The Island of Trinidad has much the same geological history as the continent of South America. There are present in this area Cretaceous, Tertiary and Quaternary rocks, which were deposited in a basin covering eastern Venezuela and Trinidad, very much as rocks of the same age were deposited in the Maracaibo Basin in western Venezuela. Along the north coast there are metamorphosed and semimetamorphosed Cretaceous rocks which are found as semicrystalline limestone, schists and quartzites, etc. Both the Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks are petroliferous and are responsible for the production of oil in Trinidad and eastern Venezuela. The geological column in the oil-bearing region of Trinidad is shown below.

The Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch joint venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

Public Law (PL) 95-87 contains explicit demands for land use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land use plans; however, they are not well integrated. Accommodation to these planning requirements affords an opportunity to create better links among local land use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take a more positive interest in local land use plans and in resource inventories. States should coder handing down to local government the responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Tests carried out in the Department of Mining and Metallurgy at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology indicate that high density rigid foams may, with the addition of suitable fillers, have structural properties comparable with concrete. Since polyurethanes have other useful properties that are unique to the foams, they have great potential value for both mining and civil engineering applications. Polyurethane, a generic term for a wide variety of closely related foam compounds, suggests rather misleadingly that foams are simple polymers of the urethane monomer ethyl carbamate (H,NCOOC,H,) . Polyurethane foams certainly do contain urethane groups, but these need not necessarily preponderate. Other reactive groups may be, and usually are, present so that the final polyurethane product will most likely contain, in addition to urethane groups, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon, ester, ether, amide and urea groups.

A survey of the role of the United Nations Special Fund in the field of mining and metallurgy. An aircraft, manned by Canadians and crammed with modern scientific instruments, crisscrosses over the dense rainforests of tropical Surinam at Y4 kilometer intervals, prospecting for valuable mineral deposits. Mill head samples of Burmese lead and zinc ores arrive at a Colorado laboratory for analysis and experimentation to determine the best milling and ore-dressing techniques. At the new Institute for Applied Geology in Manila, Philippine mining engineers receive instructions from a Finnish petrologist. These scenes illuminate only a fraction of the exciting work in the mining and metallurgical fields being carried out by the United Nations Special Fund.

The ores treated by the Canada Consolidated Gold Mining Company at Deloro, Ontario, have been described in a paper read before the Institute in 1881. They are gold-bearing arsenical sulphurets of iron (mispickel), carrying the theoretical proportions of 42 per cent. of arsenic, 20 per cent. of sulphur, and the remainder iron. The gangue is quartz, calc spar, and some talcose, slaty rock, evidently resulting from the decomposition of the wall-rock, which on each side of the veins is syenitic granite. The treatment of the ore consists of: 1. Crushing. 2. Concentrating.

This part of the symposium deals with the problems encountered by the consumer of nonferrous scrap, that is, the smelter and refiner who melts the selected scrap items and produces foundry ingots of specified compositions or billets for rolling or extrusion in nonferrous mills. IRON and steel scrap has again become page one news, as it was during the war. To many this is anomalous because the common concept is that the theaters of war are literally paved with scrap as the by-product of war damage and abandoned materiel. To an extent this is true, the bottleneck being the ferreting out and transportation of this scrap. While you as consumers of the electric-furnace grades of scrap-the premium grades-are concerned primarily in only one segment of the scrap market, I believe you ill be interested in a general discussion of the market with subsequent funneling down to your specialty.

Webster's Third New International Dictionary defines new in part as "having been seen or known but for a short time although perhaps existing before." It has recently become fashionable to talk about the new life for old "King Coal," and how we will have to double or even triple our coal production by 1985, or how the US will become energy-independent by 1980. Since coal represents over 80% of our proven energy reserve, the nation will turn to coal as a savior in our time of energy crisis, so goes the argument.

Many of the proposed techniques for calculating the reliability of rock slopes utilize Monte Carlo simulation. Monte Carlo approaches are attractive because they provide means of solving probabilistic problems with deterministic algorithms. One disadvantage shared by all simulation-based stability analyses is that they assume all the random variables are independently distributed. The paper focuses on the independence assumption and examines the effect of correlation on the probability of failure. In particular it considers the influence of possible (albeit hypothetical) correlation between joint attitudes [(8)] and joint friction angles [($)]. The study indicates that neglecting correlation can introduce significant errors into the reliability computations. With a modest positive correlation between [8] and [$] the error can lead to a 100% overestimate of the probability of failure.

Under the title " Hysteromorphous" it is proposed to include deposits which have been formed from original deposits by the influences of the surface-region. The term Hysteromorphous—later-formed—has been used by Prof. Posepny, of Vienna, to distinguish secondary from primary deposits and is more comprehensively applicable than the terms or designations hitherto used for the same thing.

Surface coal mining productivity in the US and Illinois has declined since 1969. The US Department of Energy conducted an analysis in 1980 of the causes of declining productivity in different states. This paper presents a detailed analysis of changes in overall productivity and productivity in different functions, such as overburden preparation and stripping, reclamation, and coal handling, from 1970 to 1982. Statisical analysis techniques, including multiple regression were used in the study.

