The reclaiming of nietallics from slag and sweepings is of vital interest to every brass-foundry man, but the first cost and interest on the investment often make it prohibitive for the small foundry to enjoy the benefits of a complete concentrating unit. However, the cost of such an installation and the cost of operation are often exaggerated to such an extent that foundries dispose of their copper-bearing refuse at a great loss. This paper gives the actual costs and the returns obtained in the reclaiming plant used at the Ohio Brass Co. This plant is divided into two sections—the preliminary treatment and concentrating departments. In the former occur the screening, crushing, and hand-picking operations whereby rnost of the non-valuable and heavy metallic constituents are removed. The concentrating equipment consists of an elevator, bins, jigs, ball-mill, arid table. Preliminary Treatment The preliminary treatment varies, depending on whether the material is slag, foundry-floor sweepings, or brass casting-floor sweepings. Material of the first class is produced from the operation of six Steele-Harvey and six Schwartz furnaces; the second class represents sweepings from an average of thirty-five. molding floors per day: and the last is collected around the sprue cutters and knockout bench. Treatment of Slag The slag, analyzing 30 to 40 per cent. copper, is passed over a 3-mesh yard screen (Tyler standard mesh) stretched on an inclined rectangular frame supported by adjustable legs and equipped with a hopper which directs the undersize into a barrow. The fine product, running about 20 per cent. copper and representing 20 to 25 per cent. of the total slag, goes direct to a storage bin for concentrator frrd. The oversize is charged into a No. 2 Hill cinder crusher, which takes 175 to 200 11,. to a charge and crushes two charges per hour through 'a No. 4 riddle. It

Violent, spontaneous destruction of coal faces and ribs during, what are commonly called, bumps endangers and at times destroys life and property in mines of the Book Cliffs coalfield, Carbon County, Utah. Because these mines supply much of the coking coal for the West Coast steel industries, mining is necessary, although costs are high and operating conditions are very difficult at times. As operations continue, mining will go to greater depths, and the difficulties will increase. Whether or not mining can be continued successfully depends in part on whether or not incidence of bumps can be controlled successfully. For this reason, the U.S. Geological Survey, at the request of and in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, undertook a study of the Sunnyside No. 1 mine to determine what geologic factors were related to the incidence of bumps. This report presents the preliminary results of that study and indicates that some observable geologic features in the mine may be related directly or indirectly to bumps, and that other features may be used to infer stress distribution around workings that will aid in design of roof support measures. Coal is mined in the Sunnyside No. 1 mine from depths as great as 2500 ft by room-and-pillar methods. The surface topography is rugged with many steep cliffs and deep canyons, hence the load on the coal varies greatly within short distances. Much of the Sunnyside coal is under high stress, and while being mined, it shatters continuously' and falls from the face. Continuous shattering (bumping) makes mining easy, but if the shattering is interrupted, greater stress is built up and violent bumps may result when the coal is mined.

Copper blast-furnace construction in America has long recognized a general standard in the rectangular water-jacketed shaft with separate forehearth. The details, however, and especially those relating to shaft dimensions, have had to meet a great variety of conditions, and show no uniformity whatever. Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in.; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18 ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Ground was broken for the Great Falls works in the spring of 1891. About a year later, the concentrator was able to begin operation, followed within the next few months by the Brueckner, reverberatory, and converter departments, and in April, 1893, by the first blast fur-

