(communication to the Secretary*):—While this paper is primarily intended as a discussion of Mr. Riter's, I think it will be best to indicate my criticism by describing my own field-methods. It has been my experience that, for ordinary work, the regular transit-book is to be preferred to the card-system for recording notes. This is specially true when computations in the field are required, for it is then necessary to have at hand the total latitudes, departures, ancl elevations. Moreover, the transit-book is easier to carry and manipulate in wet or cramped places, and is not as liable to damage as the loose leaf or card. I use a regular transit-book in the field, and then copy my notes, sketches, etc., in an o5ce-book, entering also the latitudes, departures, and other reductions. These values are then copied into the field-book, securing a duplicate record, in case either book should be lost or mislaid. In the field-book, the notes are entered on the left-hand, and the sketches and remarks on the right-hand page. The next two pages are left blank for the latitudes, departures, bearings, reduced distances, etc. Of course, the notes for the different parts of the mine are entered in the field-book in the order in which they are surveyed; but in the they are entered systematically. It has been my experience that the system of keeping notes used by a surveyor, is particularly adapted to the needs and temperament of the individual. Otherwise, he would not be

it is an established fact that the collecting properties of xanthates and anionic collectors are dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length. This is ascribed to the greater adsorption densities caused by increasing the xanthate chain length. As batch flotation tests showed similar trends for amines, an investigation of the adsorbing properties of amines was undertaken. Because earlier investigations showed adsorption densities for dodecylamine salts on quartz varying as much as 20 times under apparently similar conditions,1-4 it was decided to make a survey of the changes in adsorption density due to the drying conditions of the quartz. Unit coal calorific values represent a close approach to pure coal values; they possess characteristics theoretically inherent in the latter values. They are essentially uniform in the same seam for areas possessing essentially uniform geological environment. They are higher in older than in younger coals in most cases, and in deeper than in shallower coals. In general, they display characteristics closely in accordance with expectation assuming that they are essentially indices of rank. Because it possesses these characteristics, the unit coal value is essentially a standard value, characteristic of each bed in each local region. Hence it can be used as a basis for determining the accuracy of results in newly established laboratories, or when new equipment is installed, or in checking the results of different laboratories, or even in determining the character of coal as mined or prepared if ash, moisture and sulfur values are known. DISCUSSION (A. C. Callen presiding) R. P. Hunson,§ Wayland, Ky. (written discussion).—One of the interesting observatioris made by the authors is that there is a more or less definite correlation between unit coal calorific values and the geological environment of the coal bed. It is very interesting to note that, in general, the unit B.t.u. value increases with the increase in the probable original depth of burial, and that each seam tends to increase in calorific value toward the areas of diastrophic instability. It is generally conceded that Parr's formula, for determining unit coal values, is about as accurate as any formula subsequently proposed for the same purpose. In his formula, Professor Parr did not differentiate between the sulfur present as iron pyrites and that present as organic sulfur. However, the practical application of the formula has shown that this is of little consequence. Magnitude and Econonmic Importance THE magnitude and economic importance of the problem of correctly valuing natural-gas leaseholds become evident when we consider that: (a) Natural gas is handled in 55 per cent. of the gas distributing plants in the United States. (b) Present known natural-gas acreage forms 47 per cent. of the total known mineral-land acreage in the United States. (c) Five acres of land are now required to protect and maintain continuous service to each of the 2,000,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in the United States. (d) The cost of acquiring and maintaining this acreage of an expendible resource represents a substantial part of the cost of the natural-gas service to the consumer. (e) "The right of a citizen by means of his ownership of or his mining leases on land to draw gas from beneath its surface is property and sometimes valuable property."1 A large number of other court decisions have established the basic legal principle that the right to drill for gas within a given area constitutes an interest in the land itself, and is necessarily an exclusive property right.