GATES, Salt Lake City, Utah (communication to the Secretary*).-The writer is delighted by the results shown in Mr. Bell's paper, which prove in an experimental way different from that followed by the writer' that "the work clone in crushing is proportional to the surface exposed by the operation," per Rittinger's Law. Mr. Bell's work was all clone in commercial types of crushing machines, while my work was clone in a testing machine; his work represents fully one hundred times the expenditure and time that my work represented; a great number of tests were made by his organization to determine single points, while I was obliged to depend on the general trend of a curve for results; we agree absolutely that "Kick's law," for which Mr. Stadler was sponsor, does not apply to rock crushing. While my work indicated the reliability of Rittinger's theory, Mr. Bell's work clearly establishes the reliability and makes it Rittinger's law.

This paper describes a computer program which calculates material balances for complex steady-state material flow circuits encountered in mineral processing. The program determines mass flows in the various process streams of a flowsheet from multicomponent analytical data obtained from samples of the streams. The program, Metallurgical Balance System (MBS), has been used extensively in treating Pilot plant test data, in production evaluation and control, and in plant design. The program performs well even on ill-conditioned data. Input to the program is easily accomplished by unskilled personnel and the output appears in well-formatted tables.

Aclivilies of magnesium in liquid Alg-Si alloys have been delermined between 5 and 60 at. pcl Si, close to the melling point of Mg2Si, by an improved isopieslic melhod. Silicon specinrens, held in alumina crucibles and graplrile conlainevs of special design, were healed in a letrlpevalure gvadient and equilibrated with mag-nesilcrrl rapor in a closed lilanium system. The ther-madynamic Junctions were calculated and compared with the thermodyuamic properties of the other three mg- Gvoup IVB systems. Lattice paramelers of three Mg2X compounds were measured. The bonding in the Mg2X compounds is largely covalent with small and uarying amounts of metallic and ionic conlvibutions. The Mg-Si phase diagram1 has one congruent melting compound, Mg2Si, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and very limited terminal solid solubilities. Little information is available on the thermodynamic properties of this system. The free energy of formation of Mg2Si has been determined by the Knudsen cell technique2 in the range 572" to 680oC, by the transportation method3 between 858" and 950oC, and by the electromotive-force method4 in the range 400o to 600°C. Kubaschewski and villa5 and caulfield6 have measured the heat of formation of Mg2Si. An electromotive-force study of magnesium-rich liquid alloys was recently published by Sryvalin el al.7 The present investigation was undertaken to complete a general survey of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVB systems, i.e., Mg-Pb,a9,Mg-Sn,10,11 mg-Ge,12and Mg-Si. An isopiestic technique, previously developed for similar measurements on liquid Mg-sn11 and Mg-Ge alloys,12 was modified for the Mg-Si system. Specimens of the nonvolatile component, silicon, were contained in dense alumina crucibles placed inside covered graphite crucibles which were heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known vapor pressure. The alumina crucibles prevented contact between the highly corrosive liquid Mg-Si alloys and graphite. The graphite cruci- bles effectively preserved the high-temperature equilibrium composition of the liquid alloys containing highly volatile magnesium on termination of the experiments during the quench to room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silicon of semiconductor-grade purity (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Brevard, N.C.) and 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) were used. Graphite crucibles with press-fitted lids were machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The alumina crucibles had a purity of 99.7+ pct (Triangle RR grade, Morganite, Inc., Long Island City, N.Y.). In preliminary runs the liquid alloys were contained in graphite crucibles following the exact procedure developed for the Mg-Ge system.'2 These runs failed due to appreciable reaction between the molten Mg-Si alloys and graphite, and the results have been discarded. The procedure was then modified and the Mg-Si alloys were subsequently held in alumina crucibles. For most of the runs alumina crucibles of known weight and approximately 6.3 mm ID, 12.5 mm height, 1.0 mm wall thickness were loaded with weighed amounts of silicon and encapsuled in tightly covered weighed graphite crucibles 5/16 in. ID, 2 in. helght, 3/32 in. wall thickness). The graphite crucibles were machined from rods which were 85 pct of the theoretical density. These crucibles were therefore sufficiently porous so as to permit magnesium vapor to effuse through the silicon under the experimental conditions of approximately 970O to 1220°C and 1 day equilibration time. However, negligible magnesium was lost from the crucible during the quench due to the slow effusion rate through the pores of the graphite. The inner alumina crucible prevented the liquid alloys from contacting the graphite, and the very tightly fitting graphite crucible lids served to retain any magnesium vaporizing from the alloys inside the crucibles during the quenching step.12 The loaded silicon-alumina-graphite cells were positioned, one above another, on a 16-in.-long titanium thermocouple well and tied securely to the titanium tube with thin molybdenum wires held in grooves around the circumference of the graphite crucibles. A thin (0.005-in.) molybdenum strip prevented contact between the graphite crucibles and the titanium. This assembly was lowered into a titanium reaction tube (la in. ID, 16 in. long, $ in. wall thickness) closed on one end which contained a 11/2-in.-long cylinder of magnesium at the bottom. The inner titanium thermocouple well was positioned eccentrically in the large tube because of the eccentric mounting of the cells on the well. ATHOUGH there are signs of improvement in the lead industry, conditions are still far from what we have been accustomed to call normal. There has been little to stim¬ulate research and those responsible for the finances of the companies have been inclined to discourage expenditures except where need was urgent or the prospect for immediate returns bright. In spite of this fact, improvements have been developed here and there which will be available as business conditions become adjusted. No publicity is allowed at present. The rising price of silver has had a tendency to increase the production of lead from argentiferous ores but the greatest interest continues to be in the secondary field. Practically all lead plants situated near large centers of population are treating scrap materials, particularly battery plates, the quantity of which is increasing with the improvement in automobile sales.
