Preliminary estimates indicate that world consumption of petroleum products and related fuels in 1937 shattered previous records with a figure of 1,920,000,000 bbl.; that is, 124,000,000 bbl. more than the 1936 total. The writers, as in previous years, have been unable to account for all the available supply in 1937. This "unaccounted-for" supply, which formerly was thought to go largely into storage in foreign countries, was close to 53,000,000 bbl. in 1933; 93,000,000 in 1934; 111,000,000 in 1935; 75,000,000 in 1936 and 148,000,000 in 1937. As this discrepancy between supply and demand continued year after year, it became evident that other reasons than additional foreign stocks were responsible for it. It can now be stated that the "unaccounted-for" supply (see Table 1) goes to take care of: (1) consumption of petroleum products and related fuels for military purposes, the figures of which have been and are kept confidential by foreign countries, (2) additions to stocks to be consumed for military and nonmilitary purposes in foreign countries on which likewise no information is available, (3) errors incurred in the conversion of figures of production of crude oil, its products and related fuels from "weight" units, as used in Russia, for instance, to their American or "volume" equivalents and vice versa, and (4) to the lack of reliable statistics on production and consumption, particularly from Russia, the

DESPITE strikes, domestic production of copper and zinc in 1951 rose about 3 pct and 10 pct, respectively. Lead output fell only about 7 pct. Primary refined, including processed scrap and imported concentrates, was somewhat higher for zinc, and slightly lower for copper and lead. Prospects are for moderately larger mine and refined production in 1952 according to Standard & Poor's analysis of nonferrous metals. The survey goes on to report domestic copper prices averaged 14 pct higher in 1951, lead prices 30 pct higher, and zinc prices 32 pct higher. The 2¢ rise in zinc and lead ceilings in October will lift the average price in 1952 over 8 pet, assuming no further price change. Currently, OPS appears opposed to raising the 24 ½ ¢ copper ceiling to the 24 ½ ¢ maximum on imported metal. The steep premiums in world markets are likely to be reduced in 1952. Sales in 1951 were at new peaks. A further moderate rise is indicated for 1952. Earnings of the industry were at a new high in 1951. The increase for companies covered in the survey was perhaps 25 pet, despite a tax rate of about 53 pet, against about 40 pct. in 1950. Relatively maintained to moderately higher earnings are currently indicated for 1952. About two thirds of the companies covered in the survey raised dividends, including extras, in 1951. In general, maintained payments appear probable in 1952.

Morton Webb, Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa (communication to the Secretary*):—The experience of Mr. Boeh-mer in the Leadville district and his reputation as an engineer assure the interest of anything he may write on the ore-bodies of that district; and all engineers who have operated in Leadville will agree that the theory of the origin of the Leadville deposits, as given by Mr. Emmons in his famous monograph, does not adequately explain the genesis of all the deposits. The solutiou of the problem does not, however, appear to be quite so simple as Mr. Boehmer would make it; and the advance pamphlet issued by the U. S. Geological Survey, pending the completion of the main report, shows that there is still much ground for controversy. No doubt the later eruptive0 had a greater influence on the deposition of the ore-bodies than was thought at the time of the first investigation by the Survey; but it has always appeared to me that the influence exerted by these dikes mas more in the nature of a physical than a chemical one. The weight of evidence in recent years is mostly in the direction of ascension rather than lateral secretion; and one of the strongest evidences is the fact that most of the ore-bodies lie under one of the comparatively impervious layers which help to make up the structure of these hills.

