The process of manufacturing ferrophosphorus lies not alone in smelting a mixture of phosphates, silica, iron ore, with coke as fuel, but upon smelting this mixture with coke and air as chemical agents as well as heat producers and in conjunction with extraordinary procedures and manipulations making the process continuous and profitable. For best results there must be cool top, limited fusion zone, hot bottom, good mechanical condition of stock and perfect distribution of gases; also minimum air supply, high heats and excess of coke or carbon. FERROPHOSPHORUS, an alloy of phosphorus and iron or perhaps a physical mixture of definite compounds of iron and phosphorus, has become of increasing importance as the use of the basic open hearth has extended. Commercial ferrophosphorus is a porous, brittle metal of crystalline structure and often with a bluish metallic luster. A typical analysis is as follows: PER CENT. Phosphorus 18.0 to 22.0 Iron 80.0 76.0 Oxygen 0.2 Sulfur : 0.3 Silicon 0.1 Carbon : 0.1 Manganese 0.2 This alloy was first made in an electric furnace, as it was thought that the high heat of the electric arc together with the reductive effect of carbon was necessary. About 1898, J. J. Gray, Jr., was producing a high-phosphorus pig iron in his furnace at Rockdale, Tenn., by using high-phosphorus, local iron ores. As these high-phosphorus ores were difficult to obtain, he conceived the idea of increasing the phosphorus content of the pig iron by the addition of phosphate rock to the furnace burden. When the phosphorus content of the pig was kept low and only small amounts of phosphate rock were added to the burden, no particular troubles were encountered, but when he increased the amount of phosphate rock to produce an 18 per cent. alloy, his furnace troubles rapidly multiplied.

In the assay of copper-bearing material for gold and silver, the elimination of copper before the final cupellation is of course essential, because any copper left in the lead-button will carry gold into the cupel; and a method which will effectively remove the copper with the smallest amount of manipullation is desirable. The scorification method is often rendered long and tedious by the necessity of repeatedly re-scorifying the button— to say nothing of the risk of losing Au—Ag thereby incurred. An ore carrying, for instance, 10 per cent,. of copper and only 0.1 or 0.2 oz. gold per ton, cannot be scorified with accurate results, because so many portions would have to be taken in order to get enough gold for weighing. On the other hand, the crucible method, with potassic nitrate and nails, would not do at all in such a case, because all the copper would be reduced by the nails, and (if the charge were 0.5 A. T.) this would defeat cupellation, by causing cupel-absorption of gold. In matte-assays, more concentrated value permits the determination of gold from smaller portions, and thus diminishes the difficulty experienced with ores. The method here described has been severely tested, during use for more than a year, and hart never failed hitherto, in the assay of any ore or product to which it has been applied. It is not proposed as perfect for every variety of ore or matte—probably no method would be that; but it is believed that, intelligently used, with the modifications dictated by practice, it will give better results, with less expenditure of time and labor, than any other known to the writer.

Methods for determining permeability presented by W. D. Kruger3 in a paper entitled "Determining Areal Permeability Distribution by Calculation" have considerable merit. They can be expected to contribute significantly to analysis of flow in heterogeneous systems. Some rather subtle yet important conditions must be met, however, to assure that the computed permeabilities are correct. The conditions which insure a unique permeability distribution may have been overlooked in the method as proposed and presented in the subject paper. The subtlety of the special requirements may permit good agreement between computed and measured pressures in the reservoir; but the computed permeability may still be in error. The general theory and discussion of the requirements for a unique determination of the permeability distribution are presented elsewhere in more detail.7'8 Accordingly, only major features will be presented here in the notation of Kruger. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF REQUIREMENTS A brief mention of the route to be followed in showing the special requirements may be helpful. The equation to be solved is a quasilinear, first-order, partial differential equation in the unknown permeability. This equation can be solved through an extension of Lagrange's method by reduction to a system of subsidiary ordinary differential equations. Through consideration of the identity of one of the Lagrange subsidiary differential equations with the stream function, a special interrelationship can be shown. The interrelationship has special significance with respect to the boundary condition. If the boundary function satisfies part of the subsidiary differential equation, no unique solution for the permeability distribution exists. In the physical problem this requirement for uniqueness indicates that the permeability measurements used as a boundary condition can not be along a stream tube. The boundary condition must be along a line, or series of lines, which completely traverse the region and pass through every stream tube.

