the general water table below the working levels. A detailed description of the mine was given in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 6795, in June 1934. Current Block Development The first blocks to be caved were developed very much after the procedure followed in the copper mines of Arizona. This paper covers the ninth block to be caved. With a hard, tough rock like our limestone, it was found that some alterations in the development and control of draw in caving were necessary to secure better crushing effect and provide more safety for such secondary blasting as is required. The fringes of the 800-ft. manway level are driven to confirm the diamond drill information and serve to determine the final location and development required for the block (Fig. I).

DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. This chapter will deal with the policy issues relating to mineral land disposal. The first portion of the chapter will discuss in general terms the legal systems utilized in disposing of mineral rights and the major problems encountered; the second section will comprise an analysis of the policy alternatives with emphasis on the pricing aspects. In this section, we are not attempting to provide a legal text, but simply to outline very briefly and sketchily the details of the systems. More detailed information can be obtained by contacting the appropriate governmental agency for specific information. Mining laws throughout the world are based on two major legal groupings: English Common Law and the Civil Law. These basic systems are often modified by Islamic Law and by negotiated -mixtures of these. Under English Common Law, which is embraced by the United States, Canada, and many of the members of the British Commonwealth of Nations, individuals can hold property and can extract minerals from it. The owner can dispose of minerals as he sees fit, either through contract, deed, or whatever other system is appropriate. CIVIL LAW Under Civil Law (also known as Regalian Law), mineral ownership is normally placed in the state, regardless of who owns the surface. This legal system applies in most European countries and their former colonies. It is derived from Roman law. The mineral deposits, thus, are worked under concessions. Most countries use a negotiated concession system and sometimes a combination of negotiation and competitive leasing. The negotiated system has advantages as well as disadvantages for both government and industry. In a system where the government administratively determines who is to get what, the concessions are normally large. Frequently they range up to several millions of acres and involve a considerable investment on the part of the concessionaire. There is no duplication of effort on the part of producers to obtain information, since a single concessionaire controls a given area. Consequently, less money is spent in toto because several prospective operators are not required to seek the same information. The system also has the advantage to the industry of permitting the concessionaire to select and retain the best producting area. Thus, major developmental expenditures are made on the production unit only, with a resulting reduction in the risk factor. The large initial size of the concession also minimizes the possibility of expending a large bonus payment for a barren property. The major governmental advantage of a concession is its flexibility in accomplishing other national objectives. For example, a lease could be negotiated at less than fair market value, but requiring substantial de-

LINFORTH, Butte, Mont.:-I have not had an opportunity of reading this paper thoroughly, but I would like to call attention to the possible use of the contours on fault planes. It is obvious that if the contours of fault surfaces call be determined, we will be able to determine the axes of the hollows in the fault surface. It seems probable, and there are examples to point to the accuracy of, the assumption, that the axes of these hollows may be the direction of movements on the faults, and if that is true it will aid materially in locating faulted ore bodies or the shoots of ore on the opposite sides of faults. A few such contour maps of faults have been attempted on some of the faults of the Butte district, and those faults which are believed to have the nearly normal movement exhibit for the axes of these hollows a line nearly up and down in the plane of the fault, but in those cases where the throw is believed to bee nearly horizontal we find that the axes of the hollows are almost horizontal lines. In other words, the movements on faults, I believe, would be more nearly indicated by the larger grooves in the fault surfaces than by the small slickensides and minor hollows that are seen, so that contour maps might be valuable in geology in that way. C. W. GOODALE, Butte, Mont.:-I received a letter from Mr. Woodruff asking me to take part in the discussion of his paper, but I have not had time to give the paper any study. I can certainly add my opinion to that of all the engineers here that the topographic maps of the government are of great aid to the engineer. When I visit a new district, the first thing I do is to see if that district has been covered by the U. S. Geological Survey avid if topographic map has been issued. And I find that some of the younger engineers frequently come into my office to see if I have such maps. I know in some cases the reports made out by engineers contain copies of these topographic maps, or clippings from them. I am sure that. the topographic maps furnished by the government are of very great value to our engineers.

