Two types of automatic drilling controls, the Halliburton and the Hild, are now available and are coming into more or less general use in deep drilling. The primary function of both is to maintain a safe limit of torque on the drill pipe, this being accomplished by automatically controlling the weight or pressure on the cutting tool. Neither type will necessarily increase drilling speed, but by permitting advantage to be taken of "breaks" in the hole higher average cutting speed may be maintained. The control is essentially a safety device, and should be considered as such. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the merits of drilling controls, although the advantages over manual feed at the brake drum are obvious, but rather to point out some of the limitations. The Halliburton Control The Halliburton control is designed to operate during drilling through the agency of the draw works. Automatic and constant control. of the torque on the bit is governed by clutches on the control itself, and the line shaft to drum shaft drives on the draw works. In operations other than drilling the control is simply a jackshaft between prime mover and draw works. It is, of course, adaptable to any type of power. Because control of the torque on the bit is dependent upon the various ratios or clutch combinations available on the Halliburton control and the draw works, it follows that there are certain limitations in points of control. Table 1 shows the possible ratios which can be obtained with the control and a popular type of three-speed draw works, it being assumed that the highest possible gear combination-the combination which when engaged will suspend the least amount of weight-has a value of 1.00.

INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metal values can be divided into two broad categories: (a) Processes involving the treatment of high grade material (e.g. finely divided mineral concentrates); and (b) processes which treat lower grade material (ores, waste dumps, etc.). This discussion will be directed primarily toward the first category, but in either case a fundamental knowledge of the intrinsic kinetics and thermodynamics is necessary to understand the behavior of the system. The bulk of research efforts in the last decade along these lines has been aimed at the recovery of copper (1-8). However much information has also been reported on uranium (9, 10) , zinc (11) , cobalt and nickel (12, 13). More comprehensive reviews on these areas are also available (14). As discussed by Sepulveda and Herbst (15, 16) one of the most difficult problems facing process designers is the acquisition and scale-up of reliable information concerning the intrinsic kinetics of leaching systems. The scale-up or modeling of these multiparticle systems is far more complex than that of homogeneous ones. This is due to the numerous rate determining steps which are possible with heterogeneous reactions and the broad distribution of properties of a multiparticle feed such as particle size and mineralogical composition (16). In addition, other factors must also be considered such as interactions between particles, the anisotropic nature of individual particles, the effect of solution chemistry, and electrochemical phenomena. All of these factors must be taken into account, often simultaneously. The thrust of this paper will be to more closely examine how the factors mentioned above can be treated. A. Gittins and R. C. Gifkins (University of Mel-houvne)— Evidence from somewhat similar experiments to those described in this paper has led us to the conclusion that possibility 2) of the four listed on p. 319 is a description of what happens in grain boundary sliding. That is, sliding is limited by accommodation deformation, it being necessary to the Continuance of sliding that this accommodation should take place. An example of such accommodation, though probably not the most important, is fold formation at triple points. The evidence and arguments for this point of view are set out in Refs. 14 to 16. In particular, an experiment with a lead bicrys-tall5 seems to support point 2) rather than 3). In creep of this specimen it was found that at least 90 pct of the extension of a zone 0.3 mm wide at the boundary was supplied by sliding at the boundary. The sliding was localized in a region at the boundary very much smaller than 0.3 mm, in fact, in a region too narrow to resolve optically. In poly crystalline Specimens&apos; there appears to be a surface effect, as found by Rachinger," but it appears that this may not manifest itself at low strains. "Low strains" means <10 pct for a Pb-TI alloy, <2.5 pct for magnesium or "Magnox" A12 alloy, or <40 pct for a 0 brass. Up to this extension the sliding, measured by the mean vertical step at boundaries, is proportional to extension. We are able to say this with some confidence, since the error bars on our points are statistically derived. Our results would lead us to think that the error bars on other work, including that of Mullendore and Grant, are much too large at low strains to show this