THE solid solubility of cementite in a-iron has been investigated a number of times and there is now general agreement on the solubility of about 0.018 wt pct at the eutectoid temperature, 720°C. With decreasing temperature, the solubility falls off so rapidly and to such a low value that no data obtained by standard metallurgical methods are available below 500°C. Using a new technique, however, Dijkstral has obtained apparently accurate solubilities down to 400°C; which data agree well with previously measured solubilities in the 600" to 700°C temperature range.' The present paper has in part the purpose of extending his work to still lower temperatures. Earlier work of Low and Gensamer3 on iron has established that the presence of a relatively small amount of carbon can play a tremendous role in affecting the mechanical properties. In particular they found that the yield point remained high as they reduced the amount of carbon in the iron; the yield point dropped only after the carbon content had fallen to something less than 0.003 wt pct, the point where their carbon analysis failed. It seemed desirable to the present author to see if some means could not be found to extend this part of their work. This investigation has then the additional purpose to determine the range of carbon concentration in which the major change occurs. Solubility The method used in the present work to measure small percentages of carbon in a-iron utilizes internal friction. Since this method may not be fa-miliar to the reader, the following explanation will be given (a part of this procedure is from unpublished results of Dijkstra): It is known that the internal friction associated with the diffusion of

Anand and Agarwala recently determined diffusion coefficients by the residual activity (Gruzin) method for several tracers in large-grained, high-purity aluminum. D values at any particular temperature in the range of 400" to 630°C were about four orders of magnitude lower for cd115, 1n114, sn113, and pdlm than for Ag. Corresponding values for Do and Q in the Arrhenius equation were also quite small. It was pointed out previously that unusually low diffusion coefficients within the region of a specimen near a free surface may be the major cause of such anomalous results for impurity diffusion in silver and in aluminum.44 Anand and Agarwala considered this possibility but rejected it because their penetration profiles were "homogeneous" and "yielded diffusion coefficients obeying the Arrhenius plot". Neither of these two criteria satisfactorily prove or disprove the presence of a near-surface effect. Such can be accomplished only by direct serial sectioning in which the chips ground from the specimen are assayed for tracer content. In fact, such experiments always should be done prior to use of the somewhat indirect Gruzin method where the finer details of the transport process cannot be determined. There have been several other reports of unusually low D, Do, and Q values for impurity diffusion in silver and aluminum.1"4 It is interesting to note that all of these studies made use of the Gruzin method. Also, in all cases where the same systems were examined by use of a direct serial sectioning technique, large near-surface effects were observed. One must conclude therefore that the reported anomalous diffusion parameters for cd, In114, sn113, and pd in aluminum are due to some near-surface effect, while the results for Agl10 indicate that no such effect was encountered for this system.

