Discussion of the paper of W. N. BEST, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1527 to 1537. WILLIAM A. WILLIAMS, San Francisco, Cal.-I would like to ask whether .Mr. Best ever had any experience with an oil burner that used neither air nor steam? W. N. BEST, New York, N. Y.-Yes. This type is commonly known as the "mechanical spray burner" and uses oil heated under high pressure to above its vaporizing point. These burners are not as efficient as the atomizing type for the following reasons: 1. They produce a round flame which; as with any other type of burner, must pass over a flat surface. A round flame cannot fit a flat surface. 2. They do not evenly distribute the heat, resulting in localized heat. 3. The outlet through which the fuel passes is very small; so all gravities of oil, especially oil containing sand, cannot be burned. 4. Their construction is such that they must be cleaned frequently, as the residuum in the fuel clogs the burner. 5. The oil opening being small, the capacity of each burner is small, so that many burners must be used in a boiler or furnace. (The fewer burners there are, the more accurately they can be regulated.) In marine boilers, these burners are largely used, because they do not require either steam or air for atomization. However, there are other methods by which this objection to other types can be eliminated, such as by the use of a rotary blower and steam turbine engine, the exhaust front the engine passing into the engine condenser, thus obviating loss of water. Mechanical burners are rarely used in shops. I know of but one power plant using them. With mechanical burners, the fuel must be maintained at a high pressure. On board naval vessels, some mechanical burners demand an oil pressure of from 100 to 6001b. It is advisable to reduce the pressure as much as possible, as fractured pipes or fittings are particularly dangerous, for the heated oil escapes as a vapor. In such cases there is liability of an explosion caused by spontaneous combustion.

GEOPHYSICAL investigations based on radioactivity have been applied to the earth's crust for the purpose of discovering bodies rich in radioactive substances, or for the location of solutions with high emanation or radioactive-salt content, or for the detection of oil, which, in virtue of colloidal properties, has strong powers of radioactive absorption. RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES Radioactive substances are distributed in all rocks, waters, and gases in the earth's crust in small quantities. Granites and similar acidic rocks are richest in uranium and thorium, two chief radioactive substances; yet the quantities present in such rocks are of the order 10-12g., this concentration being expressed in grams per gram of the whole substance per cubic centimeter. In granites the uranium yields, according to Haddock, 3 X 10-12 g. of radium per gram of rock. In basalts the uranium yields 1.19 X 10-12 g. per gram per cubic centimeter. Of thorium the granites yield -2 X 10-5 g. per gram of rock; the basalts, 0.77 X 10-5 g. per gram. Certain series of alkalis of low atomic weight, like potassium and rubidium, show weak radioactivity; this property has no significance so far for geological research. The uranium is esti-mated indirectly from the electrical properties of one of its derivatives as a -gas (emanation) into which it is transformed. The thorium is expressed directly, though it is measured as a derivative, thorium emana-tion. There is a measure for the gaseous radium emanation, the curie, which is that quantity of radium emanation, or radon, which stands in equilibrium with 1 g. of radium. The concentration of the emanation is the Mache unit corresponding to 3.64 X 10-10 curie per liter. When gases become permeated by alpha, beta, and gamma rays, plus and minus ions are produced in them by the decomposition of neutral gas molecules, and under the influence of an electrical field these ions are given opposite motions. The measurement of the alpha rays and the bisection thicknesses of the beta and gamma rays is a means of analyzing unknown radioactive substances. These rays accompany the disintegration of radioactive substances and arise from "spontaneous internal changes

In a recent paper, Miyoshi, Hara, and sugimotoL have shown that hardness increases and crack resistance decreases with polishing time in tungsten car-bide-cobalt alloys. They attribute the changes in hardness and crack resistance to cold working in these alloys. More recently Exner2 explains the decrease in crack resistance with the amount of material removed (polishing time) by suggesting that polishing removes a high compressive residual surface stress due to the initial grinding operation. He cites previous work on steel to show grinding can induce surface compressive stresses but offers no direct experimental measurements to support this in cemented tungsten carbides. In recent work we have observed changes in residual stress in the W C phase as measured by X-ray diffraction techniques with changes in polishing conditions.3 As a result of the work of Miyoshi et al.,L a brief study was undertaken to