"For a good many years the Bureau of Mines and various state mining experi¬ment stations have endeavored to develop some method of utilizing the immense deposits of lignite in the United States. Work in relent year has indicated that the best method of this is to drive off the moisture and most of the volatile water from the lignite in some form of carbonizing apparatus leaving a residue high in fixed carbon and low in moisture and volatile matter, which by briquetting can be made into a high-grade fuel. The earlier forms of carbonizing equipment tried were complicated, costly to build and keep in repair, and could not be operated intermittently without being seriously damaged. During the year 1922, however the Bureau of Mines devised a very simple carbonizing oven which produces a uniformly well carbonized product. This oven is essentially a vertical shaft with means for supplying raw lignite at the top and discharging the carbonized limited at the lower end. Air in regulated amount is admitted to the shaft at two horizons, and a zone of combustion maintained through which the column of lignite passes. The lignite is thus carbonized by construction of its contained matter and a small proportion of its fixed carbon, leaving most of the fixed carbon in the carbonized product or ""char"". The degree of carbonization can be closely controlled by varying the volume of air supplied to the oven and the rate of travel of the charre down the shaft.The ""lignite char"" produced is a soft material resembling charcoal more than coal or coke, but somewhat harder than charcoal. "Metallurgical process development in greenfield projects must define the comminution flowsheet and establish the equipment sizes that are required to deliver the project design criteria. These are critical steps that heavily influence the financial performance of the project, requiring a detailed understanding of the ore properties of the project resources and the best practice methods to size comminution machines. This paper reviews current practices for determining the ore characteristics relevant to comminution circuit design. Particular attention is given to the design of sampling and testing programs, and the methods commonly applied to size crushers and mills for conventional size reduction applications in mineral processing. IntroductionMetallurgical process development in greenfield projects requires the selection of a comminution flow sheet and must establish the equipment sizes required to deliver the project design criteria. For brownfield projects the same objectives may apply for plant expansions, or the project objective may be simply to define the capacity and operating cost of an existing facility for a new ore source. The discussion will focus on testwork programs to support the design of comminution circuits commonly in use in mineral processing today, specifically crusher, tumbling mill and stirred mill technologies.It is important that any testwork program is designed giving consideration to the types of flow sheets that are viable for the project, and the data that will need to be generated to support the final equipment sizing. Designing a testwork program to only provide information about one particular type of flow sheet will not allow sufficient information to be generated for a rigorous trade-off analysis of options, and may therefore preclude financial optimization of the project. Testing programs should be designed to collect sufficient data to ensure that any backtracking at a later stage to fill in missing information is minimal."

The southeastern shores of Great Slave lake present a curious anomaly in geographical and geological exploration, in that an area so large and important, and withal so comparatively accessible, should nevertheless have remained unexplored, unmapped, and indeed almost unknown, until quite recent" times On their return from the famous journey to the mouth of the Coppermine, the band of Indians with whom he travelled led Samuel Hearne across Slave lake. He was the first white man to see that great body of water and it is rather curious that it should have been seen first from the north rather than from the south. Hearne's account of the lake is vague, and he made no attempt ?to map the part through which he travelled. About 30 years later John Franklin, on his first journey to the Arctic, crossed the lake from the mouth of the Slave river to the Yellow Knife river. Franklin's maps show all of his route in accurate detail, except that part of it which lay through Slave lake. In 1833-34, Captain, afterwards Sir George, Back made the first exploration of the eastern end of the lake. Captain Back was then on his way to the Arctic coast by way of the Great Fish river, and his Indian guides led him through Great Slave lake by the route they had followed from time immemorial. This route, partly because of its directness, and partly because of its sheltered character, lay through the great mass of islands in the middle of the lake to the Talthei narrows, and thence along the sheltered north shore with its many coves and harbours. The Illinois State Geological Survey's program in industrial minerals is twofold-the gathering of information on mineral raw materials and the generation of data on the use of these materials. The first function is carried out by the Industrial Minerals Section and the Clay Resources and Clay Mineral Technology Section of the Geological Group, and the second is the responsibility of the Chemical Engineering Section of the Chemical Group. Gathering in formation on raw materials includes both mapping of resources and fundamental geological research. Recent and current research projects include studies relating lithologies of limestones to their physical properties, investigation of sulfur dioxide reactivity of various types of limestone, lithostratigraphic studies of limestones of Mississippian age, investigations of heavy minerals in Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Pleistocene sands, studies of the environments of clay deposition, electron microscope studies of clays and limestones, and investigation of long-term expansion in ceramic products. A relatively recent development that relates more to dissemination of information than to research is environmental geology. This affects the Survey's industrial minerals program chiefly by stimulating the study of rock and mineral resources in metropolitan areas and reporting the results for the land- use planner as well as the engineer or mineral producer. The Survey's program of research on the use of industrial minerals was expanded and diversified in 1966. Incorporating a minerals beneficiation lab, the program is designed to develop new uses for existing mineral resources and to assist producers in implementing these ideas: Projects of the minerals engineering program have included the separation of a feldspar concentrate from certain glacial outwash and river sands, recovery of kaolinite from the waste from silica sand operations, development of the use of an Illinois clay as a binder for pellets, and investigations into the use of fly ash and fluorspar mine tailings.

