From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to outline the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man's status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930's, nearly everything that has happened since in the field of atomic energy would have been missed. Yet what a vast change this has made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to the atomic energy field. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man's status without even a pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

The Bureau of the Mint of the United States Treasury maintains 13 ofEces for the purchase of gold-bullion, and this paper describes an investigation to establish the reasonable differences in the assay-results at the various institutions which may be commercially allowable in the settlements between them. Beginning with the comparative assay of proof-gold at the Philadelphia mint and the Utrecht mint, which shows 0.00002 as the closest agreement now possible, nine tables of comparative results, taken from the regular work of the service, are given..These tables begin with very fine gold, produced in an electrolytic refinery, showing close agreement in the assay-results, and follow through decreasing gold fineness and increasing amounts and complexity of base metals to very impure and complex bars produced at cyanide-mills, some of which give widely-varying results. Next is given a series of results on samples, prepared and sent out to various laboratories in the service, to test the influence of different metals and various combinations upon the agreement of the assay-results ; 11 samples were sent out and each one was assayed from 44 to 71 times, making a total of 623 assays. To these ire added 107 assays of identical samples of coin-gold. TWO days of solid discussion, with barely time out for meals, characterized the Tulsa meeting of the Petroleum Division. It was preeminently an earnest gathering devoted to technical matters. Sessions were held in the Crystal room of the Mayo Hotel with luncheon served each day in the back of the same room so that talk of methods, while slightly less formal, extended right through the lunch hour. Thursday evening the Committee did provide a little relaxation in an informal dinner at the Tulsa Club where, after a brief musical program and an amusing skit by the local Herman the Great, brief addresses in non-technical vein were made by President Farish and Vice-president Rice of the Humble Company, Henry L. Doherty of Cities Service, Secretary. Bain of the Institute, and others. The presence of leading executives of a number of the oil companies at the dinner and the sessions, and the cordial approval they expressed of the work of the Division were especially gratifying. The total registration was 215 with 100 at the dinner and 70-to 80 lunching together each day.

Ore deposits in the Southern Appalachians are ( 1) sedimentary or syngenetic, ( 2) epigenetic, and ( 3) residual. In general, deposits characteristic of high temperature and pressure are found in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces and those of low and intermediate temperature and pressure, including the sedimentary ores, are found in the Valley and Ridge and Appalachian Plateaus provinces. Residual deposits are present throughout the area. Recognition of several periods of intrusion and metamorphism in the Appalachians has changed former concepts which held that most mineralization was of late Paleozoic age in a zonal pattern including all four provinces. Many deposits probably are of early or midPaleozoic age. Similarly, recent studies in geomorphology indicate that the formation of residual deposits is a continuous process and not related to specific cycles of peneplanation.

THE need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. WASHABILITY STUDIES The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money, can hardly be spent on "feed surveys" to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus.

EVERETTE LEE DEGOLYER, past President of the Institute and Anthony F. Lucas Medalist, was presented with the John Fritz Medal at a dinner at the Wal-dorf-Astoria Hotel in New York, Jan. 14. Dr. DeGolyer is the third representative of the Institute in recent years to receive the John Fritz Medal which is awarded jointly by the four Founder Engineering Societies through a board composed of sixteen past presidents. In 1938 Paul D. Merica was given the award "for important contributions to the development of alloys for industrial uses" and in 1933 the distinction was given to D. C. Jackling "for notable industrial achievement in initiating mass production of copper from low-grade ores through application of engineering principles."

The demand for crude oil on the Pacific Coast during the year 1945. was so acute that the California crude supply had to be augmented by tank-car imports from the Texas and Rocky Mountain fields. Crude imports reached a high of 64,800 bbl. per day during June, with a total of 14,259,000 bbl. imported during the first 11 .months. The U. S. Navy also implemented the crude output from California pools by drilling and completing approximately 300 wells in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 (Elk Hills), from which an established production of 65,000. bbl. per day was reached in late February and maintained until Aug. 17, 1945, when it was reduced to its preprogram level of 15,000 bbl. per day. Even with the conclusion of the Pacific war on V-J day (Aug. 14), the military petroleum product requirements have permitted little material reduction in output of California crude to prewar rates. During the year, a total of 327-760,000 bbl. of crude was produced, or 19 per cent of the total crude production within the United States during the same period, as compared with 310,996,000 bbl. or 18.4 per cent of the nation's crude production in 1944.

The idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size had been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Masch-inenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cylinders of the Oechelhauser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. The engine was started in 1898, and, with a few improvements and alterations, is still working satisfactorily. This engine worked with astonishingly high effciency, considering the period. The investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at t,he Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word ''Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy," or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limitJ' has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.' In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

Elastic constants have been determined on single crystals of maximum-melting-temperature NiAl compound (50.6 at. pct Al) at 25°C. Temperature variations of Young&apos;s modulus in the three principal crystal directions between -150°C and +800°C exhibit no anomalies similar to those repovted for the isomor-phous compounds brass and AuCd. It is concluded that the ordered CsCl structure is stable throughout the temperuture range investigated NICKEL aluminide is a congruently melting inter-metallic compound of CsCl (B2) structure, stable over a rather wide composition range (40 to 54 pct Al). It exhibits a lattice-parameter maximum of a. = 2.883A at 50.6 pct 1,&apos; at which composition the excess aluminum atoms are randomly distributed on the vacant nickel sites;&apos; at higher nickel compositions the excess nickel atoms replace substitutionally in aluminum sites, while at higher aluminum compositions vacancies are present in the nickel sublattice.&apos; For compositions close to NiAl no significant variation in order has been observed at temperatures up to 900°C.3 At high nickel (65 pct) compositions the existence of a martensitic structural transformation has been reported.4 NiAl is isomorphous with the ordered B-brass structure and with the high-temperature structures of AuCd and TiNi alloys close to equiatomic composition. All of these exhibit anomalous elastic behavior as the temperature of their diffusionless transformation to lower-symmetry structures is approached.&apos;-&apos; This behavior has been explained as indicative of low stability of the CsCl structure in these compounds.8 The present paper reports the experimental determination of the elastic compliances of single-crystal NiA1. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. Polycrystalline NiAl was prepared by induction melting of carbonyl nickel and high-purity aluminum and casting into solid copper molds in gettered helium atmosphere. The castings thus produced were canned in mild steel and impact-extruded at 1100 to 1200°C to 38-in.diam rod. After the steel sheath was pickled off, the rods were converted to single crystals by repeated high-frequency satisfactorily produced the desired orientations in the form of crystals 38 in. diam by 8-12 in. long. These were subsequently center less-ground to 7 to 8 mm diam by 12 cm long, electropolished (in 80 pct methanol, 20 pct HzSO, at 25°C and 15 v), and their axial orientation determined to 1 deg by the Laue back-reflection technique. The rod dimensions were determined to 0.01 mm and the densities determined from geometrical dimensions and the weight of every specimen. The average density was 5.905 0.005 g per cu cm. 2) Elastic Data Measurements. Room-temperature elastic compliances Sii were obtained by determining to 0.1 cps the fundameGtal resonance frequencies in the longitudinal and torsional vibration modes. At these frequencies the following relations hold: E =p(2lfif =pvl= Sn- 2r[Sll- S12- -£„«] g -P(2iftf = pvf = (s<« - fr(sii - sw - ±s»y where vl and vt are the velocities, and f andft the resonance frequencies of the longitudinal and torsional waves, respectively; 1 is the length of the specimen, and r is the direction cosine factor—{cos2 a • cos2 0 + cos2 a . cos2 y + cos2 0 ¦ cos2 Y}. Given three crystals of orientations (loo), (110), and (111)) i.e., F = 0, 14, and 13, we can obtain six equations for the three unknown compliances, thus providing adequate internal check. Mode mixing can readily occur in the relatively long wavelength resonance utilized here. This could cause a significant error in the torsion wave velocities calculated from the apparent resonance frequenies. Therefore, throughout the present work, a method, described previosl,&apos; was used to ensure that no significant mode mixing took place at resonance. The apparatus used was originally designed for the Elastomat, Magnaflux Corp.. Chicago, 111. determination of flexural vibration resonance frequencies. At room temperature torsional vibration mode could be established by suitable positioning of the thin wires from the input and pick-up transducers, and longitudinal mode by cementing thin magnetic foils at the ends of the specimen, and inducing the vibration by means of electromagnetic transducers. Only flex-ural resonance frequencies could, however, be obtained reproducibly over the temperature range of -150 to 800°C. These data are considerably less accurate, the error in the modulus being estimated at -0.6 pct from the specimen dimensions and the room-temperature Poisson&apos;s ratio. The reproducibility of the resonance frequencies in repeat runs was, however, to better than l in 15,000, hence the relative elastic modulus error less than 0.02 pct. Therefore, the temperature variation of the principal Young&apos;s moduli obtained by flexural resonance, relative to room-temperature values, is believed to be satisfactorily accurate.