Recent papers by S. T. Yuster have called attention to the largely ignored concept that there will be a transfer of viscous forces across fluid-fluid interfaces during the flow of immiscible fluid phases through porous media. This leads to the implication that the relative permeability us saturation function, as applied to each of the fluid phases of the system, will in some way be dependent on the viscosities of all the other fluid phases which are contiguous to the flowing fluid of interest. In fact, Yuster has selected and analyzed the properties of a capillary-tube model of the reservoir-prototype flow systems and concludes from his studies that relative permeability values will be very markedly influenced by the viscosity ratio in two-phase systems. On the other hand, relative permeability data have been reported in the literature for more than 20 years; and where these data are consistent at all, they consistently how no dependence on viscosity ratio (cf. chapter 7 of Muskat3 for a resume of past experiniental work). This paradoxical situation has prompted us to re-evaluate Yuster's work. The major flaw we find has to do with the properties of the model Yuster employed to give qualitative support to his predictions. This model is defective in that important surface area parameters characteristic of the prototype-reservoir flow system have not been propertly scaled. Fig. 1 shows how we believe Yuster's model should be modified to circumvent this difficulty. It depicts the capillary tube of radius R and length L, comprised of two elements in series. The first part of length, L has the nonwetting phase flowing centrally out to a radius distance r, where an interfacial boundary exists with the wetting phase which flows in the concentric annular pace of the tube. At the meeting of the Board of Directors the following resolution was passed: "The members of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers desire: to place on record their appreciation of the very great generosity of one of their colleagues and a member of the Board, George D. Barron, expressed in his gift of $5000 to relieve the financial stringency caused by the unusual expenditures of the Institute for war work and the remission of dues of those members on active service." By-Law VIII. was amended to make a slight change in District No. 5. The report of the Auditing Committee was accepted. Tellers were appointed to: count the ballots on officers and on the proposed amendment. The proposed budget for the year 1919 was presented. The following resolution re Secretary Emeritus Rossiter W. Raymond, which had been prepared, by request, by Dr. A. R. Ledoux was then unanimously adopted. "The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers would place upon its minutes its profound sense of loss and sorrow in the death of Rossiter Worthington Raymond, Ph. D., LL. D., Secretary Emeritus of the Institute. Both as one of its founders and as its Sec-retary for 27 years, his was the guiding spirit of the Institute for more than a generation. "During the greater part of this long period, it might almost have been said that the Institute was Dr. Raymond-and Dr. Raymond the Institute. When with the progress of growth and development, great changes were introduced, Dr. Raymond acquiesced in these in spite of some misgivings, such as those with which a father might contemplate the emergence of his child from the careful supervision of the home; but as Secretary Emeritus for the past eight years, lie was always ready with valuable advice and helpful suggestion.

The leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which, according to Pélabon,' is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgstroma 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343", if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430" if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S33 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)z.Sbz03 melts at 517°C.6 4. The volatility of Sb2Ss and SbzOs, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures. Plattner6 that when fused and brought to a red heat, it burns with a bluish-white flame to Sb2Oa which passes off as a

Many investigations have shown that the manganese enhances the deoxidation power of silicon. Here it is suggested that this phenomenon could be explained in terms of the formation of impure silica. Data of Hilty and Crafts on the Fe-Mn-Si-O System has been evaluated on the basis of the reaction S_i + 20 = (SiO2) where (SiO2) denotes silica of variable activity. The activity of silica in this system is a function of aMn/aSi and the temperature, and can be described by the equation 12700 l°gaSiOz = -6.85+ - - 0.5 log aMn /asi PRACTICAL melting experience has shown that it is helpful to maintain a certain range of Mn/Si ratio in deoxidizing quality alloy steels. Herty,1 as early as 1932, reported a strong association between manganese and silicon as did schenck2 and Korber and Oelsen3 in later work. More recently, Hilty and crafts4 have studied the solubility of oxygen in the Fe-Si-O system, both with and without manganese. Their study confirmed the marked ability of manganese to increase the deoxidizing power of silicon. This phenomenon has remained unexplained in the liter,ature5 since it has been shown that manganese has virtually no influence on the activity coefficients of silicon or oxygen.= In this paper, an explanation for the role of manganese is suggested and equations are devised for quantitatively describing this influence. DISCUSSION Hilty and crafts4 equilibrated their melts under an argon atmosphere and the system established equilibrium with a self-generated slag which was not always the oxide of lowest free energy. ` LAWRENCE ADDICKS, New York, N. Y.-We have really two competitive processes for the production of electrolytic zinc. In the process used at Great Falls, the ore is roasted and the calcines leached, leaving a residue which has to be smelted; in the other method, the ore is burned, the zinc and lead fumed off, and the condensed fumes are leached. I do not think that we can yet come to any decision as to which is the better way to attack the problem. Of course if we roast first and then leach, various substances remain in the calcines which may consume sulphuric acid; whereas if we do the burning first, we obtain simply the zinc and lead oxides, with considerable sulphate, in the fume, and there is no shortage of acid. It also depends partly on the complexity of the ore. The one that Mr. Hall is treating and the ore they are treating at Great Falls are not quite alike, but I think they are sufficiently similar to make a comparison of the two methods, working in competition, on different parts of the country, very interesting. C. E. SCHWARTZ, Miami, Okla.-Mr. Hall states that the Joplin conditions are not suitable for the manufacture of electrolytic zinc. When we speak of Joplin ore in general, we consider, of course, a 60-per cent: concentrate with comparatively low iron, but if a low-grade concentrate could be made from tailings and so-called chats, then the problem would be quite different. A Joplin ore is comparatively simple to treat electrolytically, and I believe the electrolytic process would open a field for the treatment of such ores as would not be ordinarily smeltable; that is,