It is convenient to have a consistent system of notation that will allow the representation of the entire range of complex stresses from hydrostatic compression to hydrostatic tension on plastic flow in a single diagram. Such a system is provided by making use of the fact that any complex stress system can be resolved into a hydrostatic tension or compression and a pure shear. Consider a stress system having the principal stresses This system can be resolved into a new system consisting of the three components and three pure shears. If Sm is positive, the net stress effect is hydrostatic tension; if it is negative, the effect is hydrostatic compression. In order to produce a systematic notation, a quantity that will be referred to as the "triaxial ratio" will be defined by the equation _ Sm Tr = Sm - Sm is given by Eq. IN the study of reactions occurring in liquid iron, alone or in contact with a liquid oxide or slag phase, it has been found that the experimental data over a limited range of concentration can in some cases be repre-sented satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression K - (p1)p1 (p2)p2 . (R1)r1(R2)r2 . where (P) denotes the concentration of a product and (R) the concentra-tion of a reactant in the reaction r1R1 + r2R2 + . . . Some of the reactions for which it holds are listed in Table 1. For others, however, the simple equation apparently does not hold. This has been attributed to an improper method of expressing concentration (for instance, weight per cent instead of mol fraction); or it has been supposed that the solutions are not ideal in the sense that the activity of a com-ponent is not proportional to its true mol fraction, But it may be that the problem has been oversimplified by neglecting some molecular species actually present; that is, by considering only the ostensible simple com-ponents and thus leaving out of account possible compound formation. It is the purpose of the present paper to point out how, in a group of related cases, a reasonable consistent assumption relative to the presence of a compound makes it possible to express the experimental data satis-factorily by the simple equilibrium expression when this compound is taken into account, and to bring into harmony data referring to different reactions in liquid iron. There are several a priori reasons for believing that solutions in liquid iron should not deviate far from ideality, provided that the concentration of solute is not too great and is expressed in proper terms. The factors that commonly lead to nonideality in systems at ordinary temperature as ionization or the occurrence of polar and nonpolar molecules-are presumably less effective in metal and in slag systems at high temperature. A study has hem made of the formation of annealing textures in an 18-8 austenitic stainless steel (Type 304L) from various deformation textures obtained by rolling at different temperatures. When the deformation texture is a mixture of the ferritic type and the brass type owing to the pres -ence of both martensitic ferrite and retained aus-tenite in the specimen, recrystallization takes place by the growth of the existing austenite phase. In a previous report,&apos; it was shown that the rolling texture of austenitic stainless steel (Type 304L) changed gradually from the brass type to the copper type with increasing temperature of deformation above 200°C. These changes are similar to those in high-purity silver2,3 and electrolytic copper;4 a brass-type texture is favored at low rolling temperatures, whereas a copper-type texture is favored During the course of rolling -texture transition from the brass type to the copper type, the subsequent recrystallization textures change accordingly. The orientation relationship between the annealing textures and the various rolling textures, being consistent with previous observations on various fcc metals, can be described as [Ill] rotations of approximately 25 to 40 deg. Carhide precipitation may influence the annealing textures. at high rolling temperatures. Furthermore, the annealing textures in high-purity silver5 and electrolytic copper4 were found to depend entirely on the prior deformation texture. From a copper-type rolling texture a strong cube texture will form upon recrystallization, whereas from a brass-type rolling texture the annealing texture will be quite different from the cube orientation. In an earlier comm~nication,6 the formation of a strong cube texture in 18-8 austenite stainless steels (Types 304 and 304L) was reported briefly by the authors. The history of Niagara Falls, as currently told, is simple, and by that very simplicity it has been rendered plausible. AS the story runs, the Falls were once situated at Lewiston, 7 miles to the north of their present site; and, since all the rocks in this section are alternate hard and soft strata, the waters acting readily upon the soft shales caused their removal, and the overlying hard lagers, deprived of support, broke down under the weight of the large volume of water that rushed over them; and this erosive action has sent the edge of the fall more and more southward, until it now has excavated the seven-mile gorge between Lewiston and the village of Niagara Falls. (See Fig. 1.) As early as 1790" we find this theory advanced in a description of this region; and it has been practically endorsed by subsequent observers, the most prominent of whom was Prof. James Hall, the State Geologist of New York, who surveyed the Falls in 1841, and gave the most exact description of their surroundings in the publications of the State Survey.? Not until 1883 was the correctness of the accepted theory of the Falls questioned.‡ The geology of the basins of the Great. Lakes, as elucidated by Newberry,§ Speneer,ll and others, has added largely to a clearer understanding of the life-history of the Falls. The investigators have shown us that Lake Erie, as a lake, is, geologically speaking, quite young; that its valley was excavated in pre-glacial times by a series of rivers; and that the Maumee, Sandusky, Cuyaboga, Alleghany and other rivers carried the drainage of the surrounding