The following report is published for the information of the members Meetings. Two meetings for the reading and discussion of papers, etc., have been held during the year 1906-namely, the Ninetieth meeting, held February 21st to 24th at Bethlehem, Pa., and the Ninety-first meeting, held July 24th to 27th in London, England, in connection with the meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute. The proceedings of these meetings, including descriptions of the entertainments and excursions connected therewith, have already been published and distributed to the members of the Institute; the Bethlehem meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 9, May, 1906, pp. 497 to 508, and the London meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 12, November, 1906, pp. 809 to 908. The proceedings of the London meeting were published separately and distributed among the many individuals and concerns whose cordial friendship and delightful hospitality contributed so largely to the success of the visits in London and environs and the excursions in England, Scotland and Germany. At the Bethlehem meeting, 37 papers and discussions were presented and the names of 198 members and guests were regis¬tered at the Institute headquarters ; this number, however, does not represent all who were present at the sessions and excur¬sions. At the London meeting, 26 papers and discussions were presented, not including 5 of the papers and discussions read before the Iron and Steel Institute at the joint session with the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which, by a mutual agreement between the Councils of the two Institutes, have been selected to be republished in the Bi-Monthly Bulletin and Transactions of the Institute. The number of members and guests of the two Institutes registered at the London headquarters was 908, and of this number 131 were from America. This list does not include the names of all who

AT Josephtown, Pa., on the south hank of the Ohio River about thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is the Josephtown electrothermic zinc smelter, which operates as a custom smelter receiving both domestic and foreign concentrates. Constructed in 1930, the plant was designed to produce zinc oxide and to process 124 tons per day of zinc concentrate obtained mainly from the Company&apos;s New York State mines. Zinc condensing equipment was developed in conjunction with the St. Joe electrothermic. furnace and commercial production of zinc metal started in 1936. Expansion of the plant and equipment during 1939 and 1940 brought the processing. capacity to upwards of 300 tons of concentrate per day; and the plant operated at peak capacity during the war years, earning the Army-Navy "E" award and three subsequent stars. A postwar plant expansion is now under way, designed to increase the capacity to 500 tons per day of concentrate, with an estimated daily production of 160 tons of zinc metal of various grades, about 100 tons of zinc oxide, and 425 tons of sulphuric acid as major products.

APPROXIMATELY 26 percent of the total ore production to date from the largest single deposit of copper-bearing material in the world was mined during the war years, 1942 to 1945, at Chile Exporation Company&apos;s great open-pit mine at Chuquicamata, Chile. About 18 percent of the total waste removed during the life of the mine was handled in the same period. The total of ore and waste represents approximately 24 percent of the total material that has been excavated from the pit. This is more than was removed in the first fourteen years of operation from 1914 through 1927. The pit at Chuquicamata is 17/8 miles long, 1/2 mile wide, and has a present vertical extent of 817 ft between the top of the highest bench and the lowest bench being worked. However, when

1. INTRODUCTION. THE general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a "coal-breaker." This name is misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only in the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for domestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

