TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

DIRECT subsidies for mine production in this country began as an outgrowth of wartime 'price regulation. The price-fixing authorities realized that the volume of production to be required from domestic copper, lead, and zinc mines would invoke costs of production considerably higher than the established ceiling prices. Accordingly, beginning Feb. 1, 1942 the Premium Price Plan was set up, which undertook to pay premiums to mines for production in excess of quota, of 5¢ per lb of copper and 2Y4¢ per lb of zinc or lead. Quotas, except for small mines, were initially established at the average rate of production in 1941, but were later reduced arbitrarily on an individual basis. Subsequently, additional "B" premiums were set for lead and zinc of 2Y40 per lb and a further "C" zinc premium of 2%¢. Additional copper premiums were negotiated on an individual basis, mainly with small mines. Quotas under each of these successive categories were the production obtained at the next lower premium level. In other words, under ceiling prices of 12¢ for copper, 6,14¢ for lead, and 83¢ for zinc, it was possible for high-cost operations to receive prices plus premiums of 17¢ or more for copper, 12¢ for lead, and 16% 0 for zinc on a portion of their production. On the other hand, some of the larger operators received only slight premiums and in at least one instance none at all. The average price plus premium for copper was 12.25¢ in 1942 and rose to 13.65¢ in 1945. That for lead was 6.99¢ in 1942 and 8.73¢ in 1945, and for zinc it was 9.06¢ in 1942 and 11.200 in 1945.

It is with a certain amount of trepidation that a man considers gathering his family of six, traveling across a continent, two oceans and a sea, and going to live in a foreign land. But "pioneering" is still possible, and a nation is "foreign" only until one has lived in it. We've had eight years of pleasant experiences in South Africa on which to base that contention. It was in January 1938 that my brother first extolled the virtues of South Africa to us, and just three months and a thousand small problems later my wife, two daughters, three sons and I were boarding a ship in New York, bound for Cape- town. We arrived in May, and within a week had found a furnished home with beautiful lawns, tennis, court, a garden, and everything needed for family comfort. The children were soon located in school, and I settled down to the task of entering the importing business, as had been my original intention. The importing business started out slowly but was coming along nicely when on Sept. 3, 1939 the war started in Europe and a declaration of war by the Union of South Africa was made on the following day. With the declaration came import and export controls. In fact we were controlled completely out of business in one stroke. Liquidating the business, I went to Johannesburg intending to find work in one of the mines. Government health and safety regulations require that all underground mine employees have a red ticket from the Miners Phthisis Bureau certifying that they are not susceptible to silicosis, the scourge of the Witwatersrand gold mining industry. I made application to the Bureau, completed a form covering my whole past life, and was given a complete physical examination. The following day I was startled to find that I had not only been refused a red ticket but had been classified with a green ticket which for- ever bars one from working underground in any scheduled mine in the country, and all this in spite

THE year 1929 has shown a surprising growth in the attention given by mining men to the subject of ground movement and subsidence from mining, as evidenced by the large number of articles that have appeared in technical journals, also papers and discussions in mining societies in the leading mining countries of the world. These have not been confined to consideration of the narrower limits of the subject but in application have extended to many of the fundamental questions involved in mining. The papers and discussions have been concerned with .ground movements resulting from mining of a great variety of minerals, metallic and lion-metallic. Examples of the former are: the mining of gold ore at Johannesburg, South Africa, and in the Kolar field, India; mining copper ores in Arizona and Utah; and lead and zinc in the Joplin region. Examples of ground movement resulting from mining non-metallic minerals are found in: the mining of. coal in many countries; potash mining in Germany; the mining of- common salt in several parts of the' United States; and the mining of sulfur in Texas and Louisiana; and examples of subsidence in the non-metallics are found exceptionally in the extraction of petroleum by wells, as in the Goose Creek field, on the Gulf Coast,' and recently in the Sour Lake field' of Texas

THE trying times experienced by the steel industry during the past four years have emphasized the necessity of producing pig iron at the lowest possible cost. The trend in both design and operation of blast furnaces has been toward this end rather than securing maximum production from a unit or group of units. In the following discussion the trend in design of stacks and auxiliary equipment will be taken up before operation is considered. Although few furnaces have been constructed in the past few years, the trend is definitely toward larger furnaces with a hearth diameter of 24 or 25 ft. Such a furnace is very flexible, being able to produce efficiently any desired daily tonnage between 500 and 1000 or more. The detail of the design of furnace stacks, with the exception of the top, has changed little in recent years.

