This paper describes the method of mining a steeply pitching anthracite seam on a heavy pitch in the Orchard vein in No. 1 Tunnel of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co. The Orchard vein in the Neaquehoning district has a thickness of about 15 ft. on the level of the gangway, which is sufficient thickness for the gangway to be driven full width in coal. Above the gangway, the vein becomes thinner and near the surface is about 8 it. thick. The coal is of good hard quality and carries a fairly good roof. The pitch of the vein is between 65" and 70". Usually the breast-and-pillar method has been employed in the mining of the steeply pitching veins in this section. This method produced good results as far as the mining of the breast was concerned but the recovery of the pillar was difficult as to full extraction and expensive as regards costs. To recover these pillars after the breasts were driven, three methods were commonly employed; they were known as the pillar-breast method, pillar-skipping method, and pillar-chute method. The pillar-breast method consisted in putting a battery in one corner of the pillar (Fig. I), coupling the manways A and B of the two adjacent breasts for two or three lengths ahead of the working face of the pillar being cut, and working the pillar as a breast. This method was used by the more skilled miners of the earlier days but has practically been abandoned. A slight variation of this method is used to some extent. In this case, the pillars are left wider than ordinarily and of sufficient width for the full-width breast to be driven in and a small pillar left on each side of the pillar breast between it and the regular breasts. With the completion of the "pillar breast," the ribs are drilled full of holes, loaded, and fired. In the pillar-skipping method (Fig. 2), the middle breast of three is not driven through and is drawn empty while the outside and inside breasts are kept full. At the corners of the two pillars standing, batteries are put in and a skip of the two pillars started; the coal in the two pillars is blasted over into the empty breast. AT the present time, there appear to be two conflicting opinions on the solubility of boron in titanium. P. Ehrlich' has indicated from X-ray diffraction work that boron is soluble in titanium up to TiB0.8 (17.8 wt pct, 44 atomic pct). The X-ray diffraction pattern for titanium was found in compositions up to TiB0.05_0.07 (1.1 to 1.6 wt pct); then, without a phase gap, superlattice lines appeared up to TiB0.8 On the other hand, Craighead, Simmons, and Eastwood' have estimated the solubility of boron in both alpha and beta titanium to be less than 0.1 wt pct, based on results of metallographic analysis. In some recent work done at Battelle, results were obtained which shed more light on the titanium-rich end of the titanium-boron system. Iodide-type titanium and high-purity crystalline boron were used in this investigation. The boron was prepared by hydrogen reduction of boron tri-bromide and deposition on a hot tungsten wire. The alloys were prepared by arc melting in an argon atmosphere of 10 cm Hg pressure on a water-cooled copper hearth. The ingots were hot rolled to strip at 850°C. Alloys containing up to 1 pct B could be hot rolled. Those containing 2 pct or more B could not be hot rolled. Metallographically, it was found that a second phase was present in alloys containing as little as 0.4 pct B, and that the quantity of second phase increased with increasing boron content. This is illustrated in Figs. la and lb, which show the microstructures of a Ti-0.4B and a Ti-1B alloy annealed in argon at 850°C. X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys containing 1 and 5 pct B revealed the presence of extra lines which correspond to the superlattice lines reported by Ehrlich.' However, no evidence was found of a shift in the lattice constants of alpha titanium indicating that there is very little, if any, solubility of boron in alpha titanium. This fact, coupled with the fact that the alloys were definitely two-phase, indicates that the extra lines are not superlattice lines, but are more probably the result of a second phase of a hexagonal structure almost identical in cell