investigate the effects of polishing and grinding on the residual stress in the WC phase and have been reported.4 A single composition of tungsten carbide —10 wt pct Co was used. Two initial conditions were studied: an annealed condition with about -30,000 psi residual stress from the differences in thermal coefficients of expansion of WC and cobalt and, on the same specimen, a surface ground with a 150 grit diamond wheel. Stress was measured in the WC phase using X-ray diffractometry as a function of the amount of material removed by metallographic polishing with 6 diamond paste. The results are shown in Fig. 1. Two things are noted, 1) polishing with 6 p diamond paste has little effect on the annealed sample and 2) the magnitude of the grinding stress is markedly reduced as material is removed. By the time 0.1 mil is removed the surface has a metallographic polish satisfactory for light microscopy examination. Thus the surface, even though polished, can still retain most of the stress due to grinding. Since WC is itself slightly ductile, it seems reasonable that high compressive stresses can be generated in the surface by the plastic deformation accompanying grinding. By an extension of drilling activities in 1938, the Polish oil industry succeeded not only in maintaining production but even in increasing it slightly. This increase, however, was from present oil reserves and not due to the discovery of any new fields. Most of the new wells were drilled in the Jaslo district, particularly in the Lipinki-Libuszal oil field, because of the shallow depth of the producing sands. At the Boryslaw field the 12,332 meters drilled could not compensate for the steady drop in production. A drilling campaign similar to that of the previous year in the Stanislawow district resulted in a slight decline of production. A number of the new wells have been subsidized by the Fund for the Advancement of Drilling2 in Poland. As the present sums at the disposal of this fund are insufficient for a great exploration program, they are chiefly used for the maintenance of the actual production. New wells on known folds, but more than 1000 m. outside the present productive areas, are entitled to a subsidy. Applications for wildcats outside the known productive areas have not been received in 1938. Even when the Polish oil industry was prosperous, wildcatting was not frequent and in their present impoverished condition the oil companies are no longer able to bear such financial burdens. The only way to start a large-scale drilling campaign on the still existing promising areas seems to depend on the granting of new substantial subsidies from the Treasury. Such measures are being considered by the Polish Government. It has been suggested that a fund for wildcatting might be raised by a small increase in the price of benzine. An advance of one grosz per liter of benzine would raise, on present home consumption of 108,000 kilogram-tons, about 1.3 million zloty, an advance of 5 grosze more than 6 million zloty.3 This small increase in price would hardly be felt by the motor-car owners, as it would mean an extra expense of 80 to 400 zloty in a year.

Zinc, in its wrought form, is produced commercially in rolled strip, sheet, wire, rod and tubing. Wire has been made periodically, but due to the fact that slight drafts are necessary, the cost of production is greater than for the more common non-ferrous metals which are made into wire. Notwithstanding the cost, zinc wire has certain special uses for which it is particularly adaptable. Rod has been made both by rolling and extrusion; the product, however, has not indicated great commercial value. Tubing has been made from strip from time to time by forming a strip around a mandrel and either electrically or gas-welding a longitudinal joint. Recently a tube manufacturer has succeeded in making a fair quantity of this material. Its commercial adaptability is still to be dctcrmined but anyone who desires it can obtain quantities of the smaller sizes. Inasmuch as strip and sheet are commercially the most important, this paper will be devoted to these products. In the broader sense, zinc is not alloyed. That is, there are no combinations comparable to the various copper, aluminum and nickel alloys. It has been recognized for some time that the lead and cadmium occurring with commercial zinc have some effect on its properties and such alloys as may be said to exist are those made from zincs containing varying amounts of lead and cadmium with a relatively low iron content. The foreign rolled zinc will analyze higher in lead than the domestic grades. A representative foreign analysis will run 1.1 per cent. lead, 0.07 per cent. cadmium and 0.02 per cent. iron. The American grades vary from zinc approximating high grade and analyzing 0.08 per cent, lead, 0.002 per cent. cadmium and 0.015 per cent. iron, to the lower grades in which the lead will vary from 0.3 to 1.0 per cent., cadmium from 0.10 to 0.5 per cent. and the iron in the neighborhood of 0.02 percent. THE Eastern district, composed of New Jersey and eastern Pennsyl-vania, with its native ores, was the cradle of the iron