THE industrial development of the United States has been stimulated by the presence of high-grade iron ore in the Lake Superior district. These great deposits have been susceptible to economical extraction and are conveniently located for cheap lake vessel transportation to the great consuming centers. The district furnishes from 80 to 85 per cent of the iron ore annually consumed in the United States, and a full understanding of the available supply of this great commodity is so important that it is well to consider whether or not the industrial supremacy and national independence attained as a result of the abundance of cheap ore are permanent. The enormous deposits of high-grade ore available in the Lake Superior district have been the foundation upon which the vast industrial structure of the steel and allied industries has been built. It is extremely important to the country as a whole, and especially to those States and communities now dependent on Lake Superior ore for their prosperity, that their industries shall retain the particular advantages with which they are now endowed, and that a generous supply of high-grade raw material be available for their consumption at a satisfactory cost. The steel industry is so basic and fundamental that any fluctuation in the cost of its finished products as determined by the supply and cost of the raw materials involved in its manufacture will necessarily affect the business of a wide variety of industries which are dependent on it.

The reduction of titanium tetrachloride to trichloride can be achieved by employing hydrogen and electric arcs. It is possible to produce melts containing up to 50% TiCk in the eutectic mixture of LiCl/KCl by striking a D.C. arc at the surface in the presence of hydrogen and TiCl. vapour. If the electrode IS made to just penetrate the surface of the salt mixture, a hot zone results from the' high resistance contact with both lower chlorides and sintered titanium may be produced. The sintered metal forms just below the melt surface while the trichloride forms at the gaslIiquid junction.The "hotspot cathode" appears to offer a solution to the problem of producing coherent deposits as the spong'e metal can 'be continuously withdrawn in a similar manner to the "calcium process".INTRODUCTIONConsiderable interest has been shown for some years in the possible development of a cheap electrolytic process for the extraction of titanium metal, since a method using simple materials and cheap electric power would materially reduce the cost of production. Even when cheap starting materials are used, however, there exist several general difficulties in the operation of plant which both limit the speed of production and increase the cost of the product. It happens that most of the techniques so far tried produce a powder as cathodic deposit, and when this is the case the following difficulties arise:1. The whole contents of the bath must be treated with solvent in order to extract the 'metal powder which may itself tend to oxidise, and thus become contaminated.2. Fine metal powders, which often contain residual entrained salts, are less easy to consolidate by arcmelting than metal sponge.

Freeman, the English historian, said that he had learned from Macaulay "never to be afraid of using the same word or name over and over again if by that means anything could be added to clearness or force. Macaulay never goes. on, like some writers, talking about ' the former ' and 'the latter ', 'he ', 'she ', 'it), and 'they’, through clause after clause, while his reader has to look back to see which of several persons it is that is so darkly referred to". He might have learned also from Macaulay that a preposition makes a feeble ending for a serious statement. How often do you hear 'the former' and 'the latter' in conversation? Good conversation is a guide not to be disdained. When you must use 'the latter ', do not confuse it with 'the last '. Cheap labor, cheap fuel, and cheap transport are essential, the latter [last] being particularly important in base-metal mining. The apparatus may be used to determine such gases as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, oxides of nitrogen and some others, as well as sulphur dioxide. In the case of the latter two, etc. The two last mentioned are "sulphur dioxide" and "some others". He should have stated which two, and he should have avoided that wretched phrase "in the case of ". Pinning may be partly prevented by use of chalk, oil, or turpentine. The latter [last] is beat. "Partly prevented" is a poor phrase. 'Prevented' is a word that does not lend itself readily to modification. He means ' checked ' or 'corrected '. These steps are necessary to produce the gas, crude oil, and ammonia, the latter [last] of which is in solution in the water obtained along with the oil.

CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

THE basis on which the modern metallurgical industry is operated is the endeavour to attain maximum return in purchasing power for the least expenditure of energy. This has always been the general objective of the industry, as of all industries. In recent years, however, it has received a new emphasis. Today, as never before, increased attention is being directed to the detailed study of plant operations and the application of scientific knowledge and of business principles in order to achieve the maximum efficiency. This new emphasis is the result in large part of the new problems and conditions with which the industry has been confronted, chief among which are the following: (l) Development of new ore-bodies and the treatment of complex ores. (2) Necessity of achieving a greater degree of purity in some of the metals in order to meet the newly discovered demands for some of the industrial metals. (3) Discovery of new markets for many of the metals, either in pure form or in the form of alloys. ( 4) Change in values, absolute or relative, of some of the important metals. (5) Increasing scale of investment in expensive plant and equipment, which makes imperative most efficient utilization if total unit costs are to be kept to a minimum. (6) Increasing scale of operations in some important branches of the industry, which also makes essential maximum efficiency in organization, administration, and operation. The success with which the metallurgical industry has met the problems created by these changing conditions has been due primarily to the following factors: (1) Results of research and experimental work carried on by universities, government laboratories, and many private corporations in the industry itself. (2) Closet study of every detail of plant operation, both from the technological and from the economic point of view, with the object of increasing plant efficiency. (3) Interchange of information and experience amongst the operating companies. It is only by the concerted efforts of numerous investigators and experimenters that the underlying fundamentals of plant operations can be learned. The exchange of results permits their easy assembly and correlation with maximum benefit to the whole industry. Unnecessary duplication of research and experimental work is avoided and the industry as a whole is able to reap the fruits of this work with the maximum of-speed and efficiency. (4) Advances made in recent years in so-called 'scientific management' in industry as a whole and the application of the principles learned to the metallurgical industry. A review of the modern trends in extractive non-ferrous metallurgical processes illustrates the afore-mentioned new conditions and problems, and gives some idea of the methods by which they have been and are being surmounted.

Occasionally additives are used in the wet processing of iron ore tailings and slurries, for examples, in the thickening of tailings with flocculant to recover process water, and in the smooth pumping of concentrated slurries. They can mitigate slurry behavioural issues that could significantly affect the plant operation and production. The nature of iron ore business requiring the plant to have a high throughput to be economical, large amounts of slurries are therefore processed every day. The quantity of additives needed will correspondingly be large and so are the associated costs. This could have a significant impact on the plant profitability. If additives are used they must be very costeffective. NaOH is among the lowest cost chemicals available, at ~US$400 per ton. In this paper we will look at use of composite additives involving phosphate compounds with NaOH added to reduce the cost, for the control of iron ore slurries rheology. The NaOH worked synergistically with the phosphate compounds. The effectiveness of these composite additives in viscosity reduction can be neutralised by another cheap additive such as lime or a Ca(II)-based salt turning the slurries back to being a paste. Tailings paste is an ideal material for safe storage in the dam. These composite additives can also be used to facilitate the recovery of iron ore at commercial grade from tailings (Leong, 2020a, 2021a).

INTRODUCTION Preparation of this article, at the request of the Committee on papers, has been undertaken in the hope that it may stir up helpful discussion and constructive criticism. The Canadian mining industry is in the dumps and there is no use trying to deny the fact; nor does it help to say that other industries are in as bad or a worse condition. Let us face the situation honestly and see just how serious it is. The entire financial and industrial world is in a state of depression. The gravity of the case is no doubt exaggerated by contrast with the wave of optimism and false prosperity which pre-ceded it. The prevailing gloom and pessimism are just as irrational as was the former super-optimism. As far as we mining engineers are concerned, the causes are quite beyond our control, and it is the effect upon our own industry which interests us most. This effect is an accumulation of mineral products with consequent depression in price to a point where profits have almost, if not quite, disappeared. Whether this accumulation of stocks is the result of over-production or under-consumption is difficult to say, but it would seem likely that there is a combination of the two. The introduction of selective flotation has brought about a large increase in the production of zinc, a moderate increase in the production of lead, and a comparatively small increase in copper. It has turned relatively small mines into great producers, as in the case of the Sullivan, revived expiring mines like La Cananea, and brought-in new ones like Flin Flon

AMONG the curious results of the recent advance of prices in the iron trade of the United States, one of them at least is to be regarded as of great importance. I allude to the utilization of mill cinder as a cheap and almost costless substitute for high-priced iron ores in many blast furnaces, situated within easy reach of such raw material. It has been, with but few exceptions, the practice in this country, based upon tradition rather than upon authority or European precedents, to waste this material on 'account of its high proportion of silicic and phosphoric acids, although known to contain more iron than most ores, and although also known to be sometimes applied to the blast furnace in greater or less quantities without serious detriment to the iron for specific purposes. While in use to a limited extent in the Hocking Valley and Hanging Rock iron regions of Ohio for several years, its use in Western Pennsylvania has only become general of late, under the exigencies of high prices and a short supply of ore. Especially has mill cinder largely entered into the stock of furnaces attached to rolling mills in and about Pittsburgh. Under such circumstances the cinder pig has been paddled on the premises, and the malleable iron produced has been unexpectedly good. Cautiously as at first mill cinder has been applied, it is evident that the temptation to use it freely is a strong one whenever the commercial rates for high-class ores are out of proportion to the general conditions of the iron trade, as sometimes happens in this country, especially as the free use of it is apparently justified by the quality of the iron produced from this cheap and abundant material. Indeed the consumption of cinder pig has., not been wholly confined to mills using up the production of furnaces belonging to the same plant. One furnace at least on the Ohio, at Covington, for several' months has been making foundry pig from "all cinder." The iron has gone into the general trade. Steel for any large structure must be imported, the Hanyang works being entirely unable to supply local demand. The United States Steel Products Co. has warehouses and small stocks at Shanghai and at normal times there are heavy importations from Europe. It is difficult to obtain any accurate index of prices, but comparison of customs valuations with Pittsburgh quotations shows angles, bars and plates to have averaged $10 gold per ton higher in China in 1914, while on galvanized and tinned plates the excess was- $38 per ton. The margin since has been greater. Previous to the war little machinery was manufactured in China. There were shipyards at Shanghai and at Hong Kong which built a small number of engines, and small foundry and repair works are found at a number of ports. Their capacity was limited and the difficulties and delays incident to transport in China so numerous that in practice every important mine has a small foundry, boiler works, and machine shop. This must be taken into account in plans for work in the country. While skilled workmen can be found it is to be noted that most of them have been trained