The mineral pyrite (or marcasite) occurs in coal beds as balls, lenses, veinlets and bands. Several million tons are w-asted annually on the refuse dumps from coal mining and coal-preparation activities. Sporadic attempts have been made in the United States to recover this pyrite for manufacture of sulphuric acid but only a few plants have succeeded in recovering it on a commercial scale. Shipments of pyrite from coal mines during 1941 were reported as follows: Illinois -The Midland Electric Coal Corp., Henry County, shipped 12,026 long tons containing 46 pct sulphur, at its Atkinson preparation plant. Indiana—The Snow Hill Coal Corp. produced pyrite from its Talleydalc preparation plant in Vigo County. Kansas—The Mineral Products Co. produced 3902 long tons of pyrite containing 44 pct of sulphur from picking table and washery refuse. Specifications for coal pyrite for acid manufacture rangc from 5 to 8 pct maximum carhon limit, and 42 to 45 pct minimum sulphur limit. Where flash roasting is practiced, the pyrite must be minus 100-mesh. Most companies give no size specifications. One company specifies 20- mesh or finer. Impurities in pyrite other than carbon may limit its use—for instance, arsenic, probably as arseno pyrite-—even though a concentrate can be made complying with specifications otherwise. Pyrite-recovery Plants Bradford breakers and picking tables may be used to make a marketable product where the pyrite occurs largely in sizes coarser than about I in. To make a grade of concentrate acceptable to sulphuric-acid plants the pyrite must break freely from the accompanying coal and slate, which is a rare condition to find. Most pyrite occurring in coal beds requires crushing and an abrasive type of grinding to free it of entwined coal and slate, followed by mechanical concentration by jigs, tables or other concentrating devices suitable for heavy ores, to make a satisfactory concentrate. At the Snow Hill Coal Corporation's plant in Indiana and at the Midland Electric Corporation's plant at Xtkinson, Ill., the final concentrate is made by a mechanical jig. The most recent and complete mill for concentrating pyritc from coal-mine refuse is that of the Mineral Products Co. at West Mineral, Kans., in which jigs and tables are used. OUR mineral-land laws need revising so as to provide definite title at the outset to the mineral deposits within any definite piece of land. The laws as they now stand, especially those applicable to lodes, breed uncertainty as to rights of possession prior to patent; and to my mind this is the worst feature of all, worse even than the apex bugbear. It is now almost impossible for anybody to tell with certainty what mineral rights exist within any area that is not covered y patent, or whether any valid rights exist at all. Our system is unique in permitting individuals to appropriate and exploit mineral lands of the public domain without notice of any kind to the Federal government, and to relinquish them without any ceremony at all. The result is a clouded record that cannot be cleared' up until each claimant is put to some sort of final proof. In order to accomplish this, new Federal legislation will be required. The requirements for a mineral survey and the proceedings for patent have always been cumbersome and expensive; and perhaps out of regard for the poor claim owner, who can ill afford the outlay for that sort of thing, the law does not require him to go through it unless he chooses to do so. Consequently, every active mining district has become encumbered with tangled groups of doubtful or conflicting locations, whose rights and boundaries, when any valuable ore is found, must usually be determined by lawsuits that are as expensive and as distressing as the stakes are high. So deeply has litigation entered into our mining system that a claim whose rights have never been disputed would probably be set down offhand, y a miner of the old school, as of no value. Think of the litigation over rights of possession on the Comstock lode-12 leading companies involved in an aggregate of 245 suits within a period of less than eight years! Ambiguous local records; the chance of erroneously placed or obliterated monuments; doubt as to the sufficient performance of the statutory annual labor; uncertainty as to prior conflicting or overlapping locations; anxiety as to the changing attitude of the Department of the Interior and the Forest Service-such considerations as these make an unpatented mining claim an unclean thing in the eyes of possible investors. How to interpret the composition of rocks has been a question which has caused a great deal of discussion and investigation among geologists and chemists. It is evident that that analysis will give the clearest results, which will give the relative proportion of the different minerals composing the rock as well as the weight of their different constituents. This, however, is a very difficult matter, and in those rocks which seem to the naked eye entirely compact, like obsidian and other rocks of that class, appears to be impossible. Cordier, in the