Carbon reduction of rutile and ilmenite in nitrogen and ammonia atmospheres was studied as a method of preparing titanium nitride . Ammonia was a better nitriding agent than nitrogen . The contact between the solid reactants , carbon and rutile , was a prime factor in nitrogen atmospheres and was of lesser import in dissociated ammonia . The reduction process for conversion of rutile to the nitride required carbon . The nitriding of ilmenite- carbon mixtures produced titanium nitride and elemental iron .

CdSxTe1-x and CdS1-yTey solid solutions are usually formed in the interfacial region in the CdS/CdT thin film solar cells during the deposition of the CdTe layer and/or the processing steps of the device. It is well known that CdCl2 heat treatment encourages the formation of the CdSxTe1-x alloy which improves the solar cell performance. In this work, indium doped CdS1- yTey thin films are produced by first producing CdS:In thin films by the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique on glass substrates, then annealing the films in nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of elemental tellurium. The films are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and transmittance measurements. The transmittance is used to deduce the optical parameters such as; the extinction coefficient, refractive index, besides to the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant. The dispersion parameters such as Eo (single-oscillator energy) and Ed (dispersive energy) of the deposited films are also estimated and discussed.

Ni-M (Metal=Cu, Fe, Co, Mn, Zn, Cr) aerogel catalysts were tested for CH4 oxy-CO2 reforming. It was found that the Ni-Co bimetallic aerogel catalyst had the highest activity and stability in methane oxy-CO2 reforming among all the Ni-M aerogel catalysts. It exhibited a steady activity of 79 % (in terms of CH4 conversion) at 750 oC, which is the highest activity under a similar reaction condition as compared with those published in literature. Characterizations for the reduced catalysts indicated the formation of Ni-Co alloy, while other transition metals separated from Ni during the reduction process. Therefore, the active species in the Ni-Co bimetallic catalyst showed a stronger interaction than those in other Ni-M catalysts, which might be one of the main reasons for the better catalytic performance of the catalyst.

A major process control system is in some ways like a complex organism. The extremities, (that is, field instruments) are exposed to many hazards and suffer malfunctions of relatively minor and repetitive nature. Here I equate a stuck valve or dead transmitter with a skin abrasion or cut. The maintenance and repair of the extremities can be done by technicians with basic but thorough knowledge of relatively few problems and their solutions. Here I equate with administering Band-Aids and aspirin. On the other extreme, when the master control device (such as a computer) fails, one does not attempt home remedies. A "brain" specialist is called in. It is, however, crucial that the patient be able to clearly describe his symptoms. Getting down to the case at hand, a complex system consisting of field instruments, instrument racks, interface equipment, and perhaps a computer, may require maintenance at all levels. At the field equipment end where physical damage, corrosive atmospheres, reconfiguration, and routine calibration checks are common, the customer has the opportunity to develop a competent staff of maintenance people. The relatively high maintenance activity assures competence through repetition.

