Most classifiers in use today are, in function, settling pools. A fluid suspension of particles is passed through a pool at such a rate that only a fraction of the particles-the coarser fraction-has time to settle out of suspension. The rest are carried on out of the pool as overflow. The most fundamental way in which such classifiers differ is in the mechanism used to remove the settled particles from the pool. The particles may gravitate from the pool, as in the various sand cones, or they may be conveyed mechanically from the pool by drags, spirals, or reciprocating rakes. The mechanism of settling pool classification and its limitations are discussed. A method for calculating countercurrent classifications is presented. The practical validity of the calculation method has been confirmed through 20 years of use within The Dorr Co. During this time it has been used on diverse feeds and has been checked against many types of settling pool classifiers, with close agreement in nearly every case. Excellent elimination of third critical mesh particles and finer ones may be obtained in a countercurrent classifications series where all stages separate at the same mesh, but elimination of first and second criticals is inherently limited. Spectacular elimination of all criticals may be obtained by arranging successive stages to classify at successively coarser mesh. Improvement in elimination is obtained at the cost of an increased internal recirculation, but this may be tolerable in many cases.

Russia produced over one-half of the world's petroleum in 1901. It dropped to a low figure in 1920 during the reorganization of the new government. Since then it has had a remarkable growth under the constant demands from the Central Bureau at Moscow. The five-year plan called for the development of all industries, many of which had permitted their equipment to gat out of repair or become obsolete, so that when the magic wand of authority demanded that they double, triple or quadruple their former production they looked to the oil industry for aid. This plan made necessary the building of new factories, dams and power stations; the developing of mines and agriculture, and in many places the building of cities and railroads. Exports were the solution and petroleum was the logical one to carry the load of development of the more backward industries. It had a ready market and fields located advantageously for transportation, which was cheap, and there was sufficient oil to meet the market demands at that time, as domestic consumption was not great. PRODUTION IN RUSSIA tant product of exchange. This accounts for the rapid development of the old fields, the search for new ones and the building of refineries and transportation facilities. Fig. 1 shows the advance in production since 1925. There has been a. steady increase since 1920, and with the improved drilling equipment and improved methods it will increase as long as the now proved fields continue to produce new wells. The fields of Baku and Grozny have yielded 95 per cent of this production. In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. We should give them equal importance; for we know that to produce the best results me must start with a good

THE morning session on mining methods with R. M. Raymond as chairman was devoted mainly to papers on explosives and the discussion of these papers. A paper on the numerical index of the re-sistance which rocks offer to the penetration of a drill bit was also read. The first paper, "Relation Between the Oxygen Bal-ance and Propulsive Strength of Eight Gelatin Dynamites" by G. St. J. Perrott, N. A. Tolch and J. E. Crawshaw, was presented by Mr. Perrott, super-intendent of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In this paper which is the beginning of a series of publications on explosives, Mr. Perrott stated that the attempt was made to put down in quantitative form the facts which have been known to explosive engineers for a long time. Eight samples of 40 per cent gelatin dynamite, with oxygen content varying from + 15 to - 36 per cent of the theoretical amount necessary to form complete combustion with all of the combustible elements were tested. The experimental work showed that a bal-anced explosive did not give the greatest propulsive strength-but the most favorable range was from - 8 to - 25 per cent oxygen. The experimental work also brought out the fact that the wrapper of a stick of dynamite enters quite completely into the explosive reaction, and gelatin dynamites from which the wrapper had been removed developed less strength than the a same explosive with the wrapper. The second paper, "Effect of Oxygen Balance of Gelatin Dynamites on the Gaseous Products of Det-onation," by G. W. James and G. St. J. Perrott, was also presented :by Mr. Perrott. The first portion of this paper is given over to a discussion of the relative merits of different types of apparatus for testing and analyzing the combustion products of dynamites. Three types were used (1) the Bichel gage, (2) the Crawshaw-Jones apparatus and (3) the Hercules tank. All three of these types were used in testing dynamites whose oxygen balance varied from-35 to + 6 per cent.