early part of the century, invented a process which is known as the " mechanical analysis of rocks," which is really a method of mechanical preparation, and consists in crushing the rock to a certain fineness, and then, by virtue of their density, washing out the different minerals, so as to make a mineralogical analysis, separating completely the different constituents of the rocks. In the hands of so skilful a man, this was a comparatively easy matter, and Cordier found no difficulty in ascertaining the mineralogical composition of a rock. The ultimate chemical composition was ascertained from the sum of the elements contained in the different materials. In the light of to-day, it is very easy to see that the complete chemical analysis of the rock does not necessarily lead to the explanation of its character. It has been so difficult, however, to have any other kind of analysis made that most chemical examinations have been made as ultimate, and not as mineralogical analyses. The panning out of the different minerals composing the rock, which are often very nearly of the same specific gravity, is so difficult that a person of ordinary mechanical skill is scarcely able to do it; consequently the mechanical analysis which Cordier proposed, and was able himself so skilfully to effect, has never been practiced to any extent. A school was formed in France consisting of a very small number of Cordier's followers, which, in face of the difficulty of acquiring the method, very soon died out as a school, though some of his most skilful followers are still living. The following notes are presented in an endeavor to point out the disadvantages attending the use of chrome brick in reverberatory furnaces in which are conducted the treatment of materials of such a nature that absorption by the brick is of too great value to be wasted, and these values must be recovered, if possible, in order to prevent metal losses that can not be tolerated. Several years ago one of the large Eastern copper refineries decided to utilize basic material in place of siliceous material in the walls of their reverberatory furnaces for the treatment of very foul blister copper, as the latter rapidly corroded the siliceous linings. It was also expected that there would be less slag formation, with a consequent decrease in the cost of treatment and a reduction in the metal losses. Magnesite brick were first used, but while the corrosive action of the foul material was greatly reduced, and the amount of slag formed was very much less, the magnesite proved to be unsatisfactory in certain parts of the furnace, because of its tendency to crack and spall badly when subjected to the alternate heating and cooling that takes place in a reverberatory refining furnace. This made many repairs necessary, and consequent frequent interruption in the operation of the furnace, which, together with the high price of the magnesite brick, ran up the cost of maintenance to an unreasonable amount. It was, therefore, decided to substitute chrome brick for magnesite brick in the parts of the furnace affected. The results, as far as the reverberatory furnace was concerned, were very satisfactory. The corrosion due to the action of the foul blister was small and the amount of slag formed was no greater than when using magnesite, and the tendency to crack and spall shown by the magnesite was eliminated. Gradually the use of chrome brick was extended to all furnaces, those treating blister copper as well as those melting cathodes, and the results were so satisfactory that the siliceous roofs were replaced by roofs of chrome brick except in certain places where experience showed a more satisfactory performance on the part of the silica brick. THERE is little quantitative information available concerning the effect of applied stress, in both the elastic and plastic ranges, on diffusion kinetics. Accordingly, a program has been undertaken to determine the rate of self-diffusion in high purity iron, with the specimens subjected to stress during the course of diffusion. Results are reported here for body-centered cubic iron at a diffusion temperature of 890°C. The iron used was 99.97 pct Fe, the principal impurities being 0.002 pct C, 0.008 pct 0, and 0.02 pct Si. The surface-decrease method of self-diffusion analysis was employed, and Fe55 Mn x-radiation, 2.9 years half-life) was the tracer element. Details of specimen preparation and equipment are given elsewhere.' Disks of the high purity iron, % in. diam x 1/4 in. thick, were annealed at 890°C for 18 hr in dry hydrogen to produce large grains of a ferrite. The faces of the disks were then surface ground, and possible