Discussion of the paper of Prof. Albert Sauveur and, G. A. Reinhardt, presented at the Cleveland meeting, October, 1912, and printed in Bulletin No. 71, November, 1912, pp. 1335 to 1341. ROBERT R. ABBOTT, Cleveland, Ohio :-The possibilities of the commercial application of the facts brought out in this paper have been the subject of many experiments by me during the past four years. It will be well to call attention to several facts having a commercial bearing upon the problem: (1) The lower critical temperature (Ac) of a 3.5 per cent. nickel-steel of low carbon (say 0.20 per cent.) content is about 710° C. This is not lowered to any extent by increasing its carbon content by carbonizing,. By this I mean that a steel with Act occurring at 710°, must, after carbonizing, be heated above this temperature before quenching in order to make it hard. This is not contrary to Guillet's diagram, although at first thought it may seem so, due to a confusion of the Act and the Ar1, points. His diagram merely gives the physical condition of the steel upon slow cooling. Now a steel of 1.20 per cent. of carbon and 3 per cent. of nickel (point " B " of the diagram) may be martensitic upon slow cooling from three causes: (a) Its Ar1 point is below the normal atmospheric temperatures. (b) The time element is so important that the change from martensite to pearlite and cementite does not have time to occur even with this slower rate of cooling. We of course know that nickel has the tendency of retarding this change. (c) A combination of the above two causes. (2) With increasing nickel content the ability of steel to absorb carbon decreases. (3) Many carbonized nickel-steels show a martensitic. structure upon air-cooling, and yet ire so soft that they are of no commercial value.

THE Morenci concentrator of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is a part of the project that was completed after five years had been spent in development of the open-pit mine, equipment and process testing in the former No. 6 concentrator, and construction of the reduction works. The reduction works, of which the concentrator is a part, is about a mile and a quarter southeast of Morenci, on the highway that leads up Morenci Canyon. The concentrator has a nominal capacity for the treatment of 45,000 tons of ore daily. The original plant, which has a rated capacity of 25,000 tons of ore daily and is now in its fifth year of operation, began production on Jan. 30, 1942. The addition, to increase the capacity 8o pct, began operation on Dec. 1, 1943. The equipment of the original plant has been described in MINING AND METALLURGY (May 1942). No changes in equipment were recommended for installation in the concentrator extension and only one major change, forced by a shortage of maintenance labor, has since been made. Metallurgical treatment has been altered in some ways as experiments progressed and as labor and economic conditions dictated. No complete description of the operation of the concentrator has been published, so this paper will record such operating and equipment changes as have been necessary, the operating methods that have been developed and the metallurgical results that have been obtained. Descriptions are given in the order of the processes with a flowsheet and an equipment list of each process for convenient reference. The questions asked by engineer visitors have guided the detail in which operation and maintenance are described. During the period Jan. 30, 1942 to Sept. 1, 1946, ore milled has totaled 43,595,253 dry tons, from which 1,643,885 tons of concentrate have been made, containing an indicated production of 783,164,809 lb of copper. The principal results obtained in operation of the concentrator during the years 1942 to 1945, inclusive, and to Sept. 1, 1946 are shown in Table 1. A graphic general flowsheet of the plant is given in Fig I. ORE The Morenci ore that is now being treated is a medium-hard monzonite porphyry in which the principal sulphide minerals are chalcocite and pyrite. A minor amount of covellite is present. Chalcopyrite and bornite have been observed under the microscope. The chalcocite occurs mainly as a coating on pyrite. Some of the coatings are so thick that the pyrite presents the appearance of being an inclusion in chalcocite. Some are less than one micron thick and are barely visible at 500 diameters magnification of a polished cross section. Some chalcocite is present as a dissemination in the gangue. Various oxidized copper minerals are present as a result of oxidation in place but they represent a minor proportion of the copper minerals of the ore body. Oxidation