ONE of the features of the annual meeting was a round table conference on carbon in pig iron, on Feb. 16. This was presided over by R. H. Sweetser, and the discussion, which was so interesting as to require holding an additional session in the after-noon, ranged over such a wide field that only a brief outline of it will be attempted here. The full discus-sion together with the papers will be printed later. The first paper was one on the need for research in foundry pig iron (1648-C) by Richard Moldenke, who pointed out the trend in present practice of attaining low cost in pig iron production by hotter blast, addi-tion of. scrap to the blast furnace, and. the enormous increase in the output per furnace day. He pointed out that remelting processes are oxidizing processes, to some degree at least, and the metal cannot be given the deoxidizing finish which is characteristic of the steel-making process. The trend today is toward specifying total carbon content in foundry pig irons, and since the carbon content depends on a variety of factors, he suggested that the blast-furnace men and the foundry men study the question and agree on a minimum of total carbon for the given silicon ranges. The discussion of this paper was participated in by E. J. Lowry, Robert Jones, T. L. Joseph,. R. H. Sweet-ser, J. G. Ferguson, W. B. Coleman, E. P. Ross and D. J. Demorest and ranged from a comparison of the total carbon used in making a ton of pig iron in charcoal practice versus coke practice to a discussion of the bad effects observable from the use of scrap This paper was followed by one on carbon character-istics of copper-bearing pig iron by W.. B. Coleman. In view of the belief in many foundries that copper-bear-ing pig iron made trouble in the foundry, experiments were made by adding copper in various amounts up to 1 per cent and with the cooperation of the Robesonia Iron Co. a large number of tests were made over a run of foundry iron. The final conclusion was that the ad-dition of less than 1 per cent metallic copper did not seem to alter the physical properties and that a blast furnace using copper-bearing ore can produce pig iron suitable for making small castings, showing low-Brinell hardness test, good transverse and deflection tests, and high-total carbon.

ROBERT WOOLSTON HUNT, who joined the Institute in 1874, served twice as its President, was made Honorary member in 1919, in whose honor the Hunt prize and medal were established, and who, within a month, had received the Washington Award, died at his home in Chicago on July 11, 1923. Robert Woolston Hunt was born Dec. 9, 1838, in Fallsington, Buck County, Pa., His father, Dr. Robert A. Hunt, of Trenton, N. J., graduated from Princeton College in the class of 1824, and later from the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania. His mother was Martha Lancaster Woolston. Mr. Hunt spent several years learning the practical side of iron making in the roll-ing mills of John Burnish & Co. at Pottsville, Pa. Later he took a course in analytical chemistry in the laboratory of Booth, Gar-rett & Blair, upon the completion of which he entered the employ of the Cambria Iron Co. at Johns-town, and for them, on Aug. 1, 1860, established the first laboratory in Amer-ica forming an integral part of an iron or steel organization. In the fall of 1861 he en-tered the United States military service, and was in command of Camp Curtin at Harrisburg, serving as mustering officer for the State of Pennsylvania, with the rank of Captain. In 1864 he assisted in recruiting Lambert's Independent Mounted Company, and was mustered into active ser-vice as a sergeant, having tossed up with a friend who had also participated in recruiting the company, as to which one should receive a Lieutenant's commission. Upon being mustered out of service, Mr. Hunt returned to the employ of the Cambria Iron Co. which sent him to the works at Wyandotte, Mich., where experiments with the new Bessemer process of making steel were being conducted. He was placed in charge of those works in July, 1865, and so continued until May, 1866, when the Cambria company called him back to Johnstown to take charge of their steel business, intending at once to begin the erection of a Bessemer steel plant. The plant, however, was not built for several years, and in the meantime the Cambria company began the rolling of steel rails for the Pennsylvania Railroad, using ingots of Bessemer steel produced by the Pennsylvania Steel Co. at their Steelton works. Mr. Hunt had charge of the steel for these operations; and in August, 1867, the first steel rails made in America on a commercial order were rolled.

Stable aqueous dispersion of magnetite colloid of about 10 nm in diameter was obtained by allowing an anionic or nonionic surfactant to adsorb on the hydrophobic surface of magnetite particles prepared by monomolecular adsorption of oleate. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, sodium oleate and poly (oxyethylene) nonyl phenyl ethers whose hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) are higher than 12 were suitable for giving a second adsorption layer to obtain a stable dispersion. Stability of the colloidal suspensions depends upon pH of the solution and is controlled by the dissociation of the adsorbed surfactant in the second layer. The addition of ethyleneglycol, which was used for lowering the freezing point of the dispersion, did not affect the stability when used in amounts smaller than 60% of water. Preparation of diester-based ferrofluids was also attempted by the same procedure using a nonionic surfactant as second layer molecule. Hydrophobic magnetite colloid, which had been preliminarily coated with mono-molecular oleate, was suspended in di(2-ethylhexyl) agipate, azerate, and sebacate respectively, and dispersion stability was investigated by adding various poly (oxyethylene) nonyl phenyl ethers of different HLB values. It was found that those with HLB values between 10.9 and 13.3 were suitable for this purpose. Stabilities of the dispersions in a magnetic field were investigated up to 1 T by applying an electromagnetic field. No separation of dispersant was observed and each magnetite dispersion displayed the characteristics of a magnetic fluid.