E. OROWAN*—I observed the phenomenon of jerky yielding many years ago with zinc25 and cadmium single crystals. A significant point was that the jerks occurred not only when the stress was raised but also (sometimes, after a pause of many minutes during which no trace of creep was observable) at constant stress. The phenomenon may be closely linked with the inertia of the testing machine and of the specimen, although the inertia alone cannot account for it. If, during the test, the resistance of the material to plastic deformation suddenly diminishes while the applied force remains constant, a sudden deformation follows until the yield stress has risen, by strain hardening, to the level of the applied stress (= the value of the previous "upper yield point."). When this is reached, the rate of deformation has attained a maximum value because, up to this moment, the applied force was higher than the plastic resistance of the specimen, and the difference was used for accelerating the moving parts of machine and specimen. The kinetic energy accumulated is now transformed into plastic work by further deformation; that is. the deformation overshoots the point at which the plastic resistance equals the applied static force. When the kinetic energy has been used up, therefore, we are left with a specimen the yield stress of which is higher than the applied stress, and no further deformation can occur (apart from a little creep) until either the applied stress has been raised to the new yield stress level, or the yield stress has fallen by thermal recovery to the level of the applied stress. While this occurs, a new upper yield point can develop, for example, by precipitation.26

EUROPE continued to be unsettled, financially, commercially and socially. October opened with Germany in a state of turmoil following the Government&apos;s cessation of passive resistance to the French and Belgians. In many places there were riots with much bloodshed. In Bavaria a military dictator-ship was set up in order to keep peace. In the meanwhile France continued in an uncom-promising position.. Great Britain, having been diplo-matically discredited, disappeared from any prominence in the international picture. Under the constraint of circumstances the policy of deflation in Great. Britain was temporarily abandoned. Perhaps no other course was open, for with declining trade and heavily reduced revenue, and no chance for cutting expenses propor-tionately, a check to deflation comes of its own accord. The effects of this should become manifest in the course of a few months and should appear in the form of an improved margin between the prices for commodities and the wage costs in producing them. About Oct. 20 an effort was made to set up the Rheinland as a separate republic. On Oct. 26 were published communications from Lord Curzon to Secre-tary Hughes and the latter&apos;s reply. In these Lord Curzon drew attention to the gravity of the situation in Europe and expressed the hope that France might listen to renewed suggestions for a general inquiry. Secretary Hughes promised American cooperation, in this, with the reservation that the question of inter-national debts should not enter into the situation. In the latter part of October there were military mutinies and disorders in Greece, which resulted in the reestablishment of martial law by order of Col. Plas-tiras, who is virtually the dictator of Greece. The incipient revolt was promptly crushed.

FIVE of the geologic horizons that yield oil in other parts of the world are represented in Brazil; namely, the Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian, Cretaceous, and Tertiary. Thus far, the first two have shown no, evidences of being oil bearing within Brazilian territory. Not enough exploring has been done to permit trustworthy comparisons of the relative importance of the Permian, Cretaceous, and Tertiary as oil-bearing horizons in this country. The most important, indeed almost the only, information available relates to the locations of the areas and to the structural features of the several horizons. The theories regarding the physical conditions under which these rocks were laid down, however, I regard of the utmost importance. PERMIAN Rocks of Permian age cover an enormous area in Brazil, extending from Rio Grande do Sul to Maranhão on the north, and to Matto Grosso on the west. These Permian rocks in many places are known to include oil-bearing shales and in some locations contain small veins of gilsonite. The geologic map of Brazil shows that the Permian area is widely distributed, but there is considerable doubt about &apos;the origin of some of the rocks:. Some of the lower Permian beds in southern Brazil contain marine fossils, but in Minas no fossils have as yet been found in them, and in Bahia, at only one locality have a few Permian plants been found. Indications of oil have been found in the states of São-Paulo, Paraná, and elsewhere farther south, but wells drilled in the Permian of São Paulo near the Morro do Bofete did not find oil. One well has been started, by the Brazilian government, in the Permian of Paraná near Marechal Mallet, close to latitude 26° south, but thus far oil has not been found.