grinding stresses were relieved by annealing at 890 °C for 45 min in vacuum. A layer of radioactive iron 0.00186 cm thick was electroplated on one face of each disk. The self-diffusion coefficient was calculated from the ratio of the radiation intensities emanating from each of these faces, as measured before and after diffusion.' The heating was carried out in a vacuum furnace (10-5 mm Hg) controlled to ±1.5°C. The specimens were loaded in compression between two quartz disks during the diffusion runs by means of a lever system operating through a vacuum seal. Thus one quartz disk was pressed directly against the radioactive face of the specimen, minimizing the vapor loss of radioactive iron. Steady-state creep occurred in all instances where permanent deformation could be detected, but the specimens did not exhibit appreciable transverse barreling until natural strains of 0.2 to 0.3 were attained. Essentially, the diffusion took place under uniaxial stress. Controlled pre-grouting is a technique developed during a period of more than ten Years experience, in an effort to produce safer, drier and more economical mine shaft sinking. The technique involves a knowledge Of hydro-mechanics, both static and dynamic, and a series of specially formulated grout mixtures to obtain several desired results through precontrolled setting time. In general, the following procedures have been used to secure the best results in controlled pre-grouting: I. Before drilling is commenced, One Of two decisions is made: one procedure, a modified form of the Francois method, is to stage drill and grout, that is, drill a limited portion of the hole, then grout and redrill that section which has been grouted, progressing in stages until the required depth is reached. We prefer this method because no casing Or grouting packers are required in the bore hole. This eliminates the risk of losing them in the bore hole due to packer failure, which might result in the expense of drilling a new grout hole. Another feature Of this approach is that smaller drill holes may be effectively used, further reducing the costs. One drawback, however, is that because of the open and small size hole, it is impractical to attempt water draw-down tests. The second alternative is to drill the bore hole, (generally NX size), to the re-quire~ depth. he casing and grouting packer are placed in the bore hole at the lowest packer setting. A small, portable, power driven, swabbing device is used in the grouting casing to test the packer and remove mud or cuttings from the bore hole below the packer. The hydrostatic level is recorded and a close estimate or test is made of the quantity of water at each packer setting. Grouting progresses upward in a series of packer settings to the surface. Occasionally, casing is inserted in the bot-tom of the bore hole from within the mine, and water pressure and volume can be obtained in this manner. This is usually dangerous because of the unknown quantity of water. 2. The grouting, mining and geological engineers at the drill location make a detailed examination of the cores and also locate proper and firm grouting packer locations. THE high temperature of the blast of modern furnaces renders it desirable that the pipe conveying the blast into the furnace crucible shall transmit and radiate as little heat as possible. To accomplish this, the pipe shown in the accompanying sketch was devised and patented. It consists of a slide-valve, leg-pipe, and belly-pipe, which are held together and to the tuyere by a system of levers and links. The slide-valve is superior to the old throttle-valve. The leg-pipe is formed of two thicknesses of wrought-iron pipe, with a space of half an inch filled in with clay and brick. The belly-pipe is made in the same way as the leg-pipe, and terminates in a globe face to suit the tuyere. The quarter turn is made extra thick, of cast iron, and the cap on the end is lined with clay also. The catches, A, B, C, are merely for convenience in putting the pipe together. The joints D and E are globe faces, and allow the pipe to adjust itself to any angle. The eye-piece is made of violet glass, which cuts off the glare from the bright coals in the furnace and allows a close examination of the interior, so that any water dropping or vapor can be detected. The glass does not become coated with dirt, like mica. Since good running of furnaces is shown by a bright tuyere, it is necessary to have a good eve-piece to examine then. To detach the pipe, a man lifts the weights, the side rods are then slipped off the bell crank under the quarter turn, the link under the belly-pipe is unhooked, and the pipe carried