So soon is history made. The men who halted on the rolling plain where Denver now stands and gazed westward at the snow-clad ranges in eager questioning of their possibilities of golden wealth, have lived to see a noble city built where once their camp-fires burned, and have participated in the discovery of a magnificent series of productive mines amid the mountains which seemed at that time the Ultima Thule of their pilgrimage. To those who investigate the workings of our complicated mining and metallurgical industries, the story of their evolution from humble beginnings will appear an instructive romance. Companhia Paraibuna de Metais (CPM) is presently pursuing a zinc production expansion project. Besides increasing production, the goal of the project is to address existing problems while providing a platform for a proposed twofold increase in production in 2003/2004. Therefore, the current expansion strategy was formulated to address present and future requirements. Computer simulation modeling and full scale plant testing are being used to generate data to optimize the operating conditions and to perform a sensitivity analysis. The initial phase of the project, which will boost CPM's capacity to 86,000 t/y of marketable zinc, is to be completed in September 2000.

For more than 20 years, Belgium, leading all the coal-mining countries, has made increasing use of sheathed explosives, which wore first suggested by the late E. Lemaire, predecessor of the author gas Director of the Institut National des Mines. It appears to the author that it will be valuable to show how the use of sheathed explosives has developed in Belgium, how the various difficulties encountered in their manufacture have been overcome gradually, and the tyros of sheathing that have survived and the reasons for their survival.

The structure of steel, when rendered coarse by over-heating, is made fine by re-heating to a certain temperature, the determination of which has received much attention from eminent metallurgical authorities. Among these, I may particularly mention Prof. D. Tschernoff' [Chernoff], who, about thirty years ago, studied this question in connection with his investigations on the structure of steel in genera1. † Some years later, Mr. J. A. Brinell took up the inquiry, and arrived at many important conclusions, stated in his well-known rules on the treatment of steel. ‡ These two gentlemen, however, based their reasoning chiefly upon the aspect of fractures—a method which, though it affords valuable information, does not readily reveal the different steps by which a change in structure takes place. For further light on the subject, we owe much to more recent microscopic investigations, which have made us better acquainted with the internal structure of metals. Such an investigation, closely connected with the present subject, and made by Mr. John E. Stead a few years ago, was first published in 1898.6

A shield on a tunneling machine has two basic purposes. Firstly to provide temporary support in unstable ground, maintaining the integrity of the bore and protecting the operators, and secondly, in conjunction with other sealing devices, to prevent the ingress of water. In any specific tunnel, unstable ground and water may or may not occur together. Further, there are a number of different ground behaviors that may be termed unstable and these must be defined in order to determine the most suitable type of machine. Beyond the shield itself, the cutterhead and the mucking system design are critical in successfully traversing difficult geology. In any but the shortest tunnels, variations in the geological conditions and the requirement of an acceptable advance rate can impose increasing degrees of sophistication in the machine design. In this paper we will review current designs of shielded type machines and their application, and discuss new developments which blend hard and soft ground tunneling technology. We will also indicate that in some conditions, although first impressions seem to favor a shielded machine, in fact an open gripper TBM may be the wisest choice.

ITALY is by- far the poorest in mineral resources of the so-called great pou7ers of Europe. Before the World War this shortage was not so serious as the essential minerals that could not be mined domestically at a profit were bought in the world markets. In those days tourist trade and remittances from Italians abroad helped to provide Italy with foreign exchange. During the World War, when certain mineral products were scarce and when prices rose in some instances to several times normal, the Italian Government began to regulate consumption and imports. It was not until later, when the Fascist regime established the corporate state, that Italy seriously considered adopting a of self-sufficiency. Private industry was grouped under separate corporations, for the principal industries; including mining and metallurgy and the heads of the large producing companies, became members of these corporations. With traditional grade control processes, geological models are created by geologists at the completion of the data collection stage and wireframe construction is closed off at a set date to allow for time to complete the estimation process. Any issues identified at earlier stages or the addition of new data requires the estimation process to be started again. Alternative interpretations are explored only if time allows and often in a limited fashion. An alternative workflow has been developed at the Waihi Underground Gold Mine utilising Leapfrog Edge and Seequent Central. Geological and grade control models are created, dynamically linked, and saved as separate branches. A project geologist is able to work on the grade control model and a mine geologist on the geological model simultaneously. This allows for a non-linear modelling workflow with continual review and feedback. The introduction of new data can occur right up to the model due date, with data collection, validation, alternate interpretation, and review happening incrementally. Models are categorised and stored in Seequent Central according to project status. An approved version of the geological model and grade control estimate are uploaded at the time of release and transparently capture all data used at a point in time, as well as the review process. Dynamically updating models for grade control has reduced turnaround time while increasing accuracy and quality. Estimates of individual domains are vastly improved from being able to rapidly evaluate the effects of model parameter changes in real time and 3D. Development and stope design directly benefit from these streamlined processes, with higher quality, timely production occurring as a result.