Demand fob Motor Fuel, 1936 During the year just closed the domestic demand for gasoline exceeded 481 million barrels. This compares with 434,810,000 bbl. consumed during 1935 and indicates an increase of 10.46 per cent. Export shipments amounted to 27,831,000 bbl. while in 1935 they totaled 30,613,000 bbl. Total demand, therefore, was 509,422,000 bbl., or 9.16 per cent above the 465,423,000 bbl. of 1935. Following are the figures for several years: Already we are supplying gasoline domestically and as foreign shipments at a rate almost 25 per cent greater than our low level of 1933. Before giving figures for 1937, I should like to spend a moment or two in discussion of gasoline inventories, from the point of view of minimum working stocks and other requirements and of probable actual levels. INTRODUCTION The overall importance of the minerals industry during the next 20 years was highlighted In "The Global 200 Report to the President" (Barney, 1982) in the following terms: "The industrial and agricultural processes that are taken for granted today would be severely disrupted of any one of dozens of critical minerals ceased to be available in dependable, reasonably priced supply. Supply in turn has become highly energy intensive and international In scope ...... because resources are not uniformly distributed geographically, political considerations (also) become an Important determinant of price and trade patterns." In attempting to determine Australia’s contribution of bauxite raw materials to the world of the future, this paper necessarily also concerns itself with the alumina and aluminium industry to which it supplles the raw material. It is an industry which is energy intensive, International in scope and heavily influenced by political considerations. The aluminium industry has shown a remarkably rapid growth during the past 20 years (Fig. 1).

The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

Although significant phosphate mining activity has occurred in four western states-Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming-southeastern Idaho contains the largest, most easily mineable reserves, and mining has focused there. More than half of the western phosphate field's economic reserves are within a 32 x 96-km (20 x 60-mile) rectangle bounded by Montpelier, Idaho, on the south, Soda Springs on the west, and Grays Lake on the east. A large amount of this land lies within the boundaries of the Caribou National Forest.

Every one having practical experience in making heating-gas knows how much room there is for improvement,, in order to avoid not only the production of poor gas, when good gas is most wanted, but also the waste due to burning gas on top of the fuel-bed, and the loss of both time and fuel in cleaning.* The producer which I have recently designed, and with which I am now experimenting with every prospect of success, at the oreroasting kilns at Chester furnace, is intended to remove these difficulties as far as possible, and at the same time to be continuous in operation. I have not had it at work long enough to get beyond the stage of experiment; hence, I will only at this time explain it in a general way, and illustrate it with a drawing, promising a more elaborate paper if it becomes the practical success I anticipate. Studies relating to the behavior of coal toward oxygen may have for their purpose the determination of the fundamental factors that underlie spontaneous combustion, weathering and deterioration, and the general topic of storage, as well as those properties that have to do with the underlying principles of carbonization. There is also involved the possibility of developing information relating to the constitution of coal, or at least the chemical properties inherent in the type substances of which the coal is composed. It is the purpose here to record certain results bearing on this latter idea of the chemical properties that characterize the main constituents of bituminous coal. The avidity of freshly mined coal for oxygen has long been known. What happens to the coal or to the oxygen is not so clear. Is the oxygen absorbed or chemically combined, and what are the conditions as to time, temperature, texture, or components that are most involved in the phenomenon? If we subject a weighed quantity of coal maintained at a constant temperature to a current of oxygen, we may obtain three factors of interest—the weight increase of the coal, the weight of the water, and the weight of the carbon dioxide formed in the reactions involved at that

Rock response to heating depends on properties of rock material and varies widely between different rock types. By dissipating energy, surface melting limits rapid heating and fragmentation of rocks achieved by surface heating methods. This study advances a concept of rock fragmentation by rapid internal heating of a localized inner volume of rock. The working of the method to achieve fragmentation of rocks (Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt) having poor response to surface heating is analyzed. Experimental data on elevated temperature rock properties required for the study are presented. Based on the properties of test rocks, a high frequency (50 MHz) dielectric heating method of generating localized internal heating was selected for experimental study. The test rocks were fragmented without melting under localized heating below 600ºC. The heated volume required for fragmentation was observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume. A practical application of the method for in situ fragmentation of rocks is suggested.