THE remarkable outflow of natural gas recently developed in Western Pennsylvania, and along the valley of the Ohio and its tributaries, has called attention to an important series of patents for improvements in glass-fnrnaces and the manufacture of glass, which the brothers Siemens have made since 1872. The basement-patent of this series, is No. 127,806 of the U. S. Patent office, and is of date June 11th, 1872. This has been followed by eleven other patents (including one re-issue), all for improvements in glass-furnaces, or methods of manufacture, of which the latest is of date July 11th, 1882. Nine of these patents were issued in 1880-82. The following is the list of these patents, in order of dates, viz.: 1872. June 11th. No. 127,806 (U. S. office), Improvement in glass-furnaces; 17 sheets drawings, 5 pages text. This is the basement-patent. 1877. April 17th. No. 139,800. It has been known for many years that the alloy containing 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. aluminum can be hardened, like steel, by quenching from a suitable temperature, and that the hardened alloy can be softened again by annealing or drawing the temper. It does not seem to be generally appreciated, however, that the effect of the first slight reheating after quenching is actually increased hardness, the softening effect not taking place until a certain temperature of "drawing" has been exceeded. This paper gives the results of a few experiments on various specimens of cast 10 per cent. aluminum bronze, quenched for maximum hardness, and subsequcntly annealed at different temperatures. The hardness measurements were made with both a scleroscope and a standard Swedish Brinell machine; some peculiarities of the scleroscope test on this material are described. The author is not aware of many previous investigations of the hardness of this alloy when quenched and drawn, but two important papers on the subject should be mentioned. The earliest was by Portevin and Arnou,1 in which it was stated that tempering quenched 10 per cent. aluminum bronze at 400" C. increased the hardness as compared with the quenched untempered alloy and that reheating above that temperature &apos; was necessary to obtain any softening effect. A later paper was by Seidell and Horvitz,2 who mentioned Portevin and Arnou&apos;s work, but did not report any increase in hardness obtained

MaNY questions arising in the work of the mining engineer may be solved quickly and with suffcient accuracy by the methods of descriptive geometry; but, unfortunately, this subject is more often considered from a mathematical view-point than as an effective tool for solving practical problems. Some of the principles involved are merged into the ordinary operations of mechanical drawing, and are used unconsciously by the engineer in his every-day work. The rest are stowed away on the book-shelf with his forgotten or rarely-used college text-books. One reason for this condition of " innocuous desuctude " may lie in the uifortunate and often cumbersome notation which it has been found necessary to introduce. If some of these principles can be recalled to the engineer&apos;s attenti011 in terms of&apos; every-day use they may prove of practical hearing. Recently, in talking with several mining engineers, I used some of the drawing-room methods of a machine-designer, to the evident surprise of those around me. These men were perfectly familiar with the methods, but their application to mining-work had not occurred to them. At their suggestion the present paper is offered, not in ally way as a treatise, but merely to suggest a certain point of view, in hope that it may lead others far more familiar with mining-problems to pursue the subject further. I. To Find the Strike. As the simplest and most fundamental problem, let it be required to find the strike of a vein when the location and elevation of three points on the outcrop are known. It mill be assumed for the present that the rein is a plane.

In 1961 it became increasingly more evident that significant technological changes must be made in minerals beneficiation. The status quo in technology in today&apos;s competitive markets will not be tolerated. Higher productivity, greater recoveries and newer and better products must be sought and incorporated with lower operating costs. In other words, "when you build a new mill, don&apos;t build an old mill." Recommended reading for proof of the vital necessity of new methods and techniques is in the September 1961 issue of MINING ENGINEERING. The article by one of MBD&apos;s cherished and true veterans, E. H. Rose, is entitled "Iron Ore: The BIG Picture". Because of new beneficiation methods for iron ores, nearly 47 million tons of plus 60% iron concentrates will be produced and another 40.1 million tons of capacity will be under construction or committed. Thus in a relatively short period, 87 million tons of this high-grade iron concentrate with record low silica will be available. As Mr. Rose also points out, "in gross tons, without allowance for better grade, this is the equivalent of almost exactly two-thirds of all iron ore used for all purposes in the U.S. and Canada in the peak years of 1953 or 1957." Needless to say, improved mineral beneficiation methods have had far more reaching effects than just the production of higher grade iron concentrate.