A system of differential equations describing the temperature behavior of fluid injected at constant surface temperature in a well is derived and .solved analytically. A formula for the fluid temperature at any time and depth is given, as well us a special formula valid for very large times. These formulas are used to calculate temperatures for several typical cases. The results indicate that, initially, the temperature of the water entering the formation is considerably lower than the injection temperature. This condition lasts for only a short period— less than three days for most cases of practical interest. Following this highly transient period, during which the temperature of the fluid entering the formation builds up to about 50 to 75 per cent of the injection temperature. the system enters a quasi-steady state in which the temperature changes are very slow. After severl years, the bottom-hole temperature will still be 50" to 100°F lower than the injection temperature, hilt the heat losses may he tolerable. INTRODUCTION Predicting the behavior of a hot-water flood requires that the temperature of the water entering the injection interval be estimated. This report describes the development and solution of a system of equations which describes the temperature behavior of the injected water in the wellbore with certain simplifying assumptions. The only previous means known to the authors for describing such a process is that of Moss and White.' Their results appear to be close to those obtained by our method in the practical cases which were compared; this agreement is largely due to the fact that in our method temperature soon approaches a quasi-steady state, as was assumed in their method throughout. However, our model covers all times, is continuous (whereas the Moss-White model depends on breaking the depth into discrete intervals) and. we feel. more closely describes the physical problem. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM PHYSICAL SYSTEM AND ASSUMPTIONS The injection procedure consists of pumping water at a fixed surface temperature T., down an infinitely long cylindrical well or tubing of inner radius Any material exterior to the water column such as mud, casing, or cement is regarded as part of the formation. The general behavior of the system may be described qualitatively as follows. When the hot water is first introduced into the system, the temperature difference between the formation and the water is large, resulting in a high rate of heat transfer. As a result, the temperature adjacent to the wellbore rises very quickly. Because the segment of the formation adjacent to the wellbore largely controls the heat transfer rate, the heat transfer rate will become relatively constant when this portion has reached a temperature close to that of the water opposite it. The temperature of the water and formation then increase very slowly with time. The length of the initial highly transient period and the temperature of the water at its conclusion will be functions of depth, injection rate, injection-string radius, surface injection temperature and the physical properties associated with the water-formation system. The following additional assumptions were made. 1. There is no heat transfer by radiation in the system. 2. There is no heat transfer by conduction in the vertical direction in either the injection stream or the formation. 3. The linear volumetric and mass flow rate of the water is constant throughout the injection stream. 4. No horizontal temperature gradient exists in the injection stream. 5. The product of density and heat capacity is constant for both the water and the formation, and the formation thermal conductivity is constant. 6. Initially, both the water in the wellbore and the reservoir are at a temperature given by the (constant) ambient surface temperature plus the product of depth and geothermal gradient (assumed constant). At large distances for the wellbore (r m), the formation will remain at this temperature. 7. The water temperature and the formation temperature at r — r,, are equal for all depths D. After the explosion in the Black Heath pit, that company sent to England for some experienced miners to reopen the mine. The results of their work in this vicinity are mentioned in an advertisement for pit hands by the Mid-Lothian Co., as follows: "PIT HANDS WANTED.-In consequence of reports having been circulated of the insecurity of hirelings in the Mid-Lothian Mines, the Company deem it proper to make known, that the mines have recently been opened, and that not the slightest explosion from gas has occurred; the workings were laid out and are now progressing, ° under a plan furnished by Messieurs Foster & Hall, .two distinguished English Colliers, sent over from England to reclaim the Pits of the Black Heath Company after the recent explosion of gas-and the present under ground operations are now conducted under the management of one of the English foremen left here by these gentlemen, and supervised by Mr. Wm. Hall, who has under his superintendence the Black Heath Company's Works at present. The skill and capacity of those gentlemen, is fully evinced in their skilful reclamation of the Black Heath Mines, and their present successful working of said Pits; and their confidence in the safety of the hands in the Mid-Lothian Mines, will be seen, by reference to the annexed extract from the Plan left by Messrs. Foster & Hall for laying out and working the Mid-Lothian Mines, and from the Certificate of Mr. William Hall, as to the manner in which that plan is carried into effect. This publication has been deemed proper, as the Company are now in want of some ten or fifteen additional able-bodied, active Pit-hands, on hire by the year, for which they will give the most liberal hire. The Company have not hitherto spared any labor or expense, deemed necessary to secure the absolute safety and comfort of the hands in their mines; nor is it designed in future to omit any thing that can add to the security of their own hands, or the hired laborers of other persons-indeed they can, with great propriety, say, as far as they have progressed, that no mines in this country exhibit stronger, if as strong, evidence of general safety. The Company will receive on hire, no hands who do not voluntarily enter their service -and they request of those having hands to hire out, to remember that they will want upon hire, successively, at intervals of every ninety days, some additional four or five hirelings during the year, or to purchase, progressively, that number of healthy, able-bodied young men. "Owners of slaves at a distance from the Coal Mines, would do well to give some attention to the subject. There is no place in this country where slave labor commands as much, where their general health is better, and where the treatment and contentment of the slaves are surpassed. It is true that within the last few years several disastrous accidents have occurred, but from the scientific and practical skill attracted to the mines, these accidents will be of rare occurrence, it is to be hoped. THE Juneau gold belt is divided into ore-bands of poor definition. The most easterly workings on the , belt, those of the Alaska Gastineau Co., disclosed three separate bands: the Footwall or Ground-hog band, 70 ft. wide; the Perseverance band on which the recent mining was done, also 70 ft. wide; and the No. 2 band, 100 ft. wide. These bands, aggregating 240 ft., are found over a width of 2000 ft. Going toward the west into the adjoining Alaska Juneau ground, four bands have been found which have a total 'right-angle thickness of 755 ft. These bands are convergent in their westerly trend and terminate on the plane of Silver Bow fault. The four bands have better definition at the fault plane than at the eastern boundary line where they enter the property. -Along the property line, the width of the bands and intervening country is 1600 ft., and at the Silver Bow fault this width is reduced to 1300 ft. The distance from the eastern property line to Silver Bow fault is 2400 ft. The bands are slate or slate with metagabbro intrusions, together with gold-bearing quartz masses, stringers, and gash veins. The bands themselves are not all ore, but all commercial .ore is found within the bands. They have no uniform width either in horizontal or vertical section. The ore has no hard and fast boundary except where cut by faults, and profitable mining ceases on a vague and