Discussion of the paper of L. C. MORGANROTH, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2345 to 2352. D. T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-I would like to hear some further detail as to the California deposits. L. C. MORGANROTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-We have examined the California deposits at various times; I have been over practically all of them myself. These deposits are all of the massive variety. While it is possible that it could be mined and used for metallurgical purposes, it is not feasible because it costs too much. At the present time magnesite which is mined in California is used in the making of plaster, or by the paper trade. Careful figures show that if the California magnesite could be delivered to Atlantic seaports in the crude state at not over $4 a gross ton, and assuming that it would give the same results as the Austro-Hungarian magnesite, it would be cheaper to use the latter. It is also more difficult to dead-burn the massive magnesite, for while it starts to give up its gas readily, the difficulty consists in driving off the last few per cent., and unless this is driven off the magnesite will absorb C02 from the air, so that in a few months it may have 10 or 12 per cent. The coal-measures of George's Creek coal-region, in Maryland, lie in a comparatively flat synclinal basin, about 4 miles wide. The dip of the measures is, in places near the edge of the basin, as much as 20 feet in 100. The Pittsburgh seam, known locally as the " Big Vein," is the only seam worked at the present time. Ocean No. 3, one of the large mines of the Consolidation Coal Company, has its opening on the outcrop of the Pittsburgh seam, in a ravine which cuts into this seam to such an extent as to bring this opening to within a mile of the axis of the basin. After working all the coal to the rise of this point, the mine was further developed by extending a slope down the dip of the seam, making such an angle with the line of greatest dip as to give a grade varying from 1 to 10 per cent., down which the empty cars carry a rope from a single-drum winding-engine. The coal was worked from each side of this slope in successive Iifts during its progress. From the top of the slope, for a distance of 4000 feet to the fourth lift, the " make " of water is drained by gravity through a heading into the adjoining mine. Below this point the water was pumped into this same heading, at the fourth lift, from which point, as before mentioned, it flowed by gravity.

It is a fact that is coming to be more widely recognized by the general public, as well as by members of the medical fraternity, that the health of persons living in our hill-country depends in no small degree upon the drinking water obtained, just as it has been found that the* use of pure water in the lowlands and swamp-areas of the Southern States results in practical immunity from malarial diseases. Hence the problem, how to obtain supplies of wholesome water for the towns and manufacturing establishments in the hill-country or Piedmont plateau-region of the Southeastern States, becomes one of considerable interest, the importance of which will continue to increase, as the favorable conditions for manufactures and agriculture in this region will make it, in the near future, the most thickly populated portion of the South Atlantic States. Water-supplies from Surface-streams are unquestionably of the first importance; and in the mountain counties, where the region is still largely forest-covered and the streams are swift and continually aerated by rapids and cascades, the water is of superior purity and clearness. This statement is also applicable to the more elevated and sparsely settled portions of the Piedmont plateau; but in the less hilly and more thickly settled portions of this region the streams are more sluggish, and the waters more muddy and less pure, owing to the fact that a much larger proportion of the surface is under cultivation.

INTRODUCTION This review deals with the controls exerted by unconformities on the stratigraphic and areal distribution of gold (and uranium) in Precambrian conglomerates. The relations described are drawn mainly from Precambrian basins in southern Africa, particularly the Witwatersrand Basin. The mining industry of South Africa started in earnest with the discovery of diamonds in 1866. Gold was first discovered in 1870, and in March of 1886, two out-of-luck prospectors stumbled across what was to become the world's greatest goldfield, in the vicinity of Johannesburg. George Harrison and George Walker sold their claims for a pittance and were heard of no more. The Witwatersrand goldfield has been in continuous operation since that time, some 150 mines having operated at one time or another. Deep mining technology developed here has allowed operations to proceed to depths approaching 13,000 feet. The Witwatersrand has produced some 55% of all the gold ever mined, and currently produces 60% of the world's supply, some 650,000 kg Au per year. To 1971, the Witwatersrand had produced some $32 billion of gold and $2 billion of uranium (when average prices were less than $35/oz. for Au and $10/lb. for U308). At present prices, the annual Witwatersrand production of close to 700,000 kg would be worth about $10 billion. Uranium was discovered in the Witwatersrand in 1923. The subject of refractory materials occupies such an important position in all metallurgical works, and particularly in those of iron and steel, that any data concerning it must be of interest to the metallurgist. No apology is needed, therefore, for this attempt to describe the mining of fire-clay and the manufacture of fire-brick at one of the largest establishments in this country. Mount Savage is a small village situated in the northwestern part of the Cumberland coal basin, on the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad, and at the foot of Savage Mountain, from which the village takes its name. Fire-brick have been manufactured here almost, if not quite, as long as in any place in America; and as the brick are still shipped to nearly half the States in the Union every month, the manufactory is probably the most generally known. In the year 1837, a company was formed called the Maryland & New York Coal & Iron Company. It built two blast-fiirnaces, the ruins of which still remain. It was in the construction of these filmaces that the first fire-brick made here were used ; and though the iron works ran but spasmodically, the brick works have been in constant operation ever since. THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is con-fined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjust-ment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less. power, steel and main-tenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representa-tive concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa. In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion.