"The nonferrous production industry has gone through a remarkable transformation in recent years in terms of developing and adopting new technologies. Technology innovations have largely been driven by the need for greatly improved environmental protection in addition to increased productivity. One of the most notable aspects of the new technologies is their ability to reduce the emission of sulfur and other pollutants to extremely low levels.The current industry trends towards more environmentally friendly technologies are bringing about additional benefits of developing more efficient, technically advanced, and continuous processes in closed reactor vessels. Key aspects of these modem trends include the use of increased oxygen enrichment in the process gas, better process control, reduced manpower requirements, and plant operations with more skilled personnel.Computer simulation and modeling of complex processes have become more reliable, realistic, and thus increasingly useful in metal production. Some of the notable examples are reviewed.Finally, the need and advantages for value-added production in the nonferrous industry are discussed.I. IntroductionMost recently commissioned technologies for nonferrous metals production have been developed largely in response to environmental concerns. One of the most remarkable improvements made by the nonferrous industry in the last decade has been the rapid increase in sulfur capture. Before the start of the last decade, 90% capture of sulfur was considered good. Since then, strict emission regulations have become the norm in advanced societies, although smelters in many parts of the world still operate with limited pollution control. Other emissions and discharges have also been substantially reduced, resulting in much improved working conditions and worker hygiene in addition to the overall environmental protection. The development of the more environmentally friendly technologies has accompanied other advantageous advances made in the nonferrous industry, i.e., the trend towards more gas-tight, continuous processes and larger plants. This has increased the competitive edge enjoyed by the industry in the industrial countries, offsetting the higher costs of labor and pollution abatement that they have to overcome in those countries. Experience has shown that clean technology often leads to a profitable business, because its adoption forces the concomitant advancement of related technologies in addition to the avoidance of penalties imposed by the public on pollution-prone industries. Needless to say, there are other driving forces for new technologies such as reduction of operating and capital costs, improved product quality, and energy considerations in terms of reduced consumption and utilization of readily available sources."

There is no more important problem today than industrial relationship, and probably none that is receiving more thought. But in these days of Epie and Utopia, one has to be rather careful in speaking on this subject. Consequently, for fear that my plea for taking the working man into the family might be misconstrued, by some, as a step towards communism or socialism, I would like to say at the outset that I believe that, so long as we have human individualism, human ambitions, human hopes and fears, straight socialism is as far off as the Millennium. The same applies to communism, which only differs from socialism in that the communist realizes that his ideals can only be attained by massacring millions and destroying all that we hold sacred. Each still looks to Russia for inspiration and guidance, totally disregarding the Soviet swing-back to individual contract work and differential wage scales. They seem to be oblivious of the tyranny and repression in the present Russian system, and get very restless when reminded of it. In spite of the fact that the standard of living in civilized countries has improved tremendously and is still improving, we find that, every seven or eight years, production in many lines has outstripped consumption, and we have had panics or depressions of greater or less magnitude, accompanied by extensive unemployment. It is evident to every thinking person that there must be no little inefficiency in the control of industry. For four long years, governments and industrialists have striven to find the key to solve the present problem. Many countries are getting back to a position approaching normal-Canada probably more so than most. None, however, can feel assured that they have actually cured the situation. All kinds of schemes have been developed; tariff barriers have sprung up over-night where none existed before; currencies have been inflated to gain added security in the home markets and to try to gain advantage in export trade; and each country watches the movements of the others with fear and mistrust. I am not prepared to formulate a full solution of our troubles, but I hope to be able to demonstrate the feasibility and wisdom of the type of industrial relationship I advocate, and also that it may be a large, and possibly an essential, step towards the solution of our difficulties.