THE object of this paper is to present a survey of some of the physical properties of sheet nickel silver when subjected to cold rolling and when annealed at temperatures extending from 350° C. throughout the commercial annealing range. A number of alloys were taken from stock and analyzed. Four of these, representing low nickel and high nickel both with and without lead, were chosen for the tests. The bars (which were then coiled) were annealed together in a mill muffle and afterwards pickled in a 10 per cent. sulfuric-acid solution and cold rolled in stages of approximately .one number (B. & S.) at a time to No. 18 B. & S. gage. After each stage, suitable samples were set aside for physical tests. Additional samples were chosen for tests after the bars were rolled to Nos. 8, 10, 12, and 14 gage. These samples were annealed together in the mill muffle and, after pickling, were finished on 0.050-in. gage, yielding a series of specimens 2, 4, 6, and 8 numbers hard for the subsequent annealing tests. Tensile test pieces 9 by 1 in. (22.9 by 2.5 cm.) were cut from both lots and the central portion was milled to give a test section 2 ½ in. long by ;Z in. wide. A distance of 2 in. was marked off on the edge of each specimen with light punch marks. In the case of the annealed alloys, Erichsen test pieces 4 by 2 1/2 in. were also taken.

On the basis of microscopic studies, melting-point observations, and X-ray analyses, a phase diagram is proposed for the Cb-V system. A complete series of solid solutions is formed with a minimum in the solidus at 1810°C near 35 wt pct Cb. No compounds or intermediate phases were found in the system above 650°C. THERE is an ever increasing need for better structural metals and alloys for use in nuclear reactors. In addition to the normal properties of engineering structural materials, such as high temperature strength, resistance to corrosion, and fabric-abil~ty, the nuclear properties of the material must be considered. In a nuclear reactor it is important to conserve neutrons, so a material which removes these neutrons from the reaction excessively is considered to have unfavorable nuclear properties. In nuclear-reactor design the engineer must have nuclear as well as other data available on alloys in order to make a wise selection of materials. Due to the fact that many of the common structural materials have undesirable nuclear properties, it is vital that new alloys of metals having more favorable nuclear properties be investigated. Columbium and vanadium are both high melting metals, both exhibit resistance to chemical attack, and no great difficulty is encountered in fabricating them into desired shapes. With proper treatment both metals can be cold rolled extensively without failure. In addition they have desirable nuclear properties for certain types of reactors. Therefore, the alloys of columbium and vanadium should be of interest in the atomic energy program. Since an alloy-development program is enhanced by a knowledge of the phase equilibria of the components, this investigation was undertaken to establish the phase diagram for the Cb-V system. According to the Hume-Rothery rules for alloying,' the chemical similarity, crystal structure, and atomic-size factor are favorable for a complete series of solid solutions for this system. Both elements are in the same family of group V of the periodic table and thus are quite similar chemically. The crystal structures of columbium and vanadium are compatible for extensive solid solubility, since both have body-centered-cubic structures. The atomic diameters of columbium and vanadium are 2.85 and 2.62Å, respectively. This difference of slightly more than 8 pct is well within the 15 pct maximum difference allowed for extensive solid solubility. Experimental Procedures Source of Materials: Columbium powder and sheet trimmings were obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. According to the manufacturer the metal contains less than 1 pct impurity. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 1800 ppm C in the powder while the sheet trimmings contained less than 500 ppm C. Spectrographic analysis showed minor amounts of Ca, Cr, Fe, Mn, Si, Ti, V, and Zr in both forms of the columbium. No commercial source of vanadium having the ductility and purity desired was available to the authors at the beginning of this investigation. As a result, all of the vanadium used in this study was prepared by the bomb reduction of vanadium pen-toxide with calcium employing the method reported by Long.' Yields of massive vanadium normally were about 80 pct. Chemical analysis of the vanadium prepared in this manner showed the presence of 200 to 500 ppm N and 800 to 1000 ppm C. Minor amounts of Ca, Fe, Mn, Si, Zr, Cr, and Cb were detected by spectrographic analysis. This vanadium metal was ductile and was cold rolled into 5 mil sheet. Annealing was not necessary during this rolling and the metal retained its cold-rolling characteristic after are-melting. Preparation of Alloys: The Cb-V alloys were prepared by melting pieces of vanadium sheet togethel-with columbium in the form of sheet or pellets of powder. The melting was carried out under argon in conventional arc-melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water-cooled copper crucible. Each alloy was remelted three or four times, inverting the alloy after each melting in order to assure complete mixing. Alloys normally were obtained as round flat disks, weighed approximately 70 grams, and had roughly the shape of a disk 1 1/2 in. in diameter and 1/4 in. thick. Half of each alloy