industry of the United States. The district attained and held the leadership in produc-tion of pig iron for over 100 years, from pre-Revolutionary days to approximately 1875. The first shipment of Lake hematite ore was made in 1853. It was a small shipment, transported by a sailing vessel and a canal barge, but it was the beginning of the end of the supremacy of the Eastern district, although at that time the ore was supposed to be too rich to be successfully smelted with the block coal then in use at western furnaces. The iron made from the first shipment of Lake ore was worked into nails by the Sharon Iron Co., at Sharon, Pa. The writer's great-grandfather, David Agnew, and his brother, John P., Agnew, owners and-operators of the Sharpsville furnace, Sharpsville, Pa., worked the shipment through a furnace. Because of this, the writer feels some satisfaction in having been one of a group that solved the problem of making profitable an operation using Eastern district ores exclusively. With the development of Lake mines, and the production and use of coke, the Middle West district gradually assumed the position of leader-ship in production; because, even though the ores were transported 1000 miles by water and rail, its cost figure on pig iron was better than that of the eastern producer whose furnace was next to his mine. Such a cost figure was possible because the ore was naturally rich in iron and reduced easily. It was possible to carry a heavy burden on the furnace, which resulted in large tonnage and low coke per ton of iron. This paper is in no sense a technical one. The purpose is to show that with the proper physical preparation of the Eastern magnetites they will reduce as easily as the Lake hematites, and because of the high iron concentration give the Eastern producer just as much advantage as formally he was at a disadvantage in comparison with the Middle West producer.

While engaged in experimenting with the usual methods for estimating phosphorus in iron and steel, it occurred to me that potassium chlorate might be used to oxidize the carbon, and thus avoid the tedious and vexatious evaporations necessary for successfully carrying out the usual methods. After many trials, the following plan was adopted : Take, for analysis, of Bessemer or other low-carbon steels, from 3 to 5 grammes; of crucible steel, 10 grammes; of pig-iron, 1 to 5 grammes, according to the percentage of phosphorus supposed to be present. Of iron, high in phosphorus (1 per cent.), take 1 gramme. Place in a No. 4 evaporating dish the amount of iron or steel decided upon, cover with a funnel which will just fit inside the dish, and then add gradually HNO3, (1.20 specific gravity), using 12 C.C. of acid for each gramme of steel or iron taken. (A larger quantity of acid will be required for small samples.) When the full amount of acid has been added, and the violent action has ceased, place the evaporating dish on a sand-bath, add 10 C.C. HNO3, (1.40 specific gravity), and boil till the bulk of the solution is reduced about onehalf. Then add 10 C.C. HNO3, (1.40 specific gravity), continue the boiling, and add from time to time, during the next 15 minutes, small portions of pulverized KCIO3, till about 2 grammes have been added. (If the solution shows signs of going dry, more strong acid must be added.) This will precipitate the manganese, with some iron. Sometimes it happens that the manganese does not come down readily, and more KCIO3, or further concentration, or both, will be required. The process is not complete till the manganese is precipitated, which may be known by the appearance of a dark, mirror-like deposit on the dish, at the edge of the solution. Boil the solution 5 minutes after the last addition of KCIO3, and then add cautiously (to prevent sudden explosions) 5 C.C. strong HCl. This will dissolve the precipitated manganese and iron. PRESIDENT DOWLING'S ? ADDRESS I feel that it is a great honor to be invited to reply to this toast on behalf of the Canadian Mining Institute. I wish to thank you for your very cordial reception of the toast and for the sentiments expressed in your invitation to the Institute to cooperate in a series of joint meetings. It is an earnest of the mutual regard which the peoples of the two countries have for each other. We have been allies in a very great war and the feelings of good-will engendered by that alliance will survive, I believe, through the strenuous times of peace. The other nations of the alliance had through many changes in history, fought each other and for each other and had thereby gained a clear conception of the social aims and moral character of their peoples. With this knowledge came mutual trust-the one element necessary for united action or lasting agreement. On this continent the two peoples are drawn together by bonds of a common origin and, largely, a common language. No war has been necessary to force declarations of national aims on which to base terms of amity and now our peoples who had studied the arts of peace together have together passed through fire-drawn into the conflict by a like horror at the sacrilege of the crucifixion of the rights of humanity. Their courage and manhood has been tested at Ypres and Chateau Thiery by the great assayer war, and, together, with thankful hearts we see the triumph of right over night and better than ever know that we have the same conception of the government of the people for the people. We are met to celebrate the close of the association of our brethren it the front in the fight for freedom for the world-a freedom that to us hems natural but which to the majority of the allied nations is a heritage derived from the protest made by the American colonies against German ideas of government of which remnants had until then survived in Great Britain.