Achieving continued economic growth with social equity within the natural limits of the Earth's 'eco-systems is the major issue facing the world today. The material and energy needs of the world cannot be met with the current ways of addressing this issue. The need for metals, an important class of materials, will continue into the future because their unique properties make substitution by other materials impossible in many applications and this need will continue to be met from primary metal production and recycling. However, the recycling rate will increase and the usage pattern of metals will change to reflect the environmental impact of their production and use. Pyrometallurgy has an important role in meeting the metal needs of the future since some metals can only be produced pyrometallurgically; the energy required to produce some metals pyrometallurgically is significantly less than by other methods; most metals are most efficiently recycled pyrometallurgically; and the release of harmful and toxic elements into the biosphere can sometimes best be controlled through pyrometallurgical processing. The development of strategies for pyrometallurgical processing for the future lies in the recognition that sustainable development calls for large step improvements in value delivered per unit of environmental impact over the entire supply chain. Pyrometallurgists can respond to this challenge by contributing to reducing the environmental impact of meeting metal needs using three broad strategies: "end-of-pipe" approaches to convert emissions into benign materials for storage or disposal; flowsheet redesign to limit or eliminate emission production; and improved recycling technologies. A number of examples are discussed to illustrate how the sustainability driver is already influencing the technological development of pyrometallurgical processes, and how these will develop further as the sustainability driver strengthens.

The current surge of interest in lithium (Li) is due to the anticipated demand for electric vehicles and small scale power storage. Brine deposits contain most of the global Li resource, however hard rock deposits can be more readily and rapidly developed and comprise the majority of proposed projects. These projects plan to use the conventional processing routes of dense medium separation and / or flotation to produce a spodumene concentrate for sale. The standard route for subsequent processing of spodumene concentrate is thermal decrepitation, acid leaching, solution purification and precipitation of lithium carbonate. This is typically followed by further purification. A number of projects have ores which contain other lithium minerals, principally micas, lepidolite and zinnwaldite, necessitating an alternative treatment route. Several different routes for spodumene processing are under development to reduce costs to compete with brine projects. Granites are classed as igneous rooks; they have been formed by the solidification of rook magmas or Solutions from deep within the earth. It is an almost invariable law of nature that mamas which cool quickly form fine-brained or glassy rocks, while those that cool slowly are completely crystallized and are coarser-grained. Granites, being of the latter class, are regarded as having attained their solid form at considerable depth below the surface under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The constituent minerals crystallized out slowly, the crystals interlocking with one another. The great depth of overlying rocks that must have been present when crystallization took place has been removed by erosion over large areas on the surface of the earth in consequence of which granites appear at or near the surface in many localities.

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

Summary This paper describes the general situation of the mining industry in New Brunswick, and gives a detailed description of the recent developments in the antimony deposits at Lake George and the copper deposits in the vicinity of New Horton. At the end are lists of the most interesting geological literature relating to the Province and of the geological and topographic maps that have been published. Introduction In presenting this paper to the Institute, I apologize for the small amount of scientific data which it contains. Recent investigations in the Province of New Brunswick have been carried on largely by outside interests, and at present we ourselves are in the position .of taking stock. However, I am glad of the opportunity of giving you a general idea of the situation. The Province is making an honest effort to learn the truth concerning her mineral deposits and in time hopes to collect data which should be of interest to the mining community.

Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants a good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means `belonging to a small bedroom', a `cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant `cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, `amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek. through Old French and means `something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. This paper examines how legislation and regulation can be external drivers of technical change in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy and how the industry can respond. Two examples are considered; the production of copper metal from concentrates and the cyanide process for gold production.The Clean Air Act (1970) in the USA initiated a wave of attempted innovations in the extractive metallurgy of processing copper sulfide concentrates to meet forthcoming standards on sulfur dioxide emissions. Interestingly, a satisfactory technical solution existed (flash smelting and gas capture) but had not been widely adopted.Nearly fifty years later the primary copper industry finds itself with new challenges. One major challenge is how to deal with the increasing level of arsenic in copper concentrates. Most countries impose an upper limit on arsenic in imported concentrate; typically, 0.5% As or less. Higher arsenic concentrates can be blended with cleaner ones to meet the limit, but this tactic cannot be used indefinitely as the average arsenic level of global concentrates rises inexorably. Further, smelters (often in urban locations) cannot be expected to deal with both ever-increasing arsenic in the feed and stricter restrictions on emissions and disposal. A rising “inventory” of primary copper deposits are already constrained from development by high arsenic concentrate. These deposits will need to be developed if future copper demand is to be met. An economic and technical solution to arsenic is needed. The gold industry may also face challenges in the use of cyanide, by far the dominant lixiviant used in gold and silver production. Public perception has driven restrictions on the use or transport of cyanide in some jurisdictions. History suggests that such pressure is only likely to increase. While there are several alternative lixiviants, none can yet match the utility and economics of cyanide.Such important issues will not be resolved by incremental change or new equipment items. They require development of new process technology - a tectonic event rather than an incremental change. It requires sustained effort (and expenditure) over decades and is very unlikely to result from “business as usual” for producers, suppliers or academics. Past major process developments were driven by a dire need for economic survival or by legislative change.