away. The same process is reversed to put the pipe together. The nozzle is changed by taking off the cap, G, drawing the nozzle through the belly-pipe, and inserting another. In this way the change can be made quickly, without taking down the pipe. On the old tuyere pipe bolts with brass nuts were used, which burned up and gave trouble. In other cases key-bolts were used, making it difficult to adjust the pipe. Bolts make too rigid a joint, and there is no provision for movement from contraction or expansion. Conservation, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods whereby the natural inheritance of the human race may be improved; and still more broadly considered. and as used in popular discussion, it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation methods upon distribution. "Conservation means a sacrifice of the present generation to the future generations whenever it is carried too far. There is a sharp limit to the economic sacrifice that we may reasonably ask the private person to make for even the present welfare, and the limit is still sharper when we come to consider the interests of future generations." In a paper on the iron ores of America, presented to the Pan-American Scientific Congress at Washington, I have emphasized the fact that the reserves of iron ores in the two Americas are enormously in excess of the requirements of the present generation, in fact, so large that no shortage is to be anticipated for many generations in the future; that a large part of the value of iron ores is put into them by man's efforts to make them available. This fact is fundamental for the intelligent consideration of policies of conservation as applied to iron ore. As I interpret it, this fact makes it practically unnecessary that the present generation should make any especial sacrifice for future generations in the way of conservation of its iron-ore resources. Even if we were disposed to look forward to a period of 100 or 200 years, with a view to insuring the welfare of the people living at that time, it is doubtful whether any procedure we could now formulate would materially help them in the matter of iron ores, so large are the reserves available. In order that an appeal for conservation may be effective it must obviously favor the welfare of the present or immediately following generations; it must promise benefits to general and individual welfare during a period within the range of comprehension of the average man.

He was born at Montreal, Canada, in 1875. His earliest education was received in Montreal hut was continued from 1885 to 1892 at schools and academies in Brooklyn, Whitestone, and Flushing, L. I. For his technical education he returned to McGill University, where he graduated in 1897. His first professional occupation was as transitman enga.ged in the running of township lines in the Rainy River District of Ontario. In 1899, he was made assistant chemist at the Cuggenheim smelter at Aguascalientes, Mexico. From 1900 to 1903, he was chief chemist for La Compañia Minera de Peñoles, at Mapimi, Durango. We have no information as to his pursuits during the next eight years, but from 1911 until 1914, when he became a member of the Institute, he was chief engineer for the Bankhead mines in Alberta, Canada. Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Winter Evans Lieutenant-Colonel Evans, who was in command of the Third Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and had been cited in Distinguished Service Orders and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal, was killed in action on Oct. 12, 1917. Alfred Winter Evans was born in Natal, South Africa, in 1881, and received his preliminary education in the Durban High School. For the next five years he attended St. George's School at Harpenden Heights, England, until 1898. Returning to South Africa, he worked . for three months of 1898 as underground sampler for the Crown Deep Gold Mining Co., at Johannesburg, and for six months of the following year he was shift-boss for the Crown Deep, Ltd. At the outbreak of the Boer War he took an active part and was engaged on military service from 1899 to 1902. At the close of the mar, he came to New York and attended the Columbia School of Mines, where he graduated with the degree of E. M. in 1906. A part of that year he spent as assayer to a mining company at Poland, Arizona. In 1907, he returned to South Africa and engaged as underground contractor in charge of mining and development at a number of the South African mines, notably the French-Rand, the ViIIage Main Reef, the City Deep, and others. In 1908, he acted as shift-boss for the Fer-rerra Gold Mining Co. at Johannesburg. In 1909, he was appointed acting general manager for the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand,