Although the situation in the oil industry during the past year has not been conducive to large expenditures for development and research, there is little indication that such expenditures have been curtailed. While few outstanding achievements have been reported, considerable progress has been made in the development of new product,s and the adaptation of petroleum derivatives to new uses. The most important question facing the refiner today is the antiknock quality of his gasoline. This year has seen the widespread adoption of the term "octane number" as a measure for anti-knock values, and in the latter months of the year the public has been made acutely aware of this condition through competitive advertising. Gasoline is no longer priced on volatility and gravity alone, but on octane number as well; and premiums are being paid for material of relatively high octane rating. The situation has grown more and more competitive and has forced refiners continually to raise the octane rating of their regular and competitive grades, and at this writing the same situation exists for premium grades which have possessed relatively high anti-knock properties for some time. Straight-run gasoline produced from paraffin-base or semiparaffin-base crudes has an inherently low anti-knock value, and in order to convert this material to a higher quality it has been found necessary to crack an increasing percentage of the crude oil charge. By completely cracking the heavier portions of the crude and blending back with the straight-run gasoline, it has been possible to produce an average of 63 to 65 octane number gasoline on average Mid-Continent crude. This operation carried to the fullest extent does not suffice, however, and the recent and rapid development of the so-called '(reforming unit," has resulted. The straight-run gasoline fraction is cut into two parts: a light, low boiling point gasoline; and a heavy gasoline or naphtha. The latter containing the low anti-knock portions of the gasoline, is sent through a re-forming unit and subjected either to high temperature or pressure, or both, which materially increases its octane number. THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Teguci-galpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced.

Production of oil by expansion from a cylindrical reservoir composed of two concentric regions of different properties has been determined as a function of time for a reservoir producing at constant terminal pressure. The parameters involved are permeability, porosity, compressibility and oil viscosity. Results agree with those of a generally accepted method for uniform reservoirs when all parameters are taken as uniform. Cumulative production at any given time is reduced below that of the uniform reservoir when a region of considerably lower permeability adjoins the well; cumulative production increases when a high-permeability region adjoins the well. Curves are presented illustrating quantitative effects of these variations. INTRODUCTION Most petroleum reservoirs can be exploited by release of pressure and consequent expansion of underground fluid. During part of the production history of certain reservoirs by this mechanism, fluid compressibility can be considered small and constant. Cumulative fluid produced by this means as a function of time was calculated for a uniform reservoir by van Everdingen and Hurst.l For certain cases where a production well has been damaged or where an acid treatment has been used, a zone of properties different from those of the reservoir may be created around the production well. In such a case, expansion of the reservoir fluid takes place in a system composed of two concentric cylindrica1 regions of different reservoir properties. Such composite systems were studied in connection with heat flow by Jaeger2 who presented a solution for temperature distribution in a radial system with an infinitely large outer radius. Similar heat flow problems have been studied by other authors Oil production from composite reservoirs was studied for constant production rate by Hurst,4 Loucks and Guerrero,5 and Carter.6 THEORY This work considers constant terminal pressure. Cumulative flow is calculated for a composite bounded system in which no flow takes place across the outer boundary (Fig. 1). Since the flow is considered to be purely radial, the problem involves only one space dimension and time. It is convenient to define the following dimen-sionless pressure drops (Fig. 1).