Springvale Mine is an underground coal mine in the western coalfield of New South Wales which utilises retreat longwall mining technique. The mine encountered significant gateroad floor heave issues during retreat of LW415. Floor heave has subsequently impeded longwall advance as well as longwall bolt up and recovery to some extent during the extraction of the next five longwalls. Floor heave at Springvale Mine develops throughout the lifecycle of the mine roadways, and is most prevalent in longwall gateroads. Floor heave has been measured as early as 2 weeks after roadway development and continues to develop through the post-development phase, with a rapid increase in close proximity to the longwall face. This paper presents a case study of the evolution of understanding of floor heave behaviour at Springvale Mine based on geotechnical characterisation, an intensive convergence monitoring program (roof and floor movement) and spatial correlation of monitored locations with longwall face position. The analysis considers previously known factors contributing to floor heave including mining depth, geological and physical properties of the rock mass and mine design geometry. Investigation results indicate a strong correlation between floor heave magnitude and roof dilation magnitude, geophysically inferred faulting in underlying strata, areas of localised stress concentration and mine roadway dimensions. This paper also discusses the predictive model which was developed as a result of the study, which is now the basis of the floor heave removal program used to manage roadway convergence at the mine. This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

Ventilation of underground workings consists in establishment of such control of air currents that the underground workers may work in safety, with maximum comfort and efficiency, and without impairment of health; and requires that the mine openings may be made subject to such control of air flow as to remove from these workings at ordinary times harmful gases and dusts, and that, at time of emergency, such as fire or explosion, there may be maintained as much or as little air flow as may be desired covering portions of the mine or the mine in its entirety. Control of air flow is the keystone of any ventilating structure, and this very essential feature is obtainable only by the installation of mechanically-operated fans, together with other;. ventilating devices such as doors, over-casts, regulators, etc. Every mine, large or small, coal or metal, should from the outset be equipped with a fan. While much has been written about natural ventilation and many claims made that in specific mines there is sufficient natural air flow, there are few if any mines, coal or metal, where natural ventilation supplies anything like adequately safe or healthful conditions for underground workers even at ordinary times; and at a time of mine fire or explosion, mines depending upon natural ventilation are practically helpless, and certainly are decidedly dangerous to those unfortunates forced to be in them. While ventilation has practically always been deemed an integral part of coal mining, metal mines have rarely paid much, if any, attention to air circulation until forced to do so by occurrence of some untoward condition or accident. Yet metal mines actually have as great need of efficient circulation of air as have coal mines. The coal mine must remove the dangerous explosive gas, methane, also fumes from explosives and, in occasional places, other gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen.

