FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

"AbstractThe Bonnie Glen oil field, one of Canada's largest, lies about fifty miles southwest of Edmonton, Alberta. One hundred and thirty-eight wells have been completed in this field since its discovery in January, 1952. Five different procedures have been used in completing the producing wells.The reservoir is an Upper Devonian biohermal reef with good porosity and uniformly high permeability. The top of the reef is quite flat but the flanks slope at angles approaching 20 degrees from the horizontal. The reservoir has a gas cap with a maximum thickness of 400 feet, an oil column of 300 feet, and a :porcus aquifer of over 300 feet. The reservoir pressure is now 2,400 pounds per square inch gauge at datum ( -4100 M.S.L.).Because of the high permeability and the high •pressure, lost circulation and resultant blowouts are a particular hazard in drilling at Bonnie :Glen field. To reduce the dangers of blowouts, it is general practice to run casing to the top of the reef. If the reef is encountered 'high' it was usual practice to run a liner and perforate for completion. Wells penetrating the •reef below the gas/oil interface were either completed in open hole or through casing perforated opposite the oil pay, with the former method more frequently used. Eight wells were completed by the Humble-Otis permanent-type completion, and recently five high wells were completed open hole with the gas •cap exposed. This latter completion, 'tubing submergence', has proved highly satisfactory thus far.The open-hole type of completion is cheaper than the liner perforation method and results in better well performance. More experimentation and data are needed before the tubing submergence method can be recommended unqualifiedly. but all evidence thus far favours its use in reef reservoirs."

"This paper describes a case study of a retaining wall structure using a diaphragm wall to construct a stilling basin at Tanjung Bin T4 power plant in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The stilling basin is part of the Phase IV (T4) 1x1000MW power plant’s offshore cooling water discharge culverts. The site is located close to the sea with 5m of fill on top of very soft sediments of marine origin up to 20m thick underlain by fluvial clay and metasedimentary rock. Stringent wall deflection criteria and construction program dictated adopting an efficient solution with 800mm thick diaphragm wall supported by permanent top support as the temporary prop and improved horizontal restraint provided by deep mix piles acting as a slab (ground improvement layer) below the final excavation level. The depth of excavation is about 10.12m from the existing ground level. The proposed solution kept the wall deflection below the limit of 0.7% of the depth of bulk excavation and avoided additional props leading to faster completion of the structure. With unsymmetrical loading behind the retaining walls, 2D finite element analysis was carried out to assess the wall deflection and stresses in the wall and the grout layer below. The diaphragm wall is instrumented to monitor the behavior and the findings are discussed in the paper.INTRODUCTIONConstruction in soft marine clay has always been a challenge to the engineer because of its very low shear strength and its sensitivity to disturbance. In the case of excavation projects the problem becomes even more complicated with development of excess pore pressure during excavation. Marine clay with its low shear strength and lesser passive resistance, generally leads to large wall movements and settlement behind the wall. Increased passive resistance coming from increased number of props is useful but has its limits and it is no longer the most effective way in containing or reducing the wall movements or forces in the wall. One of the solutions to these problems is to improve the soil shear strength by means of ground improvement infront of the wall at an elevation most appropriate to maximize wall performance. There are several methods adopted in improving a soil layer including mixing additives to the ground to improve the shear strength to partially replacing the weak soil while others are fully replacing the weak soil. This paper discusses the case study of approximately 10m of excavation in soft marine clay using 800mm thick diaphragm wall supported by Deep Mix Piles (DMP) being used to improve soft marine deposit to form a slab just below the formation level and thus improving passive resistance significantly. The ground improvement layer helped to reduce the wall forces and deflections making it possible to remove the need for additional temporary props leading to significant savings is time and productivity. The paper presents the various options explored before this method is adopted, the design approach, instrumentation data and the monitored results."