UNQUESTIONABLY, the outstanding feature of the piping for the sulphide plant is the large amount which had to be done in almost every size from instrument tubing to 84 in. OD pipe. In this article the piping will be considered under the main headings of Yard Piping and Building Piping. Tables I and II give data concerning the individual systems. In the case of yard piping the figures pertaining to lengths and weights are approximately correct; those for building piping are given only for the concentrator and smelter buildings where the amounts were the most extensive. Yard Piping The installation specifications for yard piping called for all sizes larger than 12 in. to have welded joints made with outside welding rings. This type of joint was selected over butt-welded joints because less time would be needed for lining up, damaged pipe ends would be less of a problem, and deflections up to 6° per joint could be made when necessary. These advantages were thought to outweigh the disadvantage of the greater amount of welding required. Yard piping in sizes of 3 to 12 in. was specified to have butt-welded joints made with inside welding rings which were intended to facilitate lining up and keep welding material out of the lines. Screwed connections were specified for sizes under 3 in. No protective coatings or wrappings were required on pipe to be buried because of the dry climate at Chuquicamata.

THIS communication reports the results of some work done on the effect of gold, palladium, and platinum on the liquid-gas-solid equilibrium in the Ag-O system,1,2 see Fig. 1. Recently several investigators3, 4, 5 have reported the effects of gold, palladium, platinum, and copper on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. This communication represents only a portion of the work done here on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver and liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, and Ag-Pt alloyss—the greater part having already been reprted. The apparatus, materials, and procedures used were similar to those of earlier work.' l The main precautions observed in obtaining these freezing points at constant temperature and PO2 = 1 atm were as follows: 1) The points were approached very slowly from higher temperatures. 2) In the very near vicinity of the L-G-S equilibrium point precautions were taken to see that the melt was in equilibrium with oxygen at one atm. Equilibrium was considered to have been attained when no more absorption of oxygen was observed in the last 15 min at a fixed temperature. 3) In the case of these alloys, the freezing point of the melt at 1 atm of oxygen and the equilibrium amount of oxygen absorbed by the liquid "infinitesimally" above this point were determined by lowering the temperature in very, very small steps, equilibrating at