For a very brief description of the North Texas area and the general geological features with which it is associated, the reader is referred to the summary for 1935. As in previous years, the authors have been unable to undertakc the almost impossible task of isolating statistics for the hundreds of productive "spots" which are included within the generally productive areas of the several counties. However, pools that appear to be definitely isolated—as, for example, the Foard County production and the new pool recently developed southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County—are covered separately. During the year 1936, both routine development in proven or scmi-proven areas and exploratory drilling showed a decrease over the year 1935, there having been a total of 1453 wells drilled in the district during 1936, as compared to 1619 in 1935. It is also of interest to note that abandonments exceeded completions in 1936. Developments during 1936 While a number of local productive spots were found in Wilbarger, Archer and Wichita Counties, and numerous minor local extensions to older producing areas were developed in practically all the producing countics in the district, only two discoveries of sufficient importance to justify special mention were made. Anderson and Kerr No. 1 Bruhlmeyer, about two miles southeast of Gainesville in Cooke County, was completed in April, at a total depth of 2014 ft., for an initial production of 315 bbl. daily from a sand of Pennsylvanian (Canyon) age. Development has been rapid and the field is about drilled up. During November the 100 wells in the field averaged about 40 bbl daily. The structure appears to be a small fold associated with the northeast flank of the main uplift, which extends in a northwest-southeast direction across Cooke and Montague Counties.

WHAT was certainly the greatest event of January, and perhaps it will prove to be the greatest of 1923, or even of the next decade, was the meeting of the premiers of the principal Euro-pean powers in Paris on Jan. 2, to consider what should be done with respect to German reparations. The French and British were unable to come to any agree-ment, and the conference broke up on Jan. 4. The French and British parted friends, but each with the determination henceforth to pursue its own economic and political way. This event was profound in its significance and perhaps will be calamitous) in its consequences. Following the disruption of the Conference at Paris, the French immediately began preparations to occupy the Ruhr district on the ground that Germany was in default on coal deliveries, without waiting. for Jan. 15, the next due date for reparation payment. This action by the French led to orders being issued by President Harding on Jan. 10 for the withdrawal of the remainder of the American troops on the Rhine. Thus ended the physical participation in. European affairs by the American army, whose vanguard landed in France in June, 1917. The French occupation of the Ruhr Valley, i.e., the great industrial region of western Westphalia, was made with a large military force. The Germans offered no physical resistance, and passed under French control with sullen resentment. The coal miners to a con-siderable extent refused to work and there was more or less disorganization of railway service. Before the end of the month the opinion was expressed that the French occupation was an economic failure and there were reports of French blast furnaces being blown out for lack of coke.

Heine's " blue test" for copper, as described by the authorities generally, calls for a set of standard colors; and there has been some discussion concerning the relative superiority, for this purpose, of sulphate and nitrate solutions. The whole matter evidently hinges on the preservation of the standard colors in well-stoppered bottles. The apparatus described by Q. L. Heath* cannot be much improved, when very accurate readings are required. The following method was devised for the purpose of doing away with preserved sets of standard colors, by making a fresh standard for each batch of assays. The solutions are prepared in the usual way, each ammoniacal solution being filtered into its separate bottle, and then filled up to the containing-mark and thoroughly mixed. A similar color-bottle, with an " S " etched upon it, to distinguish it from the other bottles, which are numbered to correspond with the samples, is kept to run the standard. About 150 C.C. of water is put into it, and then the amount of acid (sulphuric or nitric) present in each determination, followed by 30 C.C. of ammonia (s. g. 0.90), which should make the mixture strongly ammoniacal. The liquid is now made up almost to the containing-mark (200 c.c.), say within 1 C.C. The lowest assay is selected first and placed alongside the standard, which, at the beginning, contains no copper. A copper-solution is then dropped into the standard from a burette ; and after each addition the bottle is well shaken and compared with the assay-sample. This operation is repeated until the two shades match exactly, when the burette is read and the assay-result is calculated. The assay next in order of depth of color is now taken and treated in the same way, and so on, until the batch is completed. It