In 1900, Elmore found that if an acidulated pulp was stirred up with an oil which was relatively insoluble in and lighter than water, and the mixture was allowed to stratify, much of the sulfide would be found hanging to the lower surface of the floating body of oil and could be skimmed off or overflowed with it. The action of the flotation agent here is twofold, first to select the sulfide from the gangue—what today is called collection—and second, to buoy the collected sulfide away from the gangue. The action in collecting is illustrated by Fig. 1: which contrasts the behavior of drops of oil brought, under water, to the surfaces of gangue and sulfide particles, respectively. The oil displaces water from the surface of the sulfide; the water displaces oil from the gangue surface. If, instead of considering the solid particles the fixed parts of the system of oil, water and solids. we consider the oil and water fixed and the solids presented to the surface of contact, the condition will be as shown in Fig. 2; the sulfide tends to be drawn into the interface and the gangue to be excluded. The sulfide particles are held in the oil-water surface by the tension of this surface. The buoyant effect is supplied by the oil droplets in bringing the sulfides to the water surface, but not in holding them there. Gas as Buoyant Medium of Flotation In 1906 Sulman. Picard and Ballot discovered a practical and substantially fool-proof method of doing what Everson, in 1886, and Fro-nlcnt. DeBavay Bessel and Elmore had been doing in the intervening years, viz.: using gas in place of oil as the buoyant medium for flotation, but retaining oil as the agent. To all of these inventors "oil," with no qualification as to its kind and no true understanding of its function, was the important thing. Hut they placed on the oil an additional burden viz.: froth-making, and it soon became apparent that not all oils were suitable for the dual purpose. As a matter of fact, it is probable that each of these inventors knew only one suitable oil at the time he wrote his patent, but used the generic term in the patent with the usual idea

The fact that intrusion of water into oil wells can be prevented by treating the sand adjacent to the well seems to have been only recently recognized. Swan1 mentions the process of solidifying naphthalene in strata. R. Van A. Mills2 recommends the use of materials such as sodium silicate and sodium carbonate, which react with oil-field water to form solid plugging agents. When a well is drilled in a new field the oil sands are found essentially devoid of water (Fig. 1). Unless a completely impermeable break exists over wide areas in the field, no water is found above the lower limit of the oil zone and no oil is found below the upper limit of the water zone. After considerable oil has been taken from the well, however, it is almost universal experience that water intrusion occurs. This intrusion may be of two kinds. The water may follow a path parallel to the bedding planes of the producing formation through loose streaks in the pay sand, as shown in Fig. 2, or the water level of the field may rise and enter the well by coning (Fig. 3). Water entering from the side is called "edge water," and that coming in from the bottom is called "bottom water.'' Discussion of the paper of W. A. Forbes, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2477 to 2514.. SAMUEL K. VARNES,* Steelton, Pa.:-We have a gas-cleaning plant consisting of a, centrifugal dry dust catcher, and two rain-type wet scrubbing towers, 25 by 60 ft. each, for rough cleaning of blast-furnace gas. This plant was put in early in 1910, with the intention of cleaning gas for use in hot blast stoves and under boilers, and was so used for several months. Soon after it went into service, the blast-furnace men complained that they could not get as high blast temperatures as they had obtained when using dirty gas. It was decided to run a series of careful tests to determine if this were true and to what degree the apparent results might be affected by other conditions. About 60 tests were run, covering a period of five months, and at the end we came to the conclusion that it did not pay us to scrub the gas for stoves and boilers. The tests were all run upon a single stove, no boiler tests being made, but the conclusions of the stove tests being applied to the boilers. D. C. Hilty (Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Niagara Falls, N. Y.)—This paper is a very nicely detailed analysis of a difficult problem. I would like to point out that the results that Mr. Crafts and I published a few years ago had no reference to activity, or anything else of a similar nature; our results were strictly empirical. It is quite gratifying that we now have a case where results involving activity coefficients and results derived from direct observations on actual steel melts are practically identical. When two different laboratories, working from two entirely different approaches, come out with results in such good agreement in their major significance, that is an achievement. It is something that was not possible 15 or 20 years ago. There is one question I would like to ask Dr. Chip-man. It has to do with a very minor point of disagreement in these results. When we reported the kink in the Si-O solubility curve I think you may recall that it came at the different temperature levels at about the order of 0.015 to 0.03 pct 0 and 0.03 to 0.07 pct Si—we also pointed out that we had difficulty in obtaining data at that level, although we finally did get some. I note in going through the data for the present paper, that there are no samples in those particular silicon and oxygen ranges. I wonder if that was purely accidental or was there a reason for it. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—Mr. Hilty, do you have any explanation for that discrepancy between Dr. Chipman's curve and your own Mr. Hilty—Our explanation for it at that time was that for some reason our system probably was not in true equilibrium with SiO, that is, in equilibrium with the silica crucible at that level. We did observe, however, that that was the level at which both the metal and the slag became saturated with SiO,. On the average, in studying inclusion formation in small ingots permitted to solidify normally from the molten state, we observed pure silica inclusions at silicon contents over about 0.05 pct and FeO type inclusions at silicon