The sudden death of Captain Jones, September 28,1889, became known to his fellow-members on the eve of the Ottawa meeting of the Institute; and at that meeting, Mr. Charles Albert Ashburner, of Pittsburgh, expressed with unaffected feeling and unpremeditated eloquence the sorrow of all. Mr. Ashburner subsequently undertook to revise and extend, for in in the Transactions, the remarks he had made at Ottawa; but death surprised him also, in the midst of his labors; and it has become my duty and privilege to prepare from the memoranda he left behind, the present brief and inadequate notice. To me, who knew and loved them both, this task of double sorrow recalls them both, with a peculiar sense of presence and of absence. They seem to speak from another land, not far away, yet not with human voices—like an echo and its echo. William Richard Jones was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, February 23, 1839. His father was Rev. John G. Jones, a Welsh minister, who had immigrated to the United States in 1832. William was the eldest son, and his father's failing health made it necessary for him to begin early the work of self-support. At the age of ten, he was apprenticed to the Crane Iron company, of Catasauqua, and in this humble capacity entered upon the profession in which he was to become famous. Unquestionably, the thorough acquaintance with all details, acquired by working his way from the bottom to the top, was one secret of the conspicuous executive ability which characterized him in the height of his career. According to a letter from Mr. J. H. Geer, Assistant Chief Engineer of the Cambria Iron Company, Mr. Jones entered the service of that company in 1858 or 1859 as a machinist, and continued to work in that capacity until July, 1862, when he enlisted as a private in the 133d Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, in which he afterwards commanded a company. "The cleanliness and system evidenced in the accompanying photographs of the West Steward change-house will appeal to all mine operators. This design is the most efficient in use at Butte. It is the standard which will probably be used in Butte in all future construction and is the result of a long period of investigation and experimenting. It is important that such a structure be as nearly fire-proof as possible, because of the frequent fires originating within the lockers from matches, etc., in the men's clothes. The concrete floors permit the thorough washing of the building whenever necessary.The lockers are roomy and well ventilated. They are constructed of sheet steel and are warmed from below by steam pipes."

The oxidation of CbO was studied by a gravimetric technique from 400° to 1200°C in oxygen. In this temperature range the oxidatiotz is characterized by an irlductive period of low oxidation rate, which becomes shorter as the temperature increases, followed by a rapid parabolic oxidation. The oxidation of CbO cannot be rate controlling in the oxidation of Cb metal in the temperature range, 800° to 1200°C. A thin optically inactive layer has been observed between the metal and Cb2O5 layer of Cb oxidized at 700°C or higher temperatures. Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) show the edge of a sample of Cb reacted to 50 pct of complete oxidation at 800°C. The sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar; but very few, even of those who knew hinl well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ((Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. At Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., Japan there are three mills, treating a total of 6400 t/d of lead-zinc Ore. In the lead-zinc bulk differential flotation at Shikama Mill the addition of reagents is automatically controlled by the feed rate, the lead and zinc content in feed, froth and tailing, the pH and the concentration of cyanide ion in the pulp. As the zinc thickener overflow at Shikama Mill contains CU(CN)3--, ZnS, CdS, CN-, xanthate and frother, all the ingredients in the over- flow other than CN are floated by using the Nagahm flotation machine, and the water containing only CN- is effectively recycled to the lead- zinc differential flotation circuit. In the lead-zinc straight differential flotation at Mozumi Mill, the overflow of tailing pond is recycled especially to the cleaning flotation circuit by decreasing the pulp density. Thus the integrated recycling of wastewater greatly reduces environmental problem and in addition, it generates sizeable profit.