The use of dynamite in cold weather is attended with some difficulty, owing to the freezing of the material and its consequeut liability to fail to explode when the fuse is fired. With proper methods and care the dynamite can be thawed with reasonable safety, but numerous accidents occur (more than get reported in the public press), due to carelessness in the operation and to the treacherous nature of the material, or a combination of both conditions. Dynamite will stand treatment at one time which at another time will result in explosion. An expert on explosives says that the most dangerous means of thawing cartridges are ingeniously devised by ignorant laborers; baking, boiling and toasting being favorite methods, while at a stone-quarry, in one instance, an apparatus was arranged for steaming the cartridges over a pot of boiling water. In this latter case the nitro-glycerine leaked through the canvas cover and settled on the bottom of the pot, with the result that an explosion occurred, the water acting as a tamping to the charge. The fact that small quantities of explosives containing nitroglycerine will burn quietly and without explosion if ignited by direct contact with a flame, has led to the dangerously mistaken reasoning that merely heating the explosive can produce no ill effect. Although the subject has no practical bearing on the metallurgy of the present day, it may not be entirely uninteresting to note how the art of silver-lead smelting has been, and in a few remote districts of Peru is still practiced by an old method, and under conditions widely different from our own. The subject will be considered under the following subdivisions,. viz.: The general conditions; construction and plan of furnaces;, fuels and ores; method of working; furnace products and slags. The mineral region of Peru varies in altitude from 10,000 to 16,000 feet above sea-level, comparatively few mines being locatedh above or below these limits. The timber-line in the valleys is at about 12,000 feet altitude on the western slope of the mountains, and even there the supply of wood is not sufficient to be utilized as fuel for furnaces. The sides of the mountains are either bare or covered with a hard bushy grass, which is most luxuriant during the latter part of the rainy season, from February to April. Agriculture on the western slope rarely reaches above 12,000 feet, while on the eastern slope its limit is at 14,000 feet; and in either case the height named is reached only in sheltered places. During the year 1934 there were no new or extraordinary developments in the proven fields. With few exceptions all companies operating in these fields continued intensive exploitation programs on their old properties in an attempt to maintain the normal production of former years. In one or two instances these exploitation activities have had such marked success that the total production for 1934 slightly surpassed that of 1933. The most striking increase in production is that shown by the Kilometer 27 pool of the Comodoro Rivadavia field. However, this increase cannot be attributed to intensive drilling, since it is the result of a more uniform daily withdrawal distributed among all the productive wells. The Province of Salta also showed another increase, so that, judging from the statistics of the past three years and in view of proposed exploration projects, the future may reveal some interesting developments in this province. One of the most interesting occurrences in Salta is the discovery, though not yet considered commercial, made at Macueta, near the boundary line between the Argentine and Bolivia. This exploration well was drilled by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and is the northernmost exploratory well in the republic. The oil from this well is of the same type and commercial value as that produced in the San Pedro and Lomitas fields. The producing horizon is also the same as that in the other Salta fields; that is, the Paleozoic Permo-Carboniferous.

Although 1931 witnessed no new discoveries of oil or gas in Oklahoma, the year is especially outstanding because of price demoralization, political intervention, abandonment of marginal properties, a strict curbing of oil flow from wells in flush fields and an extension of proration into settled fields. In spite of a strict, adherence to proration agreements, the price per barrel of oil sank from 65c to $1.07 to a low level of 10c to 22c. Table 1 gives the price range for crude oil in Oklahoma during the year. Under a martial law order by the governor, a period intervened from Aug. 4 to Oct. 10, of complete shutting in of the flush fields. This condition created an abrupt decline in the production curve during the two months' period. Oklahoma, as elsewhere, is passing through a "transition period" of relieving expensive above-ground storage by maintaining the more copious supplies of crude oil in the natural reservoirs. For many years the thousands of small, nearly depleted wells have been considered as being the "backbone of the industry." A large number of wells of this type are now idle or completely abandoned. More than 1100 abandonments were recorded by the state Corporation Commission during the year. The industry is becoming less interested in these small wells, replacing the former attitude by the curbed potentialities of flush pools. Discussion of the paper of THEODORE P. HOLT, presented at the Salt Lake meeting August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 91, July, 1914, pp. 1699 to 1708. F. S. SCHMIDT, Salt Lake City, Utah.-Any furnace that can make a chloridizing roast to yield an extraction of 92 to 93 per cent. and do this at a cost of less than 24c. per ton in a 10-ton unit opens great possibilities for the treatment of certain classes of ores. This cost does not include the salt and will be reduced to about 16 1/2c. per ton in the 35-ton furnace which are now being designed. On a trial run the roaster treated 9.6 ton: of Ontario stope fillings crushed to pass a ¼ -in. opening. The ore is well adapted to chlorination with the exception of insufficient sulphur and occasional days of high lime, but is not adapted to any other process The following is an analysis of the crude ore: Ag, 9.52; Au, 0.029 oz. Pb, 0.71; Cu, 0.11; SiO, 79.4; Zn, 0.57; S, 1.00; Fe, 7.9; Mn, 0.89 CaO, 1.20 per cent. The composition of the mix was: Per Cent. Dry crude ore : 83.4 Moisture 4.4 Salt 8.3 Coal dust 2.3 Pyrite, 70 per cent. pure 1.6

