When an excavation is made underground the original rock stresses are removed from the surfaces of the excavation. These surfaces converge to partially close the excavation and the superincumbent rock mass moves down towards the excavation. If the convergence of the surfaces of the excavation were controlled, energy generated by their motion against the controlling forces could be extracted. Since the total forces in the rock mass are not significantly affected by the excavation, stress concentrations arise around the excavation, which compensate exactly for those stresses no longer transmitted through the excavation. These phenomena give rise to two general principles which provide the basis for analyzing the effects of making any underground excavation. The first of these is that the total force resulting from the stresses across any plane in the rock, including any plane through the excavation, must be the same before and after the excavation is made. The second of these is that energy must necessarily be released as a result of making an underground excavation. It is instructive to consider the implications of these two principles for two extreme cases of material behavior between which the actual behavior of rock must lie, namely, the behavior of a fluid and the behavior of an elastic solid. For the purpose of analysis in this paper, an underground excavation is defined as an excavation in which the smaller horizontal dimension of any open void at a particular horizon is less than the depth of that horizon below surface. In the case of a fluid, any unsupported excavation would fill immediately, as a fluid cannot sustain shear stresses. For the same reason, stress concentrations could not arise and the forces across any plane would necessarily be the same before and after excavation. Information obtained from subsurface pressure and ,temperature measurements in oil wells now is recognized as invaluable to geologists, engineers, and operators of oil properties. Available only during the past few years, data resulting from subsurface-pressure surveys in oil wells already have found widespread application in the estimation of reserves and in the planning of comprehensive oil-field development programs. Subsurface pressure and temperature data, together with measurements of fluid volumes produced by individual wells and specific gravities of the fluids, also are included in the fundamental information essential in studying the movement of oil, gas and water through reservoir sands to wells. Heretofore, laboratory findings were relied upon almost entirely for information pertaining to the mechanics of flow of fluids through porous media, because there was no way to check laboratory results with actual performance in underground formations until subsurface pressure and temperature instruments were developed. Laboratory and field experiments now lend themselves to closer correlation—a fact that will accelerate the interpretation of many phenomena that occur when oil and gas flow through reservoir rocks, thousands of feet below the surface of the earth. This paper summarizes the results obtained thus far in a Bureau of Mines study of certain data pertaining to subsurface pressures and production of wells producing oil and gas (and water). For wells that have been studied, flowing naturally under volumetric or hydraulic control, a simple relation has been found between the mass rate of fluid (oil, gas and water) production and the corresponding drop in pressure in the reservoir sand. The equated relation embodies a productivity factor or "index" expressed in terms of mass rate of fluid production per pound drop in pressure through the sands. The equation as developed is an expression of the ability of a well to produce, which permits comparison on a uniform basis of the productivities of different wells. Results of a primary stress measurement investigation conducted on the 1100 copper ore body of the Mt. Isa mine, Mt. Isa, Queens., Australia, are presented in this chapter. The investigation started in September 1965, after discussion with the engineering staff at Mt. Isa, and consisted of both underground or in-situ tests at Mt. Isa and laboratory tests on Mt. Isa rocks and stress measurement techniques at the Australian National University in Canberra. Underground stress measurements were made in and adjacent to the 1100 copper ore body. The primary stress measurement site was in J 32 west crosscut on 14 Level. Approximate coordinates on the mine grid are 3000 north, 1650 east. The vertical depth below ground surface at this point is approximately 2180 ft. Some preliminary measurements were made in M 30 west crosscut on 13 Level, coordinates 3000 north, 2000 east, depth beneath the surface approximately 1990 ft. Additional flatjacks were installed on 11 Level in L 30 west crosscut, coordinates 3000 north, 2200 east, and depth beneath the surface approximately 1580 ft. All of the sites were in rock that from a mining engineering viewpoint must be considered extremely sound. The 13 and 14 Level crosscuts were approximately 