Industrialization is raising the standard of living of people everywhere. The common man is demanding and getting more of everything. Perhaps more markedly than most other things, he is consuming more water. A hundred years ago water for domestic use, in all but a few large centers, was lugged from wells in buckets. This still is true in many rural areas, even in the enlightened United States of America. but pumps and pressure systems are rapidly replacing the "old oaken bucket," even on farms and in isolated country homes. Nevertheless, many still fail to see water as a ?commodity? in the same sense that coal, lumber, fertilizer, and bread are considered as commosities. Water is too frequently taken for granted.

In 1944 some ten or so pieces of legislation impacted on the mining industry. Today in excess of 80 in one way or another apply to the Northern Territory miner. This paper will look at the nature of the legislation that has been introduced and the reasons for its introduction. During the Second World War the mining of resources such as iron, tin etc for the war effort set the platform for the subsequent expansion of the industry in the post-war years. Thereafter, the change in attitudes over the years that have resulted from a more conscious public and more responsible governments and developers associated with the recognition of the legal rights of others and the threat of litigation, will be traced. With a major review of the Northern Territory Mining Act currently in progress, this paper will view ANZMEC's foreshadowed preference for a National Code and the NT's intent of drawing some commonalities with other states of Australia to achieve this aim. Finally, the questions of over-regulation and whether existing legislation is complete will be addressed. From this it is foreshadowed how legislation may develop during the lead into the 21st century.

In the current study, Al2O3-MgO-CaO refractories were prepared at 1400-1600 by the addition of MnO micro-powders, and the effect of MnO addition on densification behavior of the refractory was discussed. The results showed that the doped MnO dissolved to MgAl2O4 phase, and promoted the growth of MgAl2O4 grains by the formation of MgAl2O4 solid solution. As a result, the dense microstructure was obtained, with the apparent porosity decreased from 19.2% to 5.4% and the bulk density increased from 2.78g/cm3 to 3.15g/cm3 after firing at 1600 for 2h by the addition of 4% MnO. In addition, a texture microstructure was observed, which is considered to be favorable to improve mechanical properties and the service life of Al2O3-MgO-CaO system refractories.

The recycling of waste tires has been a big environmental problem. About 280 million waste tires are produced annually in the United States and more than 2 billion tires are stockpiled, which cause fire hazards and health issues. Tire rubbers are insoluble elastic high polymer materials. They are not biodegradable and may take hundreds of years to decompose in the natural environment. Microwave irradiation can be a thermal processing method for the decomposition of tire rubbers. In this study, the microwave absorption properties of waste tire at various temperatures are characterized to determine the conditions favorable for the microwave heating of waste tires.

When we look out on our business landscape today, the words higher, faster, fdwther come to mind. Compliance issues, business integration, increasing production and profitability demands are converging in an age old industry and giving it a new twist. Not that the rock changes, rather that as the variables of our business change, the resulting “cut-off grade in business” turns ore into rock or rock into ore. The trick is to emphasize the latter. As with the miners of yore, what was recovered from the business enterprise had a lot to do with tools and skill. So it is today. When the casual observer looks at drilling and blasting operations today, many see the same basic offering in terms of equipment types and process. Looks, however, can be deceiving. As with the aviation sector, a given machine might took similar to previous generations of equipment, but in fact is radically different in terms of power, efficiency, accuracy, and range. So it is with hydraulic top-hammer drills today.

This appears still more remarkable when one considers the foundation on which it is built. The criticism naturally suggested is as follows: First; the special theory of relativity is based on an assumption which is counter to the fundamental conception of relative motion. Second; the theory claims only a slight modification of Newtonian mechanics-a modification so minute that, even if true, it would have no practical value in its application to any visible occurrence here on earth.

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

1N THIS PAPER, the writer proposes to limit his comments to few generalized phases of the subject, based on his personal experience in the midwestern United 'States and in one section .of the Coal Branch in Western Alberta. The following statistics are submitted to show the importance that strip mining has assumed in the coal mining industry of the United States. In 1914, 1,281,000 tons of strip coal were produced, amounting to 0.3 per cent of the total production. In 1948, the total was 13~,505,000 tons, representing 23.3 per cent. In 1949, the percentage figure dropped slightly and this can be partially accounted for by the labour disturbances prevalent throughout the year. In 1914, there were 48 power shovels and draglines being used in the stripping of coal; in 1949 there were 3,712, not to mention other types of coal stripping equipment such as bulldozers, tractors and scrapers, rotary excavators, and stackers. At the bituminous coal mines in Western Canada, strip mining was introduced only a few years ago, two of the major reasons for its development being the need for increased production during the war and post-war years and the need to hold the line on increasing production costs, but even in these few years the percentage of strip production has in-creased to such an extent that some mines that, five or six years ago, were producing all their tonnage from underground operations are today obtaining up to 80 per cent of their total output from strip mines.