The investigations of large-grained specimens carried out by Polanyi and Schmid,1 Sykes,2 Goucher,3 Yamaguchi,4 Gough, Cox, and Sopwith,5 Carpenter and Elam,6 Aston,7 and others have shown qualitatively that grain boundaries restrain the deformation of adjacent crystals. But whether or not the influence of the grain boundary is confined to the glide planes intersected by the boundary has not been demonstrated in any of these investigations, nor has there been carried out any quanti-tative analysis, of the influence of a boundary on the deformation of a crystal. IN the practice of ore finding the geologist is continually confronted with the question of oreshoot extension, so that the general problem seems worthy of systematic investigation. This problem appears when the reserves are estimated and when the advisability of deepening the shaft comes up. Moreover, there is need for lower development cost to keep pace with cost reductions in other departments, or even to offset a rising cost of ore finding or ore following. This can be gained by close geologic control of the development; and much of the geology involved is that bearing on the downward, upward, and horizontal extensions of shoots. Furthermore, the purchase of a mine or prospect often depends directly on the question of shoot extension; because it is seldom that the ore is fully developed and the purchase price is almost invariably based largely on "possible" and geologically prospective ore. Most current methods for estimating '(possible" and the more nebulous classes of ore are crude and indecisive. In the following pages the extension of oreshoots is the major theme, although the more basic subject, the general art of ore finding, is given some space. (A) Direct Methods of Extension Prediction (I) Extrapolation and Interpolation of Shoots by Use of Conventional Geologic and Assay Plans, Projections and Cross-sections There is little need for stressing the desirability of detailed geologic plans, assay plans, projections, and cross-sections as a basis for the study and extension prediction of shoots. Underground and surface mapping, in most cases, ought to be done in exhaustive detail. All features of obvious bearing should be mapped and it is good practice to record all possible details, some of which may become significant when studied in the ensemble. It should be emphasized that the mapping should be done with an impartial mind, with interpretation reduced to the minimum. The symbols of the map can be made to distinguish observed facts from interpretation.

Current work within the Magnetic Properties Task of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program has indicated that a relation exists between the measured bulk magnetic susceptibility and fracture and lithological characteristics of granitic cores from the Lac du Bonnet batholith in Manitoba. Susceptibility minima correspond to fractured and associated altered rock; uniform background levels coincide with unaltered, non-fractured homogeneous rock; and susceptibility maxima denote the presence of xenoliths and intervals of core containing large and coarse-grained magnetic minerals. The observed variation in bulk susceptibility is largely controlled by the gram size and the relative abundance of iron-titanium oxide minerals of which magnetite is the most important. The magnetic minerals occur as monomineralic grains of magnetite and hematite, as aggregates of magnetite and ilmenite, hematite and ilmenite and as examples of either of these two categories but exhibiting evidence of oxidation and alteration. The degree of alteration of the oxides is commensurate with the alteration of the enclosing rocks. Susceptibility minima characteristic of fractured rock reflect decreases in oxide gram size and abundance, as a result of the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the development of titanium-rich phases. Correlations between boreholes indicate the possibility of continuous fracture zones at 80 m and 150 m from the surface and another one at a greater depth.

The Ebliden Company, originally entering the field of mining with the workings of the gold-copper-arsenic deposit at Ebliden, commenced zinc benificiation at Kristineberg in 1940 and lead mining at Laisvall in 1943. During the three last decades a number of mines has been developed for production, Today the Mining Division of BOLIDEN produces ore from 22 mines, operates 7 ore dressing plants and produces: [ ] Over two thirds of the lead contents are treated in the lead smelter of the company at Ri6nnskarsverken. The other part of it is sold abroad. The zinc content of the lead concentrates is recovered from the lead smelter at Ri6nnskarsverken. The zinc concentrates are shipped abroad to European smelters in Norway and Germany. Today BOLIDEN has its plants in the northern and the middle parts of Sweden. Figure 1. BOLIDEN also operates the low grade copper ore at Aitik at 7.000 tpd.

My predecessor in the office of President of the Institute started a custom of visiting the various local sections, thus obtaining their points . of view and their ideas as to how the Institute can best serve the interests of its members. Exceedingly valuable- exchange of ideas was thus brought about. I am following this custom as far as the limited amount of free time at my disposal will allow me, and I trust that my successor in office will appreciate the benefit to be derived from following the custom thus initiated and will continue the swing around the circle of the local sections. The activities of the Institute are increased by the prestige gained from large numbers and I trust that every member of this local section will consider himself a member of the committee on increase of membership and will see if he is not able during the coming year to gain at least one new member for the Institute. This is a perfectly possible proposition for, although the membership of the Institute is at present approximately seven thousand, I feel sure there are at least seven thousand more men in the United States who are interested in mining, metallurgy or geology from the metal-mining point of view who would make admirable members or associate members of the Institute. The first consideration of the Institute as a body, and of each member as an individual, is to win the war and defeat the Huns. In order to accomplish this, the Institute, as a body, has cooperated with the other national engineering societies and the great bureaus of the Department of the Interior, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in forming committees to study and advise the Government on pressing problems of vital importance.