THE pressure distribution in a producing oil or gas reservoir has been obtained mathematically in a limited number of special cases where the boundary of the reservoirs are simple geometric figures with the wells conveniently located within them. Using some of the previous work as a basis, it can be proved that a number of additional problems of pressure distribution can be solved by use of soap film. This method is particu-larly applicable to a reservoir drained by a number of wells, or to a reservoir of irregular shape, or to both. Since this method obtains the pressure distribution, it also establishes the drainage boundaries of the wells. This paper derives the analogy between the equation representing the pressure distribution in a reservoir and the equation of the deflected membrane. It also describes the apparatus and the method of operation. The experimental method is employed to solve a problem whose mathe-matical solution is known and the results compared. These are found to be in good agreement. The method is applicable to any homogeneous liquid, compressible or incompressible, or to a gas, flowing in a reservoir of uniform thickness, permeability and porosity. The flow state may be either the steady state or the transient state wherein the density or pressure of the fluid in the reservoir declines at a constant rate.

Marine black-shale samples of Paleozoic age in the western United States that exceed 10 wt % organic carbon contain as much as 5000 ppm vanadium, 5000 ppm molybdenum, 1300 ppm nickel, 600 pprn cobalt, 16 ppm silver, 11,700 ppm chromium, 18,800 pprn zinc, 280 pprn cadmium, and 350 ppm selenium. Depositional set- tings include: (I) continental-rise and marginal- ocean basins, (2) continental-shelf and foreland basins, and (3) cratonic-platform embayments. Most of these metalliferous organic-rich shales have not been examined for resources because rapid weathering and poor exposures preclude easy sampling of unoxidized rock necessary to determine actual concentration and residence of indigenous metals. Generally, when interval thickness is considered, the marine black shales of Paleozoic age in the western United States are richer in metals than marine upper Paleozoic black shales in the eastern United States.

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

The Kotchkar mining-district, known as the Kotchkar System, is situated in the Orenburg government, in Eastern Russia, in the great plateau- or steppe-country immediately adjacent to the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains. Its longer dimension is north and south about 27 miles, while in the widest (northern) portion the distance across is 22 miles. The district lies 40 miles southwest of Miass, a station of the Trans-Siberian railway, and half-way between this village and that of Troitsk. It contains also the not inconsiderable settlements of Kotchkar and Eosobrodskoit., the last a Kossak town. So far as explored, the district is known to contain from 300 to 400 auriferous veins. ? Although the topography is generally of an exceedingly flat character, the country is traversed by several small rivulets running from west to east, and flowing into the Sanarka and Kamenka rivers. Since 1844 placers have been worked in the district, but it was not until 1867 that veins were discovered, and these have been worked only since the impoverishment of the alluvial deposits. The deposit with which this paper especially deals is known as the Ouspensky mine, one of twelve owned by MM. de Zelenkoff & Cie., five of which are situated in the Kotchkar System. An opportunity of visiting this mine was afforded the writers, in eonnection with an excursion of the VII. session of the International Geological Congress; held in Russia during the summer of 1897. Maysville, Kentucky, is the location of Dravo Lime company's new 9 070 mt(10,000 tons) per day limestone mine and 2 727 mt (3000 tons) per day calcination plant. This complex has been designed as a unit, and capitalizes on recent technological advances. Geologically the Dravo facility is.located on the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, with the high calcium limestone being found at a depth of approximately 274 m (900 ft). A systems approach has been employed in designing and equipping the mine. This allows for maximum production while maintaining flexibility and versatility. All hydraulic drilling, large LHD equipment, and an extendable mine conveyor system are utilized in a five-part mining cycle. A modular concept modifies the room and pillar system to optimize ventilation. The limestone is calcined in three 5.18 x 61.87 m (17 x 203 ft) KVS rotary kilns with a design capacity of 909 mt (1000 tons) per day of lime per kiln. The kilns are coal fired and equipped with preheaters. Lime storage is provided by three 57 m (186 ft) high concrete silos with a combined capacity of 40 909 mt.

THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.