14 ft on a side and nearly square and the 11 Level crosscut was approximately 10 ft on a side. All of the crosscuts had been standing open for several years and no artificial support of any type was necessary. Extraction openings hundreds of feet on a side have been made in this mine in similar rock and these have remained open also without additional support (see Davies 1 for a recent summary of mining techniques and conditions). In the death of Sir William Siemens, the Institute loses its most distinguished honorary member, one who, without exaggeration, may be ranked among the greatest Men of the century. In justification of this claim, I quote in part the words of two other men eminent in the walks of science. Professor Huxley, addressing the Royal Society, spoke of Siemens as "a marked example of vast energy, large scientific acquirements, and intellectual power of a high order," and as one " who had no superior in fertility and ingenuity of invention, while hardly any living man so thoroughly combined an extensive knowledge of scientific principles with the power of applying then] in a commercially successful manner. The value of his numerous inventions must be measured, not merely by the extent to which they have increased the wealth and convenience of mankind, but by the favorable reaction on the progress of pure science which they, like all such inventions, have exerted, and will continually exert." Dr. Wedding, in his address before the Verein zur Befarderung des Gewerbefleisses in Preussm, speaks of Siemens as being "so fortunate as to combine German erudition with British activity in such a manner that both nations, Gertnan as well as English, were equally proud of him; and, now that his rich life is ended, regret is expressed on both shores of the North Sea, first by the Germans that his entire life had not been spent in Germany, and his powers dedicated to Germany, and by the English that he was not born a Briton." Germany may well be proud of being the birth-place, not only of such a man, but of such a family; for where in history shall we find in a single family such a wide range of knowledge so successfully applied to the arts? The least distinguished name in the following list has added to the world's knowledge enough to satisfy the desire for fame of any ordinary man. This constellation is made up of:

The early records of coal in Kentucky by Walker and Gist have already been mentioned. Thomas Hutchins was aware of it in 1778, or perhaps several years earlier, as in writing of the Buffaloe, now Green, River, he said, "several persons who have ascended this River, say, that Salt Springs, Coal, Lime and Free Stone etc. are to be found in a variety of places."1 The next record found is an entry to Ellis and Marshall, of 878 acres on Coal Bank Creek, in the, then Fayette County on July 14, 1784.2 The settlement might have been made, or the name given, some time before. Hermeline, in 1783, mentioned iron ore and coal on the Green River,' although he had not been west of the Susquehanna River; his knowledge of coal might have come from Hutchins, although the latter made no mention of iron in that locality. In November 1790, coal was mined on Sturgeon's Creek in Lee County and floated in three barges down the Kentucky River to Cleveland's Ferry, where it was hauled to Lexington. The results were not equal to the expectations, and it was 1793 before the experiment was. repeated 4 In 1791, the estate of Samuel Wharton advertised for sale 31,000 acres "in the county of Jefferson, on the North Side of the Green or Buffaloe river, in the State of Virginia."5 In November 1795 three patents were issued for land in the then Lee County, aggregating 130,000 acres. These patents cover much of Harlan County. The descriptions of these surveys mention passing stone coal. on Rough Branch of Martin's Fork, a "great deal of stone coal" on Blacksnake Branch of Pucketts Creek, and "a quantity of stone coal" probably on Crummies Creek.6 Jedediah Morse, in The American Gazetteer, 1798, said that in Kentucky "in many places there are appearances of potter's clay, and coal in abundance." WHEN I had the honor of receiving an invitation to give the-Institute of Metals Lecture, it occurred to me that it might be of interest to review the advances which have been made in refractories, considering how important these materials of construction are in the carrying out of many metallurgical operations and what a large factor they represent in our costs of production. Frankly, I can claim no recent contact with the refractories industry and what little work I myself have been concerned with has been rather unorthodox in character. However, perhaps in consequence of this, I can approach the review without bias and include some suggestions which may prove stimulating or provocative to some of you, who have a more intimate knowledge of refractories and their uses than I Possess. It is neither possible nor necessary for me to survey the progress of industrial refractories, for this has been so thoroughly undertaken by others1-7 in recent