Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

"Today’s high capacity semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills expend vast amounts of energy and in doing so consume tons of shell liners and steel balls, while processing ore. The energy efficiency of these high throughput grinding mills can be attributed to the field of breakage and slurry discharge system. The charge motion and breakage of particles inside the mill depends on the shell lifters design, while the discharge of ground particles is controlled by the grate and pulp lifters. The limitations imposed by poor grate and pulp lifter design become increasingly apparent with increasing size of ag/sag mills and their operation in closed circuit. The design of these mill components has been largely based on trial and error and hence varies considerably between manufacturers. This paper discusses the use of two state of the art design tools - Millsoft™ and FlowMod™. Millsoft™ is an effective tool to design the shell lifters and optimize charge motion, whereas FlowMod™ simulates the slurry discharge system to design grate and pulp lifters. The application of these simulators will be discussed using case studies of full scale mills.INTRODUCTIONMany large mining operations around the world have one or more semi-autogenous (SAG) mills doing bulk of the work in their size reduction operation. The SAG mill is usually followed by a ball mill to finish the size reduction prior to the concentration step. In the past when primary, secondary and tertiary crushers fed material directly to large ball mills, the energy efficiency of the concentrator was determined for the most part by the ball mill operation, whereas now the energy efficiency of a plant often rests largely on the SAG mill operation. The platinum mining industry has experienced a significant increase in fatal accidents. Mine accidents are in principle preventable, and there is enormous pressure on employers to reverse this trend. This paper reviews safety management systems (SMS) as well as behaviour-based safety (BBS). Based on the review, SWOT analyses are performed on the SMS and BBS processes and a model of an integrated safety management system (ISMS) is introduced. A number of fatal accidents is analysed to identify factors that contributed to accidents in the mining industry. Thereafter the potential weaknesses of an SMS of a platinum mine are exposed and the potential benefits of implementing the ISMS for this case study are demonstrated.

"RÉSUMÉDurant les 10 dernières années, les améliorations dans le contrôle des limites des sautages et les arpentages après l’exploitation ont fourni des informations préalables et post facto sur les limites minières réalisées par rapport à la planification, plus particulièrement pour les grands chantiers exploités par les méthodes chambres vides et sous-niveaux. Cependant, peu de recherches ont été faites pour améliorer la délimitation du minerai, l’estimation des ressources et des réserves, les études de faisabilité et la récupération minière dans d’autres types de gisements. Il faudra d’abord expliciter les impacts des lacunes, en quantité et en qualité, de l’information géologique et de l’échantillonnage sur le rendement de l’extraction. Il faudra également remplacer la notion de « dilution générale » par celles de « dilution » et de « perte de minerai ». Les impacts des lacunes observées sur l’exploitation des gisements d’or filoniens sont démontrés par une simulation basée sur des résultats d’études antérieures à la mine Thompson d’Inco, des impacts financiers de densités d’information moindre et par des analyses des valeurs actualisées nettes (VAN) de deux cas types.Deux gisements similaires, de 3 m et 6 m de largeur et exploités par chambres vides sont étudiés, en prenant pour cas de base la délimitation sur maille de 7,5 m (25 pi.) et en étudiant les impacts des limites moins précises supportées par une maille de 15 m (50 pi.), en assumant que ces imprécisions moyennes de +/- 0,62 m se transforment soit en surestimation (dilution), soit en sous-estimation (pertes de minerai).Les impacts d’information moins précise ont été beaucoup plus forts sur le gisement plus étroit : autant la dilution que les pertes de métal ont diminué les VAN du gisement de 3 m de 39,27 % et 45,41 % respectivement, tandis que les VAN du gisement de 6 m ont été diminuées que de 12,84 % et 11,55 %.Ces impacts des valeurs actualisées nettes diminuées justifient et exigent des efforts plus systématiques pour s’assurer que les travaux de mise en valeur et les études de faisabilité soient réalisés de façon requise pour optimiser l’exploitation et offrir aux investisseurs des rendements compétitifs par rapport à ceux des autres secteurs industriels. ABSTRACTDuring the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits.However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses have not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently are poorly documented, the use of these terms is reviewed.Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco’s Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delineation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study.The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit"

The Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit, located at the southern end of the Waitekauri Corridor, Hauraki Goldfield, occurs as quartz veins with associated alteration haloes. Integrated geophysical studies were undertaken to determine the expression, location, and extent of these alteration zones. Aeromagnetic data show an extensive, magnetic æquietÆ zone over Karangahake and the southern Rahu Ridge that represents a zone of magnetite destruction resulting from hydrothermal alteration. Analytic signal data are used to define the boundary of this zone; the resulting 6 km2 area is elongate north-south with an irregular boundary. A detailed gravity survey over the area reveals a positive residual gravity anomaly, up to 30 gu in amplitude, over the Karangahake deposit. Density measurements on near-surface rocks give low values indicating that the source of this positive gravity anomaly must be deep; possible causative bodies include an igneous intrusion or dense sulfide mineralisation. To the west and east of the host Waipupu Formation, strong gravity gradients of 100 gu/km and 65 gu/km reflect the faulted boundary of the Hauraki Rift, and the edge of the Waihi Basin respectively. High resolution airborne radiometric data define a 2.2 km2 area of potassium enrichment. This area is elongate north-south and has an irregular boundary. It coincides approximately with the centre of the magnetic quiet zone and the peak of the gravity high, and correlates with known areas of intense mineralisation. Anomalously high potassium counts and elevated K/Th ratios correlate with areas of potassic alteration that have undergone K-metasomatism. Underexplored portions of this zone may indicate areas of gold-silver prospectivity. Combined geophysical data therefore reveal the extent of hydrothermal alteration, and the central zone of Kmetasomatism that is most likely to contain orebodies.