The writer apologizes for presenting this very elementary analysis of one aspect of proration, but a search of the literature failed to disclose any concrete illustrations of the effect of various proration formulas upon the allowable oil produced by tracts of different sizes. Many engineers have doubtless made somewhat similar calculations and are fully acquainted with the results. The various allocation formulas that are in use are based on one or more of the following factors: (1) wide-open well potential, (2) potential through an orifice, (3) uniform well allowable, (4) acreage, (5) sand thickness, (6) bottom-hole pressure, (7) productivity index, and (8) volumetric displacement. Of these, the unrestricted potential formula, or open-flow test, and the uniform well allowable are commonly regarded by engineers as those least likely to give each producer his proportionate share of the oil or gas, as represented either by acreage or by sand thickness, or both, except when the wells are located on tracts of large size. Unless the mechanical equipment that may be used during the potential test and the method of taking the test are both specified, the net result of the potential formula is to practically force the operators to use special equipment and adopt special procedures prior to and during the potential test, so as to secure the largest possible allowables. Much ingenuity and skill have been devoted to this,problem, but the general effect is to permit excessive allowables for very small tracts, and stimulate unnecessary drilling. It is interesting to compare some of the high yields from the Wilcox horizon at Oklahoma City with each other, as an illustration of the effect of an allocation factor based solely on potential (Table 5). One of the glaring instances is a well on a ½-acre lease, which had produced, as of September 1936, at the rate of almost 3,000,000 bbl. per acre. This is at least twice as many barrels as could have been present under the property if the reservoir had consisted of a tank of oil 200 ft, deep and 56 acre in area. Numerous combinations of acreage, potential, bottom-hole pressure, sand thickness, etc., have been proposed and are in use in various fields.

THE method developed and used in this laboratory for the production of metallic uranium of such purity that it is ductile and can be cold-worked to fine wire or thin sheet by rolling has already been described1. It consists, briefly, in the electrolysis of potassium uranous fluoride (KUF6) in a molten bath composed of equal parts of sodium and calcium chlorides. The bath is contained in a graphite crucible, electrically heated to about 775° C., the crucible serving as the anode for electrolysis. The uranium deposits in finely divided form mixed with salts upon a molybdenum cathode suspended axially in the crucible. Upon completion of the electrolysis the cathode is removed and cooled, the deposit broken and leached to remove salts. The metal powder is washed with water and dilute acetic acid and dried in vacuo to reduce oxidation. Suitable amounts are then pressed into pellets and heated in vacuo by high-frequency induction, using a thoria crucible. The uranium melts and flows away from the pellet, leaving a shell, which is largely oxide. In general, this method produced a satisfactory metal, although at times the uranium was not ductile. The investigations recorded here were made to find the cause of this embrittlement. It was known that the metal generally contained carbon, derived from disintegration of the graphite crucible in which electrolysis is conducted, in amounts dependent upon the thoroughness of washing the metal powder. Accordingly, analyses of several samples, both ductile and brittle, were made by combustion and absorption of CO2 in Ascarite, using air instead of oxygen to reduce the temperature and rate of oxidation. Several of these metals were made with special precautions to reduce carbon content. The results show no relationship between ductility and carbon content in the range investigated (Table 1).