Although the 71 Minerals operation is now closed down and the operating data presented is almost five years old, it is well worth describing since it was the first heap leaching operation conducted on a primarily silver ore. Tombstone was discovered in 1877 by Ed Schieffelen; and it became one of the most famous mining towns in the West through the stories connected with Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the Clanton brothers. Like many silver deposits .in the western United States, the Tombstone ores were relatively shallow. Several million ounces of silver were recovered in the relatively few years the camp was active; but mining virtually ceased by the early 1900s and was only continued in a small way until the 19409, a history similar to that of Tuscarora. The 71 Minerals operation was started in May 1975 and continued until late 1978 within the city limits of Tombstone on waste dumps; one was the' Lucky Cuss, Schieffelen's discovery, which had accumulated from the old underground operations. This waste material was mostly less than 50 mm (2 in.) in size, although there was some larger lumps. The grade was about 34 g Ag and 0.5 g Au per mt (1.0 oz Ag and 0.015 oz Au per st). The Tombstone dumps contained approximately 1,000,000 tons. The dumps and patented claims were held by a single owner, Tombstone Development Company, thus sufficient leaching material could be acquired from one source rather than dealing with a number of individuals, as is usual in putting together leaching ventures in old mining camps. 71 Minerals Ltd. was formed and a lease of the properties obtained. A site was selected close to the major mine dumps not far from down- town Tombstone. Pads approximately 90 m (300 ft) wide and 180 m (600 ft) long with an 8-degree slope were prepared using compacted old mill tailings as a base sealant on the pads. Mining was done at a rate of about 2,000 tons per day with a dozer, two scrapers, a front-end loader, and 30 ton trucks. The ore was dumped by the scrapers as it came from the dumps with no screening or crushing in 460 mm (18 in. ) layers and trimmed with the loader. Based on bulk sampling and laboratory testing, the majority of thegold and silver values were recovered within 30 days of leaching.

Statistical data on the Polish producing business are available only for the first half of 1939. Because of the invasion of the country during September by Germany and Russia all sources of information have stopped, and it is impossible to get even an approximate picture of the status of the industry after that date. The long declining trend of Polish production, which was finally checked during 1938, kept a further upward tendency during the first half of 1939, and there is good reason to believe that the upward trend would have been maintained. It is true, there was little hope of reviving the slowly dying Boryslaw field, although there still remained a slight possibility for an extension in its southwestern direction. Repressuring plans were still discussed, but. could not be put into effect because of extremely complicated and split-up lease ownership. The Gorlice-Lipinki ficld continued to be the main factor in the increase of the country's production. During the first half of 1939 this field received a further important extension in a southern direction. The Schodnica field continued to use repressuring with success. At the end of June, 21 exploratory wells were drilling, 14 of which were within thc Carpathians and 7 in the Miocene geosyncline of the Carpathian Foreland. All of the wildcat wells drilled within the Carpathians were on the struct,ural cxtcnsion of old established fields, but part of the wildcats of the Foreland were on new geological and geophysical prospects. The Opary gas field of the Foreland discovered last year has been further developed. The Government-owned Polmin completed its third gasser. This well penetrated two sands; the upper one, 118 ft. thick, was found at 1312 ft., with an initial pressure of 570 lb. and capable of produeiring 10 million cu. ft. per day. The second sand, 91 ft. thick, was found at 1690 ft., yielding 20 million cu. ft., with a pressure of 760 lb. The well Mieczyslaw, drilled about 3 miles further north on the flank of the structurc, found the first sand watered. The Pioneer No. 5, at Chodonice near Przemysl, which reported somc gas last year, was 5696 ft. deep at the end of June, still drilling in Miocene. Anothe well in the same vicinity drilled by the Gasolina was 1708ft. deep.

Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

Va.-I notice in the third paragraph of the first page of the paper, that in mentioning the clays of the Pottsville series, the author says: "The bed of clay found in the latter formation is unique in that flint clay is practically restricted to it. (A variety of flint clay is occasionally found in these upper deposits but this is in such small amounts as to be negligible."). If the author wishes to confine himself to the fire clays of Pennsylvania, as the title seems to indicate, I have nothing to say, but if he wishes to include a discussion on fire clays of the adjoining States which the. subsequent paragraphs of his paper seem to indicate, then I wish to call attention to the fact that there are large and extensive deposits of fire clay in the Allegheny series, immediately overlying the Pottsville in the northern counties of West Virginia. These fire clays have been studied carefully, and described in several reports of the West Virginia Geological Survey, first in the report on Ohio, Brooke, and Hancock Counties, in the northern part of the State; described later ,in the report on Monongalia, Marion, and Taylor Counties, and in the report on Preston County, which followed. In these latter counties (Monongalia, Marion, Taylor, and Preston) there are some beds of fine fire clay, varying in thickness from 6 to 10 or 12 ft., with a content of only 2 or 3 per cent. of fluxing ingredients, and these are of the typical Savage Mountain appearance and also have the typical Savage Mountain fracture. They have been prospected, but not mined a great deal. Several of them have been tested in blast furnaces and furnaces for other purposes, in glass-manufacturing plants, also for firebrick, arid have been found to be very good. They are simply awaiting development, and I merely want to call attention to the fact that there are plenty of them in the Allegheny series still above the Pottsville in West Virginia. There are two or three valuable seams which I have seen in person and have had analyzed in our laboratory.

The: volatility of a motor fuel is an index to its quality and to the satisfaction that will attend its use as an internal combustion engine fuel. Natural gasoline is concentrated volatility; threfore, it is quite natural that the most important market for natural gasoline should be for blending with less volatile refinery gasolines. Progress in the art of manufacturing natural gasoline, particularly in fractionation, which has made possible the elimination of the fixed gases and lighter hydrocarbons having a tendency to gasify at atmospheric pressure and temperature, has made it possible and desirable for refiners to utilize an ever-increasing percentage of natural gasoline in their finished product. This, in turn, has enabled the industry at large with each succeeding year to supply to the consuming public a better grade of gasoline. While cracking processes and improved fractionation in refinery operation have resulted in higher yields of gasoline per barrel of crude oil refined, natural gasoline has also played a large part in this respect because it has enabled the refiner to cut deeper into the crude and still maintain proper standards of volatility by blending natural gasoline with the product from his stills. There is, of course, with even the present improved grades of natural gasoline, a limit to the percentage that may properly be used. This percentage varies with different grades of crude oil, varies according to the facilities employed at the refinery and varies according to the grade of motor fuel manufactured; therefore it is not possible to say that for a certain predetermined amount of motor fuel to be manufactured in a given area, a certain definite amount of natural gasoline will be required. It is, however, generally conceded, and statistics bear out the statement, that the average gallon of motor fuel sold in this country contains approxi-matcly 11 per cent. of natural gasoline. Isolated cases may be found where in a very few refineries during certain seasons no natural gasoline is used, while in other plants as high as 35 per cent. and 40 per cent, natural gasoline is used in certain grades of motor fuels. IN the development of a new treatment for the prediction of deformation textures,'-' it was noted that for no metals are there experimentally determined tension textures with which the predictions may be compared. There is a considerable knowledge of drawing textures and previous workers have been content to consider these as equivalent to tension textures for the purposes of comparison. It is shown, however, in the new treatment that the tension and drawing textures are not necessarily identical, the radial compression exerted by the dies in the drawing operation producing some modification of the tension texture. In particular for the face-centered cubic metals it is predicted that for drawing the final texture should be [1ll] with a spread towards [211] (a more detailed derivation of this texture has been made by Calnan3). This has been amply confirmed by experiment, see Hibbard.6 For the pure tension case, however, the treatment predicts intermediate [1ll] and [loo] textures leading to a [211] end-point, while all previous treatments have predicted the final texture as [1ll] with in some cases an additional [loo] component. Thus evidence that the pure tension