Introduction Guar gum is a natural nonionic polysaccharide. Guaran, the functional polysaccharide in guar gum is a chain of (1?4)-linked ß-D-mannopyranose units with a-D-galactopyranose units connected to the mannose backbone through (1?6) glycosidic linkages. The poly-mannose chain is randomly substituted with galactose units at a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 1.8-1.0 [1]. Cheng et al. reported that the molecular weight of natural guar gum is 1.935 • 106 [2]. Robinson et al. found that the molecular weights of five grades of commercial guar gums ranged from 4.4 • 105 to 16.5 • 105 [3]. Guar gum is frequently used as a depressant of naturally hydrophobic gangue minerals (e.g. talc) in the flotation of PGM-bearing ores, and according to Harris et al. a wide variety of modified guar gums are available for this application [4]. The Canadian potash industry utilizes natural guar gum as a blinder of water-insoluble slimes in the flotation of potash (sylvinite) ores, a process that is carried out in a saturated KCl/NaCl brine. The role of the polysaccharide is to prevent a primary amine collector from adsorbing onto these unwanted fine minerals. Hydrophobic interactions between basal cleavage planes and the polymer appear to be involved in guar gum adsorption on talc [5,6]. Liu and Laskowski stressed the importance of metal impurities on mineral surfaces that can serve as the active sites for polysaccharide adsorption [7]. This postulate was consistent with the later observation that, in addition to hydrogen bonding, the adsorption of guar gum onto talc was strongly dependent on the surface concentration of magnesium sites [8,9]. In this case the adsorption process was visualized as metal-polysaccharide complexation facilitated by the cis-configuration of the hydroxyl groups of mannose monomers. Hydrogen bonding and chemical interactions with metal sites were also suggested by Rath and Subramanian in their studies on guar gum adsorption on biotite mica [10]. In a recent study, Wang et al. demonstrated that hydrogen bonding is the main driving force behind guar gum adsorption onto talc [11]. Their data also show that the adsorption density of guar gum on alumina is about five times lower than the adsorption density on talc. Pawlik and Laskowski reported that the amount of guar gum adsorbed on illite was independent of ionic strength over a wide range of salt concentrations [12]. The adsorption density of the polysaccharide on illite did not measurably change with ionic strength from that of distilled water to about 50%-saturated KCl/NaCl potash brine (~3N KCl/NaCl). However, guar gum adsorption on dolomite dramatically decreased over the same range of ionic strengths, and no reliable explanation of that phenomenon was proposed [12]. The water structure-breaking or structure-making capabilities of background ions are usually ignored when discussing adsorption mechanisms of polymers. The concept of “structure breakers” and “structure makers” was first introduced by Gurney, and Frank and Wen who postulated that each ion is surrounded by three distinct regions of water structure [13,14]. In the first layer, water molecules are tightly bound to the ion. The second region extends farther away from the ion and is referred to as the region of structure breaking. Only at larger distances, where the ionic field is weak, water molecules form the “normal” ice-like structure. It is also now recognized that the first layer can be further divided into the primary and secondary hydration shells. Small, strongly hydrated ions reinforce the “normal” structure of water and the region of structure breaking disappears. In contrast, large less-hydrated ions disturb the ice-like structure and generate an extensive region of structure breaking. Experimentally, these two effects can readily be distinguished through viscosity measurements. Increasing concentrations of structure-breaking ions result in a decrease of the viscosity of aqueous solutions. On the other hand, increasing amounts of structure-makers significantly reduce the viscosity of water. Alkali metal cations form a sequence known as the Hofmeister series. The Project alignment initiates north of Pinerolo, along the State Road 23[S.S. 23] that is one of the principal arteries to the northwestern Alps where a number of Olympic events for the 2006 Winter Games will be held. The 3.5 km ring road bypasses the Porte habitat by traversing twice the Chisone River. It consists of the following principal structures [Figure 1]: San Martino bridge [130 m in four bays] Prarostino viaduct [130 m in four bays] Craviale tunnel [1055 m] Turinella bridge [a 50 m long bridge that connects the two tunnels] Turina tunnel [665 m] Malanaggio viaduct [350 m in 9 bays]. The road section is 13 m wide and is made up of two 3.75 m lanes, a hard shoulder [1.50 m wide] and a 1.25 m wide curb for each lane. The Project maximum velocity is 100 km/h.

High titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite. These slags contain approximately 85 per cent TiO2 and consist mainly of a M3O5 solid-solution phase. During cooling the slag can decrepitate to a fine particulate material, which decreases the value of the product. Based on X-ray diffraction analyses of the decrepitated slag after cooling, it was found that the M3O5 phase had almost disappeared. The disappearance of the M3O5 phase was linked to oxidation of the slag. A M6O11 phase formed in the decrepitated slag. It is postulated that decrepitation of high titania slag is caused by volume changes due to the oxidation of the M3O5 phase in the slag.

It is well known that the electrochemical precipitation of metals from aqueous solutions is conducted by the electrochemical standard potential scale. This scale indicates the order of nobility of different metals. Consequently, the standard potential scale shows the nocivity of metals when they are present as impurities in aqueous solutions containing metals. In the hydrometallurgy of cobalt, nickel and zinc are co-deposited during cobalt electrodeposition. Nickel has almost the same chemical, physical and electrochemical properties as cobalt. Furthermore, the electrochemical potential of nickel is relatively higher than that of cobalt. For this reason nickel is preferentially reduced at the cathode in the presence of cobalt. The presence of small amounts of zinc in solution leads to contamination of cobalt electro won. In spite of its lower electrochemical potential in comparison to cobalt, zinc is reduced on the cathode because of its higher hydrogen-overvoltage. But, in the hydrometallurgy of zinc, small amounts of cobalt present into solution will contaminates the zinc reduced at the cathode. This is easily explained by the fact that cobalt is more electropositive than zinc. The co-deposition mechanism of sulphur at the cathode is not yet well understood. Great attention has to be paid to the mechanism of co-deposition of sulphur during cobalt electrolysis..This work aimed to investigate the influence of some parameters on the co-deposition of nickel, zinc and sulphur during cobalt electrowinning. The following parameters have been investigated : Co2+ concentration in the electrolyte, current density and ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4 additions. It has been established that important nickel, zinc and sulphur co-deposition takes place at relatively low Co2+ concentration in solution. The behaviour of these elements with regard to the cathodic phenomena has been established.