WHY should I, a geologist, be coming before you to talk about finding ore? Certainly, the great discoveries of the past have not been made by geologists, but by men of very different tastes and training. If, in the year 1800, the course of ore discovery could have been foreseen, there would have been no reason to put it into the hands of geologists or other men of technical preparation. It was not geologists but explorers, Indian fighters, prospectors, manual laborers, and hardy financiers, who initiated the American mining industry. Then why this association of geological technique with ore finding? Why this feeling that the way to find ore is to apply to the problem what we call geo- logical principles? Well, to put it broadly, the old method has run out on us. It no longer works. Or, to put it another way, the cost of finding ore by the old method has mounted so high that one old district after another has become, practically speaking, dead, and various other old districts that are still going apparently at full strength are actually beginning to limp, and, with the cost of discovery mounting yearly, to fear, more than they will acknowledge, that the end is approaching.

LARGEST of any hoist installation ever manufactured in Canada is that being erected at No. 5 shaft, Creighton mine, of the Inter- national Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. It is a bicylindrical conical- drum hoist with the drums arranged in tandem, and driven by two direct- current motors through single reduction gearing. This hoist was designed by the Canadian Allis-Chalmers, Limited and manufactured at their works in Lachine, Quebec.

THE important literature concerning zirconium in magnesium-base alloys is predominantly contained in patent references. Sauerwald, Eisenreich, and Holub1-4 discovered the profound grain-refining influence of small amounts of zirconium on cast magnesium and the attendant increases in strength, and ductility. They extended their work to reveal that limited amounts of certain other elements, including zinc, could be added for further improvement in strength and hardness. British. Patent 5111376 relates to the parent discoveries of Sauerwald, Eisen¬reich, and Holub. All of these references deal primarily with casting characteristics and properties in the cast state. Minor mention is made of desirable tensile strength, ductility, and toughness of wrought Mg-Zr alloys* modified by one or more additional elements. No extensive reference in the literature" has been found to the particular characteristics of wrought Mg-Zn-Zr alloys, with which the present paper is concerned. - The work to be discussed represents essentially an extrusion study of the Mg-Zn-Zr alloys and indicates that this system is highly interesting in the wrought state both academically and commercially. Accordingly, an important aim of this paper is to describe the hot-workability, tension and compression properties, metal¬lography, and toughness of these alloys. Compositional variations are limited to the ranges o to 7 per cent Zn and o to I per cent Zr. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloying and Casting Alloying ingredients were cell mag¬nesium, commercial zinc (intermediate grade), and a chloride salt containing approximately 50 per cent ZrCl2 and 50 per cent alkali chlorides. This salt is produced by Titanium Alloy Manu¬facturing Company. Melting, alloying, and pouring procedure essentially followed the crucible process as described by Nelson.6 The magnesium was melted using Dow No. 310 flux, and the temperature raised to 1350° to 1400°F for the alloying operations. After alloying of the zinc, the zirconium containing salt was added in small portions with vigorous stirring. This is an adaptation of the method described in British Patent 533264.7 The alloying efficiency of zir¬conium was approximately 30 per cent. During the alloying of zirconium, fluorspar was added in amount required as a flux¬inspissating agent. Next the melt was refined with Dow No. 310 flux and held quietly for 15 min. INITIAL development of the south orebody at San Manuel is being carried out from the No. 1 and No. 2 shafts. The haulage and grizzly levels are being driven to develop the upper one third of the massive hydrothermally altered and fractured monzonite orebody. This first haulage level has been placed at the 1475-ft level with a grizzly level 60 ft above. The grizzly level will be connected to all service shafts so that men and supplies can come down to the grizzly level and go to working places without congesting the haulage level. These connections are also a vital part of the ventilation plan. The haulage level is being advanced along the north and south fringes of the orebody and connections are being driven to the three shafts now under construction. The No. 1 and No. 2 shafts will serve the development work with supplies, skip hoisting, and ventilation at each shaft and the two shafts are connected on both the grizzly and haulage level.