I DESIRE to communicate to the Institute the results of a few analyses which bear on the condition of carbon in gray and white iron. These analyses were made in the course of an investigation, now in progress, of the chemical composition of "chilling" irons. It will be remembered that Bell says he found no material difference in the amount and condition of carbon in gray and white pig iron made at the Clarence furnace, in England, and he therefore refers the difference in color and appearance in these two varieties of iron to the size of the particles of graphite. I quote from his "Chemical Phenomena of Iron Smelting:" "The inference I would draw from the information afforded by these analyses is, that the condition of iron in respect to its so-called 'richness' is, within certain limits, entirely independent of its chemical constitution.. .. In the fluid state, I conceive the carbon, so taken up, confers upon the iron the property of fusion much below the temperature at which the pure metal melts, and the carbon itself may be regarded as dissolved in the iron. If, during the process of manufacture, the pig metal has been formed at a low temperature, consolidation, I imagine, takes place under such circumstances that the crystals are so minute, and the carbon which is separated assumes the uncombined or graphitic form in particles so minute as to be invisible, and, in consequence, the iron is white. If, on the other hand, the furnace is working at a very high temperature, the intensely heated iron crystallizes with large facets, upon which the extruded carbon assumes the condition of distinct plates or flakes. Should the temperature be less intense, these crystals are of smaller dimensions, and the separated carbon is less conspicuous, and, as the temperature of the furnace declines, the crystals decrease in size, as do the flakes of carbon, until both disappear in white iron.. .. Returning, then, to temperature as the cause of differences in quality of pig iron, the 'chilling' of gray metal, and its conversion into white, may be regarded as the effect of preventing, by rapid cooling, the formation

ZAY JEFFRIES (communication to the Secretary*).-Having seen Mr. Ruder's micrographs of electrolytic iron, I am of the opinion that the tentative explanation offered verbally is correct. Mr. Ruder has informed me that both of the samples were cooled in the furnace. The structures as shown in Figs. Band C resulted from the last cooling through the temperature range near 900° C. Assuming that the rate of cooling through this range was the same in both cases, the differences in struc-ture of the gamma iron in the two samples must have ]:)]-ought about, in some way, the variations in grain size and grain shape shown in Mr. Ruder's micrographs. Even though there is practically no temperature gradient in muffle-furnace treatment during the "soaking" period, during both heating and cooling, there is a temperature gradient. Fig. B should normally have been fine-grained prior to the last cooling, due to the comparatively low maximum temperature to which it was heated (1,000° C.). On cooling through the allotropic change point at 900°, these small gamma grains, iii conjunction with the temperature gradient, should form an ideal condition for germination. Germinant grains should form near the surface of the sample (the-colder portions) and the small gamma grains would be progressively absorbed as they changed into non-gamma iron. The elongated grains in Fig. B, converging toward the axis of the piece of iron, indicate that germinant grains first formed near tine surface and advanced their boundaries toward the interior of the sample. The gamma grains in Fig. C, however, should have been large, prior to the last cooling, due to time high temperature treatment (1,250 to 1,300° C.). In other words, to use one of Prof. Howe's expressions, the crystalline organization should be very complete and the change from gamma to non-gamma iron on cooling would take place reluctantly. This resistance to change from gamma to non-gamma iron would probably be greater in the interior of the large grains than at their boundaries. Non-gamma iron centers or nuclei would probably form at a great many places, at the grain boundaries, thus masking the influence, to a large