More than 700,000 feet of diamond drilling was completed in the Blind River area between 1953 and 1958. Much of this drilling was at depths which are still not usual in North America. However, as the tendency is to deeper holes, factual data from the Blind River operation may well provide information of value in future programs. Rates of drilling decreased with in-creasing depth, but uncommonly good rates (an average of over 50 feet per day over more than 4,000 feet of hole) were achieved with proper engineering and care. Costs varied as contractors and geologists became familiar with the area Hole deviation in the Blind River area was locally severe and control of the hole trace became a major problem. Careful surveying was necessary and found to be highly re-liable. It was found that control of the hole trace above 1,500 feet was much more difficult than at depths below 1,500 feet. The smelting process of the old reverberatory furnace including its capacity has been improved over the years in different ways eg. with oxy-fuel burners, parallel reactors with the reverb or with various modifications of the reverb furnace itself. The future reverb modifications with old concepts are difficult or impossible as the increased copper losses in slag call for separate slag treatment and particularly the process modifications do not solve the environmental issues but instead mean unavoidable high capital and operating costs in gas cleaning and sulphur recovery. During the last decades improvement in process performance and increase in capacity of copper flash smelters has been achieved easily by substituting the pre-heated process air by highly oxygen enriched air. The flash furnaces of today, however, are inherently designed to operate with high oxygen enrichment. Further process improvement with a view to production costs and capacity increase as well as to the more stringent environmental requirements is possible with even higher oxygen enrichment. This, apart from the advantages it generates, requires improvements in and careful design of the feed system, concentrate burner, furnace cooling and the off-gas line as well as adaption of the flash converting instead of the conventional Peirce-Smith converters. A logical answer even for the revamping of the reverb smelters in the future is the total replacement of the reverb furnaces with flash smelting together with flash converting. This paper discusses the possibilities for future process improvements of the existing flash smelters taking into account the process concepts, equipment modifications and capital aspects not forgetting the environmental issues. The revamping of the PASAR smelter in Philippines is introduced as an example of a recent success story.

Semi-arid regions suffer from two afflictions; evaporation may exceed precipitation by multiples of two or more and variations in precipitation can be both extreme and difficult to predict. Many Australian mines are situated in semi-arid areas where communities are reliant upon locally sourced water or special purpose infrastructure is built as part of the mine construction. As the question of climate change looms, issues related to future water supply and sustainable water management become increasingly important. Across Australia several mining operations co-exist in a single surface water and/or groundwater catchment area. The management of water on a mine by mine or a community by community basis is illogical and must be reconsidered based on a single water catchment and a whole-of-community basis. Mine water should be considered on a full life cycle basis where the quality is assessed for specific mine site applications. This paper addresses technical challenges that include surface water and groundwater supply in semi-arid regions, operational water in the mining industry, beneficial uses of water, water economics and demand management. In much the same way as emissions trading evolved into a multi-stakeholder forum, mining regions offer scope for innovative thinking in water supply and reuse. In addition, this paper considers a number of initiatives taken by Australian mining companies that are entering a prefeasibility stage and contrasts these initiatives against the established success within a South African mining region. The challenges and potential solutions to this initiative are presented for future consideration.

Mining is most vital to our civilization. The current model of extraction technologies was designed without an expiration date and therefore generates environmental effects that are severe. Mining results-effects have been traditionally accepted and promoted around the world since Agricola described mining. Mining’s extractive technology is outmoded and standardized and inflicts negative results-effects on nature. Those results are liabilities dimensioned in legacy and type of nature able to provide to the next generation. In order to design, build, and transform mining effectively we must ask: What is the vision of mining? Mining has exhausted its antiquated mindset of over 200 years. Now it merely pilots us into crisis. The challenge today is to resolve the socio-environmental conflicts globally with a radical transformation of the mining business at its core. This paper illustrates that old mindsets must be radically updated or the concept of mining will continue to be trapped. Changing the mindset will enable discourse toward a new destiny. These changes will change mining for the better. We are able to evolve and get different results than in the past by pursuing a new legacy to live in harmony with nature for many more years. INTRODUCTION Minerals are supported by the law of conservation of mass. They have the unique characteristics of being finite, exhaustible, unsustainable, and have an unlimited recycling. Minerals are also hard to find because we have explored and virtually exhausted the whole crust of this planet. Orebodies that used to be considered world class are almost exhausted. In the short-term, it would be almost impossible to find new world class orebodies unless they could be extracted from the ocean, the moon or other planets like Mars. Mining is designed to extract minerals for profit and to keep civilizations functioning. Subsequently, mining has a social issue that is an economic issue. Thus, mining must be seen as a real and urgent subject matter that must be protected in thought and in fact. The actual mining extractive technologies produce disequilibrium in nature that has unknowable effects in the course of time. History is filled with the negative consequences to nature due to the model of mining. The evidence of these effects from mining’s model is apparent in repetitive liabilities around the world. The effects negatively impact nature without any consideration to how these impacts will manifest themselves in the future. This model of mining is widespread and extolled in every corner of the planet because it is old and familiar and although wasteful and outdated, we do not want to expend financial resources from profit or elsewhere to explore newer ideas, methods, or technologies that would help us keep a sustainable harmony between extraction and nature. We need a new vision for mining today and to explore in what way academia can and must play a social role in the teaching of mining methods. We need to question why we continue to support the old model of mining and to ask ourselves what prevents us from updating and modernizing the method of mining to meet the current needs not just of civilization but the urgent needs to undo some of the damage to the earth. This paper hopes to develop a method to change our minds about how we conduct the business of mining in order to control the destiny of it.