So far as this office is informed, the mining engineers are a unit against licensing, but if we must be licensed the most innocuous law that has been submitted is the draft prepared by Engineering Council. IF it had not been for the testimony of former Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, before the Senatorial investigating committee the public would have heard little about the Federal Government's suit against California for the ownership of the tidelands. The Ickes-Pauley dispute brought to public attention that the California tideland oil deposits are the last remaining large Federal oil reserves. Ickes contends that these tideland oil deposits belong to the nation for the benefit of all the people of all the states and not solely to the State of California. Ickes also accused California oil man Ed Pauley of offering to give $330; 000 to the Democratic party fund if Ickes would drop the Federal Government's suit against the State of California for the ownership of said tidelands. The tidelands may be considered as the land bordering the coast line between mean high tide and outward under the ocean for a distance of a marine league, or about three statute miles. This strip of land along the coast of southern California contains large oil deposits which have a present and future prospective value of several billion dollars.

A microelectrophoresis technique has been used to measure the zeta potential of quartz over a range of pH and Ni (11) and Co (Ilj concentrations. Results have been discussed in terms of adsorption of Ni (11) and Co (11) cations and hydroxide precipitates. Possible relationships between the experimental results and the formation of lateritic nickel deposits have been discussed. The adsorption of metallic cations to the surface of silicate minerals is of significance in many industrial and natural processes. In an earlier publication,' the adsorption of Fe (111) to the quartz surface, a phenomenon of importance in flotation, was studied qualitatively using microelectrophoresis techniques. This paper reports the extension of this work to an investigation of the adsorption from aqueous solution of Co (11) and Ni (11) to the quartz surface. The adsorption of these metals was of interest for two reasons; firstly, the importance of such an adsorption process in the formation of nickel deposits by the lateritization of nickeliferous rocks, and secondly, the comparison of electrophoresis data for these metals, whose hydroxides precipitate in the pH range 7-8, with similar data for Fe (111) where the hydroxide first precipitates at pH 2.8. The development of laterites is essentially a near-surface geological process involving vertical and, in part, horizontal redistribution of elements derived from rock-forming minerals. This redistribution of elements leads to the formation of layers within the lateritic profile which are enriched in one or more of these elements and, depending on the nature of the original rocks, continued lateritization may give rise to iron ores, bauxites or nickeliferous laterites. The mechanisms discussed in this paper deal with the last mentioned type of deposit although the considered factors are applicable to laterites in general. Nickeliferous laterites are derived from basic and ultrabasic rocks containing ferro-magnesian silicates. These rocks may be partly or wholly converted to serpentinites. Besides their high Mg, Si and Fe contents, they also contain small amounts of Mn, Al, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu and Zn. The nickel content is usually near to 0.2-0.3%, but for economic use this must be increased during lateritization to over 1% and preferably over 2%. The zone of nickel enrichment is usually at some depth within the lateritic profile. Unpublished work by Mr. O'Brien on nickel-bearing laterites in eastern Australia indicated four visually different types of material which were separated from crushed samples under a stereo-microscope. Although chemical analyses indicated that all four types of fragments contained 2-4% nickel and smaller amounts of cobalt, X-ray diffraction and optical studies revealed only quartz, hematite and chromite as well as, in one of the types, a serpentine mineral. No distinct, nickeliferous minerals were detected. Furthermore, it was possible to extract some 60% of the nickel content of the laterites with cold 0.5N hydrochloric acid. It was therefore postulated that much of the contained nickel was present as amorphous, adsorbed material. In considering this fact, as well as the problem of the actual method of transfer and fixation of elements within the lateritic profile, it was further postulated that the transfer of these elements probably took place partly as solutions and partly as colloids and that the fixation of these was caused by adsorption and flocculation. The existence of nickel in solution in water draining from serpentinites has been confirmed by Smurov.2 Although we have no evidence for the transportation of nickel in the colloidal state, it is well accepted that colloids are important in the formation of laterites. Previous work by Mr. Mackenzie' has already indicated that iron may be adsorbed on quartz under conditions which could be expected in a lateritic profile, but no information was available for nickel or cobalt. Although adsorption possibly also takes place on minerals other than quartz, the latter is significant because silica is an important constituent of the silicate parent rocks. During lateritization, it is released to form free quartz and it is likely that it is initially extremely fine-grained. This would provide abundant opportunities for adsorption and it was de-