end-point is the [211], or at least that [1ll] and [l00] are not the final textures, should provide a valuable test of the new treatment. Accordingly some experiments were made on aluminum. Three aluminum specimens were examined in detail, one of cold-rolled high purity rod (99.99 pct), specimen A, and two of commercial extruded rod of purity 99.4 pct, specimens B and C. The initial annealing treatments were: A, 1½ hr at 400°C; B, 2 hr at 400°C; C, 1½ hr at 650°C. The principal difficulty is that of obtaining sufficient elongation before fracture occurs. This was overcome to some extent by giving a softening heat treatment, 1 hr at 300°C, after each 15 pct of extension. Vickers hardness measurements gave values before and after the softening treatment of about 30 and 28, respectively, in comparison with the initial value of about 19 corresponding to fully annealed material. From recent observations in this laboratory it is concluded that this small recovery corresponds to a polygonization process rather than recrystallization proper and consequently the preferred orientation is unaffected. Economic law was accorded considerably more recognition by the oil industry last year than perhaps ever before. While proration was undoubtedly given added impetus in 1931, and the list of proponents of unit operation was noticeably lengthened, predominant evidence plainly shows that the functioning of economic laws dominated collective efforts to reduce the excessive above-ground supply of petroleum. Crude oil production was reduced more than 48,000,000 bbl. last year; imports from other parts of the world were substantially lower; stocks of crude were drawn upon to the extent of nearly 48,000,000 bbl.; domestic gasoline demand increased 2 per cent—and yet, prices of petroleum and its products were at the lowest levels in many years. To say that the ills of the oil industry during 1931 were due to the general depression that was felt in all other lines is tantamount to attaching an air of uncertainty to a group of commodities that have been proved to be an ever increasing necessity, even in times of depression. TO say that the potential productivity of proven oil-producing areas has been responsible for the unsatisfactory state of affairs last year, and now, is to admit failure to carry out the principles designed to control production in accordance with the limits prescribed by demand. In fact, there is no reason why a large proven potential supply of oil should not be considered a valuable asset to the industry; an assurance against future needs; a stabilizing influence in building up confidence in the ability of the industry to supply this and future generations with fuel and lubricant requirements at reasonable prices. At any rate, an assured future supply of oil should be interpreted to the public to mean that the oil industry is a legitimate, progressive industry, and not a group of prospectors madly searching for "liquid gold." There has been a great deal of romance connected with the history of the oil business—so much that the public has come to associate the word "oil" with untold riches. However, the financial statements of 1931 will furnish conclusive proof to the contrary. Too much oil, too many refineries, too many filling stations, too much capital invested; these and other "too muches" and "too manys" have perhaps been given more publicity than necessary. Need for a standard of ualuration.—There should be an accepted method for evaluating the different kinds of bituminous coals based on their carbon just as that for iron ores is based on iron. Variation in the classes of coals and their desirability fol the different industrial uses is analagous to the case of iron ores. The iron people have developed a standard. In the past coals have not been intelligently distributed because the public has not been informed as to its uses. Many operators have known nothing about the final disposal of the coal shipped from their mines. Sales agents and retailers have had no means of evaluating coals except to make the price as high as the market will stand. Producers and distributors need to know how much more valuable the coals would be if prepared so as to contain less objectionable material. Mr. Swectser cnlletl on the Goal and Coke Committee of the Institnte to organize a study through producers and users to develop a method scientifically and comnereially sound E. A holbrook said that the information exists but the public is unwilling to investigate. He praised Ashley's1 nomenclature of the different kind of coal which has been accepted by the Coal Mining Institute of America and recommended to the American Enginecring Standards Commitee. G. S. Rice pointed out the wider variety and distribution of consumption of coal compared to Iron ore. C'. M. Young approved Mr. Sweetser's remarks and hoped lor a research institution, probably endowed, to study utilization of coal after it comes from the ground. Mr. Sweetser cited incidents to prove his former statements. He said that a reduction of 1 per cent. ash in the coal would cut down the cost of pig iron at a blast furnace 30 c. a ton, that the coal men should tell what the iron men would have to pay to get better coal. H. J. Prryn endorsed the need of blast-furnace operators to know the kind of coal from which their- coke is made and the latler's ash content, as this affects coke consumption. A. C.