Adaptive processing is often related to the mineral composition of the mining block currently processed. The portions of waste, ore and secondary product minerals considered are always positive and typically sum to 100% (i.e. a composition). A typical solution to predict block averages of spatially dependent quantities would be block kriging. However, kriging is based on spatial correlations and it has been repeatedly shown that correlations of compositional data are spurious and blurred by the constant sum constraint. Aitchison (1982) proposed a general solution for compositional problems, based on transforming the compositional data to a set of logarithms of ratios of components, and analysing the transformed scores. The transform is chosen to be invertible to ensure that no information is lost in the process. This methodology avoids spurious correlation problems and ensures coherence between results obtained with different subcompositions. Pawlowsky-Glahn and Olea (2004) adapted the approach for point-support geostatistics, allowing the prediction of point compositions from spatially neighbouring data, without the artefacts induced by standard multivariate cokriging. Unfortunately upscaling the results of this approach with block cokriging is not straightforward, because of the nonlinearity of logratio transforms. Furthermore, we have to consider those nonlinearities created by the dependence on the block composition of extraction efficiency and processing costs of the possible processing choices. This paper proposes a solution for predicting the conditional expectations of the benefit of processing the block with each processing choice using geostatistical simulations of the local values of the composition and the resulting block integrals. The computation for a large number of blocks can be done efficiently using Cholesky decomposition. The approach also allows the calculation of prediction errors for expected compositions and expected benefit at almost no additional computational cost. Such compositional approach is necessary, for example when processing choices depend on proportions of certain minerals after other components have been removed; or if processing alters the composition in a multiplicative way, by partially removing a portion of some components.

A hydrometallurgical procedure for the recovery of metal from ore, particularly of copper from sulphide materials is described. In the course of this procedure, the raw material is first of all submitted to the action of an appropriate reducing system and then treated with a ferric salt solution which brings about the selective solubilisation of the elements to be recovered with respect to those constituting the pyritic phase. This procedure is investigated using two ore samples proceeding from massive sulphide deposits, presenting different chemical and mine- ralogical characteristics. The results of this investigation are compared with those obtained by a classical process employing a ferric salt solution. It appears that one solubilisation of copper takes place under particularly advantageous conditions when our procedure is used. The principal parameters affecting leaching of zinc, lead and copper are examined. The selectivity of this treatment is evaluated by following the change during the treatment in the pyritic phase.

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

Designs, installation procedures, and performance characteristics of martensitic cast steel concaves are reviewed. Longer wear life, fewer pieces to install, and eliminating the need to scarf joints are the principal benefits of using martensitic steel to replace austenitic 12% Mn (Hadfield's) steel, the traditional concave material for large gyratory crushers. Installation procedures that reduce the risk of breakage are described. Operating practices that affect concave performance are also discussed.

Low-cost housing, like automobiles, should be appraised in the light not merely of first cost but of upkeep as well. Even more important than the number of miles the family car will go on a gallon of gasoline is the number of days the family home can be kept comfortable on a ton of fuel. A furnace tender who tossed every third shovelful of coal into the ashcan would lose his job promptly, but the effect is the same when homes continue year after year to pour out precious heat through uninsulated roofs and walls, Greater economy in household heating means even more to the national economy than to the individual, especially now that we are preparing for defense. Our fuel resources, although large, should be conserved. If less fuel is used for civilian needs, augmented requirements for defense can be met without unduly increasing the number of men needed at the coal mines and oil ells or adding new producing units that might complicate ultimate readjustment to peacetime conditions when the emergency is past and over-expansion of many industries brings new problems if unnecessary demands for transportation facilities are reduced, public carriers will be able to haul more munitions, and manpower needed for national defense will be released; and by protecting workers from health hazards in their homes additional man-hours of productive effort will be gained. Moreover, reducing the running expenses of houses by proper heat insulation helps home owners to maintain payments on property, and by minimizing foreclosures helps to stabilize the financial structure of the country. In short, here is a situation where the interests of the individual and the Nation are identical and the greatest good for the greatest number is obtained without sacrifice to anyone.