publications. Perhaps the best way to get a broad picture of this progress is to compare the Faraday Society Symposium on Refractory Materials 20 years ago8, containing a report on one of the first attempts at standardized testing, with the American Society for Testing Materials Committee Report of February 1935. Suffice it to say, lest my provocative remarks be misunderstood, that I do appreciate that great advances have been made, particularly by companies that have established their own research laboratories and by universities and cooperative research institutes working for the common weal of groups of manufacturers or for national and international progress. The scientific study of the constitution diagrams of binary and ternary refractory oxides, which American workers have been foremost in under-taking, ? led by the work of the Geophysical Laboratory at Washington, has laid a firm foundation for the whole subject. It should be remem-bered, however, that to a much greater degree than with the constitution of metal alloys, the equilibrium conditions are so sluggishly arrived at

A successful surface coal operation requires the combined efforts of engineering and operating personnel. In the planning for a mine, machines should be selected to do the best work in getting the coal uncovered, loaded, and transported to the preparation plant. The best system and extent of cleaning will be determined by the market. After the fundamentals of operation have been established, the operating personnel should see they are carried out. There is no simple solution to some of the every day problems facing the operating officials. Here the production engineer with the technical approach, time studies, control methods, past experience, and available records can help in detecting causes of inefficient phases of the operations. With these studies, a careful analysis can be made in setting up the expected standards to be followed. Management can then compare the job under study with the standards and make corrections to solve the problems. 5.2-1. Annual or Daily Coal Production. Once the production cycle has been established, it is paramount that coal sales keep the productivity of the mine as high as possible. A successful company does this by what they call "the control approach." The daily tonnage report is one of the things that is a potent control tool in attaining the goals to be achieved. If production is falling short of the goal, the daily tonnage report will reveal what has to be done in the remaining days of the month or year to achieve the expected schedule. When goals are reached or exceeded, then budgeted tonnages and costs will be reached or exceeded and thus assure attainment of a profit. Failing to keep to the scheduled pace shows up quickly and prominently, facilitating any necessary action to get things back to the projected plans. The first mention of the mining and use of coal in the Pittsburgh district refers to the mine under Duquesne Heights that furnished coal for the garrison at the fort at Pittsburgh in 1760. Coal had been dug and used as fuel just outside of Brownsville, Fayette county, in 1759, but this was not a regular mine as the opening was in an outcropping. Maps of Ohio in 1770 showed "Cole Mines" at various points. The Penns purchased all the coal south of Kittanning in southwestern Pennsylvania from the Chiefs of the Six Nations for a reported price of $10,000. During the Revolution, coal from Herron Hill, Mincrsville, and Coal Hill, all within the present city limits, was used in Pittsburgh. There is today one custom pit opened in Coal Hill (Duquesne Heights). The first steam engine was set up in Pittsburgh in 1794 and used coal as fuel. The first mine in the Youghiogheny gas district was opened in 1796. In 1803, the first shipment of coal by water was made from Pittsburgh down the Ohio river and landed at Philadelphia, where it sold for approximately $9.50 per ton. The mines along the Monongahela were naturally the first to be opened. With the completion of locks and dams in 1844, permitting slack-water navigation, the industry began to thrive. The No. 8 field of Ohio and the Fairmont region of northern West Virginia were opened in the period 1840 to 1855. From that time on there has been a continuous development of the coal rcsources of this district, until at present productive capacity is enough to supply 30 per cent. of the country's needs of bituminous coal. The original method of working the Pittsburgh seam was to drive under cover at some easily accessible point on the outcrop with a single entry, usually 1½ yd. wide. Since 1950, several papers have been published which have described various methods for studying mobility ratio effects. The methods which have been described for studying mobility ratio effects include X-ray shadowgraph techniques, stepwise potentiometric model procedures, stepwise numerical procedures, gelatin model studies and fluid mapper model studies. The purpose of this paper is to describe a procedure for using a resistance network for studying mobility effects. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The basic unit of the experimental model consisted of a network of 840 resistors fastened to a sheet of black Lucite which was mounted on a wooden frame, Fig. 1. The dimensions of the Lucite sheet were 36 X 36 in. The resistors were fastened to the Lucite sheet at mesh points by means of snaps. The mesh points were arranged in a square pattern, 30 X 30 in., spaced at intervals of l1/2 in. The snap fasteners permitted several resistors to be "stacked" in parallel. By adding additional resistors to the basic unit, the specific resistance on each side of the flood front could be varied. The square network of resistors represented one of four symmetrical elements of a five-spot well pattern. The current input was analogous to an injection well and the current output was analogous to a production well." The power supply was essentially a full wave transformer-rectifier system for converting alternating-current into direct-current. The DC voltage could be varied from 41.43 to 290 v in steps of 41.43 v by selecting the proper outlet jacks. The major components of the power supply were: a Triro power transformer, R 11-A; a dual 5Y3 vacuum tube; two gas filled OD-3 tubes; and a Triplett voltmeter, model 227-1, range 0 to 500 DC v. Mr. BIRKINBINE's description of the bad working and sudden chilling of the Warwick Furnace last summer, seems to me quite phenomenal in blast-furnace practice. During my connection with the management of blast furnaces for many years, in the anthracite, cake, and raw-bituminous coal districts, such a me has never come under my notice. It seems to me that the scaffold in the zone of fusion could not have established itself (so that the whole power of the engines, with a blast pressure ranging from 12 to 18 pounds per square inch, could not penetrate), unless the furnace was previously badly scaffolded and bridged in some of its upper sections, from 15 to 30 feet above the hearth level, either in the zone of chemical action or the beginning of the zone of fusion. Such a 'barrier to the upward gaseous currents would cause a suspension of combustion which may have superinduced the scaffold that is assumed to have existed in the zone of fusion. It is difficult to conceive that an agglomerated mass almost across the section of the lower bosh should have formed all at once, if the furnace was free and porous for the reaction of the gaseous currents, above. Therefore, I think, the Warwick furnace was by no means in as free, open, and fine internal condition at the time the trouble commenced as the description of its regular working would lead us to suppose. I do not question the accuracy of the statements relative to the output of iron, etc I merely claim that the phenomenta, as described, could not have been almost instantaneously developed, unless there had been an incipient scaffold and lodgment above the zone of fusion. I would state my hypothesis to be that the stock lodged or collected in some of its upper sections during fie process of blowing-in, on which, as a basis, more or less accumulations may .have lodged, and thus, indirectly, caused the formation of the suc-

INVESTIGATION of the various rare earth-cadmium binary systems discloses the existence of a compound corresponding to the composition MCd6 in all systems save the La-Cd system. Lattice constants for all of the MCde compounds, except LaCd6 which apparently does not form, and PmCd6 whose synthesis was not attempted, are also recorded herein. Iandelli and Ferro 1 report the existence of the compound CeCd6. No additional information, structural details, and so forth are given. Elliott and Lemons2,3' have measured the vapor pressure of cadmium over CeCd6 and have calculated the activity of cadmium in solid CeCd6. These authors find that CeCd6 exists over a composition range from 5.967 to 6.098 (Cd:Ce ratio) at 584oC, and from 5.971 to 6.118 at 639°C. The following is an excerpt from the paper by Elliott and Lemons: 2 "Recently Mr. F. H. Ellinger of this laboratory has indexed an X-ray diffraction powder pattern of CeCd6.00 which we had prepared by gas phase reaction. The compound has a primitive cubic unit cell with a = 15.783 + 0.001A Based on the volume of the cubes surrounding an elemental cerium or an elemental cadmium atom, Mr. Ellinger finds room for 24.10 CeCd6 formula units in the CeCd6 unit cell; similar calculations based on CeCd2 and CeCd11 yield 24.18 formula units per unit cell. The presence of 24 CeCd6 units per unit cell seems probable with an X-ray density of 8.255 grams per cubic centimeter. The most one can say about in-terstitial~ is that there appears to be room in the crystal even at room temperature." It is now well known that troublesome intercrystalline corrosion may occur in austenitic stainless steels following exposure of the metal to a temperature within the range 1000° to 1500° F. (540° to 815° C.). The present paper describes a satisfactory method of estimating the extent of such corrosion, based on the measurement of the electrical resistance of a specimen before and