This paper embodies the results of theoretical studies concerning gas reservoirs, especially the effect of drilling programs of various intensities upon pressure depletion and ultimate recoveries. The primary objective has been to determine the net quantity of recoverable gas that could be obtained as a result of each additional well, in comparison with the gas . that might be secured from a single well ideally placed with respect to both acreage and geological structure. No method is yet known whereby the relative merits of intensive and sparse drilling can be compared experimentally; a reservoir must either be drilled closely or developed with wide spacing, but both programs cannot be conducted simultaneously. Hence, the analytical method seems to be the only approach to the problem. While the present state of our theoretical knowledge does not offer a precise solution to the problem of gas flow in sand bodies, it takes such appropriate cognizance of the limitations of the methods used as to restrict any answer obtained to the realm of engineering accuracy. In solving the problem for the average gas field, it was found that practically the same answers resulted as to pressure distribution, regardless of the size of the drainage radius, even though the latter was assumed to vary from a few feet as a minimum to that of the entire reservoir as a maximum. Such limits represent extreme possibilities; therefore, the practical conditions that are associated with normal development programs, in which wells are placed in the center of tracts varying in size from 40 to 640 acres, will of necessity result in less extreme variations than those indicated in the tables accompanying this paper. Stated more concisely, the amount of gas unrecovered at abandonment (of the particular field used for illustrative purposes) will lie somewhere between 4.6 and 6 per cent of the total original content, no matter how intensively the field is drilled. THE following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing: It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given. for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper "Almost all rocks are traversed by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as due in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure and movement within the crust." 1 General Explanation.-In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from moving freely by other material around its boundaries. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as '" shrinkage " jointing. The term " shrinkage " is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.-The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting. .

HISTORY. THE use of iron for the precipitation of copper was known at least as early as the fifteenth century. Both Paracelsus and Basil Valentine refer to it in their writings, as early as 1500 A. D. It was used in Peru, for this purpose prior to 1637, and at Rio Tinto, Spain, as early as the sixteenth century. The statement has been made repeatedly that in the early history of the mining industry at Butte, the practicability of this method of recovering copper from solution was overlooked, and that enormous quantities of copper-bearing water were allowed to go to waste, the copper in which might easily have been recovered at small cost; and that this oversight on the part of the mine operators was due to ignorance of this method of recovering copper. As a matter of fact, very little copper-bearing mineral was encountered in the mines of Butte until a depth of 400 or 500 ft. bad been reached, and in many cases much greater depths were necessary to reach the copper-bearing zone. The water encountered in the upper levels (although in most cases quite highly mineralized) contained little or no copper, and it was only after considerable areas of copper-bearing ore had been uncovered and developed that copper sulphate began to. appear in the mine water in any considerable quantity. In fact, the first water that was observed to contain copper carried it in such small amounts as to be of little or no importance. It was only after years of underground work had opened extensive areas of stopes, drifts, and other underground workings, these being subsequently filled with waste, nearly all of which contained small copper values, which became oxidized by exposure to the air and were acted upon by the slowly percolating mineral water, that the recovery of copper from mine water became commercially important.