THE MIDLANDS of England contain large areas of important oil lands, which, however, will not become of commercial importance for at least 5 years, because the ownership of the oil has become a political issue. In Great Britain, except in certain special areas, all minerals, except for gold and silver, belong to the surface owner. The leasing of minerals on the large estates is a very complicated business, as the family solicitors have many forms and formalities that must be observed. In the case of one of the large estates, the principal revenues of which for several hundred years have been from coal leases, the average time between the agreement on terms for a coal lease and the signing of the same has been 8 years. In 1916, one coal lease on this estate had been pending for 15 years, and was still unsigned, although the important terms had been agreed upon 15 years previously. Under war conditions, and considering the extreme importance that the production of petroleum in England would have had, such delays could not be tolerated. Most of the British landlords, relying on the almost, universal opinion of their own countrymen that there were no commercial deposits of petroleum in Great Britain, were prepared to give all their oil rights to the government, but they feared that such action might establish a precedent with respect to coal. For years the Labor Party and extreme radicals have protested against the payment of royalties to landlords on coal. The government, therefore, introduced a bill taking over all the oil rights and providing for the payment of a small royalty to the landlords, to safeguard the principle of compensation in case the coal mines should ever be nationalized. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1935 approximated 20,000 bbl., an increase of about 5000 bbl. over 1934. The total production for the state is an estimate, since the only definite figures available are those for Scott and Morgan counties, where 12,377 bbl. were marketed during 1935, an increase of 4305 bbl. over the preceding year. The oil fields of Scott and Morgan counties are near the eastern margin of the Cumberland Plateau where Pennsylvanian sediments rest uncon-formably upon the Mississippian. Near Glenmary, in Scott County, the production is from the middle Mississippian, probably near the top of the St. Louis limestone. Accumulation is due to a low, east-west anticline which has been cut by a fault. This field is now 20 years old and only a few wells are pumped at present. Oil was Struck along Boone Camp Creek in Morgan County in 1924 and there has been small production since that time. The oil comes from the middle of the Fort Payne formation of lower Mississippian age at a depth of 1400 ft. Geologic work in the area has shown that a terrace and porosity conditions in the Fort Payne formation account for the accumulation. The production figures on a number of small producing wells in Clay and Overton counties are not available. As pointed out by Glenn1, the installation of small local skimming or topping plants in the fields has curtailed the shipment of crude oil out of the state and as a result it has been impossible to secure accurate production figures in these counties. The operators, in most cases, are reluctant to give information, and there is no state law requiring them to do so. Based upon information available to the writers, it is believed that between 7000 and 8000 bbl. is a fair estimate of the production in Clay and Overton counties during 1935. More than 500 wells have been drilled in Clay County, the majority of which were drilled east of Cumberland River. JUDGE Samuel E. Schull, in the Court of Quarter Sessions of Monroe County, Pa., handed down a decision on July 2, declaring the Pennsylvania law for the Licensing of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors to be in violation of the Constitution of the State of Pennsylvania and also of the 14th amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The case was that of George E. Stevenson, who was arrested in June, 1922, charged with the practice of the profession of land surveying without first obtaining a state license. Mr. Stevenson had had forty years of practical experience as an engineer and land surveyor, and as set forth in the findings "had attained unusual skill, distinction and reputation in his said profession, and, on said date and for a considerable period thereto-fore and down to the present time, was and is President of the Engineer's Society of Northern Pennsylvania." That part of the decision referring to the unconsti-tutionality of the act is quoted in full as follows: This matter now comes on to be heard on argument as to the constitutionality of the said Act of May 25, 1921, P. I. 1131. The defendant urges that the same is unconstitutional: First: Because it is in violation of Article 3, Section 3, of the Constitution of Pennsylvania, which provides: "No bill, except general appropriations bills, shall be passed containing more than one subject which shall be clearly expressed in its title." Second: That the same is discriminatory and, therefore, in violation of the 14th Amendment of the Federal Constitution. In this case, we: are confronted by the Act of Assembly bearing the title "an act to regulate the practice of profession of Engi-neering and Land Surveying; creating a State Board for Regis-tration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors; defining its powers and duties, imposing certain duties upon the Common-wealth and Political subdivisions thereof, in connection with public work and providing penalties." We meet in the title of this act, a recognition of the fact that it is the legislative intent to deal with two professions: First: Engineering. Second: Land Surveying.