INTRODUCTION THE PURPOSE of this article on methane is to present the simple basic facts of the characteristics, detection, occurrence, and control of this natural gas in metal mines, so that operators and .safety men may deal with it with some degree of confidence. Fortunately, although methane has been noted at many metal mines throughout Canada, the occurrences usually are small flows of short duration, and the ignitions experienced have, in most cases, had minor consequences. However, methane does present a hazard that can be of serious proportions, and ?any complacent attitude toward this gas that might exist in the minds .of people engaged in underground mining operations should be dispelled when it is ,pointed out that, in Ontario alone, ignitions of this gas have resulted in at least four fatalities, and eight men seriously injured and burned, during the past three years. lt is well-known that liberation of methane can and does .occur suddenly, often in mines where no gas has been found before, and that many ignitions and explosions have occurred in so called non-gassy mines. In view of this, it is apparent that no mine can, with any degree of certainty, be classified as non-gassy. CHARACTERISTICS OF METHANIZ The characteristics of natural gas encountered in most of the Ontario mines indicate that methane is the chief constituent. Methane (CH4), commonly termed 'marsh gas', and by the coal miner 'firedamp', is a colourless, odourless, and non-poisonous gas considerably lighter than air, and is the explosive gas frequently found in coal mines. Its physiological effects, closely resemble those resulting from nitrogen.

"Mercury (Hg) is toxic and has long-term effect on the muscle tissues, the brain and the central nervous system functions due to its bioaccumulation and biotransformation effect. Hg pollution around the world is high and this has attracted much global concern such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury, held in 2013. For several years, mercury has been the chemical of choice for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) gold extraction, accounting for about one-third of the global mercury consumption. A greater percentage of this ends up in the environment through open burning of amalgam, spillage and indiscriminate disposal of waste. To break this wall of mercury pollution, it is very important for the mercury used to be recycled through the use of mercury retort units. This brings into the limelight, the Lantern Retort which tries to synergise the high conductivity of steel and the see-through effect of glass, thus, improving the amalgamation process. A research conducted on improving the original Lantern Retort arrived at an appropriate distillation length of 5.08 cm which was used in redesigning a more efficient retort. The improved Lantern Retort recovered about 98% of the mercury used. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and Small-scale mining (ASM) is an informal mining activities which employ quite simple tools such as pickaxes, sluice boxes, shovels, chisels, metal bars, mattocks and water pumps for mining and processing of gold ores. The artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has served as source of employment for many people in developing countries including Ghana (Aryee, 2001; Hilson and Potter, 2003; Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah et al., 2010) and has provided a substantial amount of foreign exchange through its activities (Hilson, 2001; Styles et al., 2010). Hentschel et al. in 2003 estimated that about thirteen (13) million people are said to be engaged directly in the small-scale mining activities worldwide. However, an estimated 100 million people are said to depend on this sector for their livelihood mainly in developing countries. In China alone, a projected number between 3 and 15 million people are engaged in artisanal and small-scale mining activities (Hentschel et al., 2003), whilst in Ghana, it is estimated that more than 1,000,000 people are employed directly or indirectly in the artisanal and small-scale mining activities, with 10% being women (Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014). In Ghana, ASM gold production has grown from a low of 2.2% in 1989 to a high of 34% in 2014. This figure is estimated to increase with proper documentation. This indicates that the sector has made significant socioeconomic impact on many individuals and communities as a whole. Notwithstanding the above positive contributions, the sector has also contributed to negative impacts on human, aquatic life and the environment in general due to indiscriminate mercury emission. This ‘pollution wall’ needs to be broken, and several interventions have been put in place including the use of retort units like the lantern retort (Adjei et al., 2014; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014)."

Results of the study of chloride ion concentration effect to osmium-187 sorption from wastewater of copper smelter with use of foreign anionites of different basicity and structure are presented in the work. It was found that the increase of chloride ion concentration in the wastewater helps to increase recovery of osmium using anionites regardless of their nature. The ways to intensify the process are proposed. The method for osmium elution from the anionites with potassium iodate solution was developed. It was shown that the method lets to recover up to 99% of osmium from the anionites. Recommendations for selection of eluents for better recovery of osmium from the anionites were elaborated. Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