AS If see it, then, the engineering advances of which yob have studied here at Golden, the continued growth of. industry that you see about you here in Colorado, and the country-wide progress that I have not time to discuss-these illuminating facts should clear away any doubts as to your future. You have little license to ask, "Where is the call for engineering or what the need? Yankee fashion I might ask you by way of reply, "Have all the mines been opened? Have all the power-houses and transmission lines been built? Have the last improvements in. mill and smelter been in-stalled?" We know that the general answer is No, and the rest of the answer, which tells where are those mines and power plants and what are the new methods and processes in mining and metallurgy, must be sup-plied by you engineers of the future. And anyone who has even casually observed what recent years have brought forth in our profes- sion cannot but envy you your job. Our reconnaissance excur-sion into your future should not be much longer extended, but before turning back there are four landmarks that I would like to point out-not lofty peaks but useful tie points that are worthy of your attention as you traverse the territory of your future work. Two of these are in fact low spots or depressed areas which call for engineering activity; these are commonly called "waste" and "average." The other two are of larger significance and are rather extensive regions in the domain you are to enter and occupy. These larger tracts bear the suggestive place names "fact-finding" and "human engineering" and perhaps will prove to be the heights from which the broadest outlook is to be had in this "pilgrim's progress:" In the first place, waste deserves your attention, al-though I realize that it is possibly the most unpopular word anyone hailing from Washington can publicly utter. Its unpopularity naturally follows from its overuse in the somewhat strong charges made against the industrial and business world some years ago, when the doctrine of conservation was first preached in the land. But waste is a word to be used in an engineering sense as well as for political effect. Properly used, waste is not a word to shy at-rather it is a challenge to the engineer. For example, at present, the loss of 1 kilowatt-hour to every 5 sold is a clarion call to the electrical engineer. Waste is your target to shoot at, the obstacle for you to surmount, the giant for you to slay.

The fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion, based on all the data available, in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil-and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain ; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite, and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the same formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south, range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2525 ft. (769 m.). Mr. DeLaat watched the drilling of this well very closely and he has described to me in some detail the formation immedi-