Ferromanganese continues to be an indispensable requirement in steel manufacture. Approximately 470,000 of the 80 per cent ferro-alloy was consumed in 1929 and increasing amounts will be required annually by the steel industry unless some satisfactory substitute is found. An average of 14 pounds of metallic manganese is used for each ton of steel produced, The principal use of manganese is for de-oxidation of the metal in the steel refining processes, although a considerable amount is also used for the production of special manganese steels. Unfortunately, domestic production of manganese ore is inadequate to meet normal peace-time requirements, not to mention increased abnormal war-time demands. The rather large quantities of low-grade manganiferous iron ores which occur in the Coruna Range in Minnesota have for a number of years greatly appealed to those interested in the development of a domestic source of the supply. The North Central Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has made an elaborate study of the possibilities of the pyrometallurgical treatment of ores from these deposits and much of the valuable information secured by them has already been published.

FOR the past seven years, all flotation at the Britannia mill has been done in Forrester Air-Lift cells. Prior to 1931, the roughing and part of the cleaning operation had been performed in four 21-cell and two 14-cell M.S. machines. The resulting economies in reagent, power, maintenance, and general operating costs, and the increased recovery, more than justified the exclusive use of the Forrester machine. About three years ago, the possibility of still further improving the efficiency of the flotation section was the subject of considerable discussion and experiment. Arising from these experiments, tests were made of the practicability of using a cell of greater depth than that of any pneumatic or mechanically-agitated machine in common use. Cells were constructed with depths of 7 .5 feet, 10 feet, and 15 feet, and, in all cases, a very definite improvement in operation was indicated. The cell now being used in the mill treats from 5,500 to 6,200 tons of dry feed per day. It is 100 ft. long by 5 ft. wide by 8 ft. deep, and has replaced a total length of over 500 feet of standard Forrester machine. The choice of a depth of 8 feet was governed by the type of blower which was available-in this case, a Roots-Connersville blower, driven by a synchronous motor and delivering 6,000 c.f.m. of free air at 4.0 pounds per square inch. At the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company, where a new mill was recently built, all flotation is carried on in cells 10 feet deep, with good results.

In spite of the efforts done in the past to implement in Codelco best practice guidelines and standards on several important sampling, assaying and variability issues, many people, particularly top managers and operators, are still not aware of the relevance of the use of the principles and practice of geostatistics, sampling theory, analytical chemistry and the understanding of processes variability from rock to cathodes. As a result, an important challenge for the sampling community is to find out the causes of this lack of awareness and to develop communication skills to influence the organisation, particularly the top management level. This situation is not affecting only Codelco; it is a common characteristic of the copper mining industry. The main cause is cultural. Judeo-Christian and occidental sciences are deterministic. This implies a disregard of process variation and the assumption that homogeneity is omnipresent. Another important aspect of the cultural challenge is education. Education is the most efficient way to transfer a system of ideas, traditions and practices. To implement proper courses of sampling theory and geostatistics and support to multidisciplinary education at universities, mining companies will improve teamwork between geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists and chemists. The improvements will imply a more sustainable and efficient mining business.