In order to gain competitiveness and compete at a global level, construction companies should improve their efficiency. The problem is even more relevant in the construction field, whose work processes find it hard to evolve towards new automated methods and techniques in the management field. For that reason, this paper suggests how construction companies could apply new technologies to implement automated management of environmental hazards. Based on a survey regarding the environmental risks presently experienced in construction sites, noise and dust were considered two of the main hazards. So in this paper a networked system for real time remote monitoring of the spatial distribution of dust in construction sites was developed. Such a system would relieve builders from the commitment of on-site surveys, allowing for a continuous monitoring of the site conditions and of the real exposure of each worker and pass-by to the pollutants generated by construction works. The main system requirements considered are: easy to deploy, reliable, as accurate as needed to be able to send real-time warnings and store a good estimation of the real exposure to which involved people have been subject to. So far the research produced a prototypical hardware for dust monitoring made up of wireless sensors which can be easily deployed on site. The sensors were calibrated by means of laboratory tests, where their measurements were compared with those collected by means of highly accurate instruments, which were taken as a reference. Thanks to these experiments, calibration curves for the sensors were worked out, showing also the measurement range of the sensors.

As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. A novel electrochemical cell has been developed for the recovery of MnO2 from residue of pyrolusite ore leading loaded with Fe, Al Ni, Co and Si impurities, This new process can be considered as an alternative to the traditional methods : S02, H2O2 or bioleaching. It has been observed to proceed fairly rapidly and could prove to be a more economically viable process, as well as being more environmentally acceptable. Electrochemical characterization and kinetic studies have shown that MnO2 is effectively leached by electrogenerated ferrous ions at high current density from a pulp containing less than 5 g8 Fe. The chemical reactions are : Cathode (inox) : 2F23+ + 2e ? 2 Fe2+ Bulk: MnO2 + 2 fe2+ 4H+ ? Mn2+ + 2 Fe3+ + 2 H2O Anode (Pb-Ag) : H2O ? ½ O2 + 2H+ + 2e Global: MnO2 +2H+ Fe2+ = Mn2+ + H2O + 1/2 O2 The catholyte (MnO2 pulp) circulates upward in the expanded mesh cathode separated from the sulfuric acid solution anolyte by a separator which shows high mechanical resistance, low porosity, low potential drop, and reasonable cost. Laboratory and mini-pilot tests have led to the construction of an OT crating pilot plant (100 kg/hr) able to leach more than 95% of Mn, Ni, Co at 1000-1200 A/m2, 50°C with high faradic yield (> 95 %) and low power consumption (3.2 kWh/kg kWh/kg &4D). New applications like the treatment of spent Zn-Mn batteries, polluted soils, spent catalysts and oxide ore (cobalt, nickel) with electrogenerated redox species are now investigated at a laboratory and mini-pilot scale.

"By the year 2000, the steel industry, not only in the United States but in the rest of the world, will undergo significant changes. On the other hand, there will be a number of areas in which change will be minimal.The current capacity of the industry worldwide is approximately 800-810 million metric tons. This may grow to some extent, as Third World countries install capacity. However, much of it will be neutralized as the industrialized countries shrink their current capacities.There will be several breakthroughs in terms of technology, some of which deal with the production of iron outside of the blast furnace. However, these processes will not be far enough advanced by that time to replace the blast furnace, rather they will supplement it.In terms of steelmaking and the subsequent rolling process, there should be a number of basic improvements. The strip mills will roll sheets with a very slight variance in gauge, which will give the customers a better product for automatic stamping machines. Ordinary carbon steel, in a number of instances, will be replaced by high-strength, low-alloy steel, which will reduce the tonnage necessary for present-day applications, such as construction.The corporate organization will be significantly changed as joint ventures and mergers will reduce the number of companies, as well as facilities in operation. This will enable the industry to reduce its capital investment and improve operating costs, so that it will be able more effectively to compete with other materials, such as plastics, cement, aluminum, etc."