THOMAS CROWE,* Victor, Colo.-The interest manifested of late in the treatment of low-grade ores, together with Mr. Clevenger's discussion of the Mill and Metallurgical Practice of the Nipissing Mining Co., prompts me to acid a few remarks relative to concentration in connection with cyanide treatment of low-grade ores. Mr. Clevenger in this discussion does not condemn concentration in this connection, but, nevertheless, the tone of his remarks would lead one to believe that his conclusions are like those of many others: that concentration is often turned to as a last resort in an attempt to improve or obtain an extraction upon an ore by the recovery and sale of the refractory portion of the ore. This, I will attempt to point out, is not always the case. Concentration in connection with cyanidation often performs an entirely different function, i.e., one of saving fine grinding. Economy being the keynote of successful treatment of low-grade ores, the problem often becomes more commercial than metallurgical, and, as there is generally a definite ratio existing between cost of operation, degree of comminution, and percentage of extraction, the grade of ore under treatment usually imposes a limit upon these factors. With many ores grinding is the most expensive single item in their treatment; therefore, the degree of comminution is very apt to be governed by the allowable cost of operation. With most ores the degree of comminution controls to a great extent the percentage of extraction. So in the treatment of low-grade ore it often becomes necessary to sacrifice extraction, through coarse grinding for the benefit of cost, in order that the greatest ultimate profit may be obtained, and it is under these conditions that it is, possible for concentration to play an important part in overcoming to some extent the effect of mesh. The precious metals occurring in an ore are usually closely associated with the metallic portion of the ore, and as this metallic portion is generally fairly well liberated from the gangue at comparatively coarse meshes, further grinding of the ore is necessary only in order that the metallic portion may be reduced sufficiently fine that the precious metal part of it may be dissolved by cyanide solutions in a reasonable length of time.

THE CHAIRMAN (ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.).-Any information likely to throw light on the constitution and proper treatment of high-speed steel in order to obtain maximum results, should surely he welcomed. All users of high-speed steel, I believe, will agree with the authors that, in order to obtain satisfactory results, it is not sufficient to heat all brands of high-speed steel to one and the same temperature; apparently very slight differences of chemical composition seem to call for marked differences in temperature. I think that all of us agree that a properly treated piece of high-speed steel should have a fine austenitic or polyhedral structure and that an appreciable quantity of free carbide may be present in the case of very high tungsten steels. What we seem to lack is a satisfactory method, quick and reliable, of ascertaining when the proper structure has been obtained. I think Mr. Bellis' paper is a step in the right direction. To the untrained eye, however, it is not an easy matter to select from some of his photomicrographs the one representing the best structure; for instance, in the case of steel A, we wonder why temperatures of 2,250 and 2,300 do not yield the same results, seeing that both structures are apparently alike, and the same might apply to some of the other samples. I have no doubt, however, that the experienced observer is capable of detecting structural differences that are not made plain here and by which he is able to select the proper quenching temperature. J.-On page 68 the authors say that the use of a barium chloride bath to eliminate this difficulty has the disadvantage that the surface of the tool becomes decarbonized." I would like to ask whether they actually found that the surface was decarbonized, or whether they base this conclusion on softening alone? A. E. BELLIS, Springfield, Mass.-No, we have never demonstrated that it was a decarbonization, it is just the softening of the steel. The addition of ferrocyanide to the ferrochloride bath has been suggested. I think that is not altogether satisfactory, because the ferrocyanide bath changes composition very rapidly at these high temperatures, and it would be just a question of luck whether or not it had too much or too little ferrocyanide in the bath giving equilibrium with the carbon content.

The statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Mc Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. % in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5" B., flashing in open test at 199" F. The oil is heated to about 200" F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 Ib. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-08. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and " dog houses" to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent. The draft at the firing end of the furnace is 0.18 in. of water. At the throat or in the uptake above the "verb" the draft is about 1 in.