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. My presentation is from the viewpoint of the industrial mineral geologist, which is a relatively rare breed. Very few geologists become involved with industrial minerals for two reasons, I think: (1) Much of the industry utilizing non-metallic minerals has developed without the use of geologists in the begin¬ning and many of the management people, who generally derive from the processing plant supervision, tend to take raw materials for granted; and (2) non-metallic minerals are a very insignificant part of the curriculum of virtually all colleges granting a geology degree. One learns about the geology of industrial minerals by working with it. This "on-the-job-training" is probably best because it brings the geologist into close quarters with the production people and the production process. And the industrial minerals field has a distinctiveness when compared with the petroleum or metal mining field in that each deposit can yield a material differing in some aspect from that in any other or within the same deposit. The petroleum from a well in a given field will be similar to that from any other well, but a limestone on one side of a hill can differ signifi¬cantly in elemental composition, calcinability, soundness, specific gravity, or some other factor from the same ledge on the other side of the hill. This characteristic of almost certain variability creates problems sooner or later and provides for much of the employment of industrial mineral geologists. My job seen from the viewpoint of management is "Find us some rock we can extract and process at a profit." The industrial non-metallic geologist has much the same problems and approach as a detective. I do not mean the TV variety with the big mouths and the unfailing knack of spotting the wanted criminal immediately in a city of ten million people. Any real detective will tell you it takes leg-work, knowhow, and persistence to make a case. The same is true for the geologist who finds rock which can be quarried at a profit. 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name F203 is a good collector of cassiterite, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name ZJ-3. F203 and ZJ-3 are similar series of isomers. They have similar naphthye, and similar series of functional OH and ?CONHOH, but the seat of OH and ?CONHOH group are different, on the F203 is 2.3; on the ZJ-3 is 1.2, ortho position too. According to Isomeric principle ZJ-3 is a good collector of cassiterite slime too. Using ZJ-3 as collector flotation -10µm occupies 90%, grade 1.16% Sn cassiterite slime of Da Chang Chehe concentration plant, pass one coursing flotation, two cleaning and one scarenging flotation, and obtains grand 18.26% Sn, recovery 92.68% cassiterite concentrate. The result proves the Isomeric principle of flotation reagents is correct again. This principle may supply to synthetize new flotation reagents reference. This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

Zinc metal was first produced in India around 1100 A.O. and a zinc industry based on retorting gradually developed in both India and China(1) . The vertical retort method for smelting zinc ores was developed in England in the 1730s; this was followed by the more fuel efficient horizontal retort process developed by the Belgians in the 19th century(2) . The horizontal retort process was the standard method of zinc manufacture until the 1950s when it became obvious that it could not compete with electrolytic zinc technology(2). The present day extractive metallurgy of zinc is dominated by the electrolytic process which now accounts for almost 80% of the world's primary zinc production. In recent years the electrolytic zinc process has seen significant improvements: the fluid-bed roasting of zinc concentrates, improved leaching and residue treatment techniques such as the jarosite and goethite processes, improved solution purification procedures, mechanization of the zinc electrolysis step and of the zinc melting and casting operation. In addition, new leaching processes have been implemented for the treatment of oxidized ores, particularly silicates, and the pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates is now a commercial reality. Although the electrolytic zinc process was first used on a commercial scale in 1916, its history can be traced back to the 1860s. The purpose of the present paper is to outline the early history of the electrolytic zinc process and to trace the significant developments which led to the first successful commercial electrolytic zinc plants.

"THERE HAS BEEN a marked growth in the petroleum industry in Canada since the end of the war. The rate of growth in the demand for oil products has exceeded that in United States, although the per capita consumption is still less. Estimates of the consumption of petroleum and petroleum products in Canada in 1951 are approximately 154,000,000 barrels, which is slightly more than 11 •barrels per capita, whereas the estimated consumption in United States for the same period, according to World Petroleum, is placed at 2,619,- 970,000 barrels. This, on the basis of a population of 154,000,000, would be equivalent to 17 barrels per capita. The increase in consumption of the petroleum and products is world wide. World production in 1951 has been estimated (Oil and Gas Journal) at 11,700,000 barrels a day or more than 41;4, billion barrels for the year. United States production increased 13.7 per cent to 6,143,000 •barrels a day and Canada'.s ,, total production increased about 65 per cent from a total of 29,091,235 •barrels in 1950 to an estimated (Dominion Bureau of Statistics) 48,096,800 barrels in 1951.The trend to use increased amounts of petroleum and petroleum products, particularly in the United States and Canada, has also been supplemented by increased use of natural gas. The rate of expansion of the consumption of natural gas in United States in the past few years has been very rapid, increasing from 2,600 billion cubic feet in 1940 to 5,975 billion in 1950, with the proven reserves in the same period increasing from 85,000 billion to 186,000 billion cubic feet."

This article presents results of studies performed to determine the feasibility of using low-grade limonite ores from Yunnan deposit. Laboratory tests and commercial trials have shown that the magnetic separation can be performed with a high high-grade concentrates. The quality of the preparation concentration meets the requirements for blast-furnace smelting. The results as a whole demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing bank limonite ore. Yunnan limonite?s magnetic separation, roasting magnetic separation and flotation experimental study shows that grade of the ore grade can been from 32.91% heighten to 58.64%, a recovery of iron is 90.87%, productive rate is 51% through orthogonal test optimization; roasting magnetic separation can obtain that the grade of iron preparation concentrate is 61.16%, recovery is 67.39%, productive rate is 36%.