The application of indium to bearings was first advocated by C. F. Smsrtl in 1938, for the purpose of inhibiting corrosion of certain bearing alloys. He found that a thin layer of indium plated on the bearing surface and subsequently diffused at elevated temperatures markedly decreased the rate of corrosion in lubricating oils containing organic? acids. Most of his work was done on cadmium-base alloys, although he showed that the treatment was also effective for copper-lead and other; alloys. Since their introduction, indium-treated bearings have found considerable use, particularly in connection with airplane motors.2 Undoubtedly the effectiveness of the indium plate in resisting corrosion depends upon its relative concentration on the bearing surface after the diffusion treatment and after prolonged use at operating temperatures. Some diffusion experiments were made on a number of base metals that had been indium plated, to determine the depth of penetration after heating for reasonably long periods of time. As only the practical aspects were desired, no attempt was made to determine actual diffusion constants. Method Two different series of experiments were carried out to study the diffusion of indium into several base metals. Cast cylinders about one-inch diameter were machined to 0.750-in. diameter, so as to remove all surface imperfections, and final finishing was done with oo sandpaper. The original diameters were very carefully measured with micrometers and then a layer of indium was electrolytically deposited on the cylinders from a sulphate bath.3 In the first series of experiments, about 0.002 in. of indium' was deposited and diffusion, was carried out at 150°C. for a period of 500 hr. in a thermostatically controlled electric oven. After the diffusion period, successive layers were machined from the specimens and analyzed spectro-graphically and chemically—the spectro-graphic examination serving as a guide to determine which layers should be chemically analyzed. Apparently there was some surface oxidation of the indium plate due to the long heat-treatment, which may have had some effect on the diffusion. A1so, the cadmium alloy showed some incipient melting, which probably was caused by the formation of a low-melting eutectic. To eliminate these factors, another series of experiments was carried out by heating in an electrically heated, automatically controlled, oil bath at lower temperature. The preparation of the specimens was the same as before except that a layer of indium 0.0001 in. thick, an amount commonly used commercially on bearings, was deposited on each of the cylinders. J. T. SINGEWALD, JR., Baltimore, Md.-I might say a word further in regard to the Miguel-Burnier district. I am sorry Mr. Harder is not here. I had hoped to be able to ask him a few questions in regard to some of the features of those deposits. This Miguel-Burnier district is the other district that I referred to that lies in the State of Minas Geraes. The interpretation that Mr. Harder gives to, these deposits is the same as that given by Harder' and Chamberlin in a previous paper, and that is that they consist of lenticular deposits of sedimentary origin in a series of rocks that also include lenses of limestone, but they seem to think that the manganese ores occur at a definite horizon and at a horizon different from the limestone. We found that the manganese ores occur at several horizons, as also do the limestone lenses, and the limestone masses are of the same shape as the manganese orebodies, so that our own feeling was that these manganese ores simply represent concentrations within the zone of oxidation formed as. a result of decomposition and replacement of this limestone. To the east of Miguel-Burnier there is a big bend in the railroad which cuts through, at right angles to the strike, this series of rocks. Here is shown very well both the local character of the limestone lenses and the local character of the manganese lenses in that, though the distance across the bend is only a couple of hundred yards, the limestone and. ,manganese lenses do not match up at all, and it also shows plainly that both occur at more than one horizon.. Consequently there is no reason why the manganese ore could not represent alterations of this limestone. The mine workings do not as yet give very definite information on this point in that they are all comparatively shallow and within what would be the zone of oxidation so that what they will grade into below that depth, we do not know. On the other hand, the character of the ore suggests that it may, represent such -a product in the zone of oxidation in that it tends to be quite earthy; whereas, if the manganese had been there originally as such it would have undergone the same metamorphism that the other rocks have undergone and one would have expected that it would have been converted into a hard manganese ore that would today stand out pretty much as do the iron ores of that same region and not have the soft, earthy texture which is a prevailing characteristic.

For several years past, dating particularly from the days of serious "ore-dirt" complications at the Warwick furnace, I have been desirous of providing some safe, quick and easy method of relieving the tuyeres of slag, when the cinder- and iron-notches are chilled through loss of heat in the clucible or when, from dropping or jumping of stock, the molten slag is forcibly driven into the bellyand leg-pipes. Various methods were proposed, but objections of one kind or another always presented themselves, and the subject was postponed to a more convenient season. In the summer of 1887, while running on anthracite alone, 1 found the various expedients in use to be so utterly valueless, that the importance of a practicable tuyere slagging-valve impressed me more forcibly than ever. The holes left in the cast-iron jacket at one side of the bottom of the water-blocks were found to be of no value whatever. The swinging or hinged cap on the elbow of the belly-pipe, while convenient to permit the removal of lag after the belly-pipe was partially or wholly filled, could not be adapted to discharge the slag before solidifying, except at great risk to the men and loss of time just when the constant running of the engine and the keeping of blast on the furnace was of the utmost importance. By removing keys from the caps and holding them in place with props, the slag could be discharged through the tuyeres and belly-pipes, with the engine running, by knocking the props away at a given signal. This method is extremely hazardous to life and limb, and I have always hesitated to make use of it. When the furnace is in such condition as to require the adoption of some method of the kind, the stoppage of the engine, cooling the blast and the contents of the crucible, always aggravates the trouble. When the caps are blown open and the slag is discharged by removal of the props, it is necessary to stop the engine to replace them. An hour or more will elapse before this can be done, as the slag must be partly removed before the tuyeres can be approached by ordinary mortals, and the caps handled and fastened in place again. Any movement of the stock is liable to burn the workman, as he stands, securing the cap in front or at one side of the open belly-pipe.
