The authors have shown much ingenuity in their experimental work. However, I wish to point out that anelasticity theory tells us that we must be cautious when we use pulse methods for measurements which are to be correlated with knowledge of static stress-strain behavior. To those working in the mineral industry, the flowsheet is a familiar and valuable tool, seldom used, unfortunately, to its fullest advantage. As with so many other commonplace and simple items, there is little or no attempt to expand on the forms, and types of flowsheets. A flowsheet or flow diagram may be defined as an illustration showing circulation of the ore stream in a concentrating plant. It may be further described as an explanatory graphic design or picture. A flowsheet is obtained by interpreting the metallurgists' research and ore test data, usually with some adjustments to suit the economies of the project. It brings together, in compact form, information from a number of sources.

HAVING described and taught you the method of assaying silver for gold in the preceding chapter, and therein having proceeded in the order and Drover wav followed in the working of quantities of gold and silver, I could have fled this task of describing to you the first part of parting. The relation between man-hours of labor and production may be correlated for any industry, and already it has been widely used in piecework studies. It is not in general use as yet for recording labor efficiency of an enterprise or an industry. An exception to this is the Cement Institute, which tabulates the man-hours used in each operation and thus gets the total man-hours per barrel of cement. The writer knows of one steel company that keeps a complete record of man-hours for every operation from mining the ore to finishing the product. No doubt many others find the information useful, and such a study could be of value to the mineral industries.

Bellows Connector Fabricated of chemically inert Teflon, the new bellows type connector has many pipe line applications where vibration, expansion and electrolysis exist in the handling of corrosive liquids or gases and solvents. The new connector is electrically non-conductive, flexible even at 94°F and as strong as 480°F as at 70°F, according to the manufacturer. This bellows connector serves as a [ ] vibration dampener as well as an expansion joint and connects misaligned couplings and insulates flanges electrically. End flanges of the joint are French-type envelope gaskets made integral with the joint for easy assembly between companion flanges and a tight, leak-proof seal on installation. Circle No. 1

THE hot working of chromium was first reported by Hunter and Jones; who used small pellets of the material obtained by the reduction of chromium chloride with sodium. Later, the working of chromium at 600° to 1100°C was reported by Marden and Rich,2 and at 1250°C by Kroll3 The hot rolled material3 had a Brinell hardness of about 150 (62.5 kg, 2.5 mm ball, 1 min) and was brittle at room temperature. Except for that associated with hardness indentations, no plastic flow in chromium at room temperature has been reported to the author's knowledge. Studies described here have shown slip markings in chromium after deformation at room temperature.

The Ten Section field is approximately 10 miles southwest of Bakers-field, Kern County, Calif. (Fig. 1). There is no surface evidence of the existence of the Ten Section structure, which subsurface exploration has shown to be a gently folded, anticlinal dome. Regionally, this field occurs as a fold in the deeper beds of the gently rolling floor of the San Joaquin Valley. It is on the easterly slope of the valley, its position with relation to the axis of this syncline not having been determined. Kaiser Sees Bright Future for Jamaica Kaiser Aluminum Co. has a big stake in the British West Indies, the Island of Jamaica in particular. There, Kaiser is busy developing one of the most promising bauxite finds in recent years. The $12 million operation was officially opened in February. Facilities have a rating of an annual capacity of 2 million tons and will supply Kaiser plants with ore for years. The ore comes across the Gulf of Mexico, up the Mississippi to stockpiles at Baton Rouge. The stockpile at Baton Rouge would throw many an old river boat skipper for a loss. Where no mountain once existed now stands a man-made bluff of bauxite, known as Bauxite Peak.

The eastern coal-field of Kentucky covers about 11,000 square miles of territory. On the east and south it extends to the State lines of West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. Its western boundary may be roughly described as an irregular line beginning at the Ohio river, in Greenup county, thence through the counties of Carter, Menifee, Wolfe, Estill, Jackson, Rockcastle, Pulaski and Wayne, to the Tennessee line. The need to grind volcanic-sedimentary ores very finely (d80 < 20 µm) so as to liberate Pb, Zn, and Cu sulfides from their pyritic gangue causes difficulties in selective flotation. The pyrite, which accounts for 70-80% of the mineral content, is insufficiently depressed by the usual pH and NaCN techniques. To determine better depressing methods, the surface evolution of pyrite during flotation was followed by ESCA spectroscopy to compare the stability range in the Eh-pH diagram. Surface iron hydroxide was formed, which is the main pyrite-depressing factor. NaCN appears to play a more restrictive part, since no ferricyanides were detected, except for very small amounts at pH 7.

There are no formulas that guarantee success when obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often represent the most controversial issues faced by a community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and, probably most important, fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. The public hearing process is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately, not designed for resolution of disputes. It is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day there will be a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive, and unmanageable community conflicts.

Occidental&apos;s in situ retorting process for oil shale has many advantages over the conventional, underground mine and surface retort. Only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported outside where it blends with the oil-shale talus found in the area. Spent shale is retained underground without surface disposal problems. The process consumes no water from outside sources. Noise and dust levels are kept at a minimum. As many of the facilities as possible are located underground. More oil is produced from a given area than conventional surface processing. Additional energy can be recovered by using conventional turbines to generate electrical power of magnitude of three to four times required by the operation.

Since the days of the infancy of metallurgical industries, slags of various kinds have been accumulating. Until a comparatively recent date hardly any employment had been found for these waste products, which have had, consequently, little or no value. An exception to this rule is the basic Bessemer slag, the value of which has become universally recognized. It is to-day one of the standard fertilizers of the world, and a price of from $15 to $20 a ton is considered reasoiable for the ground slag, which, especially in Germany, finds a ready market as fast as it is prepared. Approximately 33% of the silver in the Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited is lost to the tailings and an additional 11% to the zinc concentrate for which no payment is received. 38% to 44% of this lost silver is carried by tetrahedrite, 28% by galena and 28% to 34% by a third silver carrier. The silver minerals acanthite and pyrargyrite have been identified in mill products and hence these are suggested as the principal third silver carrier(s) accounting for 13 to 20% of the silver in Brunswick ore. About 24% of this third silver carrier assemblage is lost to the zinc concentrate and 52% to concentrator tailings.