H. H. Hausner (Sylvania Electric Products Inc., Bayside, N. Y.)—I tested the 18-8 stainless steel powder described by Grobe and Roberts and the results were excellent. The powder was compacted and sintered in purified hydrogen to a very low density (approximately 20 pct and more porosity). Where the other powders show very little ductility when sintered to such a low density, the described stainless steel was surprisingly high in ductility. I would appreciate it if the authors could give us some data on a similar powder but without silicon and also data on 430 stainless steel powder. H. S. Kalish (Sylvania Electric Products lnc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—I should like to verify the excellent results obtained by Grobe and Roberts with their pre-alloyed stainless steel powder. It seems to me, however, that their data are conservative and that even better densities and higher tensile strength can be obtained with these powders by the selection of proper particle size fractions. The accompanying data were obtained by sintering compacts pressed from the powder made by Vanadium-Alloys Steel Co. to 0.8 in. in diam about % in. high in a cylindrical double action die without the use of lubricant. The compacts were sintered for 1 hr at 2370°F in hydrogen purified by passing it through a Deoxo unit (palladium catalyst) and a Lectrodryer. Even the density obtained using the as-received (—100 mesh) compacted at 40 tsi was quite high as was the hardness. This indicates that by increasing the sintering temperature slightly above 2350°F the coining and subsequent secondary sintering operation can be avoided. With the — 325 mesh fraction, however, very much higher density can be obtained and a high hardness. I have no tensile data to present, but I feel that it is not too optimistic to expect. that unusually high tensile strengths and good ductility can be obtained in this sintered material on the basis of the density and hardness data. The sintered stainless steel made by the above-described methods came out of the furnace very bright and clean. The purified hydrogen atmosphere is important in sintering stainless steel to reduce the oxide present in the powder. The result of such a sintering is good densification and good ductility of the sintered product. G. A. Roberts (authors&apos; reply)—We are greatly indebted to Messrs. Hausner and Kalish for their discussions of our paper. Their encouraging remarks are greatly appreciated and their confirmatory data will do much to add to the value of the paper. At the present time it is impossible to provide complete data on a similar stainless steel powder without silicon, but we do know that, in general, the properties are slightly inferior. Data on such a powder and on other stainless steel types are to be published in the near future.

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd.: (1) The Sullivan Concentrator, Chapman Camp, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the, St. Eugene Concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the. Tadanac (Customs) Concentrator,Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Values in all ores treated are as minerals of some or all of the metals -lead, zinc, gold or silver. Occasional customs ores contain small amounts of copper. Sulfide iron content of ores treated varies from a FIG. 1.-THE SULLIVAN CONCENTRATOR, CHAPMAN CAMP, B. C. (NEAR KIMBERLEY, B. C.). low figure in some ores to 38 per cent. iron in Sullivan ore. Gangue minerals vary considerably. A few customs ores are somewhat oxidized and as a result present difficulties. Flotation equipment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sullivan Concentrator. In this paper I will not detail treatment nor equipment in any of our plants but will describe special features in, or in connection with, all of them. I will then deal with flotation reagents, describing our use of each of them, particularly where differing from general practice. I will conclude with comments on special subjects related to differential-flotation.

REGARDING the results of preferential flotation at Cananea, Weinig has stated that "The concentrating mill of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Mexico, furnishes an excellent example of modern flotation practice. The complete figures are given because they present so forcibly the advantages of modern selective flotation."&apos; L. 0. Howard notes that "Perhaps the outstanding example so far published of improvements in results through the use of selective flotation is that at Cananea, Mexico."2 The following notes indicate the conditions under which the results were obtained at Cananea; also the effect of preferential flotation at the concentrator and at the smelter. In the majority of cases the full benefit of selective flotation is not fully realized, as the concentrates are shipped from the mill to smelters owned by other companies. The saving made at a certain concentrator by this method of flotation may be well understood but the saving resulting at the smelter from the results of preferential flotation at the mill is not so apparent, as the data are contained in the smelting records of some other company. Even at the smelter the great gains following preferential flotation may not be noted, as a variety of ores and concentrates from various sources are received and the difference from the changed concentrator operations of a certain mill may be obscured. As noted by Professor Weinig and Professor Howard, the results obtained at Cananea brought about a veritable metallurgical revolution at the smelter.