COPPER and the copper-base solid solutions readily form twin crystals when plastically deformed at a suitably elevated temperature or annealed after cold deformation. In fact, no feature of the microstructure of these materials is more prominent or characteristic than these straight-sided bands or simple lines of division which sometimes come from groups of thin polysynthetic lamellae, penetrating part way or wholly through the parent grain substance, but often divide the grain into a few or perhaps only two crystallographically related parts. Nearly always the bands as seen in the usual microscopic examination of a specimen come into vivid contrast with the adjacent crystalline material owing to the inherent difference in orientation. Bands which under special conditions of orientation cannot be seen with vertically incident light are often visible under oblique illumination and, when this fails, contrasting effects usually may be obtained by using polarized light. There is no longer any doubt that these synthetic banded structures obtained in the ordinary course of working and annealing are due to twinning of the spinel type which was observed long ago in a number of metals crystallizing in the isometric system.1 It has been customary in metallurgical literature to designate these synthetic twins, which grow into prominence during an annealing process, as "annealing twins" without regard to the actual mode of their formation, which is, indeed, obscure and with scant recognition of the fact that prior deformation is essential, no twins having been observed in metal of known unstrained history. This is questionable; especially in view of. the fact that in a number of metals and minerals, reorientation into the twin configuration is known to occur as a result of a simple shearing mechanism along the recognized twinning planes and the

IN the discussion on the paper on subsidence by R. V. Norris and H. W. Montz (Teohnical Publication No. 153), H. N. Eavenson has been good enough to quote some of my views regarding the phenomena of subsidence; he has, of course, only mentioned these briefly, and as he has not represented them quite correctly, it is evident that I have failed to make them clear. Seeing that he, and apparently some of the others who took part in the discussion, appear to hold views different from my own, I think it advisable to put my opinions down as definitely and as clearly as possible, because it appears to me at least possible that some of the differences above referred to may be differences of language and definition rather than of fact. The statements I propose to submit refer to the simplest cases, namely where an area in a practically horizontal bed has been entirely worked out. My experience has been confined to beds of bituminous coal and of ironstone, but D I do not at the moment see why there should be any difference in principle between the working of a bed of anthracite and one of bituminous coal, provided that the other conditions are the same. I wish to emphasize that I am considering the conditions of complete working out of the mineral bed with the roof allowed to come down and form goaf in accordance with the general British practice; 1 am excluding, therefore, methods of hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand stowage where extraneous material is brought in to hold up the roof. I am also excluding the case of bord and pillar working where pillars of small size are deliberately left in, apparently with the idea that these will subsequently crush and let the roof down gradually. Such a method of mining has long been discontinued in this country, indeed in Europe generally, and I venture to predict that the time will come when such a recklessly wasteful method will no longer be tolerated even in the United States. Further, I am referring entirely td static conditions after the mineral bed has been worked out and the ground has come to rest; the phenomena that occur during the course of extraction are much more complicated, and these I am not discussing here. EVERY producer of crude oil knows what is meant by the Rule or Law of Capture. It means that the ultimate ownership of a migratory substance such as oil is not determined until that substance is reduced to physical possession. Unless, therefore, the producer moves quickly to capture his share from the common pool, he may lose to any neighbor who is drilling and producing more rapidly than he a portion of the oil originally underlying his property. And there is no recourse open to him if his property is so drained. Under this rule it is obvious that the owner of an oil property, if he is to protect his' ownership, must be governed in his development and production policies by the activities of his neighbor rather than by his own business requirements. He must drill as densely and as fast as the other operators in the field or lose part of the oil to which he should be entitled.