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

PRICE changes in competing fuels in the last three decades have reflected the changes in the consuming habits of the people of the United States. Prior to World War 11 the importance of fuel oil and fuel gas increased almost constantly while the relative importance of both bituminous and anthracite coal decreased. During this same prewar period coal prices increased to a much greater extent than oil prices. In fact, in many years, oil prices declined and in most cases are now no higher than they were back in 1925-26. During the war natural economic trends were entirely upset because of the tremendous petroleum requirements of the Army and Navy. Under these conditions many industrial plants were converted to the use of coal and the new installations in home heating and industrial plants of all kinds which might have used oil were practically eliminated. COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The com¬mercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depending upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

IN planning a postwar program for manufactured products, it is essential that the bases for the plans be wisely chosen. First we must make certain assumptions as to the war&apos;s ending. Let us assume: (1) complete victory by the United Nations, (2) peace terms that will ensure the direction of the economy of all nations of the world toward peaceful pursuits, and (3) an early ending of the war, that is, before the nations of the world, excluding the enemy, are near the point of physical and spiritual exhaustion. Thus, our manufacturing plants and transportation facilities will still be in good shape. The plants and transportation facilities, as well as the cities of a large part of Europe, however, will be badly crippled. The rich mineral and other raw material resources of the world, little of which was under control. of the Axis powers before the war or will be after the war, will not be used up. Control of these raw materials, or at least an important part of them, will remain in the hands of the strong peaceful nations.

IN OFFERING a few comments and suggestions on trends in mining practice, and the methods and tools of tomorrow&apos;s mining, perhaps it will be appropriate to start with the subject of education. Charles Kettering, one of the best-known scientists and experimentalists in the automotive industry once said, in effect, that tech- 111ca1 schools have to be carefid not to teach a lot of hard and fast rules that may have been true once, but aren&apos;t so any more, or won&apos;t be presently. Possibly the mining school of the future will concern itself less with what has happened and more with what is going to happen. It will be built about or around problems. Such a school will be judged, not by the number of its students but by the quality of its improvements. To such a school the industry will send for men to solve particular problems. The industry will doubtless at some time sup- port such a school financially though a lot of hard work will be required to organize miners to undertake such financing, primarily because the mining industry, other than that concerned with iron and steel, is too loosely knit. Each company tends to its own knitting too closely for its own good. Wouldn&apos;t it be splendid if the mining industry would finance a "problem school" as suggested by Mr. Kettering and others.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a committee consisting of H. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr. J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is extremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. of fixed combustible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate; but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charged coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible will leave the furnace only partly burned, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven off per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 20 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

THE benefits derived from stabilization of industry that might possibly be attained through some scheme of centralized economic planning have been much discussed of recent months, and opinions on the subject range from those who believe that some agency like the War Industries Board would be practicable to create and wholly beneficial in effects, to those who are equally convinced that none of the suggestions so far advanced are at all practicable, or likely to be productive of more of good than of evil. The discussion has been on the general topic, but-many of those who have written or spoken on it have introduced economic problems of the pinera1 industry; for example, Newton D. Baker, who referred to the coal industry in his address on economic planning at the Williamstown Institute of Politics on July 31, and then went on to say, "Industrial progress is made by the development of new things, but new things upset the equilibrium of any plan. Who could have planned the industrial effects of the development of the railroads, or the economic changes which you have seen attend the development of the internal combustion engine. Obviously, unless we are prepared to put world economics in a strait-jacket and, like the encyclopedists, write its full history on the theory that further progress is impossible, no such plan could be made for nations which are forging ahead as is entirely rational for nations which are still catching up."

THE official title of our topic for today is "Resources of Metals and Other Strategic Minerals," but in accepting the invitation to open this discussion I claimed the privilege of being allowed to talk about problems other than resources for the two reasons that a great deal has already been said about resources and because we can never discuss them with the degree of certainty that an engineer likes. Resources are uncertain for many, reasons. One is that we do not know what is in the earth. It is four thousand miles to its center and although oil wells 1 ½ miles deep are becoming common and engineers are now talking of drilling holes 2 miles deep, even when they do they will have advanced only one two-thousandth part of the total distance. Only a relatively few mines are over a mile deep as yet. We know certainly that it is comparatively expensive to work at such great depth, but it would be a very foolish man who would assert it will be&apos; impossible, one or two hundred years from now, for engineers to obtain from great depths mineral supplies that are now being obtained at or near the surface. As long as- I can remember I have been hearing that our petroleum resources were in imminent danger of speedy exhaustion, and yet the yearly output is now of the same order of magnitude as the total resources were once estimated, with &apos; the cry of over-production the loudest it has ever been. Tapping progressively deeper and deeper sources of supply, has produced this result. Even in the thin layer that we are now working much-exploration still remains to be done. .