Unlike the bituminous part of the coal industry, the production of anthracite has been fairly well publicized; in fact until about 1845 whenever the coal industry of Pennsylvania was mentioned in papers, magazines or books, anthracite only was meant. Beginning with shipments by river in 1820 fairly complete records of shipments were published each year, and as this variety of coal was the only one used for domestic purposes east of the mountains and north of the Potomac, there was considerable interest in the producing fields on the part of the public. Transportation of anthracite was the cause of the building of the early canals in the state, and later, of some of the earliest railroads. In most publications it has been assumed that commencement of shipments in 1820 was the beginning of the industry; this is far from being so, and it is with the earlier developments this chapter will deal, leaving the later and better known records to existing publications. (See Table No. 53.) The first reference to coal in Pennsylvania by Gabriel Thomas in 1698 has already been mentioned,1 it could only have been anthracite in that section; although of course, he never saw any coal there. Little coal was used excepting by smiths for many years after that. In 1728 the Coventry Forge paid the expenses of a man "to town for Sea Coall and Steell for ye hammer;”2 in 1729 New Castle coal was sold in Philadelphia;3 in 1740 an advertisement mentioned, "very good Pitt and Sea Coal at 18 pence a bushel; at which price 'tis allowed to be cheaper Fewel for Hearth Fireing than Wood at the present Rates,"4 a view not shared by most of the people there for about eighty years; in 1752 Newcastle coal was again mentioned.5 There are no references to coal in the writings of any of the Moravian missionaries, although some who settled near Mauch Chunk in 1746 said that the Indians there made their pipe heads of a soft black stone, which was much more apt to have been slate than anthracite." PERSONNEL work is a term recently introduced to cover the great variety of activities in industrial work that deal with the human factor. Much attention has been focussed upon individual phases of personnel work, such as accident prevention, sanitation, "welfare" work, reducing labor' turnover, and so on. In most cases these activities have been carried on as though they were distinct and separate fields; as a matter of fact, they are only different phases of the single problem of human engineering, and each has important and fundamental relations with the others. Thus, for example, high labor turnover is one of the most .important causes of a high accident rate, and unsatisfactory housing conditions are an important cause of labor turnover. In the early stages of the study of these problems, it was necessary to take them up separately; the time has now arrived at which it is desirable to consider them as a whole in order to bring them into the right relation to each other. When thus considered as phases of an interrelated whole, they may be grouped as personnel work. A discussion of the importance of personnel work as a means of in creasing dividends in industry may be objected to by some as a too materialistic way of looking upon work that is humanitarian. Nothing could he more mistaken than such an opinion. Humanitarianism, per se, has no place in industry, and nothing is gained and much is lost in pre tending that it has. The only reason why a corporation engages in business is to make profits, and any activity of the corporation that does not tend either directly or indirectly toward that end is poor business. It is equally poor business to overlook any activities that do tend indirectly to the making of profits. On this basis, personnel work can be justified as a corporate activity; there is no justification whatever for abstract humanitarianism from the business standpoint. One characteristic of the American workman is a general high level of intelligence, and it is an insult to intelligence to ask a man to believe that anything so impersonal as a corporation is really desirous of benefiting

A GENERAL awakening of interest among mill men concerning the mechanical efficiencies of their crushing machines is evident from a perusal of the recent files of mining publications. Considering the large part of the power bill which must be debited to the crushing department, such. interest is natural. When, however, the articles on the subject are read, the only statement upon which the writers agree is that fine grinding consumes a large amount of power, and that the machine which, from a concentration standpoint, offends as a slime producer is, for that reason, a serious offender in wasting power. When the mill man attempts to find a method for measuring the power wasted, or to compare the efficiency of one machine with that of another for the same work, he is confronted with a choice of methods which lead to conflicting results. There are two reasons why the work of crushing is not more generally understood. In the first place, experimental data are difficult to obtain; and in the second place, before these data can be put in general form certain assumptions must be made. A difference in these assumptions by different investigators has led to conflicting conclusions. This conflict has resulted in the proposal of two laws. The first of these is the so-called Rittinger's law, which is variously stated as follows: . "The work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter."-R. H. Richards: Ore Dressing, p. 304 (1903). "The Work required to crush rock is very nearly proportional to the reciprocals of .the diameters crushed to."-A.