RACKLESS equipment is being used by the T Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. to develop a folded limestone deposit economically and safely with inexperienced men. Cost and quality of development stone results in a saving when it is used instead of outside sources of limestone. This favorable cost has been attained by following a methods development and training program described in this paper. It is expected that further savings in favor of the mined stone will be made when stopes now being prepared are in production. The present equipment will be used for loading from stope draw points. The limestone is blended with quarried cement rock to serve as raw material for Portland cement, first produced in this country by Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. from a process developed by its president, David 0. Saylor, in 1873. For many years the cement rock alone or with a small amount of added limestone was used for raw materials. Later as specifications were raised and the richer portions of quarries were depleted, limestone from outside sources was required in increasing amounts. In 1925 D. J. Uhle, the general manager, began to prospect company property for limestone. It was known that the argillaceous cement rock was underlain by crystalline high calcium limestone. After an extensive drilling program it was found that there were large reserves of limestone underlying a recumbent syncline exposed in the south wall of the company's No. 3 cement rock quarry. A quarry was started on the vertical limb of this fold in 1927, and by 1930 the full requirement of the plant was met. After 1945 production diminished because of the occurrence of dolomite beds in the south wall. The quarry floor was then 135 ft below the cement rock level and 285 ft below surface. Viewed from the standpoint of an economist, the task which faces the petroleum producing industry is one of intelligent adjustment so that technology can perform the job of efficient exploitation, while at the same time the interests of producers and consumers remain adequately protected. The crux in the task of making this adjustment lies in the difficulty of arranging the instrumentalities of production to accord with the physical characteristics of oil. For example, oil is exploited under a competitive economic system based on private ownership and contract, with the hope that profits will attract capital and enterprise, and with competition supposedly acting as the regulative factor. Whether such a scheme of industrial organization works is partially dependent upon the ability of the producer to withold or produce his commodity as he sees fit, in accordance with market demand. But in the oil industry, the enterpriser does not have complete control over the expansion and contraction of production, for, because of the decisions of the courts that ownership in oil depends upon its possession, desire for immediate output becomes the controlling force in production. Consequently, the theoretical commands and restraints of free enterprise are not operative because there is no security of property, and the result is loss due to the following economic maladjustments: (1) Production not completely responsive to price control. (2) Production at excessive cost. (3) Loss of oil, a highly exhaustible natural resource. If economic maladjustments are to be eliminated, there should be a change in the organization of production so as to provide efficient exploitation of the oil and at the same time to insure individual property interests. The latter is necessary if economic considerations are to become primary factors in regulating production. THE increased service demands on some of the products of the National Malleable Castings Co. prompted it about eight years ago to investigate the electric furnace, both in America and in Europe. The process bad' already been sufficiently developed in Europe to lead us to believe that the electric furnace would most nearly meet our requirements. After further investigation and consultation with the highest authorities on the subject, we decided upon the Heroult type as the simplest and most practicable. In 1910, we built a furnace of this type, of 300 lb. capacity, for experimental purposes, and although it was crudely constructed the quality of the material we were able to make justified the installation of a 6-ton Heroult furnace in 1912. This furnace has three electrodes, 17 in. in diameter, uses three-phase, 60-cycle current, and is equipped with Thury regulators, which give us good regulation and a uniform load on the line even when cold melting. The power factor of the furnace is 94 per cent. Since July, 1912, the furnace has been in continuous operation, producing up to the present time, over 20,000 tons of both carbon and alloy steels of varying analyses and of exceptional quality. Both cold-and hot-metal charges have been used, with a power consumption of about 150 kw-hr. per ton in the case of hot-metal charges and from 500 to 600 kw-hr. per ton in the case of cold charges. The electric energy consumed varies according to the final analysis of the steel and the amount of refining required. Too much cannot be said about the refining possibilities of the electric furnace, for no other method of steel manufacture can compete with the electric in this respect.