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE iron-nail method of assaying has been used for a number of years, but has not met with the approval of all assayers. The method possesses advantages which may be given as follows : (1) no preliminary treatment is required ; (2) a lead button of proper size can be obtained (3) it is economical. On, the other hand, it has its disadvantages, which may be summed up as follows: (1) it is not applicable to ores containing large amounts of impurities other than sulphur, as practically all the base metals will contaminate the lead button ; (2) the slag is unsatisfactory in the larger number of fusions; (3) the method was known to give low silver results under certain conditions and the gold results were questionable. It was with the idea of determining the extent of this latter disadvantage that the following investigation was undertaken. It is well known that the fusion obtained in the lend assay is far more satisfactory than that in the " nails method " for gold and silver. The principal difference in the charges as a class is the presence of considerable reducing agent in the lead charge, and a limited oxidizing action in the nails charge, due to PbO. The possibility of improving the nails fusion by simulating the lead charge was the reason for using argol in some tests, even though there were reasons for expecting this would have -au objectionable effect on the results.

PREVIOUS studies1 by the writer dealing with the embrittlement of copper have been concerned with the behavior of various pure and deoxidized coppers when exposed to an oxidation-reduction cycle, and the consequent evaluation of these materials on the basis of their resist-ance to this action. No attention was devoted to the variations in pene-tration of embrittlement with time, when these copper materials are exposed to a strong reducing gas, such as hydrogen, nor to the variations in oxygen penetration, with time and temperature, into the "pure" coppers. The cause of the embrittlement is the reduction of the oxygen in the copper by the hot reducing gas, so that a consideration of time, tempera-ture, the occurrence of hydrogen and oxygen must be given. For the purpose of differentiating some of "the involved factors, the present work may be divided into two separate series of experiments. The first of these deals with the oxidation of purified coppers under various conditions and then the subjection of these to a standard hydrogen treatment. The second series concerns the reduction, under different conditions, of tough-pitch coppers of several oxygen contents. The resulting data will give the rates of oxidation, and of reduction, for the materials involved. The first series of experiments will reveal how rapidly copper may become oxidized, while the second series will indicate how rapidly embrittlement will penetrate into an oxygen-containing copper when it is exposed to hydrogen at different temperatures.

Most theories of blasting phenomena are based on the condition that explosive charges have a spherical shape. If a cylindrical charge is considered, the explosive is usually assumed to have an infinite velocity of detonation. Another limitation is also often imposed whereby only one free face is considered to exist. Unfortunately, these conditions all serve to limit the number of variables involved and tend to over-simplify analyses. The result is that explanations for actual effects from blasts are seldom realistic. In addition, no solution has yet been found to explain the actions of certain blasting agents that appear to stress materials in a different manner than do many of the high explosives. In order to determine causes for some of the unexplained phenomena, investigations were conducted by the writers on both actual field blasts and theoretical problems. Although many solutions have been proposed to explain the rock breakage processes, none relate the effects of hole depth, explosive and rock energy- propagation velocities with charge placement geometry. Evidence indicates there is a definite interdependence of those factors and that they are of vital importance in proper drill-pattern design. For simplicity most of the discussion in this paper applies to vertical blast-holes drilled in uniform massive rock for open pit blasting, although the basic principles presented apply to all forms of blasting with certain basic modifications being necessary for specific field conditions.