after attack. This new method enabled us to study quantitatively the effect of several factors upon intergranular corrosion in the 18 Cr, 8 Ni type of alloy. The results show that susceptibility to this attack increases with increasing carbon content and grain size and appears to pass through a maximum for certain combinations of temperature of sensitization and period during which the alloy was maintained at that temperature; and are in complete accord with our interpretation of the mechanism of this phenomenon. The method is probably applicable to other metals or alloys subject to intercrystalline attack, such as the aluminum alloys of the duralumin type. The methods hitherto in use for estimating the degree of intergranular attack fall into three types: (1) microscopic examinationll (2) macroscopic examination of fractures, and (3) determination of the time required for complete failure or disintegration.2 None of these lends itself very well to a measurement of the extent of corrosion. The first two are qualitative in nature and the third provides an arbitrary value largely dependent on individual judgment, since failure is a progressive phenomenon and not a sudden event. Our experience is that weight-loss determinations, although valuable in some types of corrosion investigations, bear no simple relation to intercrystalline corrosion in this type of alloy, as is to be expected since the phenomenon probably involves only the thinnest films between adjacent metallic grains. ROLE OF GASES IN FERROUS -METALLURGICAL PROCESSES IN every process for making steel there are one or more stages where the metal is exposed to gas of one kind or another. Thus, in the open-hearth furnace, the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the ferrous and manganous oxides in the slag, tending to convert these to higher oxides; the higher oxides then oxidize the steel, so that indirectly the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the steel. In the Bessemer process, there is direct contact of air and steel; also, the water vapor in the air blown into the converter is continually decomposed by the molten steel, yielding hydrogen and ferrous oxide, both of which are in part taken up by the metal. In the electric-furnace processes, there is always more or less air in contact with the slag covering the metal, and this air and the gaseous reaction products from it are dissolved in the slag to some extent and thus transmitted in part to the steel. In the crucible processes, there is always entrapped air in the charges and the crucibles are more or less permeable to the gaseous products of combustion from the furnace. In all the processes of manufacture, the molten metal is exposed to air while tapping into ladles and ingot molds and has an opportunity to saturate itself with air or with gaseous or solid products generated by chemical reactions between air and steel. Sieverts1 has shown that molten metals require but a few seconds to saturate themselves with a surrounding gas. No one familiar with the operations at a steel plant needs to be reminded of the important role that gases play at all stages. Since the end of World War II the Soviet Union has made great strides toward economic development of the country. Today it is firmly established as the world's second largest industrial power after the United States and it has committed itself before the people on both sides of the Iron Curtain to catch up with and to overtake us within a few decades. No nation could achieve such a degree of industrialization or aspire to become the world's industrial leader without a large supply of many basic mineral raw materials or at least easy access to such resources. In addition, it requires technical competence, a large skilled labor force, and a high rate of capital investment. Why should we concern ourselves with these Soviet aspirations? The Free World's yardstick of measuring a nation's well-being is the standard of living of the people in that country. Presumably even Communist governments are committed to some, however gradual, improvement in the standard of living of their people. The population of the USSR is 20 pct greater than that of the United States. Hence, if they ever achieve a standard of living equal to ours, they must by all logic reach a greater overall industrial output. However, in the U.S.S.R. the standard of living of the masses has not kept pace with the expanding industrial production and is still far behind that of the United States. Our concern, therefore, is with what the USSR intends to accomplish with its expanding industrial power: Will they produce large mineral raw-material surpluses and manufacture products to compete with us for world markets and attempt to put us out of business if not use it directly to wage war; or will they use their resources merely to produce more consumer goods for the Soviet people; or will they, along with other Communist nations in the not-too-distant future, compete with us for the world's sources of mineral raw-materials to maintain a high level of mass consumption?