Thirty years ago, the U.S. gold mining industry was hanging on by its fingernails. Save for one great mine, the Homestake, most production was coming from copper smelters such as Kennecott and Magma. Even Homestake itself was under great pressure from rising costs and a fixed price for gold. The outlook was dim, to say the least. Today, as it has for most of the past decade, the American gold mining industry stands among the world leaders in production, and in the development of mining and mineral processing technology. What caused this dramatic change? Obviously, the freeing of the gold price was a major factor, as was the decline in South African production, but these events alone could not have created the U.S. strength we see today. It was technology, investment, and the determination of miners to build an entirely new industry that were the indispensable ingredients. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, with great foresight, had begun the research that led to heap leaching before the gold price began to rise, and Newmont had committed to build a small mill at Carlin, a move then considered quite risky. From that point, the U.S. gold mining industry was placed on lower-grade ores then being found in Nevada and elsewhere, but it was soon apparent that we would have to develop new technologies to deal with more refractory ores, carbonaceous as well as sulfide-bearing. This is now being done with considerable success. Despite its success, or perhaps because of it, the gold mining industry has come under pressure from various groups who characterize their activities as motivated by "public interest." The public interest they refer to properly include the health and safety workers and impacted communities, as well as protection of the environment, and with these concerns we miners have relatively little argument. In fact, we consider health, safety and the environment among our highest priorities, and not just because regulations may require us to do so. The argument, however, is not about the regulation of a viable mining industry, it is about a well-organized movement to attack and condemn mining in the media and to misrepresent its importance to the Nation and its willingness to accept responsible regulation. Once largely local or regional, the interest groups to which I refer are now quite large, national in scope, and even becoming international. This trend, taken together with finances raised from their dues and contributions, would make the interest groups formidable adversaries for mining, but their grip on the media enormously magnifies their influence. Unfortunately, it also makes possible the wide dissemination of incomplete, incorrect or slanted information. I am not here to "bash" the interest groups. On the whole, I believe that many of them have made positive contributions to society. As conservationists, however, I question their authority to make, or foster, decisions about which American industries and communities live and which die. To illustrate, I would like to present for your consideration the problem of cyanide, one of the issues over which the gold mining industry is most threatened. CYANIDE-POISON OR MIRACLE SOLVENT? Let me get this out of the way right up front: cyanide in most of its chemical forms is toxic. In some forms it is also listed as a carcinogen. These are adverse characteristics cyanide shares with a considerable number of industrial chemicals, including some that are widely used without the stringent regulations already in place for the mining uses of cyanide. In these uses, by the way, the risk to humans comes from direct ingestion of cyanide or cyanide-bearing solutions, or from the accidental acidification of solutions leading to release of hydrocyanic acid gas. That these risks are under control in mining can be seen from the fact that, in modern U.S. practice, there has never been a documented fatality attributed to cyanide! Because of its toxicity, cyanide cannot enter and be accumulated in the food chain. It can, however, be a threat to birds and animals that ingest cyanide-bearing solutions. Protection against this is, quite properly, a responsibility of individual mining operations, and considerable sums are spent each year to prevent or reduce bird and animal exposures. It should be evident, though, that many human activities, including highway traffic, windmills, use of pesticides and the like, result in bird and animal losses. Mining's use of cyanide, and the measures taken to protect birds and animals, should be considered in context. Cyanide must be kept out of surface streams and groundwater, and existing regulations mandate this. Any cyanide residues left in leach heaps, waste dumps and disused facilities must be eliminated, and we have proven technologies to do this now, just as we have means to detoxify tailings prior to disposal. The gold mining industry decries those rare instances when irresponsible operators fail to deal with contamination, and agrees that they should be held responsible. We do not agree, however, that the great majority of responsible companies should be punished, in advance, for accidents that have never happened. So much for the poison, what about the "miracle solvent?" Is that an overstatement? Well, consider the fact that gold has been called "noble" from earliest times, because it does not oxidize under atmospheric exposure, and that it appeared to the ancients to be utterly insoluble. Later generations of scientists did discover that it could be dissolved, but only by a combination of acids so potent that it became known as aqua Regia. Later still, it was found that chlorine would also dissolve gold, and attempts were made to base commercial processes on this, without a great deal of success. It remained

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? Telvis Limited, manufacturer of an emergency communication dispatcher's broadcasting system, now introduces the possibility of a remote software upgrade to its devices. The paper presents methods, features and ways to accomplish this task. It describes the mechanisms used and the opportunities that arise from the use of this type of functionality. The mechanism software update presented applies to devices on the surface and in underground areas of mines. The electronics used currently allow the use of remote software updates, but the mining equipment makes little use of these methods. This paper aims to start the discussion on this topic and tries to lay the path of development by showing one of the first examples of the application.