THE members arrived at Ticonderoga, N. Y., at noon, Tuesday, October 15th, and were received by Mr. Cyrus Butler, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements. During the afternoon the works of the American Graphite Company and the Horicon Iron Company were visited under the guidance of Mr. Butler, President of both companies, and of Mr. William Hooper, Superintendent. An excursion was then made, in carriages, to old Fort Ticonderoga, on Lake Champlain, after which the party were driven to the Rogers Rock Hotel, on Lake George. The first session of the Institute was held in the parlor of time hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, President of the Institute, opened the proceedings with the following address: I shall ask your attention, this evening, to a few reflections upon the subject of mining engineering as a profession in the United States, its past, its present, and its future, and its duties and oppor¬tunities with reference to the proper development of our great min¬eral resources. Thirty years ago, there were scarcely any mining engineers in this country, and but few in England, and there were no institutions where young men could be educated for the profession in the Eng¬lish language. France and Germany have been able for about a century to boast of mining schools of a high character, that number among their graduates such men as Humboldt, Weisbach, Rittinger, Combes, and Gruner. Of the few we then had worthy of the name of "mining engi¬neer," some had studied in the continental academies, and others were graduates in the school of practical experience, and had learned their profession in mines and smelting-works. Their work con¬sisted principally in making surveys and maps of mines and mining properties, geological reports, and analyses of ores ; but the mining engineer whom we often meet with now, who has studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy, geology, mechanics, and drawing; who is more or less familiar with machinery and its construction, and with the practical management of mines or smelting-works, and who is an expert in some one branch of his profession, would have been very difficult if not impossible to find in the United States. NOWHERE can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, acid as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone.

It hardly needs to be repeated that if coal is to continue as America’s premier source of cheap energy, it is absolutely necessary that the carbon dioxide from its combustion somehow be sequestered. A promising method proposed to accomplish this is the “indirect” carbonation of serpentine in a concentrated magnesium chloride brine. Indirect carbonation could be also applied to precipitate magnesium in lateritic nickel processing: this would not only solve magnesium-control problems in laterite hydrometallurgy, but also reduce its energy requirements and create CO2-sequestration credits. Fifty-five percent of the electricity generated in the United States comes from coal-fired power plants, and American coal reserves can last over 500 years at 1990-level consumption1. Coal is therefore both abundant and cheap: it could (and in fact probably will) continue to be an affordable source of energy, both for producing electricity and as a feedstock for liquid hydrocarbon production by Fischer-Tropsch reactions. As a result, it is important to find a workable method of permanently sequestering CO2.

WHAT are the reasons for the present public interest in the synthetic fuel industry, an interest which has culminated in the recommendation of the Secretary of the Interior that we start at once on a nine billion dollar program of construction? Three separate factors seem to have combined to create this pressure. First are recurrent seasonal and spot shortages of gasoline, fuel oil, and natural gas. Second is the international outlook, which forces us to face the possibility of war, with all that means in the way of increased call on our domestic resources and interference with our foreign commerce. The shortages we have experienced are superficially the result of lack of transportation, but basically they reflect a rapidly rising demand which has outstripped the expansion of productive facilities of all kinds. Not only oil and gas, but steel, coal, automobiles, and meat are temporarily in short supply for much the same reasons. The military problem has both long-range and short-range aspects, but the immediate necessity is to create reserve capacity in the United States to supply perhaps 2,000,000 barrels daily additional liquid fuel in time of war.

The goal of this work was to select an appropriate electrode for dummy load of diesel engine in fully salt-water in the DESA factory. The electrochemical corrosion rate of general structural steel, commercial pure aluminum and cathode copper calculated as weighting, volumetric and commercial in fully salt-water by city power. After several tests and then applying the fuzzy logic method, it was determined that general structural steel is the best selection for this purpose.