Laboratory and pilot-scale test data have shown that the innovative feed presentation of the CrossFlow separator provides improved metallurgy when compared to traditional hindered-bed or teeter-bed classifiers. This design feature prevents excess water from entering the separation chamber and disrupting the overall fluidization flow rate within the teeter zone. Recent side-by-side industrial-scale evaluations have verified that this technology can improve overall efficiency, reduce the cut point of separation, and increase throughput capacity. This paper describes the important features that make this novel separator ideally suited for size classification and density concentration. Test data from heavy mineral, phosphate, and industrial mineral applications are also discussed.

Synthesis of fibrous Ni-Co alloy powders was achieved by thermal decomposition of precursor of complex Ni-Co oxalates solid solutions obtained via modified coprecipitation method among intimate mixing solution of NiCl2?6H2O , CoCl2?6H2O and H2C2O4?2H2O in the presence of surfactant polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and organic solvent ethanol. Scan electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), disperse energy X-ray analyses (EDX) were used to characterize the structure features and chemical compositions of the as-prepared fibres. The influences of decomposition conditions, including temperature, time, the flow rate of N2+H2, and the heating rate, on the morphology, average size and specific surface area of the Ni-Co alloy powders were investigated. It is found that a trend of the mutual alloying of nickel and cobalt: the formation of perfect solid solution for any compositions NixCo100-x was indicated and corresponding NixCo100-x alloys with fcc phase can be obtained under the optimal conditions.

Following an implementation period, the methodology is widely used for analysis and improvement, not only in the fields of production and maintenance, but also in other areas of the business such as supplies or energy management. The present paper describes, phase-by-phase, the project that was developed to improve the quality of converter slag through the application of Six Sigma techniques, from the initial set up to the final results obtained.

This paper describes the various factors that contribute to the maximum design pressures acting on box fronts and how these factors influence the mass and economy of box front steelwork. The influence of material density, rock size and moisture content on the incidence of hang ups and mud rushes in the rock pass is also highlighted. The loads acting on any box front are a function of several different parameters. These include natural, operational and excavational parameters. A case study analysis was carried out using UG2 ore and a typical box front structure to demonstrate the relationship between the mass of the box front and the material pressures resulting from variations in the above parameters. Based on the results of this case study, the required design mass of a side mounted box front for a rock pass containing platinumUG2 increases in (close to) linear proportion to % overbreak and is also linearly proportional to the pressure on the face of the box front beyond saturated conditions. The mass of the box front structure also doubles with a 100%increase in over-break which emphasises that a box hole excavation that is as neat as possible will yield a lighter and more econimical box front structure.

We report the studies of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM FC) and hydrogen storage materials at McMaster University for the last 14 years. From the initial investigation of ionic conduction mechanism to the revelation of the origin of non-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as well as the synthesis and characterization of high temperature polymer electrolytes, both experimental and theoretical works have been compiled for the fuel cell membranes. In addition to the discovery of suppressed ionic conduction in Electrode-Membrane Assembly (EMA) and novel hydrocarbon PEMs based on micro-emulsion, the first evidence of hydrogen adsorption saturation by carbon nano-tubes was also achieved, which has been the bottleneck for the application of PEM FC. Prior to our study, a number of controversial publications have claimed the hydrogen capacity of these materials to be between 0.1 to 10.0 wt.%, and none demonstrated a plateau of adsorption with pressure that is consistent with monolayer saturation. Others suggested that the tube bundle structure is opened under high pressure to enable higher adsorption on newly uncovered surfaces, but received no confirmation. Using our home made high-pressure instrument with in-situ electrical probes, we found that a plateau is nearly achieved at about 300 atm in the room temperature isotherm, and that nanotube bundles actually compress with pressure instead of splitting, using in-situ electrical measurements.