This brief resume of events, transpiring in Mexico, culled from the daily New York newspapers, since the last Bulletin went to press, does not indicate any degree of improvement in the situation. MEXICAN MINISTER TO FRANCE RECOGNIZED A dispatch from Paris quotes Alberto J. Pani, Mexican Minister to France, as saying lie lead received notification that lie might present his credentials at the French Foreign Office on May 13. This notice came at the moment the Mexican press was announcing his departure for Spain because of inability to present his credentials. MORE REVOLUTIONARY TROUBLES SOUTH AND NORTH Revolutionary outbreaks hulked large in advices from Mexico City at the end of May, says the New York Tribune. General Eznesto Danny, a major, four other officers and forty men, composing a train guard on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railroad, were killed recently in an attack by rebels under Felix Diaz's command. The troubles in the south, coupled with the fact that Villa's activities in the north have necessitated sending troops to campaign against him, have reacted in the capital seriously, it is reported. Military guards hi Mexico City have been doubled and machine guns have been placed on the roofs of the National Palace and the Cathedral. STRIKE AND MARTIAL LAW IN MEXICO CITY Advices from Mexico City, according to the Evening Sun, said that virtually every school teacher in the city was out on strike and that recurrent rioting was being put clown by armed trucks manned by Federal soldiers. The strike of the school teachers was clue to the fact that they had not been paid for months, but the direct incitement is said to have been the contrast between their impoverished position and that of Carranza's generals, who are described as rolling in wealth, and who flaunted their opulence on the streets of Mexico, riding about in high powered automobiles with women bedecked with diamonds and other jewelry. The city is said to be virtually under martial law with no immediate prospect. of a subsidence of the bitter feeling against the military caste.

THE thermal expansion of pure beryllium was first investigated by Hidnert and Sweeneyl in 1925 on a single cast specimen stated to be of 98.9 pct purity. A study of the coefficients of expansion by X-ray methods has recently been made by P. Gordon' on powder obtained from the Brush Beryllium Co. assaying 97 wt pct beryllium with about 2 wt pct oxygen as an impurity. The present work pertains to about the highest purity metal obtainable from the Brush Beryllium Co. This metal was in the form of lumps which were remelted and cast in a high-vacuum induction furnace. Expansion data in this paper deal with beryllium extruded into bars of rectangular cross-section 4x1/2 in. and the anisotropic expansivity of a large cast single crystal. Analysis of the cast metal after extrusion indicated a beryllium assay of 99.28 pct. Impurities were 0.170 pct Fe, 0.140 pct Al, 0.014 pct Mg, 0.086 pct Si, 0.020 pct Cu, 0.020 pct Mn, 0.007 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Ca, 0.080 pct C, 0.179 pct 0, (as BeO). Part I—Extruded Metal Thermal expansion measurements were obtained with a fused quartz-tube differential type dilatom-eter3 on specimens cut from the extruded sections in longitudinal and transverse directions. Specimens were machined to a diameter of 0.250 in. and a length of 3.000 in. One sample from each direction was vacuum annealed for 1 hr at 800°C. The dilatometer tube was placed in a vertical tube furnace having a uniform temperature zone which was twice the length of the sample. Average time for a complete thermal cycle to 500°C was 18 hr. Temperatures were observed with two chromel-alumel thermocouples attached to the sample about 1 M in. apart. The accuracy of temperature measure-ment was ± 0.25°C. An argon gas atmosphere sur-rounded the specimen to prevent oxidation of the beryllium. Samples were identified as shown in table I. The Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. Production oF Two Concentrates The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead con- centrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February 1941, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾-in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. 18 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner.