VICTOR G. HILLS, Denver, Colo. (communication to the Secretary*).¬If anyone advocates the abolition of the antecedent mineral discovery requirement for the purpose of making it easier to secure title to public land, I hasten to say that I am not of that number. I am in Hearty accord with all that Mr. Gardner has to say in regard to easy patenting as a handicap to small camps, and that in general it acts to retard the mining industry. And the following sentences I want to repeat in order to emphasize and endorse them, "None of the writers on this subject seem to have taken into consideration the effect amending the law pertaining to mineral discovery will have upon the Government's administration of the public land. It must be borne in mind that this land belongs absolutely to the people of the United States as a whole, and their interest must be considered. It is not a no-man's land, as some people would appear to believe." However, I believe that the discovery prerequisite should be abolished, because it fails to effect the protection for which it was designed, and I look for other provisions that will better serve the purpose. We propose to abolish the law of apex not because the theory is objectionable but because the question of physical fact gives rise to never ending litigation. Now the design of antecedent mineral discovery is good; the court rulings are unobjectionable; but when it comes to the physical fact this requirement is second only to the apex law as a healthy litigation breeder. The law of supply and demand is, in general terms, that law which governs the price of any commodity in an unrestricted competitive market. There are several variables which, for the purpose of this discussion, will be defined only as they apply to the petroleum industry: Production: The volume of petroleum that is moved from leases. Stocks: The volume of petroleum that is in the hands of the tank farm and pipeline companies. Inventory: The value of the stocks at the market. Consumption: The indicated delivery of oil to others than those who hold stocks. Demand: The potential absorbing power of the consuming market. Demand is the expression of the needs of the consumer and may depend on the economic value of the oil to the consumer. In times of low prices, the demand is the same as the consumption but during periods of high prices or deficiency in supply, the demand may be greater than consumption. A general expression of the law is as follows: production or consumption Some relation between stocks and or controls price or demand inventory The Law as Applied to Crude-oil Market The above general expression of the law shows that there are six relations between variables that must be investigated in any attempt to establish the exact status of price control at any time. Production vs. Consumption If stocks of crude oil were very low, so that the flow of oil to the market was directly from the producer to the consumer and not, in a large measure, through stocks, some relation between production and consumption would be proportional to price changes. DuriNG the sinking of the Needmore shaft, on one of the leases of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co north of Webb City, Missouri, a very strong flow of water was encountered at a depth of 140 ft. Because OF the speed at which the water rose in the shaft after pumping was discontinued, and in order to speed up sinking operations, a new type of shaft bar and drilling equiprnent was devised, which saved approximately one hour on each shift This bar is made of an ordinary scren type shaft bar with a common drill arm attached to the bar by clamps and welded Into place To this drill arm is attached an ordinary arm clamp with set collar below Through this clamp is attached another drill bar of ordinary length so constructed that it slides back and forth and rotates around the perimeter of the shaft on the set collar A tripod saddle with legs removed is welded to the rotating bar, which enables the drill operator to drill holes at any angle completely around the shaft and also, after an arm extension, permits the drilling of the corner holes without removal of the rig from the saddle Upon completion of the drilling of a shaft round, all that is necessary for the complete removal of the drill machine and shaft bar is to engage the hoist hook through a. ¾-in. eye provided for that purpose on top of the bar and disconnect the air and water lines from the machine, thereby making it possible to pull the whole apparatus out in one piece. At no time is it necessary to remove the machine from the saddle Screw jacks are installed on the vertical bar to further ensure the rigidity of the shaft and bar arm.