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

Over the past several decades, the use of cement-based grouts using ultra fine cement as a replacement for portland cement has begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts used in permeation grouting. The amount of information currently available on grouts made with ultrafine cement is limited. The authors used a previously developed field testing program to perform additional tests to evaluate the permeation performance of portland and ultrafine cement-based grouts. For the first time, the 2003 testing program included an attempt to determine the 28 day compressive strength of the sand permeated by the grout.

Hydraulic shovels are widely used for primary production in surface mining operations. Variability in material diggability, unstructured mining environments and limited space and operator inefficiency affect the performance of these shovel excavators. Dynamic models of the hydraulic shovels are essential for understanding and improving machine performance. This paper contributes to this subject area by advancing hydraulic shovel kinematics and dynamics using the modified Newton-Euler method. A virtual simulator is developed to simulate the hydraulic shovel performance in the ADAMS environment. The simulator is validated with data on shovel geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of a formation in a surface mining environment. The results indicate that a shorter digging time increases the shovel operating power requirements, and that the required peak power increases by 100% when the digging time reduces by 50%. Simulation results also show that a shallow trajectory facilitates the digging process, with 50% reduction in peak power requirements compared to a deep one. This simulator provides a powerful tool for performance monitoring, excavation process designs and structural optimization of hydraulic excavators. This work also forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for automated shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

The sillimanite group includes the aluminosilicate minerals sillimanite, kyanite and and alusite, all of which have the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5). This discussion also includes the closely related mineral, mullite(about Al6Si3O15), which, although rare in nature, is produced artificially for industrial use. All of the minerals in this group have a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high corrosion resistance. This makes them desirable for refractory applications, especially in the steel and foundry industries. Other uses include electrical insulators, abrasives and household ceramic products. The minerals in the sillimanite group decompose with an irreversible expansion at temperatures between 1,300° C and 1,600° C (2,372° F and 2,912° F). Sillimanite and and alusite have relatively small expansion on decomposition (4 percent to 6 percent) and, therefore, can be used as aggregates in refractory products. Kyanite’s expansion on decomposition is large (18 percent). So it is sometimes used to balance shrinkage of other materials such as clays in refractory mixtures. For applications requiring high-temperature volume stability, mullite is more desirable. As an additive, mullite improves resistance to creep and corrosion, and imparts thermal and electrical insulating properties.

On July 24, 2002, a nonfatal entrapment accident occurred at the Quecreek #1 Mine, Black Wolf Coal Company, when an active mining section inadvertently cut into a flooded abandoned mine. This incident, and the dramatic rescue which ensued, brought national attention to a common problem in the coal mining industry. Since 1995, there have been more than 100 inundations at coal mines in the United States. Unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete mapping of older abandoned mines is typically responsible. Serious problems associated with accidental discharges of fluid mine waste material (slurry) and water from coal refuse disposal facilities have resulted from similar causes. Recent problems related to the inaccurate location of old abandoned mine works have increased the interest in the use of conventional and emerging drilling and geophysical techniques for detection of air-filled and water-filled cavities. The United States Congress has committed significant funding toward investigating the applicability of these technologies. MSHA actively promotes the use of the best available technology to minimize the significant adverse safety and environmental consequences associated with unplanned breakthroughs and inundations. This paper provides background information and a general summary of the MSHA-sponsored field demonstration projects which are currently in progress. Potential benefits and limitations are discussed. The need for field verification/ground-truthing is emphasized. Under appropriate conditions, geophysical methods can be effectively integrated into a comprehensive field exploration program.