In block caving, the rates and sequencing of undercut production blasting, drawbell blasting, and mucking are the key levers for attempting to manage cave performance. Cave performance encompasses a range of factors, which include growth, shape and the effect of the cave on the abutments, excavations, geological structures and lithology. We compare production data in several panels in the Grasberg DMLZ and GBC block caves with the seismic response in work areas, around geological structures, and in geotechnical domains. These comparisons enable evidence-based conceptualising of the effect of production rates and mining layouts. By also considering the correlation of seismic release rates in different parts of the rock mass, the wider influence of a cave can be gauged through considering possible stress and / or deformation transfer. This concept is not novel, but it is rarely implemented in a routine fashion, principally because production data rarely are easily available. Previously, it has also been used to retrospectively compare seismic hazard between different mines. This paper discusses practical, day-to-day tools to manage seismic response to mining. Therefore, the paper presents a methodology for presenting seismic release and production rates on integrated plots at any time to facilitate quick identification of correlated spatial regions. This methodology explores the production data collection and geolocation at Grasberg, which will be described in some detail.

The Betts process for electrorefining of lead has been in operation since 1902 in the Trail Operations Metallurgical complex. The Betts process allows production of high purity lead in a single electrochemical step. Process improvements and plant expansions have taken place over the many decades of operation of this process which has proven to be robust, flexible, and capable of successfully treating a large range of anode bullion compositions. This paper reviews the history of the Betts lead electrorefining process, the innovations and quick industrial adoption of new discoveries that took place at the end of the nineteenth century. The process was first implemented in Trail Operations and integrated very well with metallurgical needs then and now.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The Electric Discharge Impulse Crushing System (EDICS) is a technology for carrying out crushing by using electrical power and nitromethane. It is designed for construction tasks such as splitting of concrete and rocks.The EDICS consists of an electric discharge generator that supplies a high-voltage high-current pulse, a cartridge that generates power by using electric discharge energy, and cables that connect the electric discharge generator and the cartridge. The cartridge contains a thin metal wire that evaporates because of the electric discharge energy and a nitromethane that reacts with this evaporated metal wire. The cartridge can be used to generate a high pressure on the order of gigapascals within a time interval of several hundred microseconds, and crushing power equivalent to that generated by explosives is generated during this period. In recent years, the EDICS has been widely used in Japan because of its good performance and favorable characteristics.

Close monitoring of performance at each process stage, from raw material through to finished product, is vital for operational consistency and the production of high quality steel. However, many of the integrated iron and steelmaking process route stages operate under such severe conditions of temperature, dust, water, thermal radiation, vibration, pressure, vacuum, extreme dynamic events, high material flows, corrosion, erosion, electrical-noise, electromagnetic-noise, or audio-noise that, in general, it is a very difficult challenge to obtain useful information for control. Thus, state-of-the-art non-contact and remote sensors are applied to help monitor and control specific process operations. Often, these sensor systems have been developed especially for the steel industry and they are based on four principal technologies: Laser, Microwave, Electro-Magnetics and Thermal Imaging with supporting technologies such as: X-ray Fluorescence, Audiometry, Digital Image Processing, Radio Telemetry, GPS and many others. These advanced sensor technologies are reviewed with respect to their application at various stages along the integrated process route.

The Rönnsktär smelter has recently undergone a series of technical and operational changes. This changes are caused by our own will to remain and gain in competivety and to adapt to the ever changing surroundings. To be able to remain competitive in surrounding with high wage costs, high inflation and high environmental standards thorough cost management is needed. The Swedish economic policy in the beginning of the 80'ies consisted amongst other things of two devaluations. The exchange rate of the Swedish Krona was reduced with approximatively 25 %. This boosted the profits of our export industry, some even believed we entered the land of milk and honey ... And working in this promised land where everything turns into profit it is very difficult to be careful and restrictive with your spendings. Apart from some healthy and fruitful investments we allowed ourselves yearly steady increases in salary for ever reduced number of worked hours and we of course employed more people. Inflation rates went up and so did property prices. In 1986 finally reality catched up on us. Reality in the form of too high costs started to hit Swedish export industry 5-6 years after the big devaluations. Furthermore the high inflation rate also hit the domestic industry a couple of years later. Together with other important factors Sweden faced a severe home-made recession in the beginning of the 90'ies. With this background we now report and analyse our smelter's performance and operating results, shown in fig 1 The main constrictions on smelting and refining at Rönnsktär are today: * Income restrictions by governmental production level Limit * Throughput resmctions by governmental emission limit * High capital costs in the aftermath of Swedish high inflation in the recent decade * Low work force turnover Below we will illustrate how we tackled with these issues along the following lines: * People * Quality * Technology