"Goldcorp is evaluating the potential for economic reprocessing of historic tailings at several sites, including the Aunor A facility located in Timmins. The overall project is investigating the ability to recover value, remove sulphide minerals and alternative tailings re-deposition strategies. Desulphurization of tailings will eliminate potential acid generation while improved tailings re-deposition could reduce long-term liabilities and closure costs. Through a task-share project between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp, tailings obtained from Aunor A site have been characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The selected tailing samples contain about 2 g/t of gold. Mineralogical analysis has identified coarse agglomerates bound with gypsum and significant free gold, confirmed by high recoveries in cyanide leach tests. However, despite no evidence of surface passivation on the minerals, conventional flotation techniques were found to be ineffective in concentrating gold or sulphides due to the high fines content and highly agglomerated particles.INTRODUCTION Aunor Mine is one of the historic mines that belongs to Porcupine Gold Mines (PGM) in Timmins, Ontario. PGM has undertaken an extensive mine closure program to remediate the legacy and closed mines with the funding supported by operating mines since 2006. Over the course of 100 years of operation in the Porcupine camp, it is estimated (Stevens et al., 2013) that about 130 million tonnes of tailings have been generated. Aunor Mine produced 2.5 million troy ounces of gold between 1940 and 1984, while processing over 7.6 million tons of ore. The original gold grade of Aunor Mine ores was about 10 g/t. With 95% gold recovery at the time, an estimate of 0.5 g/t of gold remains in the Aunor Mine tailings. Aunor Mine has two tailings impoundment areas: designated as Aunor A and Aunor B. The two sites are similar in size, about 7 hectares each. The amount of tailings in the Aunor A site alone is about 3.2 million tonnes. In 2017, bulk tailings were sampled from five designated locations in Aunor A. They were characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The bulk tailings samples contained about 10% total sulphur, 10% iron, 2% arsenic and 2 g/t of gold. The prime objective of this collaborative work between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp is to facilitate the timely development and deployment of innovative tailings reprocessing solutions, specifically in the areas of desulphurization, and recovery of metals. This work targeted specific tailings of interest to Goldcorp which goals are to improve its environmental footprint and to reduce long-term liability. Thus, it is imperative to look for innovative reprocessing options that can overcome not only technological challenges but also achieve economic benefits to offset the costs associated with reprocessing the tailings. Moreover, the greater goal is to demonstrate and deploy tailings reprocessing solutions to solve one of the industry’s most difficult challenges for a sustainable mining industry in Canada."

The inadequacy of traditional geostatistical methods for estimating some precious metals deposits has become apparent in the last few years. New methods or estimation such as Indicator, Probability and Multigaussian Kriging are difficult to understand and apply. Case studies using a new method of variogram calculation proposed by Srivastava show the method valuable for variogram estimation in precious metal deposits. Some simple, sometimes unorthodox. estimation methods that have proved useful in Some situations are presented.

Hydrometallurgical technology for the pretreatment of refractory gold concentrates has been developed at Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. It employs a patented nitrous-sulfuric acid pressure leaching process which' was proven industrially at the Sunshine refinery. Additionally, pretreatment for removal of antimony and some other impurities is done with alkaline sulfide leaching. This paper will discuss the successful application of these two technologies for pretreatment of a refractory gold concentrate prior to CIL gold recovery. A complex gold concentrate composed of pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite was tested. Results of antimony leaching in alkaline sulfide media will be discussed including some details of a novel and selective recovery method for gold leached by polysulfide or thiosulfate" Also, the factors important in and the results of the application of nitrogen species catalyzed pressure leaching to refractory gold concentrates will be detailed.

The lead and copper smelting processes employed by Mount Isa Mines Limited, Mount Isa, Australia, are used to illustrate an operating viewpoint of some problems and solutions encountered in existing commercial sulphide smelters. The smelting processes discussed; include updraught sintering, blast furnace and reverberatory smelting, and converting. Selected examples are given of methods implemented, and options available, to improve the productivity and efficiency of conventional smelting processes.