"Aqueous oxidation of phosphite ions to phosphate ions with dissolved oxygen was examined at 80° C and pH 4.5 mainly from the stichiometric point of view. Dissolved oxygen alone can not oxidize sodilim phosphite in aqueous solution, but when sulfur dioxide is coexistent, cooperative oxidation for both sulfite and phosphite can occur in aqueous solution. Sulfur dioxide itself is well known as a reducing agent, but it also reacts as an oxidation-promoting agent for other species under a certain condition. So sulfur dioxide is· a promising cheap reagent for waste phosphite processing.IntroductionIn a liquid-phase oxidation reaction using the dissolved oxygen gas, the eoexistence of a copper salt is required generally. Recently, it was reported that the oxidation reaction progressed by using mixed gas of sulfur dioxide and oxygen without the copper catalysis, and the attention has been collected1·3). The present authors also noticed the phenomenon since the early time and have been studying on the reaction mechanism of sulfur dioxide in liquid phase oxidation 4l. It was found that; by using the SO2-O2 mixed gas, the oxidation of phosphite ions to phosphate ions proceeded efficiently in sulfuric acid solutions. In the present report, the applicability of SO2-O2 mixed gas as a cheap oxidizing agent to the industrial processing of the waste solution of electroless nickel· plating is investigated. Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

THE dire effects of rapidly vanishing natural resources, widespread unemployment, and increased debt and taxation in recent years have challenged Canadians to produce a practical solution to these national economic problems. In more recent months, wars and rumours of war have indicated, among other things, the need for better control of our mineral wealth. The erection of a smelter on the lower mainland coast of British Columbia, treating all Western ores, and such ores as it will be found advisable to import, will make an important contribution toward a solution of these problems. It is believed that the ores tributary justify a smelter of major proportions. A stock-taking to confirm this can be made with reason-able accuracy in a short time, and this should be undertaken without delay. Enough general information is, however, available .in this paper to justify the technicians of the Department of Mines at Ottawa and of interested smelting companies making a preliminary study of the matter. THE DEFENCE ARGUMENT As a factor in rearmament, metals play a vital part. That rearmament is to continue on an increasing scale is indicated in Premier Chamberlain's address of October 3rd last, when he said: ?'For a long period now we have been engaged in this country in a great programme of rearmament which is daily increasing in pace and volume. let no one think because we have signed 'this agreement between the four powers at Munich we can afford to relax our efforts or call a halt in our armaments at this moment'. As matters stand, the facilities in British Columbia are entirely out of line with the strategic importance of this Province as the Western Front of Canada and the Empire. All our copper ores, and an appreciable part of our lead and zinc ores, are sent for treatment to Japan, United States, and Europe, while we import our iron and alloys. A treatment plant on this Coast would not only give us control of war metals and chemicals but it would provide an increased industrial and research population, badly needed in this area and of the greatest value in the case of war. This is where the mining industry can do its bit.

The approach to the disposal and storage of mine tailings is slowly evolving. Tailings disposal has been based on minimising short-term capital and operating costs, with rehabilitation costs discounted by the application of a high discount factor in a net present value approach to accounting. This has led to the widespread adoption of surface tailings storage facilities (TSFs) to store slurried tailings delivered by robust and cheap centrifugal pumps and pipelines. Depending on the site climate, rate of rise of the tailings, nature of the tailings and the extent to which supernatant water is removed from the surface TSF, the tailings may or may not dewater, densify and gain strength. High rates of rise of dilute tailings to a facility used to store both tailings and supernatant water results in a wet, low-density, soft tailings deposit that not only occupies a large storage volume but also presents rehabilitation difficulties. A low tailings density results in high containment wall costs, very high rehabilitation costs and a low potential for future land use or ecological function. Overall, the cost of slurried tailings disposal, thought to be low, is actually high. However, low rates of rise, even of dilute tailings, in a dry climate with efficient supernatant water removal can produce a dewatered, high-density, stiff tailings deposit that may occupy a large footprint but to shallow depth that is relatively easy to rehabilitate. There are advantages in dewatering tailings in the processing plant to recover process water and chemicals, facilitate tailings disposal in a more solid form and facilitate rehabilitation. However, the cost of dewatering in-plant can be high, and the process water may not lend itself to reuse. There are also advantages in removing supernatant water to facilitate solar and wind drying of exposed tailings, although water is lost to evaporation and the dried tailings may best be harvested prior to inundation by fresh tailings or rainfall run-off. This paper discusses the background and trends towards the elimination of conventional surface slurried TSFs, with examples presented of the management of black coal and other tailings, including those that are clay mineral-rich.CITATION:Williams, D J, 2015.