THERE exists in., the territory embraced between the summit of the Sierra Nevada and the coast a great dike and vein system that appears never to have been recognized in its entirety, nad many facts concerning it have never been published. This is important, not only in affording numerous clues bearing on the origin, nature, and age of the mercury deposits, and eliminating many controverted questions, but it. incidentally affords numerous facts bearing on the genesis of gold, copper, chromite, magnesite, dolomite, a type of calcite deposit, and numerous associated minerals. The mineral springs of the State almost without exception emanate from these dikes. A great range of the hydrocarbons also exists throughout the entire system of these dikes. Seepages from their, walls have frequently been mistaken as emanating from the inclosing sandstone and shale, resulting in heavy expenditures in the futile development of these Cretaceous beds, which contain no petroleum within the territory. The theory of mountain making by lateral or tangential pressure is inconsistent with some of the following recorded facts. The limitations of this paper do not admit of a description of each of the hundred or more mercury deposits embraced in the area, and therefore only typical examples will be described. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, is not submitted as complete, or as entirely accurate, but it is as nearly so as the notes at hand will admit. The field is too extensive to be completely covered by a single individual. The heavy continuous lines represent sections actually surveyed! The sections and extensions- in. dotted line are assumed, and are either unsurveyed, or -buried under younger beds. There are numerous branches connecting the great parallels that the small-scale map does not admit of plotting, even if the survey had been complete. Likewise, the conclusions in some instances may be faulty, but it is to be hoped that as a whole they may serve as a foundation on which a more complete structure may be built in the future.

In a previous paper,' the results of some experimental work on the measurement of slippage in the flow of oil and gas mixtures through vertical pipes were presented. The data obtained were correlated and equations were deduced from which the performance of the experimental gas-lift could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. However, attempts to apply the equations to the calculation of pressure drops in actual flowing wells yielded erroneous results. At the time the results of the experimental work were published, no satisfactory explanation could be offered for the failure of the empirical equations to express properly the performance of wells. However, recent work has led to the development of a new hypothesis which presupposes certain conditions affecting the flow of oil and gas in wells. When the proposed equations are corrected to allow for these conditions, an agreement between the observed and calculated performance of the actual wells is obtained which in most cases is quite satisfactory, although it is subject to certain limitations. In this paper, the method of calculating the pressure drop in actual wells is considered, and the application of the method to the design of tubing is discussed. (For nomenclature used in this discussion, see Table 1.) Factors Affecting Slippage and Efficiency At the outset, a few of the principle factors affecting slippage and efficiency in the gas-lift discussed in the previous paper will be reviewed. In the flow of the mixture of oil and gas in a vertical pipe, slippage is the phenomenon of gas moving upward with a. linear velocity greater than that of the oil. Under steady conditions, if given quantities of oil and gas enter the tubing per unit of time, the same quantities of oil and gas per unit time must, on the average, pass every section of the tubing; otherwise, there would be accumulation or depletion of the oil or gas at some sections, and the flow would be unsteady. W. Thompson of the Bureau of Mines and entitled "Petroleum Laws of All America." We shall not discuss the European colonies in Latin-America nor the island republics. As to the countries discussed, we shall attempt to give the main features of such special petroleum legislation as has been adopted prior to the early part of this year; where no special petroleum laws exist, we must look to the mining codes for light on the petroleum policy. As the laws and regulations for the extraction of the metals are often difficult of application to, and are lacking in many essentials for, the petroleum industry, it is best for persons or companies desiring to enter, on a large scale, into the petroleum exploration and development of countries not having special petroleum legislation, to obtain a concession contract from the executive of the country under consideration, and to have the concession approved by the congress. If this concession, which would then be a special law, contains nothing contrary to the constitution of that country and does not infringe on vested rights of third parties, it should be reasonably safe. If in such country there is some doubt as to whether the petroleum subsoil is owned by the nation or the private surface owner, only public lands should be covered with the concession. Guatemala is the only republic in the group that discriminates directly against foreigners. Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela require waivers of diplomatic protection.' Colombia requires foreigners to agree to be bound by its alien law. ELECTRICAL investigations carried out in regions containing sedimen-tary rocks showed that sediments generally are good electrical conductors, a fact which at the present time is used for structural investigations by electrical methods. It is of fundamental importance, not only for these investigations but also for electrical prospecting in general, to know the electrical properties of various soils and rocks. It will be useful, there-fore, to discuss this question with the hope that the general points of view discussed in this paper will perhaps be, completed by further observations and determinations of material from various localities. This paper is based principally on the study of literature, and the purpose is primarily a discussion of the main factors that determine the electrical conductivity of soils and rocks. It will follow, however, that the factors discussed here also frequently decide how far a certain orebody can be regarded as a good electrical conductor compared with the sur-rounding rocks. All-rocks are more or less porous; and the pores are filled with liquids and gases. Their electrical conductivity, therefore, depends on the following factors: 1. The electrical conductivity of minerals composing the rock. 2. Electrical conductivity of the liquid filling the pores. 3. Proportion of the volume of liquid filling pores of the rocks to the solid rock material. 4. Shape of the pores. 5. Arrangement of the particles of gas and liquids. 6. Temperature. Dry minerals, with the exception of certain ore minerals, are complete nonconductors from the point of view of applied geophysics; in the present investigation we deal with rocks which have no conducting minerals, and factor 1, therefore, is not important. The same is true of soils. The liquids contained in soils and rocks in most cases are waters, some-times oil. As oil is a nonconductor of electricity, the impregnating waters will determine the electrical conductivity of soils and rocks.

Many requests for information as to the possibility of washing coals to some predetermined percentage of ash or sulfur have suggested that the producers aim to satisfy some degree of purity set by the user of the fuel, rather than to attain the greatest economic benefit to all concerned. This paper is written to show that the highest economic purity of washed coal can be determined from washability studies of the raw coal, costs of mining and washing coal, and data on the effect of ash and sulfur on the value of the coal for the particular use for which it is intended. Coke fob Blast-fuenace Use For purposes of illustration, we take the case of coal washed for coke to be used in the iron blast furnace. The method outlined can be made general in its application by substituting for the figures used here the actual operating figures for the particular case under consideration. In general, it costs the blast-furnace operation from 8 to 25 c. per ton of pig iron to slag out each 1 per cent. of ash introduced into the blast furnace by the coke. This figure depends on which one per cent. of ash is removed, and decreases with decrease in ash. When blast furnaces and coal mines are considered as a whole, the figure decreases to zero and then becomes negative, on account of low recovery of washed coal. Various figures1 have been given by different investigators. These figures necessarily differ, not only on account of the differences in operating costs but on account of the difference in the respective fuels as well. For the purpose of this paper, which, as explained, is to point out a method of attacking a certain problem, the figures used in the exposition of the method are of secondary importance. It is apparent that no universally applicable figures can be used, because there are none. Each plant has its own coal,2 its own operating cost, and its own conditions.

The present publication is a continuation of the work on gas analysis described in a paper presented before the Institute of Metals Division year ago.' While that paper was largely descriptive in character dealing with the various parts of the apparatus and method of operations the present one gives numerical data obtained as a result of a series c experiments with iron-carbon alloys. The apparatus and the method applied are essentially the same as previously described, changes bein only in minor details. Attention should be called to the fact that in the present work we ar dealing with the gaseous mixtures obtained as a result of vacuum meltin of various ferrous alloys. It should be understood that when the term "degasified sample" and "products of degasification" are used, the refer to the sample remaining after the vacuum fusion of the alloy an the gaseous products removed therefrom, respectively. The write does not wish to create the impression that the metallic products of thj process are absolutely free from any gaseous elements, nor that the gase obtained are present as such in the original sample. These two point are not yet definitely known and are subjects for future investigatior The point, however, which has been established beyond doubt, i that all the gases dealt with come from the metallic charge and ar present either in the charge as such, or are produced as a result of chemic: reactions going on within the charge. The suggestion that the gases an due to the reactions between the metallic charge and the refractor materials has no valid basis. General Procedure A series of iron-carbon alloys was prepared in a magnesia-line graphite crucible placed in a high frequency laboratory furnace open t the atmosphere.