Discussion of the paper of S. E. Bretherton, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1481 to 1487. S. E., BRETHERTON, San Francisco, Cal.:-Since preparing my paper, our chemist, F. L. Wilson, has been experimenting with Leadville, Colo., oxidized zinc ore and Leadville zinc sulphides containing lead, operating upon 40-1b. lots at a time. His results on Leadville sulphides are as follows: The raw ore contained a trace of gold, 5.04 oz. of silver, 19.1 per cent of zinc, and 7.24 per cent of lead. After roasting the ore contained a trace of gold, 5.72 oz. of silver, 0.75 per cent of copper, 21.7 per cent of zinc, and 8.29 per cent of lead. The loss in weight by leaching was 38.8 per cent. The extraction was 42.8 per cent of the copper, 80.6 per cent of the zinc, 7.1 per cent of the lead, 0.64 per cent of the silver, and no gold. The little .silver that is extracted would be thrown down with the copper when precipitating it from the zinc and both thrown hack into the residue to be smelted. There would be no trouble in smelting the residue with nearly all the sulphur eliminated and containing less than 7 per cent. of zinc. On zinc carbonates containing silicates the results are not satisfactory. H. O. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :¬The paper by Mr. Bretherton upon the application of ammonia and carbonic acid to the recovery of zinc as oxide from roasted sulphide ore is of interest to me, as the first installation of the Schnabel process for the extraction of zinc from a mixture of zinc oxide, lead oxide (with some cupric oxide), and pellets of enriched lead, produced in steaming liquated zinc-silver-lead crust of the Parkes process, was made at Lautenthal, Harz mountains, where I was chemist. In that capacity I carried out numerous experiments on the Schnabel process, was active in the erecting of the plant, and later had charge of it. After the Lautenthal plant had been in operation for some time a similar one was built at Hoboken-les-Anvers, but both have been abandoned, as the wet process could not compete with the distillation of the liquated zinc-silver-lead crust, now used universally in the Parkes process.

IT is a well-known fact that under similar conditions a ton of pig iron can be made from any ore with less fuel when charcoal is used than when coke or anthracite is employed for heating. The cause of this superiority is entirely undiscovered, and no explanation has yet been offered which has won even temporary acceptance. Such as they are the hypotheses heretofore presented are of two general kinds, and they come from those two divisions of the working force which are so often antagonistic in all professions, the scientific and the practical men. The theory of the scientific men is drawn from the chemical reactions which are known to go on in the furnace, and it is well expressed in a recent paper by Prof. Akerman, of the Stockholm (Sweden) School of Mines. It makes the superiority of charcoal as a fuel in the blast furnace to depend upon its quick and thorough reduction of carbonic acid. This property belongs to charcoal in virtue of its porous structure. Its cells have a diameter of only one twenty-four hundredth of an inch, and one grain of charcoal has been computed to have a surface of two and four-tenths square feet. According to the theory in question, carbonic acid is formed by the first impact of the air upon the fuel; but in charcoal furnaces the acid is immediately reduced to oxide by taking the necessary amount of carbon into combination, and the gas reaches its highest reducing power even in the near vicinity of the tuyeres. Coke, being harder, does not produce so strong a reducing gas in that part of. the furnace. This paper describes a method of measuring initial and long-term deformations which occur in the medium surrounding mine accessways, and discusses the importance of this type of measurement in assessing support-problem areas. Delineated are (1) description of the rock-deformation monitoring equipment, (2) results of two field tests which monitored rock deformation around 4-foot-diameter raise bores, and (3) a numerical-analysis (finite-element) technique to correlate theoretical with experimental results. Instrumentation developed provided the sensitivity and resolution needed to measure rock deformation around a full-scale raise bore during excavation. Results of the tests conducted at the Lucky Friday mine, Mullan, Idaho, show the relationships between (a) de- formation vs. time, and (b) deformation vs. bit progress. Based on theoretical evaluation of the initial deformation, the medium appeared to behave elastically. Using an estimated field stress of 5,500 psi and Poisson&apos;s ratio of 0.20, the gross modulus of elasticity of the rock was calculated to range from 3.15 to 6.0 x 106 psi (with one outlier which was determined to be >12 x l06 psi).

THE SOUTHWEST MINING SECTION of the National Safety. Council held a well attended two-day conference at Globe, Ariz., March 19 and 20; followed by two days of mine-rescue maneuvers at the Old Dominion mine in cooperation with the Globe-Miami District Mine Rescue and First Aid Association and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. C. L. Colburn of the Bureau had general charge of the arrangements and was chairman of the conference. All sessions were held in the Old Dominion Library.
